Design, processing, and testing of LSI arrays for space station

Data for the beam-leaded silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) process using the TA5388 dual-complementary pair plus inverted circuit show the stability of the dc device characteristics through the complete beam-lead processing and packaging steps. A more complex circuit, the TA6567 - a silicon-gate, voltage-sense BL/CMOS/SOS 256-bit RAM, has also been made that was functionally perfect at wafer probe. Efforts to increase the yield of this circuit and to obtain electrically perfect packaged units are discussed.

Power and stability limitations of resonant tunneling diodes

Stability criteria for resonant tunneling diodes are investigated. Details of how extrinsic elements, such as series inductance and parallel capacitance, affect the stability are presented. A GaAs/AlAs/InGaAs/AlAs/GaAs double-barrier diode is investigated, showing the effect of different modes of low-frequency oscillation and the extrinsic circuit required for stabilization. The effect of device stabilization on high-frequency power generation is described. The main conclusions of the paper are: (1) stable resonant tunneling diode operation is difficult to obtain, and (2) the circuit and device conditions required for stable operation greatly reduce the amount of power that can be produced by these devices.

Large-signal Stability Analysis of Grid-forming Inverters with Equivalent-circuit Models

Here, this paper proposes an energy function-based direct method for large-signal stability assessment of grid-forming (GFM) inverters leveraging an equivalent-circuit representation of all involved control- and physical-layer dynamics. Three different primary controls, a standard inner-current outer-voltage cascaded-control architecture, output LCL filter, and reference-current saturation limiting are featured in the modeling and analysis framework. A composite energy function for the GFM inverter is obtained by summing up individual energy contributions gleaned from the circuit representation. The approach can readily be generalized to different primary controls, output-filter arrangements, and current limiters since it is based on a circuit-theoretic foundation. Numerical simulations validate the efficacy of the approach in estimating the critical clearing time following a large-signal disturbance.

Healing of voids in the aluminum metallization of integrated circuit chips

The thermal stability of GaAs modulation-doped field effect transistors (MODFETs) is evaluated in order to identify failure mechanisms and validate the reliability of these devices. The transistors were exposed to thermal step-stress and characterized at ambient temperatures to indicate device reliability, especially that of the transistor ohmic contacts with and without molybdenum diffusion barriers. The devices without molybdenum exhibited important transconductance deterioration. MODFETs with molybdenum diffusion barriers were tolerant to temperatures above 300 C. This tolerance indicates that thermally activated failure mechanisms are slow at operational temperatures. Therefore, high-reliability MODFET-based circuits are possible.

Multiplicative Shot-Noise: A New Route to Stability of Plastic Networks

Fluctuations of synaptic weights, among many other physical, biological, and ecological quantities, are driven by coincident events of two “parent” processes. Here we propose a multiplicative shot-noise model that can capture the behaviors of a broad range of such natural phenomena, and analytically derive an approximation that accurately predicts its statistics. We apply our results to study the effects of a multiplicative synaptic plasticity rule that was recently extracted from measurements in physiological conditions. Using mean-field theory analysis and network simulations, we investigate how this rule shapes the connectivity and dynamics of recurrent spiking neural networks. The multiplicative plasticity rule is shown to support efficient learning of input stimuli, and it gives a stable, unimodal synaptic-weight distribution with a large fraction of strong synapses. The strong synapses remain stable over long times but do not “run away.” Our results suggest that the multiplicative shot-noise offers a new route to understand the tradeoff between flexibility and stability in neural circuits and other dynamic networks.

A Study on Effect of Tuning Capacitor in Dynamic Radioisotope Power Systems

This study presents the effect of tuning capacitors on the power factor and power output of a gas spring-based free-piston Stirling convertor—Advanced Stirling convertor—when the convertor runs on a forced-oscillation type controller. More specifically, this paper studies how off-nominal tuning capacitance values affects the Stirling convertor in terms of the piston stability and electrical power output, when the convertor is operated by forced-oscillation type controller, such as an alternating current bus controller, and operating conditions of the convertor are unchanged. It has been widely known that tuning capacitors are important circuit components to stabilize the piston amplitude of the free-piston Stirling convertors and correct the power factor for high electrical power output. Recent modeling analysis conducted by NASA Glenn Research Center, however, suggests that while the stability of the convertor is affected by the tuning capacitor value, the power factor and the electrical power output are not affected by the tuning capacitor value, as long as the convertor is controlled by a forced-oscillation controller and the convertor operating conditions, such as the hot-end/cold-end temperatures, piston amplitude, and operating frequency, are unchanged. To verify the modeling analysis results, a test setup is devised where the convertor is controlled by a forced-oscillation controller and the piston amplitude, hot-end temperature, and charge pressure are controlled to 4mm, 760˚C, and 485psig, respectively, while the tuning capacitor value is changed from its nominal value, 840μF to 1040μF and 1240μF. Furthermore, the vibration test results of the same convertor with the three tuning capacitor values are also presented in this paper to show the effect of the tuning capacitor value on the convertor stability. The test results suggest that when the convertor is controlled by a forced-oscillation, the tuning capacitor value determines the convertor stability but not the power factor nor electrical power output. Therefore, the tuning capacitance value in forced-oscillation controllers should be determined based on the convertor stability, system mass, and volume.

