EpIC: novel Monte Carlo generator for exclusive processes

Abstract We present the EpIC Monte Carlo event generator for exclusive processes based on generalised parton distributions. EpIC utilises the PARTONS framework, which provides a flexible software architecture and a variety of modelling options for the partonic description of the nucleon. The generator offers a comprehensive set of features, including simulation of a variety of exclusive processes and radiative corrections. It may be used both in the analysis of experimental data, as well as for impact studies, especially for the future electron-ion colliders.

Spin density matrix elements in exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised μ + and μ – beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/c 2 < W < 17.0 GeV/c 2 , 1.0 (GeV/c) 2 < $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 < 10.0 (GeV/c) 2 and 0.01 (GeV/c) 2 < $p_{\textrm{T}}^2$ < 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 . Here, W denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\textrm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

Measurement of exclusive pion pair production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}={7}\,\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

The exclusive production of pion pairs in the process $pp$ → $pp π$ + $π$ - has been measured at $\sqrt{s}={7}\,\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, using $80 µb$ -1 of low-luminosity data. The pion pairs were detected in the ATLAS central detector while outgoing protons were measured in the forward ATLAS ALFA detector system. This rep resents the first use of proton tagging to measure an exclusive hadronic final state at the LHC. A cross-section measurement is performed in two kinematic regions defined by the pro ton momenta, the pion rapidities and transverse momenta, and the pion–pion invariant mass. Cross-section values of $4.8 ± 1.0$ ${(stat)}^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ $(syst) µ b$ and $9 ± 6$ ${(stat)}^{+2}_{-2}$ $(syst) µ b$ are obtained in the two regions; they are compared with theoretical models and provide a demonstration of the feasibility of measurements of this type.

VAIM-CFF: a variational autoencoder inverse mapper solution to Compton form factor extraction from deeply virtual exclusive reactions

We develop a new methodology for extracting Compton form factors (CFFs) from deeply virtual exclusive reactions such as the unpolarized DVCS cross section using a specialized inverse problem solver, a variational autoencoder inverse mapper (VAIM). The VAIM-CFF framework not only allows us access to a fitted solution set possibly containing multiple solutions in the extraction of all 8 CFFs from a single cross section measurement, but also accesses the lost information contained in the forward mapping from CFFs to cross section. We investigate various assumptions and their effects on the predicted CFFs such as cross section organization, number of extracted CFFs, use of uncertainty quantification technique, and inclusion of prior physics information. We then use dimensionality reduction techniques such as principal component analysis to visualize the missing physics information tracked in the latent space of the VAIM framework. Through re-framing the extraction of CFFs as an inverse problem, we gain access to fundamental properties of the problem not comprehensible in standard fitting methodologies: exploring the limits of the information encoded in deeply virtual exclusive experiments.

Hard exclusive $\pi^{+}n$ electro production beam spin asymmetries off the proton in the GPD and TDA regimes

Hard exclusive \pi^{+} π + n electro-production can be used to gain access to the 3D nucleon structure. The QCD factorisation mechanism in the “nearly forward region” ( t/Q^{2} t / Q 2 small) allows a description by Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), while for the “nearly backward” kinematic region ( u/Q^{2} u / Q 2 small) a description based on nucleon to pion transitions (TDAs) is available. The paper presents a measurement of single beam spin asymmetries to extract the A^{\sin\phi}_{LU} A L U sin ϕ moments and the related cross section ratio \sigma_{LT^\prime}/\sigma_{0} σ L T ′ / σ 0 from the hard exclusive \pi^{+} π + channel off the unpolarized hydrogen target in a wide range of kinematics based on data taken with the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. In addition, under forward angles a detailed multidimensional study will be presented based on CLAS12 data and compared to theoretical predictions.

Cost of Fish Exclusion Technologies for Hydropower

This dataset compiles data on the costs of environmental mitigations related to fish exclusion for 35 hydropower projects based on documents obtained from the U.S Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Data for all measures and their associated project-specific information, including installed and hydraulic capacities, were manually extracted from environmental impact statements and/or environmental assessment (EIS/EA) documents. All data were consolidated in a comma-separated (.csv) file, referred to as the Cost of Fish Exclusion Technologies for Hydropower Database.

Exclusive $|V_{ub}|$ determinations using Padé Approximants

We determine the CKM parameter |V ub | from the exclusive semileptonic decays B→πℓν ℓ and B s →Kℓν ℓ , employing Lattice QCD theoretical information on the form factors in combination with experimental measurements of the differential branching ratio distributions. Using Pad\'{e} approximants to the participating form factors we obtain |V ub |=3.86(11)x10 -3 and |V ub |=3.58(9)x10 -3 from the analyses of the individual decay channels, respectively, and |V ub |=3.68(5)x10 -3 from a simultaneous analysis of both decays. Our results highlight the importance of the decay B s →Kμν μ in complementing the traditional B→πℓν ℓ one in the exclusive determination of |V ub | , and strengthens the case for precise measurements of the differential B s →Kℓν ℓ decay rate with a finer resolution of the q 2 bins, as it would definitely allow achieving more conclusive results for |V ub | .

