Satellite interferometric measurements of auroral kilometric radiation

The first satellite interferometric measurements of auroral kilometric radiation were performed by cross-correlating the waveforms detected by the ISEE 1 and ISEE 2 spacecraft. High correlations were found for all projected baselines, with little or no tendency to decrease even for the longest baselines. For incoherent radiation, the correlation as a function of the baseline is the Fourier transform of the source brightness distribution, implying an average source region diameter for all of the bursts analyzed of less than about 10 km. For such small source diameters, the required growth rates are too large to be explained by existing incoherent theories, strongly indicating that the radiation must be coherent. For coherent radiation, an upper limit to the source region diameter can be inferred instead from the angular width of the radiation pattern. The angular width of the radiation pattern must be at least 2.5 deg, implying that the diameter of the source must be less than about 20 km.

Recent Developments in the Analysis of Couple Oscillator Arrays

This presentation considers linear arrays of coupled oscillators. Our purpose in coupling oscillators together is to achieve high radiated power through the spatial power combining which results when the oscillators are injection locked to each other. York, et. al. have shown that, left to themselves, the ensemble of injection locked oscillators oscillate at the average of the tuning frequencies of all the oscillators. Coupling these arrays achieves high radiated power through coherent spatial power combining. The coupled oscillators are usually designed to produce constant aperture phase. Oscillators are injection locked to each other or to a master oscillator to produce coherent radiation. Oscillators do not necessarily oscillate at their tuning frequency.

Coherent Cerenkov radiation from the Spacelab 2 electron beam

The plasma environment of the Spacelab 2 mission was investigated through the deployment of the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) by the Space Shuttle Orbiter and the Orbiter's ejection of a continuous 1-keV/50-mA electron beam along a field line. As the PDP flew by the beam, its plasma-wave instrument detected intense whistler-mode radiation originating from the beam. A detailed model has been developed of the coherent Cerenkov emission process, using a one-dimensional computer simulation of the beam to model the expected phase space structure of the electrons. The power calculated for the modeled 200-m beam segment can easily account for the measured whistler mode wave power.

Coherent energy loss effects in dihadron azimuthal angular correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at small x

We perform an exploratory study of the role of coherent, medium-induced energy loss in azimuthal angular correlations in dihadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small x where the target proton/nucleus is modeled as a Color Glass Condensate. In this approach coherent radiative energy loss is part of the higher order corrections to the leading order dihadron production cross section. We include the effects of both gluon saturation and coherent radiative energy loss and show that radiative cold-matter energy loss has a significant effect on the so-called coincidence probability for the back-to-back production of dihadrons in DIS. In conclusion, we also define a double ratio of coincidence probabilities for a nucleus and proton targets and show that it is very robust against higher order radiative corrections.

Spectral and Spatial Properties of Amplified Radiation in High Gain Tapering Enhanced Stimulated Super-radiant Amplification Regime (Technical Report)

There is a wide convergence of scientific and industrial interests in understanding the physics of high efficiency conversion of relativistic electron beam power into coherent radiation. Improved understanding would open the door to ultrahigh intensity X-ray laser pulses (single shot coherent imaging and Schwingerfield physics), as well as at longer wavelength for fast throughput material processing (EUV-lithography). Modern particle accelerators can be extremely efficient (approaching 50 %) in terms of wall-plug energy use. State-of-the-art light sources on the other hand do not take advantage of all the available power and most of it is left in the beam and simply wasted on the beam dump. This proposal aimed at developing a program based on Tapered Enhanced Stimulated Superradiant Amplification to address the current limitation in electron-based coherent radiation generation exploiting the progress in high brightness beam generation and strong coupling with the electromagnetic field in a strongly tapered undulator system.

New MicroBooNE Single Photon Searches: Delta Radiative Decay, Coherent, and Inclusive

The MicroBooNE experiment is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. The LArTPC technology allows us to distinguish between electron and photon showers, which is crucial for identifying the source of the long-standing anomalous excess reported by MiniBooNE. Initial MicroBooNE results have challenged the electron interpretation, which highlights the importance of further study of the single photon channel. In this talk, we present results from three new and improved searches for single photons, offering a wider probe of the photon channel: an enhanced search for NC Delta radiative single photon production, the world’s first search for neutrino-induced coherent single photon production, and an inclusive search for single photons in a diverse set of topologies.

Gravitational lens of the sun - Its potential for observations and communications over interstellar distances

The gravitational field of the sun acts as a spherical lens to magnify the intensity of radiation from a distant source along a semi-infinite focal line. A spacecraft anywhere on that line in principle could observe, eavesdrop, and communicate over interstellar distances, using equipment comparable in size and power with what is now used for interplanetary distances. If one neglects coronal effects, the maximum magnification factor for coherent radiation is inversely proportional to the wavelength, being 100 million at 1 millimeter. The principal difficulties are that the nearest point on the focal half-line is about 550 times the sun-earth distance, separate spacecraft would be needed to work with each stellar system of interest, and the solar corona would severely limit the intensity of coherent radiation while also restricting operations to relatively short wavelengths.

