Voltage-Based Strategies for Preventing Battery Degradation under Diverse Fast-Charging Conditions

Maintaining safe operating conditions is a key challenge for high-performance lithium-ion battery applications. The lithium-plating reaction remains a risk during charging, but limited studies consider the highly variable charging conditions possible in commercial cells. Here we combine pseudo-2D electrochemical modeling with data visualization methods to reveal important relationships between the measurable cell voltage and difficult-to-predict Li-plating onset criteria. An extensively validated model is used to compute Li plating for thousands of multistep charging conditions spanning diverse rates, temperatures, states-of-charge, and cell aging. Here we observe an empirical cell operating voltage limit below which plating does not occur across all conditions, and this limit varies with the battery state-of-charge and aging. A model sensitivity analysis also indicates that, when comparing two charging voltage profiles, the capacity difference at 4.0 V correlates well with the difference in the plating onset capacity. These results encourage simple strategies for Li-plating prevention that are complementary to existing battery controls.

Methods to Calculate Electronic Excited-State Dynamics for Molecules on Large Metal Clusters with Many States: Ensuring Fast Overlap Calculations and a Robust Choice of Phase

Here, we present an efficient set of methods for propagating excited-state dynamics involving a large number of configuration interaction singles (CIS) or Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) single-reference excited states. Specifically, (i) following Head-Gordon et al., we implement an exact evaluation of the overlap of singly-excited CIS/TDA electronic states at different nuclear geometries using a biorthogonal basis and (ii) we employ a unified protocol for choosing the correct phase for each adiabat at each geometry. For many-electron systems, the combination of these techniques significantly reduces the computational cost of integrating the electronic Schrodinger equation and imposes minimal overhead on top of the underlying electronic structure calculation. As a demonstration, we calculate the electronic excited-state dynamics for a hydrogen molecule scattering off a silver metal cluster, focusing on high-lying excited states, where many electrons can be excited collectively and crossings are plentiful. Interestingly, we find that the high-lying, plasmon-like collective excitation spectrum changes with nuclear dynamics, highlighting the need to simulate non-adiabatic nuclear dynamics and plasmonic excitations simultaneously. In the future, the combination of methods presented here should help theorists build a mechanistic understanding of plasmon-assisted charge transfer and excitation energy relaxation processes near a nanoparticle or metal surface.

Fast and Simple Ag/Cu Ion Exchange on Cu Foil for Anode-Free Lithium-Metal Batteries

Lithium-metal batteries with zero excess lithium on the anode side paired with a fully lithiated cathode are regarded as a form of the highest energy-density configuration. Unfortunately, the continuous lithium loss over cycling from a limited amount of lithium reservoir significantly degrades the overall cell performance in the anode-free system. To mitigate the deterioration, modifying the current collector for enhanced lithium cycling is an indispensable route. Here, we apply a Ag/Cu ion exchange to precipitate micro-sized Ag particles on the Cu current collector to enhance the lithium reversibility via (de)alloying process. Further, we show a smoother morphology of lithium upon alloying, which leads to a lowered nucleation potential as well as increased average Coulombic efficiency in Li||Cu cells regardless of electrolyte formulation. The preferred lithium adsorption on Ag and AgLi over Cu is demonstrated with density functional theory calculations, which supports that Li is forming a gamma-phase alloy in the last stage rather than being deposited beneath the alloy. Lastly, this simple Cu foil modification enhances lithium reversibility and reduces its nucleation barrier, thus mitigating the capacity fade of a Cu||LiFePO 4 with reduced polarization.

Timing characterization of fast hCMOS sensors

We describe a method of analyzing gate profile data for ultrafast x-ray imagers that allows pixel-by-pixel determination of temporal sensitivity in the presence of substantial background oscillations. With this method, systematic timing errors in gate width and gate arrival time of up to 1 ns (in a 2 ns wide gate) can be removed. In-sensor variations in gate arrival and gate width are observed, with variations in each up to 0.5 ns. This method can be used to estimate the coarse timing of the sensor, even if errors up to several ns are present.
