Automated Production of Optimization-Based Control Logics for Dynamic Facade Systems, with Experimental Application to Two-Zone External Venetian Blinds

The primary goal of this research is to devise a system that produces controllers for complex fenestration systems that perform nearly as well as Model Predictive Control but at a level of cost and implementation complexity that rivals simple heuristic controls. To this end, a cloud-based automated controller production system has been set up for a motorized external Venetian blind device, with a simple web interface that can be used by non-experts. The computation cost per controller is in the range of a few dollars, and the control logic is simple enough to be implemented on small and cheap distributed controllers. The web interface allows the user to specify some details of their particular building and window configuration, including orientation, latitude, interior geometries, and lighting and HVAC system parameters. Upon submittal, a cloud-based system configures the necessary files and commands, and then runs thousands of optimizations with them. Once the calculations are finished, the system produces a lookup table and interpolation-based controller scripts that can be used on a simple and cheap distributed controller. This paper describes the underlying models and optimization processes. It also describes the resulting control logics for two cases tested at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Windows Testbed Facility: illuminance maximization subject to glare constraints; and lighting + HVAC energy minimization. The performance of the model-based controllers produced by the automated web-based system are compared to a heuristic ‘block beam’ controller in physical experiments at the Testbed. The experimental results are supplemented by simulation experiments with the same configuration as the Testbed. The results show the illuminance maximizing controller significantly outperforms the heuristic controller in terms of glare avoidance, and also outperforms it in terms of hours of daylight autonomy. The energy minimizing controller also outperforms the heuristic controller. This paper also discusses how the web-based system may be extended to consider other configurations, such as electrochromic windows and thermally massive HVAC systems. Potential roles for this type of system within the building design and construction industry are discussed.

The 2021 Blind PVPMC Modeling Intercomparison

This document provides the instructions for participating in the 2021 blind photovoltaic (PV) modeling intercomparison organized by the PV Performance Modeling Collaborative (PVPMC). It describes the system configurations, metadata, and other information necessary for the modeling exercise. The practical details of the validation datasets are also described. The datasets were published online in open access in April 2023, after completing the analysis of the results.

Methane Quantification Performance of the Quantitative Optical Gas Imaging (QOGI) System Using Single-Blind Controlled Release Assessment

Quantitative optical gas imaging (QOGI) system can rapidly quantify leaks detected by optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras across the oil and gas supply chain. A comprehensive evaluation of the QOGI system’s quantification capability is needed for the successful adoption of the technology. This study conducted single-blind experiments to examine the quantification performance of the FLIR QL320 QOGI system under near-field conditions at a pseudo-realistic, outdoor, controlled testing facility that mimics upstream and midstream natural gas operations. The study completed 357 individual measurements across 26 controlled releases and 71 camera positions for release rates between 0.1 kg Ch 4 /h and 2.9 kg Ch 4 /h of compressed natural gas (which accounts for more than 90% of typical component-level leaks in several production facilities). The majority (75%) of measurements were within a quantification factor of 3 (quantification error of –67% to 200%) with individual errors between –90% and 831%, which reduced to –79% to +297% when the mean of estimates of the same controlled release from multiple camera positions was considered. Performance improved with increasing release rate, using clear sky as plume background, and at wind speeds ≤1 mph relative to other measurement conditions.

Machine learning for natural resource assessment: An application to the blind geothermal systems of Nevada

A study is underway to apply machine learning methods to evaluate natural resource potential. In particular, we are considering the search for blind geothermal systems in Nevada. Beginning with the data and experience from the previous Nevada play fairway analysis project, we are building models in TensorFlow/Keras and gaining experience toward predicting the geothermal resource potential as a probability map. During the first year of this project we have encountered several issues particular to using geological and geophysical data sets with these tools. Through an illustrative example we develop a promising workflow for future use as more data become available and are analyzed.

Flying Blind, or Just Flying Under the Radar? The Underappreciated Power of De Novo Methods of Mass Spectrometric Peptide Identification

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics is a popular and powerful method for precise and highly multiplexed protein identification. The most common method of analyzing untargeted proteomics data is called database searching, where the database is simply a collection of protein sequences from the target organism, derived from genome sequencing. Experimental peptide tandem mass spectra are compared to simplified models of theoretical spectra calculated from the translated genomic sequences. However, in several interesting application areas, such as forensics, archaeology, venomics and others, a genome sequence may not be available, or the correct genome sequence to use is not known. In these cases, de novo peptide identification can play an important role. De novo peptide identification infers peptide sequence directly from the tandem mass spectrum without reference to a sequence database, usually using graph-based or machine learning algorithms. In this review, we provide a basic overview of de novo peptide identification methods and applications, briefly covering de novo algorithms and tools, and focusing in more depth on recent applications from venomics, metaproteomics, forensics, and characterization of antibody drugs.

Randomized Phase 3, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study of Prophylactic Gabapentin for the Reduction of Oral Mucositis Pain During the Treatment of Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether prophylactic gabapentin usage in patients undergoing definitive concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy (chemoRT) for oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) improves treatment-related oral mucositis pain, opioid use, and feeding tube (FT) placement.
