Digital Engineering & Data Acquisition

This is an Intern Poster submission regarding my research in the digital engineering team. My task was to create a software adapter to communicate between a data acquisition system (LabVIEW) and a data warehouse (Deep Lynx) as described in the poster.

Identification and interpretation of patterns in rocket engine data

A prototype software system was constructed to detect anomalous Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) behavior in the early stages of fault development significantly earlier than the indication provided by either redline detection mechanism or human expert analysis. The major task of the research project is to analyze ground test data, to identify patterns associated with the anomalous engine behavior, and to develop a pattern identification and detection system on the basis of this analysis. A prototype expert system which was developed on both PC and Symbolics 3670 lisp machine for detecting anomalies in turbopump vibration data was checked with data from ground tests 902-473, 902-501, 902-519, and 904-097 of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. The neural networks method was also applied to supplement the statistical method utilized in the prototype system to investigate the feasibility in detecting anomalies in turbopump vibration of SSME. In most cases the anomalies detected by the expert system agree with those reported by NASA. On the neural networks approach, the results are given the successful detection rate higher than 95 percent to identify either normal or abnormal running condition based on the experimental data as well as numerical simulation.

Long term trending of engineering data for the Hubble Space Telescope

A major goal in spacecraft engineering analysis is the detection of component failures before the fact. Trending is the process of monitoring subsystem states to discern unusual behaviors. This involves reducing vast amounts of data about a component or subsystem into a form that helps humans discern underlying patterns and correlations. A long term trending system has been developed for the Hubble Space Telescope. Besides processing the data for 988 distinct telemetry measurements each day, it produces plots of 477 important parameters for the entire 24 hours. Daily updates to the trend files also produce 339 thirty day trend plots each month. The total system combines command procedures to control the execution of the C-based data processing program, user-written FORTRAN routines, and commercial off-the-shelf plotting software. This paper includes a discussion the performance of the trending system and of its limitations.

Telemetry Boards Interpret Rocket, Airplane Engine Data

For all the data gathered by the space shuttle while in orbit, NASA engineers are just as concerned about the information it generates on the ground. From the moment the shuttle s wheels touch the runway to the break of its electrical umbilical cord at 0.4 seconds before its next launch, sensors feed streams of data about the status of the vehicle and its various systems to Kennedy Space Center s shuttle crews. Even while the shuttle orbiter is refitted in Kennedy s orbiter processing facility, engineers constantly monitor everything from power levels to the testing of the mechanical arm in the orbiter s payload bay. On the launch pad and up until liftoff, the Launch Control Center, attached to the large Vehicle Assembly Building, screens all of the shuttle s vital data. (Once the shuttle clears its launch tower, this responsibility shifts to Mission Control at Johnson Space Center, with Kennedy in a backup role.) Ground systems for satellite launches also generate significant amounts of data. At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, across the Banana River from Kennedy s location on Merritt Island, Florida, NASA rockets carrying precious satellite payloads into space flood the Launch Vehicle Data Center with sensor information on temperature, speed, trajectory, and vibration. The remote measurement and transmission of systems data called telemetry is essential to ensuring the safe and successful launch of the Agency s space missions. When a launch is unsuccessful, as it was for this year s Orbiting Carbon Observatory satellite, telemetry data also provides valuable clues as to what went wrong and how to remedy any problems for future attempts. All of this information is streamed from sensors in the form of binary code: strings of ones and zeros. One small company has partnered with NASA to provide technology that renders raw telemetry data intelligible not only for Agency engineers, but also for those in the private sector.

Identification and interpretation of patterns in rocket engine data

The goal of our research is to analyze ground test data, to identify patterns associated with the anomalous engine behavior. On the basis of this analysis, it is the task of our project to develop a Pattern Identification and Detection System which detects anomalous engine behavior in the early stages of fault development significantly earlier than the indication provided by either redline detection mechanism or human expert analysis. Early detection of these anomalies is challenging because of the large amount of noise presence in the data. In the presence of this noise, early indication of anomalies becomes even more difficult to distinguish from fluctuations in normal steady state operation.

Implementing an integrated engineering data base system: A developer's experience and the application to IPAD

The software developed by the IPAD project, a new and very powerful tool for the implementation of integrated Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems in the aerospace engineering community, is discussed. The IPAD software is a tool and, as such, can be well applied or misapplied in any particular environment. The many benefits of an integrated CAD system are well documented, but there are few such systems in existence, especially in the mechanical engineering disciplines, and therefore little available experience to guide the implementor.

Comment on “Thermodynamic Models for the (HClO 4 + NaClO 4 ){aq} and (HBr + NaBr){aq} Systems at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa” Authored by Oakes, C. S., Ward, A. L., Chugunov, N. Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data , 68 , 2554–2562

Oakes et al. (2023) published a review article in this journal. In that paper, Oakes et al. (2023) developed thermodynamic models to describe electrolyte solutions for HClO 4 –NaClO 4 –H 2 O and HBr–NaBr–H 2 O systems, based on literature data. In their paper, previously published work from researchers in the field was criticized; some of it is ours. Here, in this brief Comment, we first comment on their models, and then we briefly provide a technical response to that criticism.

Improved biomass feedstock materials handling and feeding engineering data sets, design methods, and modeling/simulation tools

Forest Concepts led a project to develop a set of tools which enable feedstock handing equipment designers to better understand and model the flowability of bulk particulate biomass materials. The work products included improved flowability mathematical models, data sets used to populate the models, and two new laboratory devices – a biomass-scale true cubical triaxial tester and a biomass-scale gas pycnometer. This work was funded in part by the US Department of Energy under contact DE-EE0008254.
