The Tribomechadynamics Research Challenge: Confronting blind predictions for the linear and nonlinear dynamics of a thin-walled jointed structure with measurement results

The present article summarizes the submissions to the Tribomechadynamics Research Challenge announced in 2021. The task was a blind prediction of the vibration behavior of a system comprising a thin plate clamped on two sides via bolted joints. Both geometric and frictional contact nonlinearities are expected to be relevant. Provided were the CAD models and technical drawings of all parts as well as assembly instructions. The main objective was to predict the frequency and damping ratio of the lowest-frequency mode as function of the amplitude. Many different prediction approaches were pursued, ranging from well-known methods to very recently developed ones. After the submission deadline, the system has been fabricated and tested. The aim of this article is to evaluate the current state of the art in modeling and vibration prediction, and to provide directions for future methodological advancements.

Coherent diffraction imaging in the undergraduate laboratory

We present an undergraduate optics instructional laboratory designed to teach skills relevant to a broad range of modern scientific and technical careers. In this laboratory project, students image a custom aperture using coherent diffraction imaging, while learning principles and skills related to digital image processing and computational imaging, including multidimensional Fourier analysis, iterative phase retrieval, noise reduction, finite dynamic range, and sampling considerations. After briefly reviewing these imaging principles, we describe the required experimental materials and setup for this project. Our experimental apparatus is both inexpensive and portable, and a software application we developed for interactive data analysis is freely available.

Probing Quantum Telecloning on Superconducting Quantum Processors

Quantum information cannot be perfectly cloned, but approximate copies of quantum information can be generated. Quantum telecloning combines approximate quantum cloning, more typically referred to as quantum cloning, and quantum teleportation. Quantum telecloning allows approximate copies of quantum information to be constructed by separate parties, using the classical results of a Bell measurement made on a prepared quantum telecloning state. Quantum telecloning can be implemented as a circuit on quantum computers using a classical coprocessor to compute classical feedforward instructions using if statements based on the results of a midcircuit Bell measurement in real time. We present universal symmetric optimal 1 → M telecloning circuits and experimentally demonstrate these quantum telecloning circuits for M = 2 up to M = 10, natively executed with real-time classical control systems on IBM Quantum superconducting processors, known as dynamic circuits. We perform the cloning procedure on many different message states across the Bloch sphere, on seven IBM Quantum processors, optionally using the error suppression technique X–X sequence digital dynamical decoupling. Two circuit optimizations are utilized: one that removes ancilla qubits for M = 2,3 , and one that reduces the total number of gates in the circuit but still uses ancilla qubits. Parallel single-qubit tomography with maximum likelihood estimation density matrix reconstruction is used in order to compute the mixed-state density matrices of the clone qubits, and clone quality is measured using quantum fidelity. These results present one of the largest and most comprehensive noisy intermediate-scale quantum computer experimental analyses on (single qubit) quantum telecloning to date. The clone fidelity sharply decreases to 0.5 for M > 5 , but for M = 2 , we are able to achieve a mean clone fidelity of up to 0.79 using dynamical decoupling.

ESS-DIVE reporting format for leaf-level gas exchange data and metadata

Here we present documentation of the ESS-DIVE reporting format for leaf-level gas exchange data and metadata. This reporting format provides guidance to data contributors on how to store data to maximize their discoverability, facilitate their efficient reuse, and add value to individual datasets. For data users, the reporting format will better allow data repositories to optimize data search and extraction, and more readily integrate similar data into harmonized synthesis products. The reporting format specifies data table variable naming and unit conventions, as well as metadata characterizing experimental conditions and protocols. For common data types that were the focus of this initial version of the reporting format, i.e., survey measurements, dark respiration, carbon dioxide and light response curves, and parameters derived from those measurements, we took a further step of defining required additional data that would maximize the potential reuse of those data types. To aid data contributors and the development of data ingest tools by data repositories we provided a translation table comparing the outputs of common gas exchange instruments. The reporting format presented here is intended to form a foundation for future development that will incorporate additional data types and variables as gas exchange systems and measurement approaches advance in the future. The reporting format documentation is maintained and updated on the ESS-DIVE Community Space GitHub. This data package is the first published version of this reporting format, and comprises a zip file of the complete content of https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-leaf-gas-exchange v1.0. The zip contains the reporting format description, guidelines, variable tables and instructions in GitHub markdown language (*.md) and 2 metadata templates as spreadsheets with drop down options (*.xlsx files, also function in GoogleSheets).

Groundwater and Surface Water Flow (GSFLOW) model files for the East River, Colorado

The data package contains model input files and executables for the East River, Colorado (750 km2) located in the headwaters of the Upper Colorado River Basin. The code applied is the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Groundwater and Surface Water Flow (GSFLOW) model. The model contains a 100-m grid resolution to represent topographic complexity and a daily timestep accounts for energy and water partitioning between the snowpack, vegetation, soil zone and bedrock. The land surface model is dynamically linked to a three-dimensional groundwater flow model that allows for streamflow gaining and losing conditions. The groundwater model accounts for nine stratigraphic units and extends 400 m below land surface. Using this modeling framework we explore historical water budgets (water year 1987-2022) and the influence of seasonal warming and associated mechanisms driving groundwater declines and streamflow loss. A Readme_062424.txt file provides instructions on how to download all files. Input and output files are provided for the historical simulation representative of water years 1987 to 2022 (i.e. baseline) and the all-year +4C warming scenario. Instructions are provided to run the seasonal warming scenarios with warming applied only to the autumn, winter, spring or summer months. Modeled output used in figures for Carroll et al., 2024 are also provided with metadata describing where these data were obtained. This dataset additionally includes a file-level metadata (flmd.csv) file that lists each file contained in the dataset with associated metadata; and a data dictionary (dd.csv) file that contains column/row headers used throughout the files along with a definition, units, and data type.Updated on 06-24-2024: The dataset was updated to include model outputs (updated base.zip and 4C.zip files), figure source files (Figure_Source_Files.zip), an updated Readme file (Readme_062424.txt), climate input files (climate_input_files.zip), and the adoption of ESS-DIVE File Level Metadata and CSV reporting formats (inclusion of flmd.csv and dd.csv files).

Stability Quantification for Consensus-Based Power Flow Control between Transmission and Distribution Power Systems

With increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), distribution systems (DS) with DERs are expected to provide proactive grid services. The result is that power references, or known as dispatch signals, required for DS can become faster changing than in legacy power system. Consensus-based integral controls have been proposed for the purpose of coordinating power generations of DERs in DS to match the power references. These existing controls assume the integral control signal to be sufficiently slow or constant, and ignore the potential dynamics of the integral controller when tracking more varying power references. Therefore, in this paper we present an improvement for such controls by deriving the stability condition utilizing generalized Nyquist criterion. The stability condition is quantified by a set of integral gains that guarantee stability in closed-loop system without assuming a constant integral signal. A rule-of-thumb criterion is also derived to instruct the design of the consensus topology that can provide faster convergence rate for the closed-loop system. Here, the stability and convergence improvements developed in this paper are demonstrated and verified through numerical examples.
