Logic-controlled solid-state switchgear for 270 volt dc.

A feasibility study to design and demonstrate solid-state switchgear composed of circuit breakers and a power transfer switch is described. The switchgear operates on a nominal 270 Vdc circuit and controls power to a load up to 15 A. One circuit breaker may be interconnected to a second to form a power transfer switch. Breaker or switch on-off and transfer functions can be remotely controlled. Automatic overload trip-out is provided through an ultimate current trip and an I squared t trip for transient overcurrents lower than the ultimate current trip level. A number of reclosures with variable time delay between trip-out and reclosure are programmed and controlled by integrated analog and COSMOS logic circuits. A commutation circuit that creates minimal transient disturbances to either source or load was developed to interrupt current flow through the main SCR switching element.-

Aging commuter aeroplanes: Fatigue evaluation and control methods

The risks associated with old aeroplanes arise in the main from the difficulty of obtaining support from the manufacturer and other skilled people, and from a general loss of reliability caused by wear and other deterioration. The loss of reliability is caused by two broad classes of problem. There are those problems which are self evident, and hazardous rather than catastrophic. These are the problem areas where characteristically there have been multiple overhauls, repairs, and replacements, and where aging really means the results of repair ineffectiveness that accumulates. The other class of problem is the insidious and potentially catastrophic class. It includes the progressive deterioration of items which are not maintained, and often cannot be maintained because the deterioration cannot be seen. It includes loss of physical properties in adhesives and other organic compounds, corrosion, and the response to repeated loads. This paper deals with a currently unnecessarily troublesome aspect of that response. The present working definition of "commuter aeroplanes" encompasses a wide range of aging types, from the Fairchild F27, through deHavilland Canada Twin Otters to the smaller twin engined Piper and Cessna models. It includes such types as the Lockheed 10, the Beech 18, and the Grumman Mallard. Although we must remain concerned about those types which have been certificated under a design standard or operational rule which embodies the elementary fail-safe concept and which have not been subjected to a subsequent structural audit, this paper is directed, in the first instance, towards types for which fatigue and damage tolerance evaluation was not required as a condition of certification. It will be seen, however, that the principles are robust enough for more general application.

Transformerless dc-Isolated Converter

Efficient voltage converter employs capacitive instead of transformer coupling to provide dc isolation. Offers buck/boost operation, minimal filtering, and low parts count, with possible application in photovoltaic power inverters, power supplies and battery charges. In photovoltaic inverter circuit with transformerless converter, Q2, Q3, Q4, and Q5 form line-commutated inverter. Switching losses and stresses nil because switching performed when current is zero.

Feasibility of an onboard wake vortex avoidance system

It was determined that an onboard vortex wake detection system using existing, proven instrumentation is technically feasible. This system might be incorporated into existing onboard systems such as a wind shear detection system, and might provide the pilot with the location of a vortex wake, as well as an evasive maneuver so that the landing separations may be reduced. It is suggested that this system might be introduced into our nation's commuter aircraft fleet and major air carrier fleet and permit a reduction of current landing separation standards, thereby reducing takeoff and departure delays.

Implementation of Field-Oriented Control in Joint Actuator Electronics for Satellite-Servicing Robotics

NASA’s OSAM-1 (On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing 1) is a robotic spacecraft designed to extend the life of a satellite. Launching in 2026, the OSAM-1 servicer will use a robotic arm to grasp, refuel, and relocate Landsat 7. In order to accomplish the various servicing operations, including the critical auto-grapple capturing operation, the robot arm uses active compliance and visual servo control loops. These sophisticated control algorithms are enabled by the high performance Joint Control Boards (JCBs). At the core of the robot arm control architecture, the JCBs employ field-oriented control (FOC) to accurately commutate and efficiently control joint actuator torque. FOC offers numerous benefits over other current control methods, allowing the JCBs to achieve the high bandwidth and performance required by the outer control loops. As an added benefit, a torque feed-forward term allows the FOC loop to simulate microgravity actuator performance during ground testing. In this paper, a FOC implementation for space robotics applications and an end-to-end actuator calibration process are discussed.

Human Factors Research Considerations for Terminal Area Urban Air Mobility Operations

In this presentation, we discuss the human factors research challenges from introducing greater levels of automation in a future air transportation concept called Urban Air Mobility (UAM). UAM is an air transportation concept that aims to provide air transportation services to the daily commuter, as well as emergency response and package delivery. The principal innovation over current day large air transport system is the greater distribution of important safety functions to automated and human agents; these functions include air traffic management, traditionally an air traffic controller responsibility. A central aspect of UAM is the development of an automated air traffic manager, whose primary responsibility is to approve airspace access for vehicle operators. Vehicle operator roles may include onboard and remote pilots, as well as a human manager who will supervise an entire fleet. Alternatively, both fleet manager and vehicle operators can be merged into a single role – a feasible option if UAM aircraft are autonomous. In lieu of tower controllers, vertiport managers, with the assistance of automation, will manage arrival and departure schedules between vertiports, as well as supervise surface operations. Our approach here will be to introduce use cases currently being developed by NASA, and then provide preliminary definitions for each of the roles introduced above and how coordination between them can be configured to support the operations within the use cases described. Subsequently, we review the tools and interfaces being developed to support the various roles. To conclude, we present current human factors work related to defining the roles above and suggest future work to advance the UAM concept.

