Open-closed string duality, branes, and topological recursion

We consider matrix models exhibiting open-closed string duality in two-dimensional string theories with various amounts of supersymmetry. In particular, a relationship between matrix models in the β = 2 Wigner-Dyson class and models in the (1 + 2Γ, 2) Altland-Zirnbauer class relates the perturbative solutions of the two systems’ string equations. Point-like operator insertions in the closed string theory are mapped to the topological expansion of the free energy in the open string theory. We compute correlation functions of macroscopic loop operators and FZZT branes in a general topological gravity background. The relationship between the topological recursion of moduli space volumes and branes is discussed by analyzing the Virasoro conditions in the matrix models.

Fracton-elasticity duality in twisted moiré superlattices

We formulate a fracton-elasticity duality for twisted moiré superlattices, taking into account that they are incommensurate crystals with dissipative phason dynamics. From a dual tensor-gauge formulation, as compared to standard crystals, we identify twice the number of conserved charges that describe topological lattice defects, namely, disclinations and another type of defects that we dub discompressions. Furthermore, the key implication of these conservation laws is that both glide and climb motions of lattice dislocations are suppressed, indicating that dislocation networks may become exceptionally stable. We also generalize our results to other planar incommensurate crystals and quasicrystals.

Swampland cobordism conjecture and non-Abelian duality groups

We study the cobordism conjecture of McNamara and Vafa which asserts that the bordism group of quantum gravity is trivial. In the context of type IIB string theory compactified on a circle, this predicts the presence of D7-branes. On the other hand, the non-Abelian structure of the IIB duality group SL (2, Z) implies the existence of additional [p, q] 7-branes. We find that this additional information is instead captured by the space of closed paths on the moduli space of elliptic curves parameterizing distinct values of the type IIB axio-dilaton. This description allows to recover the full structure of non-Abelian braid statistics for 7-branes. Combining the cobordism conjecture with an earlier Swampland conjecture by Ooguri and Vafa, we argue that only certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset$ SL(2, Z) specifying genus zero modular curves can appear in 8D F-theory vacua. This leads to a successful prediction for the allowed Mordell–Weil torsion groups for 8D F-theory vacua.

Aggregation‐Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl‐Based Cyclophanes

Abstract Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium‐based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time‐resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine‐tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio‐applications.

A duality-based coupling of Cosserat crystal plasticity and phase field theories for modeling grain refinement

High-rate deformation processes of metals entail intense grain refinement and special attention needs to be paid to capture the evolution of microstructure. In this article, a new formulation for coupling Cosserat crystal plasticity and phase field is developed. A common approach is to penalize kinematic incompatibility between lattice orientation and displacement-based elastic rotation. However, this can lead to significant solution sensitivity to the penalty parameter, resulting in low accuracy and convergence rates. To address these issues, a duality-based formulation is developed which directly imposes the rotational kinematic compatibility. A weak inf-sup-based skew-symmetric stress projection is introduced to suppress instabilities present in the dual formulation. An additional least squares stabilization is introduced to suppress the spurious lattice rotation with a suitable parameter range derived analytically and validated numerically. The required high-order continuity is attained by the reproducing kernel approximation. It is observed that equal order displacement-rotation-phase field approximations are stable, which allows efficient employment of the same set of shape functions for all independent variables. The proposed formulation is shown to yield superior accuracy and convergence with marginal parameter sensitivity compared to the penalty-based approach and successfully captures the dominant rotational recrystallization mechanism including block dislocation structures and grain boundary migration.

Fibers add flavor. Part II. 5d SCFTs, gauge theories, and dualities

In [1, 2] we proposed an approach based on graphs to characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise as compactifications of 6d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1 , 0) SCFTs. The graphs, so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFDs), are derived using the realization of 5d SCFTs via M-theory on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with a canonical singularity. In this paper we complement this geometric approach by connecting the CFD of an SCFT to its weakly coupled gauge theory or quiver descriptions and demonstrate that the CFD as recovered from the gauge theory approach is consistent with that as determined by geometry. To each quiver description we also associate a graph, and the embedding of this graph into the CFD that is associated to an SCFT provides a systematic way to enumerate all possible consistent weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions of this SCFT. Furthermore, different embeddings of gauge theory graphs into a fixed CFD can give rise to new UV-dualities for which we provide evidence through an analysis of the prepotential, and which, for some examples, we substantiate by constructing the M-theory geometry in which the dual quiver descriptions are manifest.