Terawatt attosecond x-ray source driven by a plasma accelerator

Plasma accelerators can generate ultra-high-brightness electron beams that open the door to light sources with a smaller physical footprint and properties un-achievable with conventional accelerator technology. In this paper, we show that electron beams from Plasma WakeField Accelerators can generate few-cycle coherent tunable soft x-ray pulses with TW peak power and a duration of tens of attoseconds, an order of magnitude more powerful, shorter, and with better stability than state-of-the-art X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). Such a light source would significantly enhance the ability to experimentally investigate electron dynamics on ultrafast timescales, having a broad-ranging impact across multiple scientific fields. Rather than starting from noise as in typical XFELs, the x-ray emission in this approach is driven by coherent radiation from a pre-bunched, high peak current electron beam of attosecond duration. This relaxes the restrictive tolerances that have hindered progress toward utilizing plasma accelerators as coherent x-ray drivers thus far, presenting a new paradigm for advanced accelerator light source applications.

CoSyR: A novel beam dynamics code for the modeling of synchrotron radiation effects

The self-consistent nonlinear dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam interacting with its complete self-fields is a fundamental problem underpinning many of the accelerator design issues in high brightness beam applications, as well as the development of advanced accelerators. Particularly, synchrotron radiation induced effects in a magnetic dispersive beamline element can lead to collective beam instabilities and emittance growth. A novel beam dynamics code is developed based on a Lagrangian method for the calculation of the particles’ radiation near-fields using wavefront/wavelet meshes via the Green’s function of the Maxwell equations. These fields are then interpolated onto a moving mesh for dynamic update of the beam. This method allows radiation co-propagation and self-consistent interaction with the beam in 2D/3D simulations at greatly reduced numerical errors. Multiple levels of parallelisms are inherent in this method and implemented in our code CoSyR to enable at-scale simulations of nonlinear beam dynamics on modern computing platforms using MPI, multi-threading, and GPUs. Here, the current 2D implementation of CoSyR has been used to evaluate the transverse and longitudinal coherent radiation effects on the beam and to investigate beam optics designs proposed for mitigation of beam brightness degradation in a magnetic bunch compressor. In this paper, the design of CoSyR, as well as the benchmark with other coherent synchrotron radiation models, are described and discussed. Extension of the core algorithms to 3D is possible and planned.

AI-Assisted Conceptual Development of a Pre-Geometric Cosmological Model - An Exercise in AI-Assisted Conceptual Framework Generation, Paper III: Cosmological Structure and Predictions

This paper develops the cosmological consequences of the replication-driven cosmogenesis framework introduced in Paper I and the emergent geometric structure established in Paper II. After the replication epoch freezes out, the coherent sector occupies a finite spectral band and contains a population of excited states. The relaxation of these excited coherent configurations does not produce coherent radiation; instead, all released energy flows into the incoherent substrate, where the randomizer acts as a rapid phase-scrambling mechanism. This process generates an effectively thermal radiation bath, providing a natural reheating mechanism that requires neither inflaton oscillations nor scalar-field potentials, and can be contrasted with standard scenarios of nonperturbative reheating dynamics. Subsequent symmetry-breaking transitions in the coherent vacuum inject additional radiation, yielding a multi-stage thermal history with well-defined energy transfers. We derive the effective equations of state for each component—the cosmological vacuum, the coherent vacuum, and the radiation bath—and show how their interplay produces an FRW-like expansion. The discrete sequence of coherent-state relaxations imprints a distinctive multi-peaked stochastic gravitational-wave background, whose spectral structure reflects the underlying hierarchy of coherent frequencies. Potential observational signatures in the LISA and mid-band frequency ranges are highlighted, providing concrete avenues to test this replication-based cosmological framework in the context of standard cosmological gravitational-wave backgrounds and LISA-oriented forecasts.

Experimental Demonstration of Dark‐State Metasurface Laser with Controllable Radiative Coupling

Abstract Lasing at the nanoscale using plasmonic nanoparticles offers the prospect of strong field concentration, hence strong light−matter interactions, low lasing thresholds, and ultrafast operation. However plasmonic nanoparticles suffer from high dissipative and radiative losses, the latter being rigidly tied to the shape of the nanoparticles and symmetry of their localized plasmon resonant modes. To overcome this limitation, recent theoretical work proposes using direct lasing into dark surface states to construct lasers that conceptually allow for independent implementation of the lasing state and its coherent radiation output. Here, lasing in dark resonant states of a metasurface laser and controllable coherent outcoupling of radiation with the aid of a tightly coupled, weakly radiative metasurface are demonstrated experimentally. The laser is implemented using a thin, low‐loss dielectric film supporting surface mode‐like dark dielectric bound states and the coupling metasurface is composed of small non‐resonant scatterers that controllably but weakly perturb the dark mode and turn it partially bright. Distinct far‐field signatures that can be observed experimentally for both dark and bright lasing are identified and demonstrated. The scalability of this design, here implemented for lasing in the near‐infrared, enables large‐aperture ultra‐thin coherent light sources with controllable emission from the infrared to the visible.

Optical radiation from the Crab pulsar

Possible mechanisms for producing the optical radiation from the Crab pulsar are proposed and discussed. There are severe difficulties in interpreting the radiation as being produced by an incoherent process, whether it be synchrotron radiation, inverse-Compton radiation, or curvature radiation. It is proposed, therefore, that radiation in the optical part of the spectrum is coherent. In the polar cap model, a small bunch of electrons and positrons forms near each primary electron as a result of the pair-production cascade process. Turbulent electric field components associated with large-scale bunching may lead to separation of the electrons and positrons in space and in energy, with the result that coherent radiation may be produced by the electrons, the positrons, or both. Calculations, which involve a number of simplifying assumptions, indicate that the optical radiation from the Crab pulsar can be understood in this way if the mass of the star is approximately 0.3 solar mass. Various consequences of this model, which may be subjected to observational test, are discussed.
