First Measurement of the B + → π + π 0 π 0 Branching Fraction and C P Asymmetry

We study B + → π + π 0 π 0 using 711 fb -1 of data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. Here we measure an inclusive branching fraction of (19.0 ±1.5 ±1.4)×10 -6 and an inclusive CP asymmetry of (9.2 ±6.8 ±0.7)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic, and a B + → ρ(770) + π 0 branching fraction of (11.2 ± 1.1 ± 0.9 $^{+0.8}_{-1.6}$)× 10 -6 , where the third uncertainty is due to possible interference with B + → ρ(1450) + π 0 . We present the first observation of a structure around 1 GeV/c 2 in the π 0 π 0 mass spectrum, with a significance of 6.4σ, and measure a branching fraction to be (6.9 ±0.9 ±0.6) × 10 -6 . We also report a measurement of local CP asymmetry in this structure.

Evidence of a $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ Structure in $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$

An amplitude analysis of $B^0$ → $J/$$\psi$$\phi$$K_S^0$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the $J/$$\psi$$K_S^0$ system, named $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 , is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991$_{–10 –17}^{+12 +9}$ MeV/⁢c 2 and 105$_{–25 –23}^{+29 +17}$ MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) 0 state is likely to be the isospin partner of the $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) + state, previously observed in the $J/ψK^+$ system of the $B^+$→$J/ψ$$\phi$$K^+$ decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral $T_{ψs1}^{θ}$⁢⁢(4000) states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.

𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ Resonance Form Factors from 𝐵→ 𝜋⁢𝜋⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ in Lattice QCD

The decay 𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ is an attractive process for determining the magnitude of the smallest Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑏 |, and can provide new insights into the origin of the long-standing exclusive-inclusive discrepancy in determinations of this standard-model parameter. This requires a nonperturbative QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors 𝑉, 𝐴 0 , 𝐴 1 , and 𝐴 12 . The unstable nature of the 𝜌 resonance has prevented precise lattice QCD calculations of these form factors to date. Here, we present the first lattice QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors in which the 𝜌 is treated properly as a resonance in 𝑃-wave 𝜋⁢𝜋 scattering. To this end, we use the Lellouch-Lüscher finite-volume formalism to compute the 𝐵 → 𝜋⁢𝜋 form factors as a function of both momentum transfer and 𝜋⁢𝜋 invariant mass, and then analytically continue to the 𝜌 resonance pole. This calculation is performed with 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors at a pion mass of approximately 320 MeV, and demonstrates a clear path toward results at the physical point.

Semitauonic b-hadron decays: A lepton flavor universality laboratory

The study of lepton flavor universality violation (LFUV) in semitauonic b-hadron decays has become increasingly important in light of long-standing anomalies in their measured branching fractions, and the large datasets anticipated from the LHC experiments and Belle II. Here, in this review, a comprehensive survey of the experimental environments and methodologies for semitauonic LFUV measurements at the B factories and LHCb is undertaken, along with an overview of the theoretical foundations and predictions for a wide range of semileptonic decay observables. The future prospects of controlling systematic uncertainties down to the percent level, matching the precision of standard model (SM) predictions, are examined. Furthermore, new perspectives and caveats on combinations of the LFUV data are discussed and the world averages for the R(D(*)) ratios are revisited. Here it is demonstrated that different treatments for the correlations of uncertainties from D** excited states can vary the current 3σ tension with the SM within a 1σ range. Prior experimental overestimates of D**τν contributions may further exacerbate this. The precision of future measurements is also estimated; their power to exploit full differential information, and solutions to the inherent difficulties in self-consistent new physics interpretations of LFUV observables, are explored.

B-flavor tagging at Belle II

We report on new flavor tagging algorithms developed to determine the quark-flavor content of bottom (B) mesons at Belle II. The algorithms provide essential inputs for measurements of quark-flavor mixing and charge-parity violation. We validate and evaluate the performance of the algorithms using hadronic B decays with flavor-specific final states reconstructed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62.8fb -1 , collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We measure the total effective tagging efficiency to be ε eff = (30.0 ± 1.2(stat) ± 0.4(syst))% for a category-based algorithm and ε eff = (28.8 ± 1.2(stat) ± 0.4(syst))% for a deep learning-based algorithm.

