Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η jet | < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c and 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ in the range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c. The analysis extends the p T range of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powheg calculations with parton shower provided by PYTHIA8 as well as by JETSCAPE simulations.

First inclusive triple-differential measurement of the muon-antineutrino charged-current cross section using the NOvA Near Detector

We present the first measurement of the triple-differential muon antineutrino charged-current inclusive cross section, using the NOvA Near Detector and $12.5 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in the NuMI beam. This sample of muon antineutrino interactions is the largest ever published, with approximately 1 million selected muon antineutrino events. The triple-differential cross section is measured in the final-state kinetic energy, the scattering angle, and the available energy of the interaction. The measurement enables phase-space regions populated by differing neutrino reaction processes to be isolated and the transition regions between them to be defined. The results are compared with the predictions of the main event generators used in the neutrino community and we observe energy- and angle-dependent discrepancies across a broad range of energies and interaction types

Single-top-quark production in the t-channel at NNLO

We present a calculation of t-channel single-top-quark production and decay in the five-flavor scheme at NNLO. Our results resolve a disagreement between two previous calculations of this process that found a difference in the inclusive cross section at the level of the NNLO coefficient itself. We compare in detail with the previous calculations at the inclusive, differential and fiducial level including b-quark tagging at a fixed scale μ = m t . In addition, we advocate the use of double deep inelastic scattering (DDIS) scales ( μ 2 = Q 2 for the light-quark line and μ 2 = Q 2 + m t 2 for the heavy-quark line) that maximize perturbative stability and allow for robust scale uncertainties. All NNLO and NLOⓍNLO contributions for production and decay are included in the on-shell and vertex-function approximation. We present fiducial and differential results for a variety of observables used in Standard Model and Beyond Standard Model analyses, and find an important difference between the NLO and NNLO predictions of exclusive t + n-jet cross sections. Overall we find that NNLO corrections are crucial for a precise identification of the t-channel process.

Evidence of pair production of longitudinally polarised vector bosons and study of CP properties in ZZ → 4ℓ events with the ATLAS detector at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A study of the polarisation and CP properties in ZZ production is presented. The used data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The ZZ candidate events are reconstructed using two same-flavour opposite-charge electron or muon pairs. The production of two longitudinally polarised Z bosons is measured with a significance of 4.3 standard deviations, and its cross-section is measured in a fiducial phase space to be 2.45 ± 0.60 fb, consistent with the next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction. The inclusive differential cross-section as a function of a CP-sensitive angular observable is also measured. The results are used to constrain anomalous CP-odd neutral triple gauge couplings.

Spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^-$ in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V / c beam momenta measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of π - mesons produced in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V /c. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Measurement of charged-current $\nu_\mu$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ cross sections on hydrocarbon in a shallow inelastic scattering region

This MINERvA analysis is the first neutrino and antineutrino study of a shallow inelastic scattering region, which is the transition region between resonant production and deep inelastic scattering processes. This transition is explicitly included in this study by expanding the scope of shallow inelastic scattering to include not only the mainly lower-$Q^2$ nonresonant pion production but also the kinematic region where pion production off quarks within the nucleon becomes significant with $Q^2$ below the onset of the deep-inelastic scattering region defined in this analysis. To reduce the resonance background the kinematic region 1.5 $<$$W$$<$ 2 GeV/$c^2$ was chosen. In addition to the inclusive differential cross section measurements, to emphasize SIS interactions off quarks within the nucleon a sample with $Q^2$$\geq$ 1 GeV/$c^2$ was also analyzed. The measurements of one-dimensional cross sections at $\left\langle E_\nu \right\rangle \sim 6$ GeV on hydrocarbon of $Q^2$, Bjorken x and muon momentum variables are compared with modified predictions from the GENIE 2 neutrino generator as well as predictions of other neutrino simulators GiBUU, NEUT, NuWro and an alternative GENIE 3 version. Significant discrepancies both in shape and magnitude between measurements and neutrino simulator predictions of all variables have been observed.

