Synthesis of Bio-Based Repairable Polyimines with Tailored Properties by Lignin Fractionation

Developing sustainable polymers with low-value lignin remains a challenge. Herein, lignin-containing repairable polyimines were synthesized with tailored properties using lignin fractionation. First, softwood Kraft lignin is fractionated into a more homogeneous fraction with a lower molecular weight and a higher OH content. Next, Kraft lignin and its fraction are esterified by levulinic acid to introduce active ketone groups and subsequently condensed with oleylamine (OAm) and bis(3-aminopropyl)-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via a catalyst-free Schiff-base reaction to form grafted lignin-OAm copolymers and cross-linked lignin-PDMS polymer networks (MKL-P and MFL-P), respectively. Results show that lignin-OAm polyimines can be self-repaired and hot reprocessed under pressure, while lignin-PDMS polyimines can be repaired with the assistance of a healing agent, heat, and pressure. Dynamic mechanical analyses demonstrate that the stress–relaxation behaviors of the polyimines follow the Arrhenius law under thermal-stress activation, indicating the occurrence of transimination. Moreover, compared with Kraft lignin, the lignin fraction ameliorates the grafting density of ketones and enhances the cross-linking density of lignin-PDMS polyimine networks. The higher cross-linking density of MFL-P leads to superior stress–relaxation activation energy, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and light-shielding ability but inferior repairability and translucency. Finally, this work provides insights into the polymerization of lignin-based polymer networks and the potential application of lignin-PDMS polyimines for repairable, translucent, anti-UV, and hydrophobic coatings.

Ionic complexation of endblock-sulfonated thermoplastic elastomers and their physical gels for improved thermomechanical performance

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) composed of nonpolar triblock copolymers constitute a broadly important class of (re)processable network-forming macromolecules employed in ubiquitous commercial applications. Physical gelation of these materials in the presence of a low-volatility oil that is midblock-selective yields tunably soft TPE gels (TPEGs) that are suitable for emergent technologies ranging from electroactive, phase-change and shape-memory responsive media to patternable soft substrates for flexible electronics and microfluidics. Many of the high-volume TPEs used for these purposes possess styrenic endblocks that are inherently limited by a relatively low glass transition temperature. To mitigate this shortcoming, we sulfonate and subsequently complex (and physically crosslink) the endblocks with trivalent Al3+ ions. Doing so reduces the effective hydrophilicity of the sulfonated endblocks, as evidenced by water uptake measurements, while concurrently enhancing the thermomechanical stability of the corresponding TPEGs. Chemical modification results, as well as morphological and property development, are investigated as functions of the degree of sulfonation, complexation and TPEG composition. Nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer dual domain organogels

Loaded polymer gels are prevalent materials in the controlled release community and, fairly recently, have been formulated to include nanocarrier domains such as micelles and vesicles. One mechanism used to establish the solid-like characteristic of gels is block copolymer self-assembly, which can result in a system-spanning, physically-crosslinked network. Additionally, the combination of nanocarrier and crosslink domain presence offers gels with a rich nanoscale phase space capable of intricate macroscopic property tuning. The current manuscript provides an overview of nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer organogels wherein nanocarriers are reverse micelles formed by sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT), the block copolymer is a styrenic ABA triblock copolymer, and the gel solvent is aliphatic mineral oil. This introductory overview starts by identifying the envelope in ternary phase space wherein nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer organogels form (2-49 wt% triblock copolymer and 8x10 -3 -1 wt% AOT). Next, a detailed nanostructural description of gels varying in AOT and triblock copolymer concentration is presented. The manuscript concludes with demonstration of AOT reverse micelle release and gel uniaxial tensile response for gels containing 0-1 wt% AOT and 5-40 wt% styrenic triblock copolymer.