Future regional transport aircraft market, constraints, and technology stimuli

This report provides updated information on the current market and operating environment and identifies interlinking technical possibilities for competitive future commuter-type transport aircraft. The conclusions on the market and operating environment indicate that the regional airlines are moving toward more modern and effective fleets with greater passenger capacity and comfort, reduced noise levels, increased speed, and longer range. This direction leads to a nearly 'seamless' service and continued code-sharing agreements with the major carriers. Whereas the benefits from individual technologies may be small, the overall integration in existing and new aircraft designs can produce improvements in direct operating cost and competitiveness. Production costs are identified as being equally important as pure technical advances.

Logic-controlled solid state switchgear for 270 volts dc

A feasibility study to design and demonstrate solid state switchgear in the form of circuit breakers and a power transfer switch is described. The switchgear operates on a nominal 270 V dc circuit and controls power to a load of up to 15 amperes. One circuit breaker may be interconnected to a second breaker to form a power transfer switch. Manufacturing tolerances for natural laminar flow airframe surfaces

Published aircraft surface waviness and boundary layer transition measurements imply that currently achievable low levels of surface waviness are compatible with the natural laminar flow (NLF) requirements of business and commuter aircraft, in the cases of both metallic and composite material airframes. The primary challenge to the manufacture of NLF-compatible surfaces is two-dimensional roughness in the form of steps and gaps at structural joints. Attention is presently given to recent NASA investigations of manufacturing tolerance requirements for NLF surfaces, including flight experiment results.

Commutated automatic gain control system

The commutated automatic gain control (AGC) system was designed and built for the prototype Loran-C receiver is discussed. The current version of the prototype receiver, the Mini L-80, was tested initially in 1980. The receiver uses a super jolt microcomputer to control a memory aided phase loop (MAPLL). The microcomputer also controls the input/output, latitude/longitude conversion, and the recently added AGC system. The AGC control adjusts the level of each station signal, such that the early portion of each envelope rise is about at the same amplitude in the receiver envelope detector.

Preliminary control law and hardware designs for a ride quality augmentation system for commuter aircraft. Phase 2

The continued investigation of the design of Ride Quality Augmentation Systems (RQAS) for commuter aircraft is described. The purpose of these RQAS is the reduction of the vertical and lateral acceleration response of the aircraft due to atmospheric turbulence by the application of active control. The current investigations include the refinement of the sample data feedback control laws based on the control-rate-weighting and output-weighting optimal control design techniqes. These control designs were evaluated using aircraft time simulations driven by Dryden spectra turbulence. Fixed gain controllers were tested throughout the aircrft operating envelope. The preliminary design of the hardware modifications necessary to implement and test the RQAS on a commuter aircraft is included. These include a separate surface elevator and the flap modifications to provide both direct lift and roll control. A preliminary failure mode investigation was made for the proposed configuration. The results indicate that vertical acceleration reductions of 45% and lateral reductions of more than 50% are possible. A fixed gain controller appears to be feasible with only minor response degradation.

Traveling-wave synchronous coil gun

An outline is presented of the coilgun concept, excitation, switching, brush commutation, power supply, and performance. It is shown that a traveling-wave synchronous coilgun permits independent adjustment of the magnetic field and armature current for high velocity at low armature mass fraction. Magnetic field energy is transferred from the rear of the wave to the front without passing through the power supply. Elaborate switching is required.

Direct current ballast circuit for metal halide lamp

A direct current ballast circuit for a two electrode metal halide lamp is described. Said direct current ballast circuit includes a low voltage DC input and a high frequency power amplifier and power transformer for developing a high voltage output. The output voltage is rectified by diodes and filtered by inductor and capacitor to provide a regulated DC output through commutating diodes to one terminal of the lamp at the output terminal. A feedback path from the output of the filter capacitor through the bias resistor to power the high frequency circuit which includes the power amplifier and the power transformer for sustaining circuit operations during low voltage transients on the input DC supply is described. A current sensor connected to the output of the lamp through terminal for stabilizing lamp current following breakdown of the lamp is described.

Concepts for reference frames in geodesy and geodynamics - The reference directions

The paper discusses a study that establishes a reference frame, moving with the earth (in some average sense), in which the geometric and dynamical behavior of the earth can be monitored, and whose motion with respect to inertial space can also be determined. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the reference directions at an observation point on the earth surface, are defined by fundamental vectors for both space and time. The interrelationships between this space- and time-variant angular parameter are illustrated in a commutative diagram and tower of triads. Although the model tower is also space- and time-variant, its variations are described by adopted parameters using our current knowledge of the earth.