The design of hydraulic pressure regulators that are stable without the use of sensing line restrictors or frictional dampers

Parameters controlled in design determine the stability of hydraulic pressure regulators in service. The non-linear sensing line restrictor can provide stability, but degrades the transient response. Linear damping is not always physically realizable and is sensitive to clearance and viscosity. Design relationships are analytically derived through which regulators can be made to be stable without the use of either of these damping means. The analytical distinctions between the parameters derived and those in prior literature are discussed. An analytically derived circuit component that stabilizes an otherwise unstable regulator and its experimental verification is described.

Development of a satellite microwave radiometer to sense the surface temperature of the world oceans

A proposed S-band radiometer for determining the ocean surface temperature with an absolute accuracy of + or - 1 Kelvin and a resolution of + or - .1 Kelvin was placed under the Advanced Applications Flight Experiment for further development into Nimbus readiness state. The results of assessing the following are described: effects due to the state of the sea surface, effects caused by the intervening atmosphere, and effects associated with imperfections in the instrument itself. An extensive sea truth program is also described for correlation of aircraft test flight measurements or of satellite remote measurement to in-situ data. An improved radiometer design is a modified Dicke-switch type with temperature stabilized, microwave integrated circuit, front-end and with a pulsed injection-noise nulling system. The radiometer has a multimode rectangular horn antenna with very low ohmic losses and a beam efficiency of 98% or better.

Design, processing, and testing of LSI arrays for space station

At wafer probe, units of the TA6567 circuit, a beam leaded COS/MOS/SOS 256-bit RAM, were demonstrated to be functionally perfect. An aluminum gate current-sense version and a silicon-gate voltage-sense version of this memory were developed. Initial base line data for the beam lead SOS process using the TA5388 circuit show the stability of the dc device characteristics through the beam lead processing.

Static dc voltage stabilizer-converter

The advantages are outlined of a static dc voltage converter combining the functions of the feed voltage stabilizer simultaneously. A comparison is made between the circuits for the known static stabilizer converter and that developed by the author. A characteristic feature of the improved system is the increased stabilization coefficient, low output impedance and the possibility of smooth regulation of the output voltage. A practical diagram is presented for the improved high voltage stabilizer converter and its parameters.

The design of hydraulic pressure regulators that are stable without the use of sensing line restrictors or frictional dampers

A direct-acting hydraulic pressure regulator design which incorporates stability margin, response and droop margin is developed. The pressure regulator system does not involve a nonlinear sensing line restrictor (which may degrade transient response) or linear damping (which is sensitive to clearance and viscosity). The direct-acting hydraulic pressure regulator makes use of the technique of lead network stabilization (i.e., the tuned stabilizer concept). An analytically derived circuit pressure regulator is tested to study the stability limit under a parallel capacitive plus resistive load and the stabilizing effect of the tuned stabilizer.

An ac bridge readout for bolometric detectors

The authors have developed a bolometer readout circuit which greatly improves the low-frequency stability of bolometric detectors. The circuit uses an ac bias voltage and two matched bolometers and allows stable dc bolometer operation for integration times greater than 10 s. In astronomical applications the readout allows for qualitatively different observation modes (e.g. staring or slow-drift scanning) which are particularly well suited for space observations and for the use of arrays. In many applications the readout can increase sensitivity. The authors present noise spectra for 4He temperature bolometers with no excess noise at frequencies greater than 0.1 Hz. The measured optical responsivity of a bolometer operated with the present readout is the same as that of a bolometer operated with a conventional readout.

A high-performance constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer

A high-performance constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer has been designed based on a system theory analysis that can be extended to arbitrary order. A motivating factor behind the design was to achieve the highest possible frequency response while ensuring overall system stability. Based on these considerations, the design of the circuit and the selection of components is discussed in depth. Basic operating instructions are included in an operator's guide. The analysis is used to identify operating modes, observed in all anemometers, that are misleading in the sense that the operator can be deceived by interpreting an erroneous frequency response. Unlike other anemometers, this instrument provides front panel access to all the circuit parameters which affect system stability and frequency response. Instructions are given on how to identify and avoid these rather subtle and undesirable operating modes by appropriate adjustment of the controls. Details, such as fabrication drawings and a parts list, are provided to enable others to construct the instrument.

Development of a unit cell for a Ge:Ga detector array

Two modules of gallium-doped germanium (Ge:Ga) infrared detectors with integrated multiplexing readouts and supporting drive electronics were designed and tested. This development investigated the feasibility of producing two-dimensional Ge:Ga arrays by stacking linear modules in a housing capable of providing uniaxial stress for enhanced long-wavelength response. Each module includes 8 detectors (1x1x2 mm) mounted to a sapphire board. The element spacing is 12 microns. The back faces of the detector elements are beveled with an 18 deg angle, which was proved to significantly enhance optical absorption. Each module includes a different silicon metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) readout. The first circuit was built from discrete MOSFET components; the second incorporated devices taken from low-temperature integrated circuit multiplexers. The latter circuit exhibited much lower stray capacitance and improved stability. Using these switched-FET circuits, it was demonstrated that burst readout, with multiplexer active only during the readout period, could successfully be implemented at approximately 3.5 K.
