CubeSat Laser Infrared CrosslinK

The CubeSat Laser Infrared CrosslinK (CLICK) mission will demonstrate technology to advance the state of the art in communications between small spacecraft as well as the capability to gauge their relative distance and location. CLICK is comprised of two sequential missions. The first mission, CLICK A, is a risk reduction mission that will test out elements of the optical (laser) communications with a single 3-unit (3U) spacecraft. The key objective of this risk reduction testing is to demonstrate the fine steering mirror control system's high precision pointing performance which enables the use of a lower power laser in CLICK B/C. The goal of CLICK B/C, the second mission, is to demonstrate full-duplex (send and receive) optical communication crosslink between two 3U small spacecraft, in low-Earth-orbit, at distances between 15 and 360 miles (25 - 580 kilometres) apart at data rates greater than 20 Mbps.

CubeSat Laser Infrared CrosslinK (CLICK): A Demonstration of Flexible High-Data-Rate, Low-Cost, Full-Duplex CubeSat Optical Communications and Ranging Capability

The CubeSat Laser Infrared CrosslinK (CLICK) mission will demonstrate technology to advance the state of the art in communications between small spacecraft as well as the capability to gauge their relative distance and location. CLICK is comprised of two sequential missions. The goal of CLICK B/C (i.e. CLICK B and CLICK C), the second mission shown in this animation, is to demonstrate full-duplex (send and receive) optical communication crosslink between two 3U (3-Unit CubeSats) small spacecraft, in low-Earth-orbit, at distances between 15 and 360 miles (25 to 580 kilometers) apart at data rates greater than 20 megabits per second. This second mission will also demonstrate precision ranging capability between the spacecraft that provides the ability to measure the distance and location of each with a range resolution to within approximately 20 inches (0.5 meters).

Dual Anion-Cation Crosslinked Poly(ionic liquid) Composite Membranes for Enhanced CO2 Separation

Herein, we propose a strategy of developing novel dual anionic-cationic crosslinked poly(IL)-IL composite membranes via a photopolymerization method for enhanced CO2 separations. These are the first examples of dually photopolymerized anionic-cationic poly(IL)-IL composite systems, in which the backbones of poly(IL)s feature both pendant anions and cations without any mobile counterions unlike poly(IL) reported so far in the literature. A new type of dual photopolymerizable anionic-cationic IL (DIL) monomer having methacrylate functional group tethered with highly delocalized sulfonimide anion (–SO2–N(-)–SO2–C7H7) and a vinylimidazolium counterion ([C4(vim)](+)) was successfully synthesized and photopolymerized with four distinct amounts of free IL with a structurally analogous cation ([C4(mim)][Tf2N]) and 20 wt% PEGDA crosslinker, offering novel composite matrices. Further, the structure-property relationships as well as gas separation behaviors of the four newly developed dual anioniccationic poly(IL)-IL composite membranes were extensively characterized by FT-IR, DSC, and XRD. All of the newly developed dual anionic-cationic poly(IL)-IL composite membranes displayed outstanding permselectivites for CO2/CH4, CO2/N2, and CO2/H2 gas pairs together with reasonable CO2 permeabilities. As a result, all the dual anionic-cationic poly(IL)-IL composite membranes outperformed the common poly(IL)-IL systems in the upper bound limit plots with best CO2 permeability of 40 barrer and CO2/CH4 permselectivity of 85. This study may pave a new platform to explore countless potential poly(IL)-IL composites for selective separation of CO2 from flue gas, natural gas, and syngas streams.

Effect degree of crosslinking on the tearing energy

Much recent work has been carried out on the tear behavior of elastomers, both filled and unfilled. By use of a criterion for tearing involving the concept of the tearing energy, the effects of variables such as test temperature, test rate, specimen geometry, and chemical nature of the elastomer have been investigated. The one variable which has not yet been studied is the specific effect of changes in the degree of crosslinking on tear behavior. By use of data published in the literature on the smooth tear behavior of unfilled vulcanizates, it is shown that these data can all be superposed onto a common response curve when the proper normalizations are applied.

Effects of tetraamine crosslinking agents on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide composites

The effects were investigated of partial substitution of tetraamine crosslinking agents for diamine reactants on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide resins and graphite fiber-reinforced composites. The effect of tetraamine content on isothermal weight loss, glass transition, and softening temperatures of neat resin samples is discussed. Composites were fabricated using PMR methodology. Monomeric solution of various stoichiometric ratios was used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. The mechanical property retention characteristics of the composites at 316 C (600 F) are described.