Effect of Fatty Acid Polyunsaturation on Synthesis and Properties of Emulsion Polymers Based on Plant Oil-Based Acrylic Monomers

This study demonstrated that polymerization behavior of plant oil-based acrylic monomers (POBMs) synthesized in one-step transesterification reaction from naturally rich in oleic acid olive, canola, and high-oleic soybean oils is associated with a varying mass fraction of polyunsaturated fatty acid fragments (linoleic (C18:2) and linolenic (C18:3) acid esters) in plant oil. Using miniemulsion polymerization, a range of stable copolymer latexes was synthesized from 60 wt.% of each POBM and styrene to determine the impact of POBM chemical composition (polyunsaturation) on thermal and mechanical properties of the resulted polymeric materials. The unique composition of each plant oil serves as an experimental tool to determine the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acid fragments on POBM polymerization behavior and thermomechanical properties of crosslinked films made from POBM-based latexes. The obtained results show that increasing polyunsaturation in the copolymers results in an enhanced crosslink density of the latex polymer network which essentially impacts the mechanical properties of the films (both Young’s modulus and toughness). Maximum toughness was observed for crosslinked latex films made from 50 wt.% of each POBM in the monomer feed.

Predicting the viscoplastic response of a crystallizing fluoropolymer using transient network theory

We employ a molecular theory of dynamic polymer networks to describe the viscoplastic response of rubbery FK-800, a thermoplastic copolymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride, over a broad range of thermal histories. The kinetics of crystallization at different annealing temperatures was modeled using a modified Avrami equation, whose parameters were found to evolve through simple relationships over the full temperature range of the rubbery state. By fitting experimental compression data, we discovered predictable trends for the physical parameters in our mechanical model over its full range of crystallinities (up to ≈20%) and provided insights based on molecular-level physics to justify them. Using this, an end-to-end model was developed to predict the yielding and post-yield behavior of rubbery FK-800 for arbitrary thermal histories. The model successfully predicted the highly nonlinear evolution of characteristic mechanical signatures (stiffness, yield point, post-yield drop) throughout the crystallization process. A statistical analysis of variance test was employed to determine that the measured variations in the mechanical behavior of rubbery FK-800 are primarily dictated by its fractional crystallinity, regardless of its exact thermal history.

Mechanically robust hydrophobized double network hydrogels and their fundamental salt transport properties

Abstract Water swollen polymer networks are attractive for applications ranging from tissue regeneration to water purification. For water purification, charged polymers provide excellent ion separation properties. However, many ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are brittle, necessitating the use of thick support materials that ultimately decrease throughput. To this end, novel double network hydrogels (DNHs) with variable water content are prepared and characterized in terms of mechanical and ion transport properties to evaluate their potential utility as tough membrane materials. The first network contains fixed anionic charges, while the other is comprised of a copolymer with varied ratios of hydrophobic ethyl acrylate (EA) and hydrophilic dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) repeat units. Characterization of freestanding DNH films reveals a reduction in water content from 88 to 53 wt% and a simultaneous increase in ultimate stress and strain by ~3.5× and ~4.5×, respectively, for 95%/5% EA/DMA, relative to 100% DMA. Fundamental salt transport properties relevant to water purification, including permeability, solubility, and diffusivity, are measured and systematically compared with conventional membrane materials to inform the development of DNHs for membrane applications. The ability to simultaneously reduce water content and increase mechanical integrity highlights the potential of DNHs as a synthetic platform for future membrane applications.

All-organic self-separating three-dimensionally nanoarchitected electrochemical energy storage devices

This work realizes a three-dimensionally (3D) nanoarchitected, all organic, "self-separating" lithium-ion electrochemical energy storage (EES) device that is cycled as a solid-state full cell. The device is enabled by a monolithic carbon anode with a co-continuous pore network, derived from the structure direction of resols by an ultra-large molar mass block copolymer (BCP), poly(styrene-block-2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (SA). Electropolymerization of a single-phase conductive and redox-active material, poly((2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-2-yl)methyl 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2-carboxylate) (PAQEDOT), into the pore space provides the cathode of the cell. The device is electronically contacted to the relevant electrode network enabled by the co-continuous nature of each electrode. Electrochemical processing via cycling against external lithium in an electrolyte generates a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) as a separator and lithiates the cell electrodes, after which the EES device is cycled in the solid state. While the full cell does not demonstrate high cyclability, the best full cell demonstrates a discharge capacity of 267 milliamp hours per gram (mAh/g). This work marks, to the best of knowledge of the authors, the first example of an all-organic materials derived 3D nanoarchitected EES device, as well as the first design of "self-separating" cell fabrication. Furthermore, generalization of the design to another co-continuous carbon form factor is demonstrated.

