Three-Terminal Bipolar Junction Bottom Cell as Simple as PERC: Towards Lean Tandem Cell Processing

Silicon-based tandem cells are a potential upgrade for the dominating PERC technology and can greatly increase the conversion efficiency. A novel approach, the three-terminal (3T) tandem using interdigitated back-contact (IBC) cells, was shown to combine the advantages of four- and two-terminal tandem cells at the expense of a more complex bottom cell fabrication process. In this paper, we propose a simplified and lean PERC-like 3T bipolar junction bottom cell featuring two minority-carrier selective contacts and a single majority-carrier selective contact, and thus resembling a bipolar junction transistor architecture. We present the lean PERC-like fabrication process and explain the working principle by using current-voltage measurements of illuminated 3T IBC cells.

UV-Induced Degradation of High-Efficiency Solar Cells with Different Architectures

The ultraviolet-induced degradation (UVID) of solar panels is associated with the deterioration of cell performance and reduced reliability of packaging materials. Here we examine the UV stability of different architectures of high-efficiency solar cells without any encapsulation. Identical UV exposure tests were performed at two different labs using UVA-340 fluorescent lamps under different electrical bias configurations (open- or short-circuit) and irradiated cell surfaces (for bifacial technologies). Cell technologies, including heterojunction (HJ), interdigitated back-contact cells (IBC), passivated emitter rear contact (PERC), passivated emitter rear totally-diffused (PERT), are found to be more susceptible to UVID, leading to significant Isc loss (up to 4%) and P max loss (up to 15%) as compared to the conventional back surface field (Al-BSF) cells after exposure to UV irradiation of 8.92 MJ-m -2 -nm -1 at 340 nm. Additionally, the bifacial cells when irradiated from the backside exhibited greater photocurrent loss compared to the front side exposure, indicating potential sensitivity of rear surface passivation to UV radiation.

Thin, Lightweight Solar Cell

Improved design for thin, lightweight solar photovoltaic cells with front contacts reduces degradation of electrical output under exposure to energetic charged particles (protons and electrons). Increases ability of cells to maintain structural integrity under exposure to ultraviolet radiation by eliminating ultraviolet-degradable adhesives used to retain cover glasses. Interdigitated front contacts and front junctions formed on semiconductor substrate. Mating contacts formed on back surface of cover glass. Cover glass and substrate electrostatically bonded together.

Method of Fabricating a Piezoelectric Composite Apparatus

A method for fabricating a piezoelectric macro-fiber composite actuator comprises providing a piezoelectric material that has two sides and attaching one side upon an adhesive backing sheet. The method further comprises slicing the piezoelectric material to provide a plurality of piezoelectric fibers in juxtaposition. A conductive film is then adhesively bonded to the other side of the piezoelectric material, and the adhesive backing sheet is removed. The conductive film has first and second conductive patterns formed thereon which are electrically isolated from one another and in electrical contact with the piezoelectric material. The first and second conductive patterns of the conductive film each have a plurality of electrodes to form a pattern of interdigitated electrodes. A second film is then bonded to the other side of the piezoelectric material. The second film may have a pair of conductive patterns similar to the conductive patterns of the first film.

Hybrid semiconductor-piezoacoustic radiofrequency device

An amplifying radiofrequency device includes a piezoelectric film and a semiconductor amplifier layer. The piezoelectric film is conformed as an acoustic waveguide. The piezoelectric film has a principal acoustic propagation direction parallel to the principal conduction direction of the amplifier layer. Interdigitated transducers are positioned on the piezoelectric film to respectively launch an acoustic wave in response to an input RF signal, and transduce the acoustic wave back to an output RF signal. There is a distance of less than the acoustic wavelength between the semiconductor amplifier layer and the piezoelectric film. The piezoelectric film has a thickness of less than the acoustic wavelength. According to a method for making such a device, a stack of III-V layers is epitaxially grown on a III-V substrate, wherein the stack comprises a first etch stop layer, a second etch stop layer, an amplifier layer, and a contact layer. The stack is bonded to a lithium niobate film. The III-V substrate is removed by etching down to the first etch stop layer. Deposition windows are opened by etching from the first etch stop layer down to the contact layer. Metal contact electrodes are deposited in the deposition windows.