Optimal return-to-launchsite abort trajectories for an HL-20 Personnel Launch System vehicle

The Personnel Launch System (PLS) being studied by NASA is a system to complement the Space Shuttle and provide alternative access to space. The PLS consists of a manned spacecraft launched by an expendable launch vehicle (ELV). A candidate for the manned spacecraft is the HL-20 lifting body. In the event of an ELV malfunction during the initial portion of the ascent trajectory, the HL-20 will separate from the rocket and perform an unpowered return-to-launchsite (RTLS) abort. This paper describes an investigation of the RTLS abort scenario using optimal control theory. The objective of the abort trajectory is to maximize final altitude at a point near the runway. The assumption is then made that there exists a control history to steer the vehicle to any final altitude lower than the final optimal altitude. With this selection of cost function, and with this assumption, the feasibility of an RTLS abort at different times along the ascent trajectory can be determined. The method of differential inclusions, which allows the determination of optimal states and eliminates the need for determining the optimal controls, is used to determine the optimal trajectories.

Optimal control theory determination of feasible return-to-launch-site aborts for the HL-20 Personnel Launch System vehicle

In the event of an ELV malfunction during the initial portion of the ascent trajectory, the HL-20 will separate from the rocket and perform an unpowered return to launch site (RTLS) abort. This work details an investigation, using optimal control theory, of the RTLS abort scenario. The objective of the optimization was to maximize final altitude. With final altitude as the cost function, the feasibility of an RTLS abort at different times during the ascent was determined. The method of differential inclusions was used to determine the optimal state trajectories, and the optimal controls were then calculated from the optimal states and state rates.

Multi-Differential Semi-Inclusive Charged-Current Muon Neutrino Cross Sections on Helium-4 in MINERvA and the Helium-to-CH Target Cross Section Ratio

A comprehensive international effort has been underway to elucidate the properties and behaviors of neutrinos. A major source of systematic uncertainties in studying neutrino-induced interactions comes from neutrino-nucleus cross-section models, highlighting the need for more precise statistical measurements. MINERvA, an on-axis neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was established to produce neutrino cross-section measurements with many different nuclei. The helium target is the lightest nucleus to be measured by MINERvA. Using the NuMI medium energy muon neutrino data set, we present preliminary results and summarize the extraction of the charged current (CC) muon neutrino - helium-4 semi-inclusive ($\nu_{\mu}$+$^{4}\textrm{He}$$\rightarrow$$\mu^{-}$+N$\pi$+M$\textit{p}$) multi-differential cross-section extraction as a function of transverse ($P_{T}$) and longitudinal ($P_{L}$) muon momentum with respect to the neutrino beamline. We define the final state topology as CC-N$\pi$M$\textit{p}$, with at least two reconstructed tracks: a muon and a combination of N protons and M pions, where $N + M > 0$. To probe the dependence on the size of the nucleus in neutrino-induced interaction phenomena we present a differential cross-section ratio of helium-4 to MINERvA's hydrocarbon target (\textrm{CH}) as a function of transverse muon momentum.

Measurements of Normalized Differential Cross Sections of Inclusive η Production in e + e − Annihilation at Energy from 2.0000 to 3.6710 GeV

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, the cross section of the inclusive process e + e − → η + X , normalized by the total cross section of e + e − → hadrons , is measured at eight center-of-mass energy points from 2.0000 to 3.6710 GeV. These are the first measurements with momentum dependence in this energy region. Our measurement shows a significant discrepancy compared to the existing fragmentation functions. To address this discrepancy, a new QCD analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order with hadron mass corrections and higher twist effects, which can explain both the established high-energy data and our measurements reasonably well. First Measurement of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Triple Differential Cross Section on Argon

The field of accelerator neutrino experiments is entering an era of precision oscillation measurements where the remaining unknown neutrino measurements will be determined. The upcoming DUNE and Hyper-K experiments aim to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and degree of Charge-Parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector, providing potential insight on the matter-antimatter imbalance observed in the universe. However, these experiments require highly accurate measurements, and neutrino cross section modeling uncertainties may limit their capabilities. Cross section measurements at current- generation experiments can aid the development of neutrino interaction models to reduce these uncertainties. This is especially true for measurements of neutrino energy, as it drives neutrino oscillations and is of key importance to oscillation experiments. The MicroBooNE experiment uses a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) to produce neutrino-argon cross sections as one of its physics goals. The MicroBooNE detector’s fully active volume, precision reconstruction, and calorimetry information are leveraged in the Wire-Cell analysis to produce a muon neutrino selection that is 92% pure while maintaining 68% efficiency. A reconstruction chain featuring a fully 3D charge reconstruction and a graph-based particle trajectory fit are used to produce accurate measurements of lepton kinematics as well as visible hadronic energy produced in a neutrino interaction. This thesis presents the first neutrino-argon triple-differential cross section measurement, targeting inclusive charged-current final states. Wiener SVD unfolding is used to produce a measurement over neutrino energy, muon momentum, and muon scattering angle. A series of constrained goodness of fit tests are used to demonstrate the validity of MicroBooNE’s model in describing the distribution of reconstructed kinematics seen in data to ensure the accuracy of unfolding. The validated unfolding to neutrino energy represents a step forward in the field of neutrino cross sections, and demonstrates the capabilities of the LArTPC detector.

