Precision measurement of the B0 meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0 decays with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the B0$$B^{0}$$ meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0$$ B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*0} $$ decays in data from 13 TeV$$\text {TeV}$$ proton–proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 140fb-1$$ 140~\mathrm {fb^{-1}} $$ recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The measured effective lifetime is τ=1.5053±0.0012(stat.)±0.0035(syst.)ps.$$ \tau = 1.5053\pm 0.0012~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0035~\mathrm {(syst.)~ps}. $$The average decay width extracted from the effective lifetime, using parameters from external sources, is Γd=0.6639±0.0005(stat.)±0.0016(syst.)±0.0038(ext.)ps-1,$$\begin{aligned} \Gamma _d = 0.6639\pm 0.0005~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0016~\mathrm {(syst.)}\\ \pm 0.0038~\text {(ext.)} \text {~ps}^{-1}, \end{aligned}$$where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from external sources. The earlier ATLAS measurement of Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ in the Bs0→J/ψϕ$$B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow J/\psi \phi $$ decay was used to derive a value for the ratio of the average decay widths Γd$$\Gamma _d$$ and Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ for B0$$B^{0} $$ and Bs0$$B^{0}_{s} $$ mesons respectively, of ΓdΓs=0.9905±0.0022(stat.)±0.0036(syst.)±0.0057(ext.).$$ \frac{\Gamma _d }{\Gamma _s } = 0.9905\pm 0.0022~\text {(stat.)} \pm 0.0036~\text {(syst.)} \pm 0.0057~\text {(ext.)}. $$The measured lifetime, average decay width and decay width ratio are in agreement with theoretical predictions and with measurements by other experiments. This measurement provides the most precise result of the effective lifetime of the B0$$B^{0}$$ meson to date.

Light Meson Spectroscopy with GlueX and Beyond

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab was specifically designed for precision studies of the light-meson spectrum. For this purpose, a photon beam with energies up to 12 GeV is directed onto a liquid hydrogen target contained within a hermetic detector with near-complete neutral and charged particle coverage. Linear polarization of the photon beam with a maximum around 9 GeV provides additional information about the production process. In 2018, the experiment completed its first phase, recording data with a total integrated luminosity above 400 pb?1. We highlight a selection of results from this world-leading data set with emphasis on the search for light hybrid mesons. In the mean time, the detector underwent significant upgrades and is currently recording data with an even higher luminosity. The future plans of the GlueX experiment to explore the meson spectrum with unprecedented precision are summarized.

Connection between variations of the atmosphere temperature profile and variations of the meson component intensity

The influence of temperature effects on intensity variations of the cosmic ray meson component were studied. The connection between the temperature variation delta T and the intensity variation delta I was established by using the temperature coefficient density technique. To realize how many devices are needed on the Earth for predicting the temperature variation of the atmosphere profile with a reasonable accuracy, IO isobaric levels and IO were calculated. The set of initial elements of the cosmic ray mesons are varied and it is shown that the matrix of the coefficients B sub ij is rather sensitive to their choice. It is found that if for the calculations of the atmospheric temperature variations the model is used, the number of meson components, essentially exceeding 3, should be considered.

Measuring Muon Antineutrino Charged-Current Interactions without Mesons in the Final State, in the NOvA Near Detector

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment based at Fermilab in the US, with the primary aim of measuring neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. This will enhance our understanding of electroweak interactions by measuring the neutrino mixing angles, CP-violating phase and neutrino mass ordering. To measure these oscillations, we first need to have a deep understanding of how neutrinos and antineutrinos interact with matter. Antineutrino interaction cross sections are, at present, particularly poorly constrained, and processes such as meson exchange currents are not well understood in the antineutrino sector. This analysis will develop a cross-section measurement of muon antineutrino interactions without mesons (e.g. pions or kaons) in the final state, in the NOvA near detector. A high-statistics, high-purity sample is obtained through a cut-based selection process implementing machine learning techniques. The sample is dominated by quasi-elastic and meson exchange current interactions which are sensitive to nuclear effects such as Final-State Interactions. The cross section will be extracted as a function of the incoming neutrino energy and the kinematics of the outgoing particles. This presentation will give an overview of the analysis and discuss progress towards obtaining the cross-section measurement.

