Ground-state and decay properties of neutron-rich 106 Nb

The ground-state properties of neutron-rich 106 Nb and its β decay into 106 Mo have been studied using the CARIBU radioactive-ion-beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Niobium-106 ions were extracted from a 252 Cf fission source and mass separated before being delivered as low-energy beams to the Canadian Penning Trap, as well as the X-Array and SATURN β-decay-spectroscopy station. The measured 106 Nb ground-state mass excess of –66202.0(13) keV is consistent with a recent measurement but has three times better precision; this work also rules out the existence of a second long-lived, β-decaying state in 106 Nb above 5 keV in excitation energy. The decay half-life of 106 Nb was measured to be 1.097(21) s, which is 8% longer than the adopted value. Here, the level scheme of the decay progeny, 106 Mo, has been expanded up to ≈ 4 MeV. The distribution of decay strength and considerable population of excited states in 106 Mo of J ≥ 3 emphasizes the need to revise the adopted J π = 1 – ground-state spin-parity assignment of 106 Nb; it is more likely to be J ≥ 3.

Ground state properties of a spin-3/2 Fermi gas

Highlights: • A generalized spin-3/2 Fermi liquid is studied via diagram technique and Green’s function • The spin-mixing term strengthens ground state energy and effective mass Diagram technique is employed to study ground state properties of a generalized spin-3/2 Fermi gas which consists of more spin components and interacting channels than the spin-1/2 system. The interaction parameters are supposed to be spin-dependent, including a spin-mixing parameter which is absent in the spin-1/2 Fermi gas. The chemical potential, ground state energy and effective mass are calculated after elaborately dealing with the effective interaction and the self-energy. Contributions of each interaction term are derived within the second-order perturbation. It is found that the spin-mixing term always strengthens the ground state energy and effective mass.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground states in the double perovskite iridates $\textit{A}_2\textit{B}$IrO$_6$ ($\textit{A}$ = Ba, Sr; $\textit{B}$ = Lu, Sc)

Iridates with the 5$d^4$ electronic configuration have attracted recent interest due to reports of magnetically ordered ground states despite longstanding expectations that their strong spin-orbit coupling would generate a $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground state for each Ir 5+ ion. The major focus of prior research has been on the double perovskite iridates Ba 2 YIrO 6 and Sr 2 YIrO 6 , where the nature of the ground states (i.e., ordered vs nonmagnetic) is still controversial. Here, in this work, we present neutron powder diffraction, high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), magnetic susceptibility, and muon spin relaxation data on the related double perovskite iridates Ba 2 LuIrO 6 , Sr 2 LuIrO 6 , Ba 2 ScIrO 6 , and Sr 2 ScIrO 6 that enable us to gain a general understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties for this family of materials. Our HERFD-XAS and RIXS measurements establish $\textit{J}$ = 0 electronic ground states for the Ir 5+ ions in all cases, with similar values for Hund's coupling $J_H$ and the spin-orbit coupling constant $λ_{\text{SOC}}$. Our bulk susceptibility and muon spin relaxation data find no evidence for long-range magnetic order or spin freezing, but they do exhibit weak magnetic signals that are consistent with extrinsic local moments. Our results indicate that the large $λ_{\text{SOC}}$ is the key driving force behind the electronic and magnetic ground states realized in the $5d^4$ double perovskite iridates, which agrees well with conventional wisdom.

Noncollinear Ground State from a Four-Spin Chiral Exchange in a Tetrahedral Magnet

We propose a quartic chiral term m x m y m z ∇ • m for the energy density of a cubic ferromagnet with broken parity symmetry (point group T d ). We demonstrate that this interaction causes a phase transition from a collinear ferromagnetic state to a noncollinear magnetic cone ground state provided its strength exceeds the geometric mean of magnetic exchange and cubic anisotropy. The corresponding noncollinear ground state may also be additionally stabilized by an external magnetic field pointing along certain crystallographic directions. Here, the four-spin chiral exchange does also manifest itself in peculiar magnon spectra and favors spin waves with the wave vector that is perpendicular to the average magnetization direction.

An under-approximation of entropy for elemental multiconfigurational ground state electronic structures

A combinatorial approach has been applied to the allowable permutations of quantum electronic configurations under the constraints of Hund's rule for established ground state configurations toward an under-approximation of electronic structure entropy. Combined with a previously reported over-approximation, the approximations are used in conjunction in an attempt to bracket the upper and lower entropy limits for multiconfigurational ground state electronic structure entropy and compared to known standard molar entropies for the elements. This formality has been used for the application of a classical statistical mechanics methodology to be applied to the discrete sets of quantum mechanical states of Pu in order to calculate orbital occupancies in Pu's multiconfigurational ground state. Without consideration of the relative energies of various possible electronic configurations contributing to the multiconfigurational ground state, the calculations are performed under a general energy degeneracy assumption weighted to the number of permutations for specific configurations. The number of configurations assumed to significantly contribute is gradually constrained in order to approach a low-order approximation of orbital occupancies in Pu that are then compared to experimental and other calculated results from the literature.

