Deployment Readiness Framework Subtask 1.1 (Literature Review)

Island and remote coastal communities face some of the most challenging environments for building, operating, and maintaining energy infrastructure, as well as the highest costs for electricity, fuels, and other essential energy sources. As sea-levels rise and storms become more intense and frequent, these communities and the energy infrastructure that supports coastal lives and livelihoods are also at increasing risk from natural hazards. To address these challenges, many coastal communities are envisioning energy solutions that will support the triple bottom line goals of the blue economy: economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Yet, island and remote coastal communities often face limited resources and capacity to tackle complex energy and coastal resilience issues. To support community-driven energy transitions in island and remote communities, and to better understand relationships between energy, community, and ecosystem resilience, the Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) has initiated the development of a Deployment Readiness Framework (DRF). The objective of the work is to co-produce and test practical tools and approaches that assess the readiness of coastal communities for marine energy demonstration, deployment, and operation. The DRF aims to build on and support the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Program (ETIPP) and other community-oriented energy transition programs. This project is jointly led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The development of the DRF includes three main phases: 1) a learning phase involving stakeholder engagement and literature review to synthesize metrics of community readiness to advance through an energy transition and to understand the state of the research and practice of participatory science-policy processes in various sectors, 2) a design phase to define readiness approaches and tools that will be developed as part of the DRF, and 3) an implementation phase to create the applications and interfaces for WPTO and the national laboratories to interact with the DRF. All three phases include close collaboration with communities and end-users of the framework, first to identify gaps in the science and tools needed to achieve community-driven energy transition goals and second, to test and improve the framework iteratively. Through technical assistance programs like ETIPP and utilizing the completed DRF to understand the influencing factors which motivate or deter energy transitions, WPTO hopes to engage a number of near-term marine energy demonstration opportunities. Here we report on the results from the literature review (Subtask 1.1) to inform the stakeholder engagement (Subtask 1.2) and design phase (Task 2) of the project.

Literature Review Investigating Adsorbents for Mercury Removal from Salt Batch Feed Material

The Savannah River Site (SRS) Liquid Waste System (LWS) contains mercury that originated from decades of canyon processing where it was used as a catalyst for dissolving aluminum cladding of reactor fuel. Since the start of radioactive operations, the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) has experienced processing difficulties due to the presence of mercury-laden solids. In response to these challenges, Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) has been requested by Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)/Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) personnel to perform a literature review to assess the feasibility of chemical strikes to salt waste-containing tanks at the SRS as an option to reduce mercury introduction into SWPF. The literature review should evaluate known technologies and chemistries for decreasing mercury concentration and the anticipated efficacy of each technology on various mercury species known to exist in SRS waste.

Critical Role of Water for Energy Transitions Technologies: A Literature Review

This report summarizes the water inputs associated with four technologies playing diverse roles in energy transitions: hydrogen, solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, and batteries. Information in this report is drawn from multiple sources, including peer-reviewed literature, industry and international agency reports, EcoInvent life cycle inventory database, and subject matter expert (SME) consultations. Where possible, insights that characterized water requirements for specific stages of the technology development (e.g., operations, manufacturing, and mining) were prioritized over broader cradle-to-gate assessment values. Furthermore, both direct and indirect water requirements (i.e., associated with associated energy inputs) were considered in this literature review.

Literature Review Investigating Historical Plutonium Solubility in SRS Tank Waste

The Savannah River Site (SRS) has designed the Accelerated Basin De-inventory (ABD) program to accelerate the de-inventory of L-Basin and accelerate the Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) disposition mission. Similarly, the H-Canyon facility at SRS is reestablishing the 6.3D electrolytic dissolver for dissolving unirradiated stainless-steel (SS) clad Fast Critical Assembly (FCA) fuel. In both discard types (ABD and FCA), plutonium is present and its complex solubility when composited to Concentration, Storage, and Transfer Facility (CSTF) sludge is being investigated as it may have downstream impacts to the liquid waste (LW) organization. This literature review aims to highlight and compile the existing literature on plutonium solubility in waste streams relevant to ABD and FCA discards, as well as discuss some considerations in analyzing solubility data of plutonium. This review serves to help define the analysis methods for future experiments involving plutonium (and other actinides) and in designing appropriate testing conditions surrounding these studies. This review is broken up into five parts and will discuss: (i) The possible effects of testing hold time and temperature on plutonium solubility, (ii) the influence of neutralization rate and particle size of freshly precipitated discards, (iii) the coprecipitation of plutonium with iron and uranium, (iv) predictive solubility modeling and the influence of supernate anions on solubility, and (v) the speciation of plutonium in solutionas a result of supernate anions.

Literature Review of Selected Publications Relevant to Carbon Dioxide Pipeline and Storage Systems

The annotated bibliographies provided in this document focus on identifying and reviewing environmental impact statements (EIS), environmental assessments (EA), and scientific literature relevant to aspects of CO 2 pipeline and storage construction and operation. The purpose of these summaries is to aid stakeholders responsible for the preparation of documents compliant with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements to have access to a quick and comprehensive guide of the literature that can inform their activities. They aim to inform the development of EISs and EAs by identifying potential environmental concerns and mitigation strategies. The annotated bibliographies captured in this document cover the general environmental assessment and impact topics relevant to CO 2 pipeline and storage construction and operation activities, with the subject of waste creation and handling being specifically pulled out into its own section. The reasoning behind a dedicated section for waste is that many EAs and EISs focus on the description of waste and its impacts, be it caused in routine operation or as a result of an accident.