Binding energy of the 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 tetraquark from lattice QCD with relativistic and nonrelativistic heavy-quark actions

We present a new determination of the $b\bar{b}$𝑢⁢𝑑 (𝐽 𝑃 = 1 + , 𝐼 = 0) tetraquark binding energy using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with domain-wall light quarks and a nonperturbatively tuned three-parameter anisotropic-clover “relativistic” action for the 𝑏 quarks. We also perform a direct comparison with a reanalysis of data generated in prior work using a lattice-nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) action for the 𝑏 quarks and otherwise identical parameters. Using the new data with relativistic 𝑏 quarks from seven different ensembles with multiple lattice spacings and pion masses, we perform combined chiral and continuum extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) RHQ =(−76 ±23) MeV. For the NRQCD data from five ensembles, we perform chiral-only extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) NRQCD = (−74 ±17 ±10) MeV. The lower magnitude of the results obtained here, compared to the original analysis in [Phys. Rev. D 100, 014503 (2019)], is due to the use of the symmetric parts of the correlation matrices with local four-quark operators only.

Recombination of 𝐵 𝑐 mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

High-energy heavy-ion collisions have been suggested as a favorable environment for the production of 𝐵 𝑐 mesons, due to a much larger abundance of charm and bottom quarks compared to elementary reactions. Motivated by recent CMS data for 𝐵$^{+}_{𝑐}$ production in Pb-Pb(5.02 TeV) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we deploy a previously developed transport approach for charmonia and bottomonia to evaluate the kinetics of 𝐵 𝑐 mesons throughout the fireball formed in these reactions. The main inputs to our approach are two transport parameters: the 𝐵 𝑐 's reaction rate and equilibrium limit. Both quantities are determined by previous calculations via a combination of charm and bottom sectors. In-medium binding energies of 𝐵 𝑐 mesons are calculated from a thermodynamic 𝑇 matrix with a lattice-QCD constrained potential, and figure in their inelastic reaction rates. Temperature-dependent equilibrium limits include charm- and bottom-quark fugacities based on their initial production. We compute the centrality dependence of inclusive 𝐵 𝑐 production and transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) spectra using two different recombination models: instantaneous coalescence and resonance recombination. The main uncertainty in the resulting nuclear modification factors, 𝑅 AA , is currently associated with the 𝐵 𝑐 cross section in elementary 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions, caused by the uncertainty in the branching ratio for the 𝐵$^{−}_{𝑐}$ → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇 − ⁢$\overline{𝜈}$ decay. Our results indicate a large enhancement of the 𝑅 AA at low 𝑝 𝑇 , with significant regeneration contributions up to 𝑝 𝑇 ≃ 20GeV. Comparisons to CMS data are carried out but firm conclusions will require a more accurate value of the branching ratio, or alternative channels to measure the 𝐵 𝑐 production in 𝑝⁢ collisions.

Charm and bottom hadrons in hot hadronic matter

Heavy quarks, and the hadrons containing them, are excellent probes of the QCD medium formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, as they provide essential information on the transport properties of the medium and how quarks color-neutralize into hadrons. Large theoretical and phenomenological efforts have been dedicated thus far to assess the diffusion of charm and bottom quarks in the quark–gluon plasma and their subsequent hadronization into heavy-flavor (HF) hadrons. However, the fireball formed in heavy-ion collisions also features an extended hadronic phase, and therefore any quantitative analysis of experimental observables needs to account for the rescattering of charm and bottom hadrons. This is further reinforced by the presence of a QCD cross-over transition and the notion that the interaction strength is maximal in the vicinity of the pseudo-critical temperature. We review existing approaches for evaluating the interactions of open HF hadrons in a hadronic heat bath and the pertinent results for scattering amplitudes, spectral functions and transport coefficients. While most of the work to date has focused on D -mesons, we also discuss excited states as well as HF baryons and the bottom sector. Both the HF hadro-chemistry and bottom observables will play a key role in future experimental measurements. We also conduct a survey of transport calculations in heavy-ion collisions that have included effects of hadronic HF diffusion and assess its impact on various observables.