Experimental Demonstration of the Dependence of the First Hyperpolarizability of Donor-Acceptor Substituted Polyenes on the Ground-State Polarization and Bond Length Alternation

The dependence of the product of the first hyperpolarizability, beta, and the ground-state dipole moment, mu, for a series of donor-acceptor polyenes with a large range of ground-state polarization, was measured in a variety of solvents by electric field induced second harmonic generation. The observed behavior of mu times beta as a function of ground-state polarization agrees well with theoretical predictions. In particular, as a function of increasing polarization, mu times beta was found to first increase, peak in a positive sense, decrease, pass through zero, become large and negative, and eventually peak in a negative sense.

Exact Ground State of Interacting Electrons in Magic Angle Graphene

One of the most remarkable theoretical findings in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is the emergence of ferromagnetic Slater determinants as exact ground states for the interacting Hamiltonian at the chiral limit. This discovery provides an explanation for the correlated insulating phase which has been experimentally observed at half filling. This work is the first mathematical study of interacting models in magic angle graphene systems. These include not only TBG but also TBG-like systems featuring four flat bands per valley, and twisted trilayer graphene systems with equal twist angles. We identify symmetries of the chiral limit of the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian that are responsible for characterizing the Hartree-Fock ground states as zero energy many-body ground states. Furthermore, for a general class of Hamiltonian, we establish criteria that the ferromagnetic Slater determinants are the unique ground states within the class of uniformly half-filled, translation invariant Slater determinants. We then demonstrate that these criteria can be explicitly verified for TBG and TBG-like systems at the chiral limit, using properties of Jacobi-θ$${\theta }$$ and Weierstrass-℘$${\wp }$$ functions.

Extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state to halide composition in FeCl 3 – x Br x

Mixed halide chemistry has recently been utilized to tune the intrinsic magnetic properties of transition-metal halides—one of the largest families of magnetic van der Waals materials. Prior studies have shown that the strength of exchange interactions, hence the critical temperature, can be tuned smoothly with halide composition for a given ground state. Here we show that the ground state itself can be altered by a small change of halide composition in FeCl 3–$x$ Br $x$ . Specifically, we find a threefold jump in the Néel temperature and a sign change in the Weiss temperature at $x$=0.08 corresponding to only 3% bromine doping. Using neutron scattering, we reveal a change of the ground state from spiral order in FeCl 3 to $A$-type antiferromagnetic order in FeBr 3 . From first-principles calculations, we show that a delicate balance between nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions is responsible for such a transition. In conclusion, these results demonstrate how varying the halide composition can tune the competing interactions and change the ground state of a spiral spin liquid system.

Prepare Ground States of Highly Frustrated Magnetic Clusters on Quantum Computers

Solving challenging problems in physical, chemical, and materials sciences is one of the most promising applications of quantum utility that can be realized on current noisy hardware, considering (i) the direct map (encoding) from the quantum particles and their interactions to the qubits and their entangling gates and (ii) the rapidly improved quantum hardware and advanced error-mitigation techniques. Understanding quantum spin liquid in frustrated magnetic materials is a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics and the nature of the ground-state phases is highly debated among researchers. Using IBM quantum computers with superconducting qubits, we implemented a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm to prepare the ground states of two 12-site cluster approximations of these highly frustrated magnetic materials. The interaction graphs of the two corresponding Hamiltonians are (a) the six-pointed star graph (a unit cell of the kagome lattice) and (b) the cuboctahedral graph (the kagome on a sphere). These are also two instances of Quantum Max Cut problem. With the VQE based on the Hamiltonian variational ansatz acting on a valence bond solid initial trial state, we prepared the ground states and obtained the exact ground energy on simulator and high accuracy on noisy hardware. The deep ansatz necessary to reach the ground state of the cuboctahedral graph indicates that it is a hard instance of Quantum Max Cut.

Ground state wave functions for single-band Hubbard models from the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation theory

The Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation (GCGM) theory is an ab initio quantum many-body theory for computing the ground-state properties of infinite systems. Previous applications of GCGM provides satisfying accuracy of ground-state energy of Hubbard models. In the current work, we address the problem of whether the obtained wave function is a good approximation for the true ground state by comparing the correlation functions with the benchmark data. Additionally, our results confirms the accuracy of the reproduced ground state of the regular Hubbard model, but with some exception for the frustrated Hubbard model.

Vibrationally resolved ionization cross sections for the ground state and electronically excited states of the hydrogen molecule and its isotopomeres

An existing set of vibrationally resolved ionization cross section for the ground state and the first excited states of the hydrogen molecule, based on the Gryzinski method, is extended by cross sections for the isotopomeres of H{sub 2} (i.e. D{sub 2}, T{sub 2}, HD, HT, and DT), both for non-dissociative and dissociative ionizations. The comparison of cross sections for non-dissociative ionization of H{sub 2} with results obtained by the Molecular Convergent Close-Coupling method gives a very good agreement. The compiled tables give non-dissociative and dissociative cross sections for the ground state and the five energetically lowest electronically excited states of H{sub 2} and its isotopomeres, in each case for the first 9 vibrational levels. Data for all vibrational levels of the excited states is available online.

Ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model

The ground-state energy, hybridization matrix element, local moment, and spin-density correlations of a one-dimensional, finite-chain, periodic, symmetric Anderson model are obtained by numerical simulations and compared with perturbation theory and strong-coupling results. It is found that the local f-electron spins are compensated by correlation with other f-electrons as well as band electrons leading to a nonmagnetic ground state.

Ground-state properties of light 4 n self-conjugate nuclei in ab initio no-core Monte Carlo shell model calculations with nonlocal N N interactions

We report J π = 0 + ground-state energies and point-proton radii of 4 He, 8 Be, 12 C, 16 O, and 20 Ne nuclei calculated by the ab initio no-core Monte Carlo shell model with the JISP16 and Daejeon16 nonlocal NN interactions. Ground-state energies are obtained in the basis spaces up to seven oscillator shells (N shell =7) with several oscillator energies (ℏω) around the optimal oscillator energy for the convergence of ground-state energies. These energy eigenvalues are extrapolated to obtain estimates of converged ground-state energies in each basis space using energy variances of computed energy eigenvalues. We further extrapolate these energy-variance-extrapolated energies obtained in the finite basis spaces to infinite basis-space results with an empirical exponential form. This form features a dependence on the basis-space size but is independent of the value of ℏω used for the harmonic-oscillator basis functions. Point-proton radii for these states of atomic nuclei are also calculated following techniques employed for the energies. From these results, it is found that the Daejeon16 NN interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately 16 O, while the JISP16 NN interaction provides good agreement with experimental data up to approximately 12 C. Beyond these nuclei, the interactions produce overbinding accompanied by radii that are too small. These findings suggest and encourage further revisions of nonlocal NN interactions towards the investigation of nuclear structure in heavier-mass regions.

Ground-state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Here, we have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site 5.55%≤δ≤12.5% using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping t'. In the positive t' side, we find a robust d-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without t' the ground state forms an insulating stripe phase with long-range CDW order but short-range spin-spin and SC correlations. In stark contrast to four-leg cylinders, our results show that the lightly doped Hubbard model on six-leg cylinders remains insulating in the negative t' side where the SC correlations decay exponentially with short correlation lengths. In the larger negative t' side, the doped holes form a novel holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin-spin correlations.

Adaptive Variational Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution Approach for Ground State Preparation

Abstract An adaptive variational quantum imaginary time evolution (AVQITE) approach is introduced that yields efficient representations of ground states for interacting Hamiltonians on near‐term quantum computers. It is based on McLachlan's variational principle applied to imaginary time evolution of variational wave functions. The variational parameters evolve deterministically according to equations of motions that minimize the difference to the exact imaginary time evolution, which is quantified by the McLachlan distance. Rather than working with a fixed variational ansatz, where the McLachlan distance is constrained by the quality of the ansatz, the AVQITE method iteratively expands the ansatz along the dynamical path to keep the McLachlan distance below a chosen threshold. This ensures the state is able to follow the quantum imaginary time evolution path in the system Hilbert space rather than in a restricted variational manifold set by a predefined fixed ansatz. AVQITE is used to prepare ground states of H 4 , H 2 O, and BeH 2 molecules, where it yields compact variational ansätze and ground state energies within chemical accuracy. Polynomial scaling of circuit depth with system size is shown through a set of AVQITE calculations of quantum spin models. Finally, quantum Lanczos calculations are demonstrated alongside AVQITE without additional quantum resource costs.

In-plane multi-q magnetic ground state of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6

We report Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the C3-symmetric sister compound Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 have uncovered a unique triple-q magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-q (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-q state, despite the system's strong non-C 3 -symmetric anisotropy. This robustness of multi-q orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as interactions beyond the bilinear order. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state appears more compatible with the so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropy than the Kitaev anisotropy, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

Ground-state rotational constants of /C-13/H3D

Rotational constants for the vibrational ground state of (C-13)H3D, which has been detected in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, are reported. High-resolution spectra of monodeuteromethane were obtained in the region 1800 to 2500 kaysers by a vacuum Fourier interferometer, and the values of the rotational constants B0, D0J, D0JK, H0JJJ, H0JJK and H0JKK were calculated by an analysis of ground-state combination differences in the nu 2(A1) band. The calculated frequency and intensity of this transition are found to be in agreement with the observed values.

A path integral ground state Monte Carlo algorithm for entanglement of lattice bosons

A ground state path integral quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced that allows for the study of entanglement in lattice bosons at zero temperature. The Rényi entanglement entropy between spatial subregions is explored across the phase diagram of the one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model for systems consisting of up to L=256 L = 256 sites at unit-filling without any restrictions on site occupancy, far beyond the reach of exact diagonalization. The favorable scaling of the algorithm is demonstrated through a further measurement of the Rényi entanglement entropy at the two dimensional superfluid-insulator critical point for large system sizes, confirming the existence of the expected entanglement boundary law in the ground state. The Rényi estimator is extended to measure the symmetry resolved entanglement that is operationally accessible as a resource for experimentally relevant lattice gases with fixed total particle number.