Prediction of crosslink density of solid propellant binders

A quantitative theory is outlined which allows calculation of crosslink density of solid propellant binders from a small number of predetermined parameters such as the binder composition, the functionality distributions of the ingredients, and the extent of the curing reaction. The parameter which is partly dependent on process conditions is the extent of reaction. The proposed theoretical model is verified by independent measurement of effective chain concentration and sol and gel fractions in simple compositions prepared from model compounds. The model is shown to correlate tensile data with composition in the case of urethane-cured polyether and certain solid propellants. A formula for the branching coefficient is provided according to which if one knows the functionality distributions of the ingredients and the corresponding equivalent weights and can measure or predict the extent of reaction, he can calculate the branching coefficient of such a system for any desired composition.

Selective permeability of PVA membranes. I - Radiation-crosslinked membranes

The water and salt transport properties of ionizing radiation crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were investigated. The studied membranes showed high permeabilities and low selectivities for both water and salt. The results were found to be in accord with a modified solution-diffusion model for transport across the membranes, in which pressure-dependent permeability coefficients are employed.

Process for crosslinking and extending conjugated diene-containing polymers

A process using a Diels-Alder reaction which increases the molecular weight and/or crosslinks polymers by reacting the polymers with bisunsaturated dienophiles is developed. The polymer comprises at least 75% by weight based on the reaction product, has a molecular weight of at least 5000 and a plurality of conjugated 1,3-diene systems incorporated into the molecular structure. A dienophile reaction with the conjugated 1,3-diene of the polymer is at least 1% by weight based on the reaction product. Examples of the polymer include polyesters, polyamides, polyethers, polysulfones and copolymers. The bisunsaturated dienophiles may include bis-maleimides, bis maleic and bis tumaric esters and amides. This method for expanding the molecular weight chains of the polymers, preferable thermoplastics, is advantageous for processing or fabricating thermoplastics. A low molecular weight thermoplastic is converted to a high molecular weight plastic having improved strength and toughness for use in the completed end use article.

Degradation and crosslinking of perfluoroalkyl polyethers under X-ray irradiation in ultrahigh vacuum

Degradation of three types of commercially available perfluoroalkyl polyethers (PFPE)-Demnum S200, Fomblin Z25, and Krytox 16256-by X-ray irradiation was studied by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and a mass spectrometer under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. The carbons in the polymers were characterized by chemical shifts of Cls binding energies. Gaseous products containing COF2 and low-molecular-weight fluorocarbons were formed. From Fomblin Z25, which has acetal linkages (-OCF2O-), a large quantity of COF2 gas was evolved. Liquid products became tacky after a long irradiation time, and some did not dissolve in Freon. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that molecular weight distribution became broader and that higher molecular weight polymers were formed from Demnum and Krytox. We concluded from these results that degradation and cross-linking took place simultaneously. Demnum crosslinked more easily than the other fluids. The time dependence of both XPS spectra of Cls and mass spectra showed that C-O-bonded carbons in PFPE'S were removed faster than other carbons. There was no substrate effect on the degradation reaction because the first-order rate constants calculated from the change of gaseous products were similar when stainless steel (440C) and gold-coated surfaces were used. Metal fluorides were formed on stainless steel during the reaction. A mechanism for the degradation of PFPE'S is discussed on the basis of their molecular structures.

Deletion of Brca2 exon 27 causes hypersensitivity to DNA crosslinks, chromosomal instability, and reduced life span in mice

The Brca2 tumor-suppressor gene contributes to genomic stability, at least in part by a role in homologous recombinational repair. BRCA2 protein is presumed to function in homologous recombination through interactions with RAD51. Both exons 11 and 27 of Brca2 code for domains that interact with RAD51; exon 11 encodes eight BRC motifs, whereas exon 27 encodes a single, distinct interaction domain. Deletion of all RAD51-interacting domains causes embryonic lethality in mice. A less severe phenotype is seen with BRAC2 truncations that preserve some, but not all, of the BRC motifs. These mice can survive beyond weaning, but are runted and infertile, and die very young from cancer. Cells from such mice show hypersensitivity to some genotoxic agents and chromosomal instability. Here, we have analyzed mice and cells with a deletion of only the RAD51-interacting region encoded by exon 27. Mice homozygous for this mutation (called brca2(lex1)) have a shorter life span than that of control littermates, possibly because of early onsets of cancer and sepsis. No other phenotype was observed in these animals; therefore, the brca2(lex1) mutation is less severe than truncations that delete some BRC motifs. However, at the cellular level, the brca2(lex1) mutation causes reduced viability, hypersensitivity to the DNA interstrand crosslinking agent mitomycin C, and gross chromosomal instability, much like more severe truncations. Thus, the extreme carboxy-terminal region encoded by exon 27 is important for BRCA2 function, probably because it is required for a fully functional interaction between BRCA2 and RAD51.
