Joint Analysis of Program Data Representations using Machine Learning for Improved Software Assurance and Development Capabilities

We explore the use of multiple deep learning models for detecting flaws in software programs. Current, standard approaches for flaw detection rely on a single representation of a software program (e.g., source code or a program binary). We illustrate that, by using techniques from multimodal deep learning, we can simultaneously leverage multiple representations of software programs to improve flaw detection over single representation analyses. Specifically, we adapt three deep learning models from the multimodal learning literature for use in flaw detection and demonstrate how these models outperform traditional deep learning models. We present results on detecting software flaws using the Juliet Test Suite and Linux Kernel.

Developing Capabilities in Physical and Computational Sciences

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) performs fundamental research in support of the science missions of Offices of Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR), High Energy Physics (HEP), Nuclear Physics (NP), and Fusion Energy Sciences (FES), and others within the domains of the chemical, materials, computational sciences, mathematics, and physics. This LDRD project aims to provide funding to develop/demonstrate research capabilities for proposals and publications to support these science missions. Staff will propose small research tasks/projects to be performed under this overall project.

Advanced orbital servicing capabilities development

The potential servicing requirements of the Space Station and associated free-flying platforms are identified and analyzed; the selected servicing tasks encompass orbital maneuver vehicle refueling, reaction-control subsystem thruster module replacement, and body-mounted radiator changeout. Attention is presently given to the commonality of all servicing activities, the definition of servicing interfaces, and the roles played by automation and robotics. The servicing concepts for each representative servicing task were selected on the basis of a weighed combination of seven factors: safety, productivity, relative cost, mission effectiveness, design flexibility and simplicity, and development status.

SRM Internal Flow Tests and Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis: Cold Flow Analyses and CFD Analysis Capability Development - Volume 4

An evaluation of the effect of model inlet air temperature drift during a test run was performed to aid in the decision on the need for and/or the schedule for including heaters in the SRMAFTE. The Sverdrup acceptance test data was used to determine the drift in air temperature during runs over the entire range of delivered flow rates and pressures. The effect of this temperature drift on the model Reynolds number was also calculated. It was concluded from this study that a 2% change in absolute temperature during a test run could be adequately accounted for by the data analysis program. A handout package of these results was prepared and presented to ED35 management.

TAMDAR Capabilities Development

In this viewgraph presentation, information is provided on a collaboration between NASA, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), and NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association), particularly regarding the development of a TAMDAR Sensor system. TAMDAR is envisioned to downlink weather data such as icing, temperature, pressure altitude, humidity, magnetic heading, eddy dissipation rate, true airspeed, dew point, density altitude, and winds at altitude from non-jet aircraft. The weather data will be sent to FSL (Forecast Systems Laboratory), FSS (Flight Service Station), ATC (Air Traffic Control), AWC (Aviation Weather Center), and others via a ground-based infrastructure and to other aircraft. New weather products will be generated and uplinked to the cockpit.

Thermomechanical Multiaxial Fatigue Testing Capability Developed

Structural components in aeronautical gas turbine engines typically experience multiaxial states of stress under nonisothermal conditions. To estimate the durability of the various components in the engine, one must characterize the cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of the materials used under thermal and complex mechanical loading conditions. To this end, a testing protocol and associated test control software were developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center for thermomechanical axial-torsional fatigue tests. These tests are to be performed on thin-walled, tubular specimens fabricated from the cobalt-based superalloy Haynes 188. The software is written in C and runs on an MS-DOS based microcomputer.
