Nonlocal chiral contributions to generalized parton distributions of the proton at nonzero skewness

We compute the one-loop contributions to spin-averaged generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the proton from pseudoscalar mesons with intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states at nonzero skewness. Our framework is based on nonlocal covariant chiral effective theory, with ultraviolet divergences regularized by introducing a relativistic regulator derived consistently from the nonlocal Lagrangian. Using the splitting functions calculated from the nonlocal Lagrangian, we find the nonzero skewness GPDs from meson loops by convoluting with the phenomenological pion GPD and the generalized distribution amplitude, and verify that these satisfy the correct polynomiality properties. We also compute the lowest two moments of GPDs to quantify the meson loop effects on the Dirac, Pauli, and gravitational form factors of the proton.

Propagator Zeros and Lattice Chiral Gauge Theories

Symmetric mass generation (SMG) has been advocated as a mechanism to render mirror fermions massive without symmetry breaking, ultimately aiming for the construction of lattice chiral gauge theories. It has been argued that in an SMG phase, the poles in the mirror fermion propagators are replaced by zeros. Using an effective Lagrangian approach, we investigate the role of propagator zeros when the gauge field is turned on, finding that they act as coupled ghost states. In four dimensions, a propagator zero makes an opposite-sign contribution to the one-loop beta function as compared to a normal fermion. In two dimensional Abelian theories, a propagator zero makes a negative contribution to the photon mass squared. In addition, propagator zeros generate the same anomaly as propagator poles. Thus, gauge invariance will always be maintained in an SMG phase, in fact, even if the target chiral gauge theory is anomalous, but unitarity of the gauge theory is lost. Nonlocal Effective Field Theory and Its Applications

We review recent applications of nonlocal effective field theory, particularly focusing on nonlocal chiral effective theory and nonlocal quantum electrodynamics (QED), as well as an extension of nonlocal effective theory to curved spacetime. For the chiral effective theory, we discuss the calculation of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon at nonzero skewness, along with the corresponding gravitational (or mechanical) form factors, within the convolution framework. In the QED application, we extend the nonlocal formulation to construct the most general nonlocal QED interaction, in which both the propagator and fundamental QED vertex are modified due to the nonlocal Lagrangian, while preserving the Ward–Green–Takahashi identities. For consistency with the modified propagator, a solid quantization is proposed, and the nonlocal QED is applied to explain the lepton g−2 anomalies without the introduction of new particles beyond the standard model. Finally, with an extension of the chiral effective action to curved spacetime, we investigate the nonlocal energy–momentum tensor and gravitational form factors of the nucleon with a nonlocal pion–nucleon interaction.

Flows in the space of interacting chiral boson theories

We study interacting theories of N left-moving and N ¯ right-moving Floreanini-Jackiw bosons in two dimensions. A parametrized family of such theories is shown to enjoy (nonmanifest) Lorentz invariance if and only if its Lagrangian obeys a flow equation driven by a function of the energy-momentum tensor. We discuss the canonical quantization of such theories along classical stress tensor flows, focusing on the case of the root- T T ¯ deformation, where we obtain perturbative results for the deformed spectrum in a certain large-momentum limit. In the special case N = N ¯ , we consider the quantum effective action for the root- T T ¯ -deformed theory by expanding around a general classical background, and we find that the one-loop contribution vanishes for backgrounds with constant scalar gradients. Our analysis can also be interpreted via dual U ( 1 ) Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions, which might be used to describe deformations of charged AdS 3 black holes or quantum Hall systems. Interacting chiral form field theories and $$ T\overline{T} $$-like flows in six and higher dimensions

Abstract In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariantp-form theories and corresponding$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called “clone” construction.

3d TQFTs from Argyres–Douglas theories

We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres–Douglas theories on S 1 × M 3 with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the S 1 . For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern–Simons and Rozansky–Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the ${\left({G}_{2}\right)}_{1}$ and ${\left({F}_{4}\right)}_{1}$ Chern–Simons theories. Our construction is based on an intriguing relation between topologically twisted partition functions, wild Hitchin characters, and chiral algebras which, when combined together, relate Coulomb branch and Higgs branch data of the same 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. Finally, we test our proposal by applying localization techniques to the conjectural $\mathcal{N}=1$ UV Lagrangian descriptions of the (A 1 , A 2 ), (A 1 , A 3 ) and (A 1 , D 3 ) theories.