Precision test of gauge/gravity duality in D0-brane matrix model at low temperature

We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large N and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller N than in the BFSS matrix model are possible. Hence, we can perform a precision measurement of the large N continuum energy at the lowest temperatures to date. The energy is in perfect agreement with supergravity predictions including estimations of α'-corrections from previous simulations. At the lowest temperature where we can simulate efficiently (T = 0.25λ 1/3 , where λ is the ’t Hooft coupling), the difference in energy to the pure supergravity prediction is less than 10%. Furthermore, we can extract the coefficient of the 1/N 4 corrections at a fixed temperature with good accuracy, which was previously unknown.

One-loop corrections to the celestial chiral algebra from Koszul Duality

We consider self-dual Yang-Mills theory (SDYM) in four dimensions and its lift to holomorphic BF theory on twistor space. Following the work of Costello and Paquette, we couple SDYM to a quartic axion field, which guarantees associativity of the (extended) celestial chiral algebra at the quantum level. We demonstrate how to reproduce their one-loop quantum deformation to the chiral algebra using Koszul duality.

On-shell correlators and color-kinematics duality in curved symmetric spacetimes

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity — the on-shell correlator — which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a mapping of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

Role of the Solvent–Surfactant Duality of Ionic Liquids in Directing Two-Dimensional Particle Assembly

Nanoparticle self-assembly plays a key role in formation of superlattices, which exhibit remarkable physical and chemical properties. However, controlling assembly remains a challenge partly due to a lack of understanding of the assembly dynamics and the difficulty in linking interfacial solution properties to interparticle forces. In this study, using liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy, self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (NPs) into superlattices in mixtures of water and ionic liquid (IL) was visualized, revealing a dual role of the IL in the assembly process. At intermediate concentrations, the IL acts as a surfactant stabilizing the particles at a well-defined equilibrium separation corresponding to the length of hydrogen bonded IL cations adsorbed onto neighboring NPs. Analysis of the interparticle forces reveals attractive long-range interactions of a van der Waals nature. At separations of 1-3 nm, interactions are dominated by attractive ion correlation and repulsive hydration forces giving rise to an energy minimum at 1.5 nm separation. The superlattice is further stabilized by hydrogen bonding, which shifts the equilibrium interparticle distance to 1.1 nm. In contrast, at higher concentrations, IL accumulates and forms a structured network in the gap between nanoparticles, where it acts as a solvent that eliminates the repulsive barrier and thus promotes particle coalescence. This solvent-surfactant duality of IL opens new opportunities for their use in directing particle assembly.

Beyond Duality: Rationalizing Repulsive Coulomb Barriers in Host–Guest Cyclodextrin–Dodecaborate Complexes

The repulsive Coulomb barrier (RCB), an intrinsic potential energy barrier along electron detachment or charge-separation coordinates in multiply charged anions (MCAs), provides dynamic stability to MCAs whose electronic and thermodynamic stabilities are largely dictated by strong internal Coulomb repulsions. Spectroscopic and theoretical characterizations of the RCB have been focused on isolated MCAs. In this work, we extend the RCB investigation beyond the previous scope by including noncovalent host–guest cyclodextrin-closo-dodecaborate dianionic complexes χCD·B 12 X 12 2– (χ = α, β, γ; X = H, F–I). Here, photodechment photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the existence of two distinctly different RCBs, derived from detaching electrons from the guest dianions (RCB 1 ) or ionizing the host neutrals (RCB 2 ), respectively, with the latter being substantially smaller than the former. In conclusion, theoretical calculations support the duality of RCBs in these complexes and further exhibit highly anisotropic nature of the RCBs.

