A Measurement of the Eta Meson Radiative Decay Width via the Primakoff Effect

The ? meson is an interesting tool to study fundamental symmetries in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In particular, its radiative decay width, ? p? Ñ ??q, is an important quantity that can be predicted in the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory. A precision measurement of this quantity would provide critical inputs to understanding the mixing of the ? and ?1 mesons and extracting constants with wide-ranging applications in low-energy QCD. This decay width has been measured in the past using two different experimental techniques. The more popular technique utilized e`e´ collisions to produce ? mesons through electromagnetic interactions. Today, the Particle Data Group (PDG) averages the results of five such experiments to obtain their currently-accepted value of the decay width as: 0.515?0.018 keV. However the first measurement of this quantity was obtained from a fixed-target experiment that measured the cross section for photoproduction of ? mesons on a nuclear target via the Primakoff effect. Their result of 0.324?0.046 keV shows strong tension with the average of the collider measurements, motivating a new, high precision measurement using the Primakoff method. For this purpose, the PrimEx-eta experiment was conducted in Hall D of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab or JLab). The data is currently being analyzed to measure the differential cross section for the photoproduction of ? mesons on a liquid, 4He target. Preliminary results obtained from the analysis of the first phase of the PrimEx-eta experiment show reasonable agreement with the currently-accepted PDG value of the radiative decay width. However, as will be discussed, there are many challenges to this precision measurement which must be studied before any results can be finalized and compared with previous measurements. In parallel to the ? decay width measurement, the PrimEx-eta experiment measured the total cross section for the fundamental, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) process of Compton scattering from the atomic electrons inside the target. The results obtained from this measurement are in strong agreement with the next-to-leading order QED calculations, and the total combined uncertainties are below 3% for incident photon energies between 7-10 GeV. In addition to providing the first precision measurement of the total Compton scattering cross section within this beam energy range, this measurement verifies the capability of the PrimEx-eta experimental setup to perform absolute cross section measurements at forward angles, and serves as a reference process for the calibration of systematic uncertainties.

Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson (𝜔+𝜌 and 𝜙) production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. The low-mass vector-meson yield and nuclear-modification factor were measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons, ⟨𝑁 part ⟩, and the transverse momentum 𝑝 𝑇 . These results were compared with those obtained via the kaon decay channel in a similar 𝑝 𝑇 range at midrapidity. The nuclear-modification factors in both rapidity regions are consistent within the uncertainties. A comparison of the 𝜔 + 𝜌 and 𝐽/𝜓 mesons reveals that the light and heavy flavors are consistently suppressed across both 𝑝 𝑇 and ⟨𝑁 part ⟩. Finally, in contrast, the 𝜙 meson displays a nuclear-modification factor consistent with unity, suggesting strangeness enhancement in the medium formed.

Valence structures of light and strange mesons from the basis light-front quantization framework

In this work, we apply the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework to solve for the structures of mesons with light and strange valence quarks. Our approach treats mesons as relativistic bound states with quarks confined in both the transverse direction and the light-front longitudinal direction. The spin-orbit interactions of these confined quarks are further specified by the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model. We address the U(1)A axial anomaly by including the Kobayashi-Maskawa-’t Hooft interaction regularized by our basis. We present the structures of the pion, the kaon, the eta meson, and the eta-prime meson in terms of their valence light-front wave functions obtained from the eigenvalue problem of our light-front Hamiltonian.

Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0 mesons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D 0 meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$= 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D 0 mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D 0 → K – π + and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D 0 -meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < p T,chjet < 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η jet | < 0.9 – R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. The distribution of the jet momentum fraction carried by a D 0 meson along the jet axis $\left({z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}\right)$ was measured in the range 0.4 < ${z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}$ < 1.0 in four ranges of the jet transverse momentum. Comparisons of results for different collision energies and jet resolution parameters are also presented. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. A generally good description of the main features of the data is obtained in spite of a few discrepancies at low p T,chjet . Measurements were also done for R = 0.3 at $\sqrt{s}$= 5.02 and are shown along with their comparisons to theoretical predictions in an appendix to this paper.