Green Concrete with Glass Powder—A Literature Review

This paper represents a literature review of the effects of partially replacing cement with glass powder in concrete production, aiming to provide an enhanced elucidation of 78 published scientific articles between 2015 and 2023. Vigorous inclusion criteria were employed to accomplish this objective, such as focusing only on glass powder usage instead of cement, considering both conventional and unconventional concretes, and summarizing the physical, mechanical, durability, and morphological characteristics. It has been attempted not only to discuss the factors that contribute to similarities and differences but also to interpret associations and concerns as well as propose future research directions based on the identified gaps. The literature review reveals that using glass powder looks captivating and has higher mechanical and durability properties with environmentally friendly advantages simultaneously due to its filler and pozzolanic characteristics, especially in smaller sizes. The findings of this study are expected to promote sustainable and environmentally conscious practices beyond the current scope of research.

Resilience of Interdependent Water and Power Systems: A Literature Review and Conceptual Modeling Framework

As increasing pressures of population growth and climate change arise, water and power systems (WPS) are becoming increasingly interdependent. This interdependency has resulted in an increased potential for cascading failures, whereby the service interruption of one system can propagate to interdependent ones. This paper makes four contributions. First, we present an extensive literature review in the field of integrated water and power resilience, leveraging both institutional and technical literature research landscapes. We compare various modeling approaches used to model interdependent WPS and discuss the different metrics and definitions that are typically employed to quantify and define resilience. Relevant challenges and gaps related to modeling tools and metrics are also discussed, and appropriate recommendations are made. Second, the paper presents a visualization prototype for interdependent WPS to showcase water and power system interdependencies and reveal co-managed resilience strategies that can be used to improve resilience under different types of common threats. Third, we provide a conceptual decision support framework that simultaneously optimizes a portfolio of co-managed resilience strategies in the face of multiple, uncertain threats and addresses WPS interdependencies. Finally, we present future trends regarding digitalization, integrated planning, collaborative governance, and equity needs for building more resilient WPS.

Aerospace medicine and biology. an annotated bibliography, 1954 literature, volume iii

While this third volume of the bibliography was in preparation, a number of changes and new developments took place which, it is hoped, will be instrumental in furthering the bibliography's main objective: to provide as rapidly as possible comprehensive coverage of the aerospace-medical and bio-astronautical literature. To begin with, it will be noted that the title of the compilation has been changed from Aviation Medicine to Aerospace Medicine and Biology. This will bring into relief the fact that the general subject scope of the bibliography has been expanded to include new areas of interest in space-medical and space-biological research. Thus, to the subject fields heretofore covered by the bibliography (a full listing of which may be found in the Preface to Volume 2) new ones have been added, such as Biological Rhythms, Biological Orientation, Closed Ecological Systems, Physiological and Psychological Effects of Heat, Cold, Isolation, Restraint, and many others. Another important change was administrative in nature. Sponsorship of the bibliography for the fiscal year 1959/60 was taken over by the U. S. Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA), the U. S. Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Defense Research Board of Canada. Under a substantially increased budget, the Library of Congress was enabled to produce two volumes during the fiscal year. The Library also agreed to prepare selected abstracts from the current aerospace and bio-astronautic literature, which are published monthly in Aerospace Medicine, the official organ of the Aerospace Medical Association.*) If the present rate of production can be maintained, it will be possible to bring the bibliography up to date within about three years. In format, style, and arrangement, this volume follows closely the preceding ones. References are arranged alphabetically by author; abstracts are informative; and full bibliographic information is provided, including foreign and translated titles, volume and issue numbers, place of publication (if foreign), inclusive paging, full dates, and library call numbers or other location symbols. While the bulk of the publication is devoted to journal articles, reports, and monographs published during the year 1954, items published in 1952 or 1953 not included in the preceding volumes have been incorporated in this volume. For quick identification, the publication years of these off-year references have been printed next to the first author's name. As before, cumulated corporate and secondary author and subject indexes are included, the latter being revised and enlarged considerably, in keeping with the over-all expansion of subject scope.

Investigation of electroforming techniques, literature analysis report

A literature analysis is presented of reports, specifications, and documented experiences with the use of electroforming to produce copper and nickel structures for aerospace and other engineering applications. The literature period covered is from 1948 to 1974. Specific effort was made to correlate mechanical property data for the electrodeposited material with known electroforming solution compositions and operating conditions. From this survey, electrolytes are suggested for selection to electroform copper and nickel outer shells on regeneratively cooled thrust chamber liners, and other devices subject to thermal and pressure exposure, based on mechanical properties obtainable, performance under various thermal environments, and ease of process control for product reproducibility. Processes of potential value in obtaining sound bonds between electrodeposited copper and nickel and copper alloy substrates are also discussed.

On the feasibility of quantitative ultrasonic determination of fracture toughness: A literature review

The three main topics covered are: (1) fracture toughness and microstructure, (2) quantitative ultrasonic and microstructure; and (3) scattering and related mathematical methods. Literature in these areas is reviewed to give insight to the search of a theoretical foundation for quantitative ultrasonic measurement of fracture toughness. The literature review shows that fracture toughness is inherently related to the microstructure and in particular, it depends upon the spacing of inclusions or second particles and the aspect ratio of second phase particles. There are indications that ultrasonic velocity attenuation measurements can be used to determine fracture toughness. The leads to a review of the mathematical models available in solving boundary value problems related to microstructural factors that govern facture toughness and wave motion. A framework towards the theoretical study for the quantitative determination of fracture toughness is described and suggestions for future research are proposed.