Tomography of the rho meson in the QCD instanton vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We analyze the rho meson unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in the instanton liquid model (ILM). The corresponding TMDs in ILM are approximated by a constituent quark beam function in the leading Fock state multiplied by a rapidity-dependent factor resulting from the staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed longitudinal momentum, transverse separation, and rapidity. At the resolution of the ILM, all of the rho meson TMDs are symmetric in parton 𝑥 for fixed transverse momentum, and Gaussian-like in the transverse momentum for fixed parton 𝑥. The latter is a direct consequence of the profiling of the quark zero modes in the ILM. The evolved TMDs at higher rapidity using the Collins-Soper kernel, and higher resolution using the renormalization group, show substantial skewness towards low parton 𝑥.

Beyond leading twist: 𝜌 meson decay constants and distribution amplitudes in a self-consistent light-front quark model

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of decay constants and chiral-even and chiral-odd distribution amplitudes (DAs) up to twist 4 for the 𝜌 meson in the standard light-front quark model (LFQM) based on the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) construction. For the 𝜌 meson, which possesses both longitudinal (ℎ=0) and transverse (ℎ =±1) polarizations, two types of decay constants, 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$, arises accordingly. We demonstrate that these decay constants can be self-consistently extracted from both local (𝑧𝜇 =0) and nonlocal (𝑧𝜇 ≠0) matrix elements ⟨0⁢|$\overline{𝑞}$(𝑧)⁢Γ⁢𝑞⁡(−𝑧)|⁢𝜌⁡(𝑃,ℎ)⟩, with Γ=(𝛾 𝜇 ,𝜎 𝜇⁢𝜈 ,𝛾 𝜇 ⁢𝛾 5 ,𝟏), in a manner independent of current components, polarizations, and reference frames. In particular, we emphasize the role of nonlocal matrix elements involving axial-vector and scalar currents, where mixing between 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$ occurs. We show that this mixing is consistently resolved through the BT construction, ensuring the proper extraction of these decay constants.

First Exclusive Reconstruction of the 𝐵* + , 𝐵* 0 , and 𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$ Mesons and Precise Measurement of Their Masses

Using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at √𝑠 = 13 TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 , the first full reconstruction of the three vector 𝐵 meson states, 𝐵* + , 𝐵* 0 , and 𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$, is performed. The mass differences between the excited mesons and their corresponding ground states are measured to be 𝑚⁡(𝐵* + )−𝑚⁡(𝐵 + ) = 45.277 ± 0.039 ± 0.027 MeV, 𝑚⁡(𝐵 *0 )−𝑚⁡(𝐵 0 ) = 45.471 ± 0.056 ± 0.028 MeV, and 𝑚⁡(𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$)−𝑚⁡(𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$) = 49.407 ± 0.132 ± 0.041 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve on the precision of previous measurements by an order of magnitude.

Measurement of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The p T -differential cross section of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, covering an unprecedented transverse-momentum range of 1.6 < p T < 50 GeV/c. The meson is reconstructed via the ω → π + π − π 0 decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporating ω fragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. The ω/π 0 ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples the p T ranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio of C ω/π0 = 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the systematic and statistical uncertainties.