Hidden-flavor four-quark states in the charm and bottom region

We discuss the spectrum and the internal composition of ground and excited four-quark states in the charm and bottom energy region. To this end we extend previous calculations within the framework of the relativistic four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equation to include quantum numbers with J P C = 0 + + , 0 − + , 1 − − , 1 + − and 1 + + and study their internal composition in terms of heavy-light meson pairs, hadroquarkonia and diquark-antidiquark clusters. We observe similar patterns in the charm and bottom energy region with different compositions of the four-quark states depending on J P C quantum numbers. Most notably, we find that all states with C · P = + 1 are dominated by heavy-light meson contributions, whereas for axial-vector states with J P C = 1 + − including the Z c ( 3900 ) we find a much more complicated picture depending on the flavor content. We systematically compare our results for the spectrum with existing experimental results and provide predictions for future analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Position-space renormalization schemes for four-quark operators in HQET

Abstract X-space schemes are gauge-invariant, regulator-independent renormalization schemes that are defined by requiring position-space correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators to be equal to their noninteracting values at particular kinematic points. These schemes can be used to nonperturbatively renormalize composite operators in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD), and by computing matching coefficients between theX-space scheme and$$ \overline{\textrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ in the dimensionally-regulated continuum, matrix elements calculated with LQCD can be converted to$$ \overline{\textrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ -renormalized matrix elements. UsingX-space schemes for Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) operators has the additional benefit that appropriate ratios of position-space correlation functions cancel the power-divergent static-quark self-energy of Lattice HQET nonperturbatively. This work presents theO(α S ) matching coefficients betweenX-space renormalized four-quark flavor-nonsinglet HQET operators relevant for the lifetimes of charm- and bottom-hadrons, and four-quark HQET operators relevant for mixing between neutral mesons containing a heavy quark, such asB−$$ \overline{B} $$ B ¯ mixing.

Bottom quark energy loss and hadronization with B + and ${\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0$ nuclear modification factors using pp and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production cross sections of $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ and B$^{+}$ mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{−1}$. The cross sections are based on measurements of the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)ϕ(1020)(K$^{+}$K$^{−}$) and B$^{+}$→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)K$^{+}$ decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) range 7–50 GeV/c and the rapidity interval |y| < 2.4 for the B mesons. The measured p$_{T}$-differential cross sections of B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors, R$_{AA}$, of the B mesons are determined. For p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (with R$_{AA}$ values significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ mesons. In this p$_{T}$ range, the R$_{AA}$ values for the B$^{+}$ mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D$^{0}$ mesons. Below 10 GeV/c, both B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D$^{0}$ mesons, with the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $R$_{AA}$ value consistent with unity. The R$_{AA}$ values found for the B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.

Charmonium Transport in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC

We provide an update on our semi-classical transport approach for quarkonium production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, focusing on 𝐽/𝜓 and 𝜓(2𝑆) mesons in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at both forward and mid-rapidity. In particular, we employ the most recent charm-production cross sections reported in pp collisions, which are pivotal for the magnitude of the regeneration contribution, and their modifications due to cold-nuclear-matter (CNM) effects. Multi-differential observables are calculated in terms of nuclear modification factors as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity, including the contributions from feeddown from bottom hadron decays. For our predictions for 𝜓(2𝑆) production, the mechanism of sequential regeneration relative to the more strongly bound 𝐽/𝜓 meson plays an important role in interpreting recent ALICE data.

Exotic hidden-heavy hadrons and where to find them

The Born-Oppenheimer potentials for QCD with light quarks include adjoint-hadron potentials that are repulsive at short distances and heavy-hadron-pair potentials that approach thresholds at large distances. The adjoint-hadron potentials must connect smoothly to the heavy-hadron-pair potentials at intermediate distances. We identify exotic hidden-heavy hadrons as bound states and resonances in adjoint-hadron potentials that cross below a heavy-hadron-pair threshold before approaching it. This explains why many exotic hidden-charm and hidden-bottom hadrons have energies near heavy-hadron-pair thresholds. The remarkable properties of some exotic hidden-heavy mesons can be explained by fine tunings of adjoint-meson energies in QCD.