Morphological Studies of Solution-Crystallized Thermoplastic Elastomers with Polyethylene Endblocks and a Random-Copolymer Midblock

Styrenic thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) in the form of triblock copolymers possessing glassy endblocks and a rubbery midblock account for the largest global market of TPEs worldwide, and typically rely on microphase separation of the endblocks and the subsequent formation of rigid microdomains to ensure satisfactory network stabilization. In this work, the morphological characteristics of a relatively new family of crystallizable TPEs that instead consist of polyethylene endblocks and a random-copolymer midblock composed of styrene and (ethylene-co-butylene) moieties are investigated. Copolymer solutions prepared at logarithmic concentrations in a slightly endblock-selective solvent are subjected to crystallization under different time and temperature conditions to ascertain if copolymer self-assembly is directed by endblock crystallization or vice versa. According to transmission electron microscopy, semicrystalline aggregates develop at the lowest solution concentration examined (0.01 wt%), and the size and population of crystals, which dominate the copolymer morphologies, are observed to increase with increasing aging time. Real-space results are correlated with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering to elucidate the concurrent roles of endblock crystallization and self-assembly of these unique TPEs in solution.

Bioplastic design using multitask deep neural networks

Abstract Non-degradable plastic waste jeopardizes our environment, yet our modern lifestyle and current technologies are impossible to sustain without plastics. Bio-synthesized and biodegradable alternatives such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have the potential to replace large portions of the world’s plastic supply with cradle-to-cradle materials, but their chemical complexity and diversity limit traditional resource-intensive experimentation. Here, we develop multitask deep neural network property predictors using available experimental data for a diverse set of nearly 23,000 homo- and copolymer chemistries. Using the predictors, we identify 14 PHA-based bioplastics from a search space of almost 1.4 million candidates which could serve as potential replacements for seven petroleum-based commodity plastics that account for 75% of the world’s yearly plastic production. We also discuss possible synthesis routes for the identified promising materials.

Soft, malleable double diamond twin

A twin boundary (TB) is a common low energy planar defect in crystals including those with the atomic diamond structure (C, Si, Ge, etc.). We study twins in a self-assembled soft matter block copolymer (BCP) supramolecular crystal having the double diamond (DD) structure, consisting of two translationally shifted, interpenetrating diamond networks of the minority polydimethyl siloxane block embedded in a polystyrene block matrix. The coherent, low energy, mirror-symmetric double tubular network twin has one minority block network with its nodes offset from the (222) TB plane, while nodes of the second network lie in the plane of the boundary. The offset network, although at a scale about a factor of 10 3 larger, has precisely the same geometry and symmetry as a (111) twin in atomic single diamond where the tetrahedral units spanning the TB retain nearly the same strut (bond) lengths and strut (bond) angles as in the normal unit cell. In DD, the second network undergoes a dramatic restructuring—the tetrahedral nodes transform into two new types of mirror-symmetric nodes (pentahedral and trihedral) which alternate and link to form a hexagonal mesh in the plane of the TB. The collective reorganization of the supramolecular packing highlights the hierarchical structure of ordered BCP phases and emphasizes the remarkable malleability of soft matter.

