Lieb-Robinson Light Cone for Power-Law Interactions

The Lieb-Robinson theorem states that information propagates with a finite velocity in quantum systems on a lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. What are the speed limits on information propagation in quantum systems with power-law interactions, which decay as 1 / r α at distance r ? Here, we present a definitive answer to this question for all exponents α > 2 d and all spatial dimensions d . Schematically, information takes time at least r min { 1 , α - 2 d } to propagate a distance r . As recent state transfer protocols saturate this bound, our work closes a decades-long hunt for optimal Lieb-Robinson bounds on quantum information dynamics with power-law interactions.

Denoising and Extension of Response Functions in the Time Domain

Response functions of quantum systems, such as electron Green’s functions, magnetic, or charge susceptibilities, describe the response of a system to an external perturbation. They are the central objects of interest in field theories and quantum computing and measured directly in experiment. Further, response functions are intrinsically causal. In equilibrium and steady-state systems, they correspond to a positive spectral function in the frequency domain. Since response functions define an inner product on a Hilbert space and thereby induce a positive definite function, the properties of this function can be used to reduce noise in measured data and, in equilibrium and steady state, to construct positive definite extensions for data known on finite time intervals, which are then guaranteed to correspond to positive spectra.

Biokinetic and Dosimetric Models [Slides]

Presentation describes internal dosimetry as an intersection of disciplines involving Physiology, Anatomy, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, which some people call "The art of Internal Dosimetry". The basic components for internal dose calculations are: Biokinetic (metabolic) models describing the intake, distribution, retention and excretion of radionuclides in the body, Dosimetric models describing the interaction of radiation within the several body organs and tissues, and System of dose limitation.

Further development of finite-temperature density functional theory (Technical Report on FG02-08ER46496)

The final year of funding was spent supporting research into extending conditional probability theory to generate the thermal dependence of PBE. The necessary background work led to a paper being published on the uniform electron gas (Dennis Perchak, Ryan J. McCarty, and Kieron Burke, Phys. Rev. B 105, 165143 (2022).). The graduate student John Kozlowski also contributed to a mathematical paper about DFT (Steven Crisostomo, Ryan Pederson, John Kozlowski, Bhupalee Kalita, Antonio C. Cancio, Kiril Datchev, Adam Wasserman, Suhwan Song, and Kieron Burke, Letters in Mathematical Physics 113, 42 (2023).).

The impact of entrained air on ocean waves

We make a physical–mathematical analysis of the implications that the presence of a large number of tiny bubbles may have, when present, on the thin upper layer of the sea. In our oceanographic example, the bubbles are due to intense rain. It was found that the bubbles increase momentum dissipation in the near surface and affect the surface tension force. For short waves, the implications of increased vorticity are momentum exchanges between wave and mean flow and modifications to the wave dispersion relation. For the direct effect we have analyzed, the implications are estimated to be non-significant when compared to other processes of the ocean. However, we hint at the possibility that our analysis may be useful in other areas of research or practical application.

Spherical means of solutions of partial differential equations in a conical region

The spherical means of the solutions of a linear partial differential equation Lu = f in a conical region are studied. The conical region is bounded by a surface generated by curvilinear ti surfaces. The spherical mean is the average of u over a constant ti surface. The conditions on the linear differential operator, L, and on the orthogonal coordinates (ti, eta, zeta) are established so that the spherical mean of the solution subjected to the appropriate boundary and initial conditions can be determined directly as a problem with only space variable. Conditions are then established so that the spherical mean of the solution in one concial region will be proportional to that of a known solution in another conical region. Applications to various problems of mathematical physics and their physical interpretations are presented.

The recognition of extraterrestrial intelligence

The departure from radiative equilibrium - represented by radio, television and radar technology - in the microwave spectrum of the earth is easily detectable over interstellar distances. Even with a technology no more advanced than our own, a civilization on a planet of a nearby star could easily determine, by auto-correlation techniques, the artificiality of these radio signals. Possible message contents for interstellar discourse of a modulated signal at any accessible frequency include (1) m-dimensional imagery represented by the transmission of numbers which are the products of m prime numbers; and (2) the use of a common mathematics, physics or astronomy to convey a range of information on more difficult subjects. The only direct attempts to date to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligence - the plaques aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft - are discussed briefly.

Spherical means of solutions of partial differential equations in a conical region

The spherical means of the solutions of a linear partial differential equation Lu = f in a conical region are studied. The conical region is bounded by a surface generated by curvilinear xi lines and by two truncating xi surfaces. The spherical mean is the average of u over a constant xi surface. Conditions on the linear differential operator, L, and on the orthogonal coordinates xi, eta, and zeta are established so that the problem for the determination of the spherical mean of the solution subjected to the appropriate boundary and initial conditions can be reduced to a problem with only one space variable. Conditions are then established so that the spherical mean of the solution in one conical region will be proportional to that of a known solution in another conical region. Applications to various problems of mathematical physics and their physical interpretations are presented.

A new approach to the solution of large, full matrix equations: A two-dimensional potential flow feasibility study

An approach to the solution of matrix problems resulting from integral equations of mathematical physics is presented. Based on the inherent smoothness in such equations, the problem is reformulated using a set of orthogonal basis vectors, leading to an equivalent coefficient problem which can be of lower order without significantly impairing the accuracy of the solution. This approach was evaluated using a two-dimensional Neumann problem describing the inviscid, incompressible flow over an airfoil. Two different kinds of mode functions were investigated, namely eigenfunction series and Fourier series. The method using Fourier series was found preferable. It uses all of the coefficients from a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm in an approximate method which exploits the known structure of the transformed coefficient matrix and very promising results for the flow over a realistic airfoil are obtained. On the basis of the results presented here, an order of magnitude reduction in this computer time can be expected for such problems as compared with the time for a direct matrix solution.

Finite element solution of torsion and other 2-D Poisson equations

The NASTRAN structural analysis computer program may be used, without modification, to solve two dimensional Poisson equations such as arise in the classical Saint Venant torsion problem. The nonhomogeneous term (the right-hand side) in the Poisson equation can be handled conveniently by specifying a gravitational load in a "structural" analysis. The use of an analogy between the equations of elasticity and those of classical mathematical physics is summarized in detail.

Some aspects of the identification of continuous vibrating systems

This paper deals with the identification of systems described by the one-dimensional, second order wave equation. Such equations arise commonly in various areas of mathematical physics, such as, acoustics, elastic wave propagation, and electromagnetic theory. Assuming that suitable measurements are made at only one point in the spatial domain, sufficient conditions for unique identification of the system eigenvalues and system coefficients are presented.

A general method for systematizing a bulk of data on the secondary-electron spectrum into a small number of indices is shown. The method is based on thorough examination of the mathematical physics that governs the spectrum. Several examples of the analysis of recent experimental data on proton impact are presented.