Mechanistic Duality of Bacterial Efflux Substrates and Inhibitors: Example of Simple Substituted Cinnamoyl and Naphthyl Amides

Antibiotic resistance poses an immediate and growing threat to human health. Multidrug efflux pumps are promising targets for overcoming antibiotic resistance with small-molecule therapeutics. Previously, we identified a diaminoquinoline acrylamide, NSC-33353, as a potent inhibitor of the AcrAB–TolC efflux pump in Escherichia coli. This inhibitor potentiates the antibacterial activities of novobiocin and erythromycin upon binding to the membrane fusion protein AcrA. It is also a substrate for efflux and lacks appreciable intrinsic antibacterial activity of its own in wild-type cells. Here, we have modified the substituents of the cinnamoyl group of NSC-33353, giving rise to analogs that retain the ability to inhibit efflux, lost the features of the efflux substrates, and gained antibacterial activity in wild-type cells. The replacement of the cinnamoyl group with naphthyl isosteres generated compounds that lack antibacterial activity but are both excellent efflux pump inhibitors and substrates. Surprisingly, these inhibitors potentiate the antibacterial activity of novobiocin but not erythromycin. Surface plasmon resonance experiments and molecular docking suggest that the replacement of the cinnamoyl group with naphthyl shifts the affinity of the compounds away from AcrA to the AcrB transporter, making them better efflux substrates and changing their mechanism of inhibition. These results provide new insights into the duality of efflux substrate/inhibitor features in chemical scaffolds that will facilitate the development of new efflux pump inhibitors.

Gauge-free duality in pure square spin ice: Topological currents and monopoles

We consider pure square spin ice, that is, square ice, where only nearest neighbors are coupled. The gauge-free duality between the perpendicular and collinear structure leads to a natural description in terms of topological currents and charges as the relevant degrees of freedom. That, in turn, can be expressed via a continuous field theory where the discrete spins are subsumed into entropic interactions among charges and currents. This approach produces structure factors, correlations, and susceptibilities for spins, monopoles, and currents. It also generalizes the height formalism of the disordered ground state to non-zero temperature. The framework can be applied to the zoology of recent experimental results, especially realizations on quantum annealers, and can be expanded to include longer range interactions.

Strong-Weak Duality via Jordan-Wigner Transformation: Using Fermionic Methods for Strongly Correlated su(2) Spin Systems

The Jordan-Wigner transformation establishes a duality between $su(2)$ and fermionic algebras. We present qualitative arguments and numerical evidence that when mapping spins to fermions, the transformation makes strong correlation weaker, as demonstrated by the Hartree-Fock approximation to the transformed Hamiltonian. This result can be rationalized in terms of rank reduction of spin shift terms when transformed to fermions. Conversely, the mapping of fermions to qubits makes strong correlation stronger, complicating its solution when one uses qubit-based correlators. The presence of string operators poses challenges to the implementation of quantum chemistry methods on classical computers, but these can be dealt with using established techniques of low computational cost. Here, our proof of principle results for XXZ and J1-J2 Heisenberg (in 1D and 2D) indicate that the JW transformed fermionic Hamiltonian has reduced complexity in key regions of their phase diagrams, and provides a better starting point for addressing challenging spin problems.

The SAGEX review on scattering amplitudes Chapter 2: An invitation to color-kinematics duality and the double copy

Abstract Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born–Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerge at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: (1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and (2) a discussion of the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics.

Quarkyonic effective field theory, quark-nucleon duality, and ghosts

We present a field theoretical description of quarkyonic matter consisting of quark, nucleon, and ghost fields coupling to mesonic degrees of freedom. The ghosts are present to cancel overcounting of nucleon states that are Pauli blocked by the quark Fermi sea. Such a theory becomes an effective field theory of nucleons at low baryon density and as such will reproduce nucleonic matter phenomenology. Here, this theory can accommodate chiral symmetry restoration and the dynamical generation of a shell of nucleons at the Fermi surface. It is valid for finite temperature and density. In such a theory, quark-nucleon duality is accomplished by inclusion of ghost fields so that the nucleons extra degrees of freedom, that are beyond those of quarks, are compensated by the ghost fields.