Measurement of beauty-quark production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV via non-prompt D mesons

The p T -diferential production cross sections of non-prompt D 0 , D + , and D$^+_s$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y| < 0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, $f_s$/($f_u$ +$f_d$), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in diferent collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-meson p T -diferential production cross section at higher $\sqrt{s}$. Finally, the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D 0 , D + , D$^+_s$, and $Λ^+_c$ hadron measurements, obtaining dσ/dy = 75.2 ± 3.2 (stat.) ± 5.2 (syst.)$^{+12.3}_{-3.2}$ (extrap.) µb.

First measurement of D* + vector meson spin alignment in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV

The first measurement of prompt D *+ -meson spin alignment in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to the direction orthogonal to the reaction plane is presented. The spin alignment is quantified by measuring the element ρ 00 of the diagonal spin-density matrix for prompt D *+ mesons with 4 < p T < 30 GeV/c in two rapidity intervals, |y| < 0.3 and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8, in central (0–10%) and midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV. Evidence of spin alignment ρ 00 > 1/3 has been found for p T > 15 GeV/c and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8 with a significance of 3.1σ. The measured spin alignment of prompt D *+ mesons is compared with the one of inclusive J/ψ mesons measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4).

Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) mesons in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

The second-order Fourier coefficients ( v 2 ) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) mesons produced in PbPb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV are studied. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb - 1 . The scalar product method is used to extract the v 2 coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range | y | < 2.4 , in the transverse momentum interval 0 < p T < 50 GeV / c , and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. In contrast to the J / ψ mesons, the measured v 2 values for the Image 5 mesons are found to be consistent with zero.

Impact of globally spin-aligned vector mesons on the search for the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the chiral magnetic effect (CME) is predicted to arise from the interplay between the chirality imbalance of quarks in the nuclear medium and the intense magnetic field, and will cause a charge separation along the magnetic field direction. While the search for the CME is still ongoing in experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the CME-sensitive observables need to be scrutinized to exclude the non-CME contributions. In this work, we examine the influence of globally spin-aligned ρ mesons on the γ 112 correlator, the R Ψ 2 (ΔS) correlator, and the signed balance functions, via a toy model and a multiphase transport model (AMPT). The global spin alignment of vector mesons could originate from non-CME mechanisms in heavy-ion collisions, and is characterized by the 00-component of the spin density matrix, ρ 00 . Here, we find that the CME observables show similar dependence on ρ 00 , and could receive a positive (negative) contribution from ρ-decay pions, if the ρ 00 of ρ mesons is larger (smaller) than 1/3. Since pions are the most abundant particles in such collisions, the ρ 00 measurements for ρ mesons become crucial to the interpretation of the CME data.

Study of azimuthal anisotropy of $\Upsilon$ (1S) mesons in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The azimuthal anisotropy of Image 1 mesons in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions is studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV. The Image 1 mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The anisotropy is characterized by the second Fourier harmonic coefficients, found using a two-particle correlation technique, in which the Image 1 mesons are correlated with charged hadrons. A large pseudorapidity gap is used to suppress short-range correlations. Nonflow contamination from the dijet background is removed using a low-multiplicity subtraction method, and the results are presented as a function of Image 1 transverse momentum. The azimuthal anisotropies are smaller than those found for charmonia in proton-lead collisions at the same collision energy, but are consistent with values found for Image 1 mesons in lead-lead interactions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV.

Multiplicity dependence of charm baryon and charm meson production in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.16$ TeV

Measurements of the production yields of charm baryons (Λ$^+_c$ ) and charm mesons (D 0 ) in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV are presented. The data were collected in 2016 with the CMS experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186 nb -1 . The Λ$^+_c$ baryon is reconstructed from the decay channel Λ$^+_c$ → K$^0_S$p , while the D 0 meson is reconstructed via D 0 → K - π + . The Λ$^+_c$ baryon and D 0 meson yields are extracted in several charged-particle multiplicity classes. No strong multiplicity dependence of the Λ$^+_c$-to-D 0 yield ratio is observed, unlike the observed strange baryon to strange meson yield ratio of $Λ/\bar{Λ}$to K$^0_S$, which shows a strong multiplicity dependence. This observation indicates different mechanisms for the multiplicity evolution of hadronization processes for charm and strange quarks and provides new constraints to the understanding of heavy flavor production and collectivity in small collision systems.

Hydrodynamic description of D meson production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions *

The large values and constituent-quark-number scaling of the elliptic flow of low-p T D mesons imply that charm quarks, initially produced through hard processes, might be partially thermalized through strong interactions with quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. To quantify the degree of thermalization of low-p T charm quarks, we compare the D 0 meson spectra and elliptic flow from a hydrodynamic model to experimental data as well as transport model simulations. We use an effective charm chemical potential at the freeze-out temperature to account for the initial charm quark production from hard processes and assume that they are thermalized in the local comoving frame of the medium before freeze-out. D 0 mesons are sampled statistically from the freeze-out hyper-surface of the expanding QGP as described by the event-by-event (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model CLVisc. Both the hydrodynamic and transport models can describe the elliptic flow of D 0 mesons at P T < 3 GeV/c as measured in Au+Au collisions at $sqrts_{NN} = 200$ GeV. Though the experimental data on spectra are consistent with the hydrodynamic result at small p T ~ 1 GeV/c, they deviate from the hydrodynamic model at high transverse momentum, GeV/c. The diffusion and parton energy loss mechanisms in the transport model can describe the measured spectra reasonably well within the theoretical uncertainty. Finally, our comparative study indicates that charm quarks only approach local thermal equilibrium at small p T , even though they acquire sizable elliptic flow comparable to light-quark hadrons at both small and intermediate p T .

New physics particles mixing with mesons: Production in the fragmentation chain

A class of extensions to the Standard Model adds hypothetical long-lived particles (LLPs) that have mass- or kinetic-mixing with neutral mesons, such as pions or rho mesons. The mixing can contribute significantly to the production of LLPs at proton accelerator experiments, and no consistent description of these production modes exists in the literature. In this paper, we develop a framework for studying different LLPs—dark photons, vector mediators coupled to the baryon current, and axionlike particles with different coupling patterns. In particular, we implement the production mechanisms in PYTHIA 8, study how the overall flux and kinematic distributions depend on the LLP’s mass, and compare various subprocesses where the mixing contributes—proton bremsstrahlung, meson decay, and production in the fragmentation chain. We find that our new description of LLP production predicts an integrated flux that differs from current approaches by one to two orders of magnitude, and highlight the unavoidable theoretical uncertainties coming from poor knowledge of the properties of heavy mesons.

Impact of tracking resolution on 𝜙-meson spin alignment measurements

Measurements of global spin alignment of vector mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can provide unique insights into spin-orbit interactions and vector meson dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma produced in those collisions. The global spin alignment is measured by the 00th coefficient of the spin density matrix, 𝜌 00 , via the polar angle (𝜃*) of the decay-kaon momentum in the parent rest frame with respect to the direction of the orbital angular momentum of the collision. Such measurements are affected by the angular and momentum resolutions of the reconstructed tracks in the experiment. Such effects are nontrivial because of kinematic complications caused by the boost to the parent rest frame, and could be important given that the global spin alignment signal is weak. In this paper, we investigate the effects of experimental tracking resolutions on measurements of the 𝜙 (1020) meson 𝜌 00 . We study these effects for two methods of 𝜌 00 measurements, the conventional method analyzing the 𝜙⁢−meson yield versus cos 2 ⁡𝜃* and the invariant mass (𝑚 inv ) method utilizing ⟨cos 2 ⁡𝜃*⟩ versus 𝑚 inv . Using typical resolution values from experiments, we find that the effect of track resolution on 𝜌 00 is small, well within typical measurement uncertainties.

𝜌-meson nucleon scattering length from CLAS threshold photoproduction measurements

Here, extending our study of the vector meson-nucleon scattering lengths, we are focusing on the 𝜌-meson case using recent CLAS threshold data for the reaction 𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝 within the meson–baryon reaction model. The total 𝜎 𝑡 ⁡(𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝) and 𝜎 𝑡⁡ (𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜔⁢𝑝) cross sections are close to the momentum of the vector meson in CM 𝑞 =0.2 GeV/c. Then the 𝜌⁢𝑝 photoproduction cross section grows rapidly. Our result for 𝜌⁢𝑁 scattering length is a factor of 4 smaller than the size of the hadron and the phenomenological determination of the 𝜔 nucleon scattering length using threshold photoproduction cross sections. The observed difference between 𝜌⁢𝑁 and 𝜔⁢𝑁 scattering lengths is of interest for further understanding within hadron structure theory.

𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet axes difference in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of 𝐷 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch jet}_{T}$ ≥ 10 GeV/𝑐 and 𝐷 0 mesons with 𝑝$^{D^0}_{T}$ ≥ 5 GeV/𝑐. In this 𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of 𝐷 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ⁢𝑅 axis−D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ⁢𝑅 axis , between the three jet axes. The 𝐷 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the 𝐷 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

Sensitivity study with a $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons modular simulation code of heavy flavor $R_{AA}$ and azimuthal anisotropies based on beam energy, initial conditions, hadronization, and suppression mechanisms

Heavy flavor probes provide important information about the in-medium properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we investigate the effects of 2D + 1 event-by-event fluctuating hydrodynamic backgrounds on the nuclear suppression factor and momentum anisotropies of heavy flavor mesons and nonphotonic electrons. Using the state-of-the-art $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons modular simulation code (called “DAB-MOD”), we perform a systematic comparison of different transport equations in the same background, including a few energy-loss models—with and without energy-loss fluctuations—and a relativistic Langevin model with different drag parametrizations. We present the resulting $\textit{D}$ and $\textit{B}$ mesons $R_{A A}, v_2, v_3,$ and $v_4$ as well as multiparticle cumulants, in AuAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV , and compare them to the available experimental data. The $v_2${4}/$v_2${2} ratio, which is known to be a powerful probe of the initial conditions and flow fluctuations in the soft sector, is also studied in the context of heavy flavor. We also investigate the correlations between the transverse anisotropies of heavy mesons and all charged particles to better understand how heavy quarks couple to the hydrodynamically expanding quark-gluon plasma. Finally, we study the influence that different initial conditions and the implementation of heavy-light quark coalescence has on our results.

Production of η and η ′ mesons in p p and p Pb collisions

The production of η and η ′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV . The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5 < y c . m . < 3.5 (forward rapidity) and − 4.0 < y c . m . < − 3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η and η ′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5 < p T < 10 GeV and 3 < p T < 10 GeV , respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η and η ′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η mesons are also used to calculate η / π 0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as η and η ′ meson fragmentation. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Algebraic model to study the internal structure of pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content

The internal structure of all lowest-lying pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content is studied in detail using an algebraic model that has been applied recently, and successfully, to the same physical observables of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with hidden-flavor quark content, from light to heavy quark sectors. The algebraic model consists on constructing simple and evidence-based of the meson’s Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (BSA) and quark’s propagator in such a way that the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (BSWF) can then be readily computed algebraically. Its subsequent projection onto the light front yields the light front wave function (LFWF) whose form allows us a simple access to the valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) by integrating over the transverse momentum squared. We exploit our current knowledge of the PDAs of lowest-lying pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons to compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs) through the overlap representation of LFWFs. From these three dimensional knowledge, different limits/projections lead us to deduce the related parton distribution functions (PDFs), electromagnetic form factors (EFFs), and impact parameter space GPDs (IPS-GPDs). When possible, we make explicit comparisons with available experimental results and earlier theoretical predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