Unexpected Breakdown of Collinear Factorisation at Leading Twist in Exclusive π 0 γ Photoproduction Due to Glauber Pinch

We demonstrate the breakdown of collinear factorisation for the exclusive photoproduction at leading twist of a pair, sensitive to both quark and gluon GPD channels. For the very first time in the case of an exclusive process, we demonstrate the breakdown of collinear factorisation through soft-to-collinear Glauber exchanges. We show that the amplitude fails to factorise due to the presence of a Glauber pinch, which has the same power counting as the standard collinear pinch. The Glauber pinch that occurs here is peculiar, since the mechanism that produces it involves two-loop integrals. This is corroborated by an explicit calculation of the gluon GPD channel to pair photoproduction, which leads to a divergent amplitude already at leading twist-2 and at leading order in . On the other hand, for processes where the gluon GPD channel is forbidden, for example when the outgoing meson is a charged pion or a rho meson, collinear factorisation works without any issues.

Exclusive-or logic circuit has useful properties

Single, simple exclusive-or logic connective eliminates excessive hardware and the number of interconnections between logic modules. This circuit performs the necessary switching for the exclusive-or operation and amplifies, restores, and inverts the signal.

Exclusive Reactions Involving Pions and Nucleons

The HZETRN code requires inclusive cross sections as input. One of the methods used to calculate these cross sections requires knowledge of all exclusive processes contributing to the inclusive reaction. Conservation laws are used to determine all possible exclusive reactions involving strong interactions between pions and nucleons. Inclusive particle masses are subsequently determined and are needed in cross-section calculations for inclusive pion production.

Evidence for exclusively inorganic formation of magnetite in Martian meteorite ALH84001

Magnetite crystals produced by terrestrial magnetotactic bacterium MV-1 are elongated on a [111] crystallographic axis, in a so-called truncated hexa-Octahedral shape. This morphology has been proposed to constitute a biomarker (i.e., formed only in biogenic processes). A subpopulation of magnetite crystals associated with carbonate globules in Martian meteorite ALH84001 is reported to have this morphology, and the observation has been taken as evidence for biological activity on Mars. In this study, we present evidence for the exclusively inorganic origin of [111]-elongated magnetite crystals in ALH84001. We report three-dimensional(3-D) morphologies for approx.1000 magnetite crystals extracted from: (1) thermal decomposition products of Fe-rich carbonate produced by inorganic hydrothermal precipitation in laboratory experiments; (2) carbonate globules in Martian meteoriteeALH84001; and (3) cells of magnetotactic bacterial strain MV-1. The 3-D morphologies were derived by fitting 3-D shape models to two-dimensional bright-field transmission-electron microscope (TEAM) images obtained at a series of viewing angles. The view down the {110} axes closest to the [111] elongation axis of magnetite crystals ([111]x{110) not equal to 0) provides a 2-D projection that uniquely discriminates among the three [111]-elongated magnetite morphologies found in these samples: [111]-elongated truncated hexaoctahedron ([111]-THO), [111]-elongated cubo-octahedron ([111]-ECO), and [111]-elongated simple octahedron ([111]-ESO). All [111] -elongated morphologies are present in the three types of sample, but in different proportions. In the ALH84001 Martian meteorite and in our inorganic laboratory products, the most common [111]-elongated magnetite crystal morphology is [111]-ECO. In contrast, the most common morphology for magnetotactic bacterial strain MV-1 is [111]-THO. These results show that: (1) the morphology of [111]-elongated magnetite crystals associated with the carbonate globules in Martian meteorite ALH84001 is replicated by an inorganic process; and (2) the most common crystal morphology for biogenic (MV-1) magnetite is distinctly different from that in both ALH84001 and our inorganic laboratory products. Therefore, [111]-elongated magnetite crystals in ALH84001 do not constitute, as previously claimed, a robust biosignature and, in fact, an exclusively inorganic origin for the magnetite is fully consistent with our results. Furthermore, the inorganic synthesis method, i.e., the thermal decomposition of hydrothermally precipitated Fe-rich carbonate, is a process analogue for formation of the magnetite on Mars. Namely, precipitation of carbonate globules from carbonate-rich hydrothermal solutions followed at some later time by a thermal pulse, perhaps in association with meteoritic impact or volcanic processes on the Martian surface.