Supramolecular Arene‐Perfluoroarene Assembly Enhances Photoiniferter Polymerization Kinetics

Ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW, >106 Da) polymers have unique thermomechanical properties due to their large number of physical entanglements. Producing UHMW styrenic polymers is challenging because of their prohibitively slow homopolymerization kinetics. In this report, we show that alternating photoiniferter copolymerization between methoxy-functionalized styrenic monomers and pentafluorostyrene can circumvent this limitation under conditions where arene–perfluoroarene (AP) interactions contribute to favorable monomer association and accelerate copolymerization. Increasing methoxy substitution on the styrene arene ring leads to pronounced rate enhancements that correlate with electronic complementarity between the styrenic comonomers. Density functional theory calculations reveal increasingly favorable AP interaction energies across the series, consistent with monomer association contributing to faster propagation. The result is up to 2000% enhancement in propagation rate in copolymerizations compared to styrene homopolymerization. Despite these rate enhancements, the resulting materials retain broadly similar glass-transition temperatures and network-like thermomechanical behavior, with only modest softening across the series. Here, we then leverage the approach to produce UHMW trialkoxystyrene copolymers bearing sterically encumbered pendants, which are ultrasoft (Young's modulus of 8 kPa) and highly extensible (560%). These results establish that designed supramolecular association between styrenics is a powerful tool for controlling reactivity in radical polymerization and generating otherwise difficult-to-obtain materials.

Exceptionally Fast Ion Diffusion in Block Copolymer-Based Porous Carbon Fibers

Confined ionic liquids in hydrophilic porous media have disrupted lattices and can be divided into two layers: An immobile ion layer adheres to the pore surfaces, and an inner layer exhibits faster mobility than the bulk. In this work, we report the first study of ionic liquids confined in block copolymer-based porous carbon fibers (PCFs) synthesized from polyacrylonitrile-block-polymethyl methacrylate (PAN-b-PMMA). The PCFs contain a network of unimodal mesopores of 13.6 nm in diameter and contain more hydrophilic surface functional groups than previously studied porous carbon. Elastic neutron scattering shows no freezing point for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM]BF 4 ) confined in PCFs down to 20 K. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is used to measure the diffusion of [BMIM]BF 4 confined in PCFs, which, surprisingly, is 7-fold faster than in the bulk. The unprecedentedly high ion diffusion remarks that PCFs hold exceptional potential for use in electrochemical catalysis, energy conversion, and storage.

Morphology and properties of amine terminated poly(arylene ether ketone) and poly(arylene ether sulfone) modified epoxy resin systems

Epoxy resin networks cured with DDS were modified by incorporating tough ductile thermoplastics such as the amine terminated polyether sulfones and amine terminated polyether ketones. Both linear copolymers were able to significantly improve the fracture toughness values at the 15 and 30 weight percent concentrations examined. These improvements in fracture toughness were achieved without any significant change in the flexural modulus.

Controlling Amphiphilic Polymer Folding beyond the Primary Structure with Protein-Mimetic Di(Phenylalanine)

While methods for polymer synthesis have proliferated, their functionality pales in comparison to natural biopolymers–strategies are limited for building the intricate network of noncovalent interactions necessary to elicit complex, protein-like functions. Using a bioinspired di(phenylalanine) acrylamide (FF) monomer, we explored the impact of various noncovalent interactions in generating ordered assembled structures. Amphiphilic copolymers were synthesized that exhibit β-sheet-like local structure upon collapsing into single-chain assemblies in aqueous environments. Here, the systematic analysis of a series of amphiphilic copolymers illustrated that the global collapse is primarily driven by hydrophobic forces. Hydrogen-bonding and aromatic interactions stabilize local structure, as β-sheet-like interactions were identified via circular dichroism and thioflavin T fluorescence. Similar analysis of phenylalanine (F) and alanine-phenylalanine acrylamide (AF) copolymers found that distancing the aromatic residue from the polymer backbone is sufficient to induce β-sheet-like local structure akin to the FF copolymers; however, the interactions between AF subunits are less stable than those formed by FF. Further, hydrogen-bond donating hydrophilic monomers disrupt internal structure formed by FF within collapsed assemblies. Collectively, these results illuminate design principles for the facile incorporation of multiple facets of protein-mimetic, higher-order structure within folded synthetic polymers.