Evidence for the charge asymmetry in $pp$ → $t\bar{t}$ production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive and differential measurements of the top–antitop ($t\bar{t}$) charge asymmetry ${A}_{C}^{t\bar{t}}$ and the leptonic asymmetry ${A}_{C}^{\ell\bar{\ell}}$ are presented in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement uses the complete Run 2 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 , combines data in the single-lepton and dilepton channels, and employs reconstruction techniques adapted to both the resolved and boosted topologies. A Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to correct for detector resolution and acceptance effects. The combined inclusive $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry is measured to be ${A}_{C}^{t\bar{t}}$ = 0.0068 ± 0.0015, which differs from zero by 4.7 standard deviations. Differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the $t\bar{t}$ system. Both the inclusive and differential measurements are found to be compatible with the Standard Model predictions, at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The measurements are interpreted in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory, placing competitive bounds on several Wilson coefficients.

Measurement of the total and differential cross-sections of $t\bar{t}$$W$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of inclusive and differential production cross-sections of a top-quark-top-antiquark pair in association with a W boson ($t\bar{t}$$W$) are presented. They are performed by targeting final states with two same-sign or three isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and are based on $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 , recorded from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive $t\bar{t}$$W$ production cross-section is measured to be 880 ± 80 fb, compared to a reference theoretical prediction of 745 ± 50 (scale) ± 13 (2-loop approx.) ± 19 (PDF, α s ) fb. Differential cross-section measurements characterise this process in detail for the first time. Several particle-level observables are compared with a variety of theoretical predictions, which generally agree well with the normalised differential cross-section results. Additionally, the relative charge asymmetry of $t\bar{t}$$W$ + and $t\bar{t}$$W$ – is measured inclusively to be $A$$^{rel}_{C}$ = 0.33 ± 0.05, in very good agreement with the theoretical prediction of 0.322 ± 0.003 (scale) ± 0.007 (PDF), as well as differentially.

Measurement of ZZ production cross-sections in the four-lepton final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

This paper reports cross-section measurements of ZZ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29 fb -1 . Events in the ZZ → 4ℓ(ℓ = e, μ) final states are selected and used to measure the inclusive and differential cross-sections in a fiducial region defined close to the analysis selections. The inclusive cross-section is further extrapolated to the total phase space with a requirement of 66 < m Z < 116 GeV for both Z bosons, yielding 16.8 ± 1.1 pb. The results are well described by the Standard Model predictions.

Triple Differential Muon Antineutrino Charge Current Inclusive Cross Section Measurement in NOvA

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator-based neutrino experiment based in the USA. For its physics goals, NOvA uses two functionally identical detectors. The Near Detector is situated at Fermilab, 1 km from the neutrino target, and the Far Detector is located at Ash River, MN, a distance of 810 km from the neutrino source. The ND sees the high intensity of the neutrino beam due to its close proximity to the neutrino target, giving us a unique opportunity to do high-precision neutrino cross-section measurements. In this talk, we present our latest results of the muon antineutrino charge current inclusive cross-section measurement in the NOvA ND. The new measurement is a triple differential cross section in antimuon kinematic phase-space and in the total energy of all observable final state hadrons. We also compare our data results to various neutrino generator predictions, for example, comparisons to GENIE, NuWro, GiBUU, and NEUT neutrino generators are presented.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb –1 . The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into $b\bar{b}$. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250–450, 450–650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4$^{+1.0}_{–0.9}$ and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3⁢(stat)$^{+1.8}_{–1.4}$(syst.) pb.
