Gettering capsule for removing oxygen from liquid lithium systems

Capsule consisting of tantalum shell lined with tantalum screen and partially filled with lithium and pieces of yttrium is immersed in hot lithium stream. Oxygen is removed from stream by being absorbed by gettering capsule. Oxygen passes through capsule wall and into lithium inside capsule where it reacts with yttrium to form Y2O3.

Theoretical analysis of oxygen diffusion at startup in an alkali metal heat pipe with gettered alloy walls

The diffusion of oxygen into, or out of, a gettered alloy exposed to oxygenated alkali liquid metal coolant, a situation arising in some high temperature heat transfer systems, was analyzed. The relation between the diffusion process and the thermochemistry of oxygen in the alloy and in the alkali metal was developed by making several simplifying assumptions. The treatment is therefore theoretical in nature. However, a practical example pertaining to the startup of a heat pipe with walls of T-111, a tantalum alloy, and lithium working fluid illustrates the use of the figures contained in the analysis.

Assessment of Zr-Fe-V getter alloy for gas-gap heat switches

A commercial Zr-V-Fe alloy (i.e., SAES Getters trade name alloy St-172) has been assessed as reversible hydrogen storage material for use in actuators of gas gap heat switches. Two prototype actuators containing the SAES St-172 material were built and operated for several thousand cycles to evaluate performance of the metal hydride system under conditions simulating heat switch operation.

Getters for Reliable Hermetic Packages

A variety of sealed-off devices such as cathode ray tubes (CRT's) electron tubes, plasma displays, particle accelarators and colliders vacuum thermal insulation, ultra-high vacuum (UHV), extreme high vacuum (XHV) systems for semiconductor processing, X-ray tubes, lamps, field-emission displays (FEDs) flat panel displays (FPDs), some microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and science instruments for space applications, nuclear systems require a vacuum for their successful operation.

Phase Change-Driven Negative Activation Energies in Pd/Carbon-Based/Organic Getter Hydrogenation Reactions

In this study, the hydrogenation of 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne (DPB) blended with carbon-supported Pd (DPB–Pd/C) in the form of pellets was investigated by isothermal–isobaric experiments at 1333 Pa of H 2 and in the temperature range of 291–315 K. The extracted kinetics were then used in conjunction with a complementary constant rate of H 2 input experimentation to model the performance of a DPB-catalysis/support system as a function of temperature and H 2 partial pressure. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed to shed light on the molecular level energetics of DPB and its intermediate states. A seemingly puzzling formation of alternate positive activation energy barrier (higher reaction rate with higher temperature) and negative activation energy barrier (higher reaction rate with lower temperature) zones during the hydrogenation process was discovered. However, this observed phenomenon can be logically explained in terms of the associated phase changes and H 2 transport in the material. This work provides a good illustration of a rarely encountered chemical process with a negative activation energy barrier.

Developing machine-learning potentials to study properties of the tritium formation and diffusivity in pure and defective Zircaloy-4 getters

Objective of this work was to study the formation of Sn impurity and hydride phases in Zr and study their impacts on the diffusion kinetics of 3 H by using DFT based ML approach. By implementing deep neural potential (DNP) technique, we developed potential for Zr-H and Sn impurity systems and validated the DNP by using DFT results. We found that by implementing machine learning approach, it is possible to achieve accuracy comparable to DFT level for the more realistic models by using less computational time and resources.

Multi-Constituent Airborne Contaminants Capture with Low Cost Oxide Getters and Mitigation of Cathode Poisoning in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

The technical effort and scientific findings, discussed in this report, documents operational barriers and associated long term performance stability challenges posed by the presence of trace airborne multi-constituent contaminants present in high-temperature electrochemical systems, including Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs), Ion Transport Membranes, and Gas Separation systems. Above systems, offering promises for cleanliness and energy efficiency, face challenges with electrode poisoning stemming from the presence of trace contaminants including gaseous Cr/B/Si vapors in the presence of intrinsic contaminants SO 2 /CO 2 /H 2 O gases. The study indicates that the long-term electrical performance degradation in SOFC systems can be traced to electrochemical, structural, and mechanical changes across cell, stack, and balance of plant components resulting from interactions with trace contaminants leading to increase in both ohmic and non-ohmic polarizations. The degradation primarily results from solid-state and gas-phase materials migration, electrode poisoning, and interactions at the cell and stack levels. Cathode degradation emerges as a significant factor impacting overall SOFC performance, especially related to the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic airborne impurities such as SOx, CrOx(OH)y, SOx, Si(OH)x, and HBOx. Although at trace levels, prolong systems operation at higher airflow (3-10X stoichiometric) allow the accumulation of contaminants within the cell components leading to electrical performance degradation through poisoning and electrode deactivation.

A Real Attention-Getter

While most parents would agree that playing videos games is the antithesis of time well spent for their children, recent advances involving NASA biofeedback technology are proving otherwise. The same techniques used to measure brain activity in NASA pilots during flight simulation exercises are now a part of a revolutionary video game system that is helping to improve overall mental awareness for Americans of all ages, including those who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