Search for long-lived heavy neutrinos in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived heavy neutrinos (N) in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 fb$^{−1}$ collected in 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using a dedicated data stream that enhances the number of recorded events containing B mesons. The search probes heavy neutrinos with masses in the range 1 < m$_{N}$ < 3 GeV and decay lengths in the range 10$^{−2}$ < cτ$_{N}$ < 10$^{4}$ mm, where τ$_{N}$ is the N proper mean lifetime. Signal events are defined by the signature B → ℓ$_{B}$NX; N → ℓ$^{±}$π$^{∓}$, where the leptons ℓ$_{B}$ and ℓ can be either a muon or an electron, provided that at least one of them is a muon. The hadronic recoil system, X, is treated inclusively and is not reconstructed. No significant excess of events over the standard model background is observed in any of the ℓ$^{±}$π$^{∓}$ invariant mass distributions. Limits at 95% confidence level on the sum of the squares of the mixing amplitudes between heavy and light neutrinos, |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$, and on cτ$_{N}$ are obtained in different mixing scenarios for both Majorana and Dirac-like N particles. The most stringent upper limit |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ < 2.0 × 10$^{−5}$ is obtained at m$_{N}$ = 1.95 GeV for the Majorana case where N mixes exclusively with muon neutrinos. The limits on |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ for masses 1 < m$_{N}$ < 1.7 GeV are the most stringent from a collider experiment to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Differential cross-section measurements of D± and Ds± meson production in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The production of D± and Ds±$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ charmed mesons is measured using the D±/Ds±$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$→ ϕ(μμ)π± decay channel with 137 fb−1 of s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during the years 2016–2018. The charmed mesons are reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum 12 < pT < 100 GeV and pseudorapidity |η| < 2.5. The differential cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, respectively, and compared with next-to-leading- order QCD predictions. The predictions are found to be consistent with the measurements in the visible kinematic region within the large theoretical uncertainties.

Measurement of the polarizations of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ψ ( 2S ) mesons produced in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV

The polarizations of prompt and non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, using data samples collected by the CMS experiment in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 103.3 fb − 1 . Based on the analysis of the dimuon decay angular distributions in the helicity frame, the polar anisotropy, λ ϑ , is measured as a function of the transverse momentum, p T , of the charmonium states, in the 25–120 and 20–100 GeV ranges for the Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) , respectively. The non-prompt polarizations agree with predictions based on the hypothesis that, for p T ≳ 25 GeV , the non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) are predominantly produced in two-body B meson decays. The prompt results clearly exclude strong transverse polarizations, even for p T exceeding 30 times the Image 2 mass, where λ ϑ tends to an asymptotic value around 0.3. Taken together with previous measurements, by CMS and LHCb at s = 7 TeV, the prompt polarizations show a significant variation with p T , at low p T .

Search for the Higgs boson decays to a ρ 0 , ϕ, or K ⁎0 meson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Three rare decay processes of the Higgs boson to a ρ(770) 0 , Φ(1020), or K ⁎ (892) 0 meson and a photon are searched for using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Events are selected assuming the mesons decay into a pair of charged pions, a pair of charged kaons, or a charged kaon and pion, respectively. Depending on the Higgs boson production mode, different triggering and reconstruction techniques are adopted. The analyzed data sets correspond to integrated luminosities up to 138 fb -1 , depending on the reconstructed final state. After combining various data sets and categories, no significant excess above the background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into ρ(770) 0 $γ$, Φ(1020)$γ$, and K ⁎ (892) 0 are determined to be 3.7 x 10 -4 , 3.0 x 10 -4 , and 3.0 x 10 -4 , respectively. In case of the ρ(770) 0 $γ$ and Φ(1020)$γ$ channels, these are the most stringent experimental limits to date.