Classical integrability of root-$T\overline{T}$ flows

The root-$T\overline{T}$ flow was recently introduced as a universal and classically marginal deformation of any two-dimensional translation-invariant field theory. The flow commutes with the (irrelevant) $T\overline{T}$ flow, and it can be integrated explicitly for a large class of actions, leading to nonanalytic Lagrangians reminiscent of the four-dimensional modified-Maxwell theory (ModMax). It is not a priori obvious whether the root-$T\overline{T}$ flow preserves integrability, as is the case for the $T\overline{T}$ flow. In this paper we demonstrate that this is the case for a large class of classical models by explicitly constructing a deformed Lax connection. We discuss the principal chiral model and the nonlinear sigma models on symmetric and semisymmetric spaces, without or with the Wess-Zumino term. We also construct Lax connections for the two-parameter families of theories deformed by both root-$T\overline{T}$ and $T\overline{T}$ for all of these models.

Collective spin dynamics under dissipative spin Hall torque

Current-induced spin torques in layered magnetic heterostructures have many commonalities across broad classes of magnetic materials. These include not only collinear ferromagnets, ferrimagnets, and antiferromagnets but also more complex noncollinear spin systems. We develop a general Lagrangian–Rayleigh approach for studying the role of dissipative torques, which can pump energy into long-wavelength magnetic dynamics, causing dynamic instabilities. While the Rayleigh structure of such torques is similar for different magnetic materials, their consequences depend sensitively on the nature of the order and, in particular, on whether there is a net magnetic moment. The latter endows the system with a unipolar switching capability, while magnetically compensated materials tend to evolve toward limit cycles, at large torques, with chirality dependent on the torque sign. Apart from the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases, we discuss ferrimagnets, which display an intricate competition between switching and limit cycles. As a simple case for compensated noncollinear order, we consider isotropic spin glasses and a scenario of their coexistence with a collinear magnetic order.

Chiral algebra, localization, modularity, surface defects, and all that

We study the 2D vertex operator algebra (VOA) construction in 4D N = 2 superconformal field theories on S 3 × S 1 , focusing on both old puzzles and new observations. The VOA lives on a two-torus T 2 ⊂ S 3 × S 1 , it is 1 2 Z -graded, and this torus is equipped with the natural choice of spin structure (1,0) for the Z + 1 2 -graded operators, corresponding to the NS sector vacuum character. By analyzing the possible refinements of the Schur index that preserves the VOA, we find that it admits discrete deformations, which allows access to the remaining spin structures (1,1), (0,1), and (0,0), of which the latter two involve the inclusion of a particular surface defect. For Lagrangian theories, we perform the detailed analysis: we describe the natural supersymmetric background, perform localization, and derive the gauged symplectic boson action on a torus in any spin structure. In the absence of flavor fugacities, the 2D and 4D path integrals precisely match, including the Casimir factors. We further analyze the 2D theory: we identify its integration cycle and the two-point functions and interpret flavor holonomies as screening charges in the VOA. Next, we make some observations about modularity; the T-transformation acts on our four partition functions and lifts to a large diffeomorphism on S 3 × S 1 . More interestingly, we generalize the four partition functions on the torus to an infinite family labeled by both the spin structure and the integration cycle inside the complexified maximal torus of the gauge group. Members of this family transform into one another under the full modular group, and we confirm the recent observation that the S-transform of the Schur index in Lagrangian theories exhibits logarithmic behavior. Finally, we comment on how locally our background reproduces the Ω-background.

Pion-nucleon scattering in baryon chiral perturbation theory combined with the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion

This work implements the combined baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT) and 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansions for pion-nucleon elastic scattering. The effective theory is based on the baryon sector dynamical spin-flavor 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(4) symmetry emergent in the large 𝑁 𝑐 limit, whose breaking is controlled by the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion. The noncommutativity of the chiral and 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansions in unitarity corrections (loops) requires a linking of both expansions. As it was shown in the case of baryon masses and currents, the natural linking is the 𝜉 expansion, in which 𝒪⁡(𝑝) = 𝒪⁡(1/𝑁 𝑐 ) = 𝒪⁡(𝜉). The spin-flavor symmetry requires that the ground state baryons span an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(4) symmetric irreducible representation which implies that in particular 𝑁 and Δ are active degrees of freedom in the effective theory. The scattering amplitude is expanded to the next-to-next-to leading order in the 𝜉 expansion, corresponding to the one-loop contributions with the leading-order Lagrangian. The results are given for generic 𝑁 𝑐 in order to demonstrate the consistency of the framework. The spin-flavor symmetry plays a central role in maintaining the consistency of the effective theory with respect to the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion. This consistency manifests itself in an improvement in the convergence of the low energy expansion with respect to the case of the ordinary BChPT without an explicit dynamical Δ, which is known to be inconsistent with the constraints of 𝑁 𝑐 scaling. Fits to the 𝜋⁢𝑁 → 𝜋⁢𝑁, 𝑆, 𝑃, and 𝐷 partial wave amplitudes from the SAID data base are finally used to test the framework and to determine the energy range of its applicability.
