We present measurements from a new microwave instrument that has been deployed at Scott Base, Antarctica, primarily to measure ClO. The new instrument allows for the extension of the time series of lower stratospheric ClO measurements begun in 1996 at this site, while some of the technical improvements offer the possibility of making additional measurements. We show measurements of ClO and O 3 in both the upper and lower stratosphere near both the fall and spring equinox and document the diurnal variations of these measurements throughout the season. The ground-based measurements are compared with Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements, which are available twice per day, and with a NASA Goddard 2D model (GSFC2D) simulation. We show that, in agreement with the GSFC2D model diurnal variations, upper stratospheric ClO mixing ratios gradually increase throughout the daylight hours, while in the lower stratospheric austral spring, when heterogeneous chemistry associated with polar stratospheric clouds occurs, daily maximum ClO mixing ratios of near 2 ppbv occur near noon. We also show measurements of stratospheric O 3 , primarily in the upper stratosphere, which, while exhibiting a low bias of ∼15%–20% relative to Aura MLS, show temporal variations in good agreement with MLS.
Artificial nano Si 3 N 4 derived solid electrolyte interphase enables dendrite-free lithium cycling, effectively suppressing dendrite growth and delivering stable, long-term Li metal anode performance.
Supercapacitors are widely recognized as a favorable option for energy storage due to their higher power density compared to batteries, despite their lower energy density.
Solidification cracking remains a persistent barrier to laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing of solid-solution-strengthened (SSS) Ni-based superalloys and is commonly attributed to carbide formation, liquation-type failure, or elemental segregation. In this work, the cracking behavior of three SSS Ni-based superalloys—Inconel 625 (625), Inconel 617 (617), and Haynes 230 (230)—is examined under comparable LPBF conditions to evaluate the origins of their cracking susceptibility. Carbides were present in both 625 and 230, yet cracking behavior differed significantly. MC-type carbides in 625 remain discrete and preserve liquid connectivity, whereas Cr-rich M23C6 carbides in 230 form at cellular triple junctions that bottleneck the interdendritic liquid network, influencing cracking through liquid connectivity rather than as an independent cause. Alloy 617 exhibited anomalous segregation without resolvable secondary phases yet cracked mildly, indicating that extensive carbide formation is not a prerequisite for cracking. To rationalize these observations, a transport-limited framework is proposed in which cracking occurs when terminal-liquid feeding cannot accommodate solidification-induced strain; among the mechanisms evaluated, this framework is most consistent with the physical constraints imposed by LPBF solidification. Transport-based crack-susceptibility indexes incorporating permeability, viscosity, and solidification kinetics distinguish the alloy hierarchy; permeability ratios Krat increased from approximately 7 (625) to 11.5 (617) and 14.5 (230), with corresponding increases in the μ-weighted mushy zone risk index (CSIMZRM). These results are consistent with transport-limited liquid feeding as a rate-limiting contributor to solidification cracking in LPBF-processed SSS Ni-based superalloys, providing a physically grounded basis for alloy and process design.

Chalcogenide is a proven phase change material used in re-writeable CDs and DVDs. This material changes phases, reversibly and quickly, between an amorphous state that is dull in appearance and electrically high in resistance, and a polycrystalline state that is highly reflective and low in resistance. The application of this commercially proven technology to create dense, high-speed, non-volatile semiconductor memories is discussed.
The cyclic oxidation test results for some 1000 high temperature commercial and experimental alloys have been collected in an EXCEL database. This database represents over thirty years of research at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The data is in the form of a series of runs of specific weight change versus time values for a set of samples tested at a given temperature, cycle time, and exposure time. Included on each run is a set of embedded plots of the critical data. The nature of the data is discussed along with analysis of the cyclic oxidation process. In addition examples are given as to how a set of results can be analyzed. The data is assembled on a read-only compact disk which is available on request from Materials Durability Branch, NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio.
Four mechanofluorochromic (MFC) luminogenic materials were prepared and found to exhibit outstanding mechanically-induced emission enhancement (MIEE) by virtue of substituent and position effects. Such materials can be used in OLED devices.
This report compiles a list of commercial and developmental niobium-based alloys developed during the Space Age (late 1950s through mid-1970s) for extreme-temperature applications, including rocket engine thrust chambers, hypersonic re-entry thermal protection systems, and space fission reactor loops. Niobium (Nb) was widely pursued because it provided the lowest density (~8.6 g/cc) among the primary refractory metals, a high melting temperature (~2470°C), exceptional low-temperature ductility, good formability, and compatibility with liquid alkali metals. An evaluation of physical metallurgy mechanisms, focusing on solid-solution strengthening via heavy refractory solutes (W, Mo, Ta), dual-purpose reactive solutes (Hf, Zr, Ti), and dispersion strengthening using carbides, nitrides, and oxides is presented. Additionally, the report compares Western and Soviet Union metallurgical approaches, explaining how supply chain factors and manufacturing infrastructure influenced element selection, interstitial chemistry, and alloy identification/naming conventions. Cataloging these historical alloy chemical compositions serves as a foundational reference for modern alloy additive manufacturing, thermodynamic CALPHAD modeling, and machine-learning discovery pipelines for next-generation extreme-environment niobium-based alloys.