Exclusive QCD Factorization and Single Transverse Polarization Phenomena at High-Energy Colliders

This Ph.D. thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first part focuses on hard exclusive scattering processes in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at high energies, while the second part delves into spin phenomena at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Hard exclusive scattering processes play a crucial role in QCD at high energies, providing unique insights into the confined partonic dynamics within hadrons, complementing inclusive processes. Studying these processes within the QCD factorization approach yields the generalized parton distribution (GPD), a nonperturbative parton correlation function that offers a three-dimensional tomographic parton image within a hadron. However, the experimental measurement of these processes poses significant challenges. This thesis will review the factorization formalism for related processes, examine the limitations of some widely used processes, and introduce two novel processes that enhance the sensitivity to GPD, particularly its dependence on the parton momentum fraction x. The second part of the thesis centers on spin phenomena, specifically single spin production, at the LHC. Noting that a single transverse polarization can be generated even in an unpolarized collision, this research proposes two new jet substructure observables: one for boosted top quark jets and another for high-energy gluon jets. The observation of these phenomena paves the way for innovative tools in LHC phenomenology, enabling both precision measurements and the search for new physics.

Measuring the Beam-Spin Asymmetry of Hard Exclusive ¿0 Production off the Neutron with CLAS12

Over the course of the last couple of decades, Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs) have become a compelling area of focus in both theoretical and experimental research in the ?eld of hadronic structure. GPDs can be indirectly accessed via observables in hard exclusive reactions such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP). In these reactions, an incident lepton scatters o? an individual quark within the target nucleon via the exchange of a virtual photon, and a real photon (DVCS) or a meson (DVMP) are emitted as a result. This thesis presents an analysis of Deeply Virtual ?0 Meson Production o? the neutron in the deuteron (nDV?0P). The data were taken with the CLAS12 detector, which is housed in the experimental Hall B at the Je?erson National Laboratory (JLab) in Virginia, USA. A longitudinally polarised electron beam delivered by JLab?s Continuous Electron Beam accelerator Facility (CEBAF), at an energy of 10.2 and 10.6 GeV, was incident on a liquid deuterium target housed within the CLAS12 detector assembly. The nDV?0P channel is sensitive to the lesser-studied chiral-odd transversity GPDs. GPDs are accessed indirectly via observables related to the cross-sections of hard exclusive processes. One such example is the beam-spin asymmetry (?LU) as a function of Trento-?, the angle between the leptonic plane and the hadronic plane which are de?ned with the beam and scattered electron, and with the recoiling neutron and reconstructed ?0, respectively. Despite the limited statistics, the observable ?LU was successfully extracted for eight kinematic bins (four in Mandelstam ?, and two in ??). This is a ?rst measurement for nDV?0P in the phase-space which is now available with CLAS12 in the 12 GeV era of JLab.

Impact of Two-Body Currents on Semi-Exclusive Lepton-Nucleus Reactions

We generalize the spectral-function formalism to describe two-nucleon knockout processes in exclusive kinematics. Significant improvements are introduced both in the treatment of the current operators entering the $Δ$-current contribution and in the modeling of correlations between the two struck nucleons, including a consistent treatment of isospin dependence and the explicit incorporation of angular correlations. The framework is validated through comparisons with relativistic Fermi-gas calculations and with semi-exclusive electron-nucleus scattering data. Our results demonstrate that an accurate description of nuclear dynamics plays a crucial role in modeling this reaction mechanism. We further present a study of selected electroweak observables relevant to neutrino-scattering experiments.

EXCLUSIVE NEUTRAL PION ELECTROPRODUCTION CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENTSWITHANEUTRALPARTICLE SPECTROMETER

Deep Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), the exclusive electron-proton scattering process ep ¿e'p'¿, provides access to generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which correlate information about the longitudinal momentum and transverse spatial structure of quarks inside the nucleon. Experiment E12-13-010 in Hall C at Jefferson Lab was designed to take high-precision measurements of the DVCS cross section over an extended kinematic range using the newly commissioned Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS). The NPS features a high-resolution electromagnetic calorimeter and a streaming data acquisition system optimized for operation at high luminosities. This thesis presents the detector and analysis work carried out to support the NPS DVCS program. In particular, it focuses on the hardware design, calibration, and performance of the calorimeter. A development of a waveform reconstruction analysis of the calorimeter signals enabled improved extraction of pulse amplitudes and times. The waveform analysis was also extended to operate in a multithreaded environment, substantially reducing processing time for large datasets. Analysis of exclusive neutral pion electroproduction events in the calorimeter gives a strong validation of the calorimeter’s performance and resolution. Together these developments establish a foundation for future analyses and extraction of the DVCS cross section and its use in constraining the GPDs.
