Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study (OEPSS) data book. Volume 5: OEPSS final briefing for first year study

This study was initiated to identify operations problems and cost drivers for current propulsion systems and to identify technology and design approaches to increase the operational efficiency and reduce operations costs for future propulsion systems. To provide readily usable data for the Advanced Launch System (ALS) Program, the results of the Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study (OEPSS) were organized into a series of OEPSS Data Books. This volume contains the final briefing on the OEPSS first-year effort. This briefing was presented to MSFC as part of an effort to promote greater interaction between the design community and the launch site operator.

QS ATMS Calibration Data Book Government Version: Pre-Launch Version

The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) SN301 is an instrument onboard the QuickSounder Satellite System, QuickSounder mission (renamed QS). Throughout this document the mission may be referred to as QuickSounder or QS. The purpose of this document is to provide information needed to interpret and process QS ATMS science data. The contents of the data book incorporate results from pre-launch subsystem-level and instrument-level testing as well as post-launch testing performed during instrument commissioning. Major milestones include instrument thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing in May 2024 and observatory TVAC testing in 2026. QS launch will be no earlier than Feb. 15, 2027.

Shuttle data book: SRM fragment velocity model. Presented to the SRB Fragment Model Review Panel

This study was undertaken to determine the velocity of fragments generated by the range safety destruction (RSD) or random failure of a Space Transportation System (STS) Solid Rocket Motor (SRM). The specific requirement was to provide a fragment model for use in those Galileo and Ulysses RTG safety analyses concerned with possible fragment impact on the spacecraft radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGS). Good agreement was obtained between predictions and observations for fragment velocity, velocity distributions, azimuths, and rotation rates. Based on this agreement with the entire data base, the model was used to predict the probable fragment environments which would occur in the event of an STS-SRM RSD or randon failure at 10, 74, 84 and 110 seconds. The results of these predictions are the basis of the fragment environments presented in the Shuttle Data Book (NSTS-08116). The information presented here is in viewgraph form.

The International Space Station Evolution Data Book: An Overview and Status

The evolution and enhancement of the International Space Station (ISS) is currently being planned in conjunction with the on-orbit construction of the baseline configuration. Three principal areas have been identified that will contribute to the evolution of ISS: Pre-Planned Program Improvement (P3I), Utilization & Commercialization, and Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) missions. The ISS Evolution Strategy, under development by the Spacecraft and Sensors Branch of NASA Langley Research Center, seeks to coordinate the P3I technology development with Commercialization/Utilization activities and HEDS advanced mission accommodation to provide synergistic technology developments for all three areas. The focal point of this proposed strategy is the ISS Evolution Data Book (EDB), a tool for aiding the evolution and enhancement of ISS beyond Assembly Complete. This paper will discuss the strategy and provide an overview of the EDB, describing the contents of each section. It will also discuss potential applications of the EDB and present an example Design Reference Mission (DRM). The latest status of the EDB and the plans for completing and enhancing the book will also be summarized.

Interplanetary magnetic field data book

An interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) data set is presented that is uniform with respect to inclusion of cislunar IMF data only, and which has as complete time coverage as presently possible over a full solar cycle. Macroscale phenomena in the interplanetary medium (sector structure, heliolatitude variations, solar cycle variations, etc.) and other phenomena (e.g., ground level cosmic-ray events) for which knowledge of the IMF with hourly resolution is necessary, are discussed. Listings and plots of cislunar hourly averaged IMP parameters over the period November 27, 1963, to May 17, 1974, are presented along with discussion of the mutual consistency of the IMF data used herein. The magnetic tape from which the plots and listings were generated, which is available from the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), is also discussed.

Model aerodynamic test results for two variable cycle engine coannular exhaust systems at simulated takeoff and cruise conditions. Comprehensive data report. Volume 3: Graphical data book 1

A graphical presentation of the aerodynamic data acquired during coannular nozzle performance wind tunnel tests is given. The graphical data consist of plots of nozzle gross thrust coefficient, fan nozzle discharge coefficient, and primary nozzle discharge coefficient. Normalized model component static pressure distributions are presented as a function of primary total pressure, fan total pressure, and ambient static pressure for selected operating conditions. In addition, the supersonic cruise configuration data include plots of nozzle efficiency and secondary-to-fan total pressure pumping characteristics. Supersonic and subsonic cruise data are given.

Data book for 12.5-inch diameter SRB thermal model water flotation test: 14.7 psia, series P020

Data acquired from the initial series of tests conducted to determine how thermal conditions affect SRB (Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster) flotation are presented. Acceleration, pressure, and temperature data recorded from initial water impact to final flotation position using a 12.5-inch diameter thermal model of the SRB at ambient pressure are included. The model was 136.9 inches long and weighed 117.3 lbm. The tests indicated the following differences from ambient temperature tests: (1) significant negative static pressures can occur during penetration; (2) maximum penetration is increased; and (3) final flotation is in the spar buoy mode.

Data book for 12.5-inch diameter SRB thermal model water flotation test; 1.29 psia, series P022

Data acquired from tests conducted to determine how thermal conditions affect SRB (Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster) flotation at a scaled pressure of 1.29 psia are presented. Included are acceleration, pressure, and temperature data recorded from initial water impact to final flotation position using a 12.5-inch diameter thermal model of the SRB. Nineteen valid tests were conducted. These thermal tests indicated the following basic differences relative to the ambient temperature and pressure model tests: (1) more water was taken on board during penetration and (2) model flotation/sinking was temperature sensitive.

Interplanetary medium data book. Supplement 3: 1977-1985

The updating of the hourly resolution, near-Earth solar wind data compilation is discussed. Data plots and listings are then presented. In the text, the time shifting of ISEE 3 fine-scale magnetic field and and plasma data, using corotation delay, and the normalization of IMP-MIT and ISEE densities and temperatures to equivalent IMP-LANL values, are discussed in detail. The levels of arbitrariness in combining data sets, and of random differences between data sets, are elucidated.