Scaling Properties of φ -Meson and Light Charged Hadron Production in Small and Large Systems at PHENIX

Recent results on the identified charged-hadron (π ± , K ± , p, p¯) production vat midrapidity region (|η| < 0.35) have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in p + Al, 3 He + Au, Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. These measurements are presented through the invariant transverse-momentum (p T ) and transverse-mass (m T ) spectra for different collision centralities. The averaged freeze-out temperature value for different systems was found to be 166.1 ± 2.2 MeV, and do not exhibit any dependence on the collision centrality and $\langle$N parti $\rangle$ values. The particle ratios of K/π and p/π have been measured in different centrality ranges of large and small collision systems. The values of K/π ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in p+p collisions. Furthermore, the identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (R AB ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton R AB values over meson R AB values was observed in central 3 He+Au, Cu+Au, and U+U collisions. The proton R AB values measured in p+Al collision system were found to be consistent with R AB values of Φ, π ± , K ± , and π 0 mesons, suggesting that the size of the system produced in p+Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Two- and three-meson scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses from lattice QCD

We study systems of two and three mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using four CLS ensembles with 𝑎 ≈ 0.063 fm, including one with approximately physical quark masses. Using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, we determine the energy spectrum of these systems including many levels in different momentum frames and irreducible representations. Using the relativistic two- and three-body finite-volume formalism, we constrain the two- and three-meson K matrices, including not only the leading 𝑠 wave, but also 𝑝 and 𝑑 waves. By solving the three-body integral equations, we determine, for the first time, the physical-point scattering amplitudes for 3⁢𝜋 + , 3⁢𝐾 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 + ⁢𝜋 + systems. These are determined for total angular momentum 𝐽 𝑃 = 0 − , 1 + , and 2 − . We also obtain accurate results for 2⁢𝜋 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 2⁢𝐾 + phase shifts. We compare our results to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits.

String-based model with Hagedorn temperature of 𝑇 𝐻 ∼ 300 MeV describes the spectrum of mesons and glueballs

We consider the thermodynamics of a color-confined phase of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and pure gauge theory within a string-inspired corresponding to a physical spatial dimension, 𝑑 = 3. We show that the physical mass spectrum of massive mesons—in both the strange and nonstrange sectors separately—is reasonably well described and extended by the exponential mass spectrum of open strings, 𝜌⁡(𝑚), characterized by a unique Hagedorn temperature 𝑇 𝐻 = $\sqrt3⁢𝜎/2⁢𝜋$, expressed by the string tension 𝜎. This 𝑇 𝐻 is the value appropriate for 𝑑 = 3 spatial dimensions and is of the order of 𝑇 𝐻 ∼ 300 MeV for typical values of the string tension. It is much larger than the values of 𝑇 𝐻 which have been phenomenologically extracted so far to describe the meson spectrum. Glueball states in pure gauge theory, modeled by closed strings, exhibit a similarly large Hagedorn temperature, highlighting a universal feature of the exponential spectrum. We further analyze the thermodynamic properties of the equation of state at finite temperature and demonstrate that, in the confined phase, the string models agree with lattice QCD results. This lends further support to the recent interpretation of the QCD phase diagram that incorporates strings as relevant degrees of freedom.

𝐽/𝜓-meson–nucleon scattering length from threshold photoproduction on light nuclei

The quality of recent Short-Range Correlations/Color-Transparency (SRC/CT) Collaboration 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction data off a 4 He target from Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory, combined with the feasibility of measuring the reaction close to the free-nucleon energy threshold, opens the door to using incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction to explore a variety of interesting physics aspects. An example is the estimation of the 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 scattering length |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | on the bound proton, obtained using the vector meson dominance model. The new experiment E12–25–002, conducted by the SRC/CT Collaboration, was recently approved in Hall D with the GlueX spectrometer, which will significantly enhance the number of reconstructed 𝐽/𝜓 mesons. Using a plane-wave theoretical model to generate quasidata, we estimated that the experiment could achieve a result of |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.45 mfm. This value can be compared to an extraction based on the free proton data from the GlueX Collaboration, |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.55 mfm. A comparison between the two would provide an opportunity to evaluate the effects of medium modification in light nuclei.

Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The production of prompt D s + and D + mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions in both the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV . The nuclear modification factors of both D s + and D + mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity. In addition, the D s + to D + cross section ratio is measured as a function of the primary charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced D s + to D + production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured p T range, in particular at low p T and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN
