Submodule-Level Decentralized Control for Cascaded Quadruple Active Bridge-Based Medium-Voltage Converters

High-power, low-voltage DC (LVDC) loads, such as AI data centers, electric vehicle fast-charging hubs, and hydrogen electrolyzers, are accelerating the deployment of solid-state transformers (SSTs) that directly interface medium-voltage AC (MVAC) to LVDC, streamlining power delivery. This paper proposes a submodule-level decentralized control strategy for an SST comprising a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) active rectifier on the MVAC side and per-module quadruple-active-bridge (QAB) converters on the LVDC side with local controllers. The proposed strategy eliminates the need for high-fidelity, real-time cross-isolation communication by synchronizing all active bridges to a common heartbeat signal and enabling the primary- and secondary-side controllers to generate independent local control signals (phase shifts). The resultant phase shifts naturally govern average and double-line frequency power transfer between active bridges, enabling each side to meet its control objectives using only local measurements. Detailed controller design considerations are presented based on a stability analysis. Comprehensive electromagnetic-transient simulations demonstrate tight DC-link voltage regulation, high-quality grid currents, and robust operation under load transients and grid disturbances, without real-time communication among the submodule controllers. These results indicate that the proposed scheme can significantly enhance the reliability, scalability, and flexibility of cascaded bridge-based medium-voltage converters.

Grid Value Investigation of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converters: Preprint

This paper presents the work which investigates the value that the medium voltage back to back (MVB2B) converter can bring to the grid, through two potential applications: voltage regulation powered by the reactive power adjustment function, and the distributed energy resource (DER) adoption enhancement powered by the quantitative power transfer function. Two groups of distribution systems have been prepared for the value investigation, including IEEE 123-bus system for voltage regulation study and two utility provided realistic distribution systems for DER adoption enhancement study. The analysis results have demonstrated that the MVB2B converter can bring significant value to the grid through the two aforementioned applications. Particularly, with MVB2B converter transferring power between two feeders, a substantial amount of backfeeding solar power can be avoided, and the size of the energy storage which is used to store the extra solar power can be significantly reduced.

Study on Conversion from an Existing Alternating Current Medium-Voltage Line to a Direct Current Line: A Case of Load or Source Expansion

Simultaneous increase of power generation through renewable systems and load due owing to the rapid growth in electrified road transportation systems, leads to new challenges in the design, operation, and protection of distribution-level electrical power systems. This paper addresses challenges related to the integration of new sources or loads to a distribution grid through long alternating current lines. The International Council on Large Electric Systems medium-voltage benchmark model developed for North America was used for simulation studies. Use cases were developed to illuminate the issues related to long alternating current lines and the usefulness of medium-voltage direct current lines in a distribution network.

Grid Value Investigation of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converters

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the value that medium voltage back-to-back (MVB2B) converters can be realized through two potential applications: voltage regulation via the provision of reactive power supply or absorption, and distributed energy resource (DER) hosting capacity improvement via the controlled transfer of real power within the distribution system. Two groups of distribution systems have been prepared for the value investigation: the IEEE 123-bus system for the voltage regulation study and two utility-provided, realistic distribution systems for the DER hosting capacity improvement study. The results demonstrate that the MVB2B converter can realize significant value for the grid through these two applications. In particular, with the MVB2B converter transferring power between two feeders, DER-based power can be routed to nearby loads instead of feed through the distribution substation. Additionally, the size of energy storage elements used to enable higher levels of DERs can be significantly reduced.

Improved Double Pulse Test for Accurate Dynamic Characterization of Medium Voltage SiC Devices

This article presents an improved double pulse test (DPT) for accurate dynamic characterization of the medium voltage (MV) silicon carbide device. The difference between low voltage (LV) and MV DPT setup grounding is first introduced, which results in different measurement considerations. Then, parasitic capacitances in the DPT and their impact on the DPT are discussed considering different grounding points and device connections. Approaches are proposed to minimize the impact of parasitic capacitances on DPT results. In addition, the impact of switching V-I timing alignment on the testing results is discussed, compared to that in the LV DPT; a V-I alignment approach is introduced for the MV DPT. A 10 kV/20 A SiC mosfet -based DPT is taken as an example of the improved DPT, and test results show that it can minimize the impact from parasitic and improve the accuracy of the device switching loss estimation.

Feed-Forward Compensation for Model Predictive Control in Tri-port Current-Source Medium-Voltage String Inverters for PV-Plus-Storage Farms

The novel tri-port current-source medium-voltage string inverter (TCS-MVSI) is a promising candidate for large-scale PV-plus-storage (PVS) farms owing to its galvanic isolation, easy storage integration, soft-switching capability across entire load range, controlled low dv/dt and EMI, benign fault tolerance, etc. Due to its low inertia feature, traditional PI-based control cannot manage large transients effectively. Instead, a model-based predictive control (MPC) is proposed to achieve robust and stable operation. As is well known, the control performance of MPC is compromised by the sampling and computational delay during implementation significantly, if not well addressed. This paper analyzed and quantified these delays and then proposes feed-forward compensation (FFC) for the MPC method to compensate the delays and the large parameter variations due to the low-inertia nature. In addition, this method also compensates for the high dc-link ripple within each switching cycle, a unique issue for low-inertia converters. Here, the proposed method requires low computational effort, allowing it to be extended for multiple ports. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated in experiments. In 10 kW test, the proposed method decreases the average dc-link current by 17%, leading to ~20% conduction losses and ~0.5% increase in converter efficiency. In addition, the peak dc-link current also decreases by 15%, resulting in reduced transformer size. As a result, an increased power density can be achieved with the proposed method. Similar improvements have been observed across the power range from 2 kW to 10 kW.

SCR-based Medium Voltage DC Solid-State Circuit Breaker

This paper describes a medium voltage solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) based on SCR technology, featuring short fault-interruption time and a minimal turn-off auxiliary circuit. The SSCB design incorporates a specialized SCR and a commutation circuit designed with an objective to reduce the required SCR hold-off/turn-off time, tq, which primarily determines the fault interruption duration. To validate the design, simulation analysis is presented, and a 1.5 kV 300 A SSCB prototype has been built and tested. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed design philosophy demonstrating the SSCB's ability to interrupt a 200 A load current in less than 50 μs. The proposed SCR-based SSCB has been developed for DC applications but is equally applicable to AC applications.

Use of Traveling Wave Signatures in Medium-Voltage Distribution Systems for Fault Detection and Location

Protection systems are a critical feature for the proper operation of a power grid. Protection systems should be able to quickly detect, identify, locate, and isolate the faults within a time frame that prevents damage to grid components and reduces customer outages. As more inverter-based photovoltaics (PV) are integrated into the grid, phasor domain based protection schemes become more inaccurate due to low levels of fault current from inverters or respond too slowly to accurately identify fault conditions. This points to the need to identify and develop novel protection approaches for distribution systems with high penetration of inverter based PV. The main objective of the project is to develop new time domain-based protection schemes to enable more accurate and faster detection, identification and location of faults in distribution systems and/or microgrids with high penetration of inverter-based PV. Our approach aims to exploit the traveling waves that are generated during a fault or other disturbances in the grid.

Reliability Analysis of Large-Area, Low Pressure-Assisted Silver Sintering for Medium-Voltage Power Modules

Multi-layer insulating ceramic substrates can enable medium-voltage (MV) power modules with reduced peak electric field. This benefit is particularly important for MV silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs due to their higher operating voltages. Large-area, low-pressure assisted silver sintering is a potential solution for bonding substrates to create a multi-layer structure. The voiding content and defect density of the bond used to create the multi-layer substrate stack-up is critical to the reliability of the power module and the thermal performance, as this bond is in the primary path for heat dissipation in the power module structure. Here, samples of two-layer direct bonded aluminum (DBA) stacks have been fabricated and subjected to thermal cycling to analyze their reliability. Passive thermal cycling from -40 degrees C to 200 degrees C was performed. Cross-sections were cut at pre-determined intervals and imaged with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). After 1000 thermal cycles, adhesive failures are observed between the sintered silver and the DBA surface. Cross-sections were cut and imaged via optical microscope and SEM. Thermal analyzer measurements are recorded on a 10-kV SiC power module utilizing the sintered DBA substrate stacks.

Use of Grid-Forming Medium-Voltage Power Electronics Hub in a Microgrid Setting: Preprint

This paper presents the application of a new design of a multiport, modular, medium-voltage power electronics hub (M3PE-HUB) in a microgrid setting. The M3PE-HUB system was modeled in a digital real-time simulator (DRTS) and integrated into the Banshee microgrid test system. Verification and validation of the M3PE-HUB architecture and controls in the test microgrid setting are the primary contributions of this work. The results of the operation during the islanding and resynchronization process indicate the feasibility of the proposed architecture in a microgrid setting. This paper also presents results for a system reconfiguration use case where the M3PE- HUB was used to reconfigure the system under a fault condition.

A Medium Voltage Three-Stage Power Converter Topology for Distribution Grid Scale Energy Storage Systems

This work proposes a three-stage converter topology with a medium frequency isolation transformer for direct integration of energy storage systems into medium voltage distribution grids. The distributed architecture of the topology, using standard AC/DC converters, has been developed with the aim of plug-and-play capability and voltage and power scalability. The medium frequency transformer facilitates improved power density, while its 20:1 voltage translation capability enables the use of limited voltage level (500 Vdc) of the commercially available batteries. This paper presents the topology structure and details how it can be scaled to reach the full range of the distribution grid voltages and the required power levels. A transformer design for 500 Hz rated frequency is discussed. The control scheme of the converter equipped with voltage support, frequency support, and black start capabilities is also presented. Control hardware-in-the-loop results using OPAL-RT, with converter switching models connected to a weak IEEE-4 node test feeder modified for the aforementioned grid services, are provided to show the topology feasibility.

Grid Value Analysis of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converter on DER Hosting Enhancement

This paper presents an analysis of the value that can be realized by medium-voltage back-to-back (MVB2B) converters in terms of the increased utilization rate of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the improvement in operational conditions. A systematic, transferrable, and scalable methodology has been designed to analyze and quantify the increased DER value from three perspectives: 1) curtailment reduction of the DER generation, 2) size reduction of the energy storage needed to otherwise realize DER hosting levels, and 3) hosting capacity improvement of the DERs compared to the base distribution circuit capability. In the case study, the proposed methodology is applied to two utility distribution systems for analysis and quantification of the grid value of the MVB2B converter, installed in the distribution circuit, and provided to the solar photovoltaic (PV) DERs. Here, the analysis results demonstrate that the MVB2B converter can deliver significant value to the PV hosting enhancement of two adjacent distribution systems when they are connected by the MVB2B converter. Based on this case study, this paper analyzes and summarizes the approximate realized grid value of the MVB2B converter for distribution systems dominated by different shares of customer classes.

Medium-Voltage Isolated Auxiliary Power Supply Design for High Insulation Capability, Ultra-Low Coupling Capacitance, and Small Size

To fully utilize the benefits of medium-voltage (MV) silicon carbide (SiC)-based converter and achieve high power density, the isolated auxiliary power supply (IAPS) needs to be as small as possible. However, the high insulation and low coupling capacitance requirements, considering the high voltage and high dv / dt , are constraints of size reduction. This article proposes an MV IAPS design for high insulation capability, ultra-low coupling capacitance, and small size. The topology selection, efficiency, load regulation, coupling capacitance, and size reduction considerations are discussed. A 2.5 W MV IAPS is designed and built for a 10 kV SiC mosfet -based 13.8 kV/100 kW three-phase converter, achieving a partial discharge (PD) inception voltage of higher than 15 kV rms, ultra-low coupling capacitance of 1.03 pF, and smaller size than that of the commercial products as well as the state-of-art research prototypes. Experimental results of PD test, 10 kV SiC mosfet -based half-bridge test, and 13.8 kV/100 kVA three-phase converter full rating test are conducted for design validation.

A Compact, Single Stage, >1 kV Medium-Voltage Line Impedance Stabilization Network

This paper presents the design of a single-phase, single-stage line impedance stabilization network (LISN) for medium-voltage (MV) applications. More than 1 kV rated widebandgap (WBG) power semiconductor switches are increasingly utilized in new, emerging power electronics energy systems to improve power density and efficiency. However, due to inherently fast-switching speeds, WBG switch modules emit considerable electromagnetic interference (EMI) (e.g., common mode (CM) or differential mode (DM)). State-of-the-art offers standardized LISN solutions to validate and certify the new energy system for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). However, most are for low voltage applications (i.e., < 1 kV). MV LISNs (i.e., > 1 kV) are rare until recently and literature does not provide sufficient guidelines for designing and characterizing such devices. It has been a critical challenge for many scientists and engineers to reliably certify the emerging MV energy systems (e.g., electric ships and aircraft). This paper addresses such a technology gap. Specifically, a CISPR 16-1-2 compliant 50Ω/50μH LISN with 1.5kV, 75A and 30MHz measurement capability has been proposed. Detailed performance study versus non-linear parasitic parameters variations in MV inductors and capacitors have been done. Based on new understandings, novel techniques to intuitively mitigate unwanted parasitic have been proposed to develop the proposed LISN successfully. Thorough characterization of important LISN parameters are presented and factors influencing them are analyzed. A rigorous analysis, experimental tests, and in-depth comparisons over state-of-the-art have been made to validate the effectiveness. This is done through the state-of-the-art 300kVA MV EMI testbed.

Farm-level Interactions Study of a Novel Tri-port Soft-switching Medium-Voltage String Inverter (MVSI) based Large-scale PV-Plus-Storage Farms

A medium-voltage photovoltaic power conversion unit supported by battery based on a novel topology of soft switching solid state transformer is presented in this paper. It can reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of PVS farm in an extended degree. However, its capability to provide grid-support services, such as frequency response, reactive power support, etc, have not been demonstrated. A series/parallel combination of these modules form a large 20 MVA solar farm. To validate them with reduced computation burden, a small-signal model of MVSI is firstly derived and validated in this paper. The model has been validated to match the full-switch model in both steady-state and dynamic conditions. Next, a farm-level simulation based on the proved small-signal model was implemented to demonstrate grid-support services. Real irradiation date from NREL is used to show the operational capabilities of the system. As a result, the overall farm is simulated based on MATLAB/Simulink domain to check the performance for various cases namely: power transfer from dc-ac side, reactive power support during grid voltage sag and utilization of battery during grid voltage disturbance or partial shading over PV panels.
