Radiation source and detection system for measuring amount of liquid inside tanks independently of liquid configuration
Experiments in which dihydroxyacetone (DHA) was used as nutrient for growing rats have not fulfilled the expectation that DHA could be used as a significant portion of the diet. Any attempt to treat major cerebral damage by prolonged administration of DHA is strongly contraindicated. For this reason, regenerated formose mixtures containing appreciable amounts of DHA will not be suitable as a significant portion of the diet for the crews of long-duration space missions.
Oxygen was added to T-111 (Ta-8W-2Hf, wt. %) at 820 and 990 C at an oxygen pressure of about 0.0003 torr. The technique employed permitted predetermined and reproducible doping of T-111 up to 3.0 at. % oxygen. Based on the temperature dependence of the doping reaction, it is concluded that the initial rates of oxygen pickup are probably controlled by solution of oxygen into the T-111 lattice. Although hafnium oxides are more stable than those of tantalum or tungsten, analyses of extracted residues indicate that the latter oxides predominate in the as-doped specimens, presumably because of the higher concentrations of tantalum and tungsten in the alloy. However, high-temperature annealing promotes gettering of dissolved oxygen and of other oxides to form hafnium oxides. Small amounts of tantalum and tungsten oxides were still present after high-temperature annealing. Tungsten oxide (WO3) volatilizes slightly from the surface of T-111 at 990 C. The vaporization of WO3 has no apparent affect on the doping reaction.
A technique is described that uses scene reflectivity derived from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) measurements from aboard the Nimbus-7 satellite to improve the estimation of cloud amounts from the data taken by the Temperature Humidity IR Radiometer (THIR) onboard the same satellite. TOMS operates in six 1 nm wide spectral bands in the UV (380, 360, 340, 331, 318, and 313 nm) and provides information for inference of directional albedos. Moreover, the features of the TOMS images are paralleled with those obtained by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GEOS) visible images. It is noted that by use of such a multisensor approach relatively thin or broken low clouds (below 2 km) can be detected with an rms error of about 10 percent when compared to the GOES visible and IR images.
The photometric determination for boron trioxide is described in amounts of 0-75 micrograms B2O3 with an azomethin H reagent. The yellow colored complex which occurs in a medium held at a pH of 4.5 was measured in light of a wavelength of 415 nm.
Published total vertical column amounts of carbon monoxide deduced from infrared solar spectra recorded during 1950-51 in the Swiss Alps have been reanalyzed based on improved spectroscopic parameters for CO and a curve of growth. From a comparison of the 1950-51 results and modern measurements, an average increase of about 2 percent per year in the free tropospheric concentration of CO above Europe is estimated for 1950-77.
The pattern of heavy rainfall in the Tibet Plateau area is usually preceded by a high growth rate of the convective clouds followed by a rapid collapse of the cloud top as observed on satellite infrared remote images. This study shows that the amount of rainfall can be estimated from the volumetric dissipation of clouds per unit area passing through the area of interest. This study also shows that the ratio of ground observed rainfall over the volumetric dissipation of clouds per unit area is constant for relatively heavier rainfall, and is smaller for very light rainfall. This is due to the fact that the lighter rainfall consumes higher percentage of rain drops in evaporation before they reach the ground.
The amount of water released on Mars in association with volcanism is estimated to equal a layer 46 meters deep over the entire planet. Most of this water was released in the first 2 billion years of Martian history. The estimate is based on mapping the volcanic materials and by inferring the volatile content of the lavas. Water from other sources, such as plutonic activity and cometary contributions, is not included in the estimate.
Total ozone amounts derived from the NOAA operational sounder (TOVS) are compared to measurements from Nimbus-7 SBUV and ground-based Dobson spectrophotometer observations over a seven-year period. The global trends of the data, in terms of deviations from long-term averages, derived from measurements by each satellite instrument show qualitative agreement until mid-1984 when the data diverge with the TOVS-derived data showing higher values. Additionally, more significant differences appear in both the north and south temperate zones' records. The trends derived from the satellite systems' measurements also show differences from that of the Dobson instrument measurements with the trend of the TOVS measurements showing generally better overall agreement with the Dobson data record.
The discovery of Farman et al. of recent large depletions of ozone in the Antarctic stratosphere in the austral spring has aroused great interest because of its serious potential consequences, as well as its surprising nature. An airborne expedition, including 21 experiments on two aircraft, was mounted for Punta Arenas, Chile, in August and September, 1987, to gather a wide range of data to understand the origins and implications of this phenomenon, known as the ozone hole. As a part of this expedition, a high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer was flown on the DC-8, measuring the column amount of a number of trace gases above the flight altitude. Column results are presented only from the flight of September 21; results from other flights are included in an accompanying paper. The deduced column for ozone HCl, and NO2 deduced from the spectra, plotted as a function of latitude are shown. It should be noted that there are many other factors varying as well as the latitude, but latitude seems to be the variable which most clearly provides a passage across the vortex boundary. It can be seen that south 76 degrees S., the column of ozone, HCl, and NO2, all decreas markedly, The ratio of HCl to Hf, normally about 5:1 in midlatitudes, approaches unity. Clearly the chemistry of chlorine and nitrogen are disturbed in the region of low ozone. While dynamical theories could perhaps explain a reduction of these three gases in the same region, since all are of stratospheric origin, it is difficult to see how any purely dynamical mechanism could produce the observed HCl:HF ratio, since the two gases have similar origins. A close look at other species to be reported as well as the correlation with other measurements, such as ClO supports the conclusion that the ozone depletion is a result of chemical processes which deplete HCl and NOx relative to the midlatitude situation.
Infrared solar spectra were obtained from the ground at McMurdo, Antarctica, during September and October 1987. Absorption features due to HNO3 and HCl have been analyzed to determine the vertical column content of these compounds for the days when observations were made. The variation of these column amounts with time is presented and discussed.
An estimate is made of the volume of plateau material removed from the area of Martian fretted terrain between 270 W and 360 W. Depending on the model chosen for the former extent of plateau, between 0.5 and 3.3 million cubic km have been removed. This corresponds to a global equivalent layer between 3 and 21 m or a lowland equivalent layer between 9 and 60 m of redistributed sediment. The preferred model is at the lower end of this range. The material could have been removed during a relatively short period of Martian history by aeolian abrasion following in situ weathering. The volume of material is an order of magnitude smaller than the total amount likely to be present in the northern lowlands.
The temperature structure and dust loading of the Martian atmosphere are investigated using thermal emission spectra recorded in 1972 by the Mariner 9 infrared interferometer spectrometer (IRIS). The analysis focuses on a subset of data consisting of approximately 2400 spectra obtained near the end of the southern summer season (L(sub s) equal to 343 deg to 348 deg), after the global dust storm had largely abated and airborne dust amounts were subsiding to background values. Simultaneous retrieval of the vertical distribution of both atmospheric temperature and dust optical depth is accomplished through an iterative procedure which is performed on each individual spectrum. The atmospheric transmittances are calculated using a Voigt quasi-random band model, which includes absorption by CO2 and dust, but neglects the effects of multiple scattering. Vertical profiles of temperature and dust optical depth are obtained using modified algorithms. These profiles are used to construct global maps of temperature and dust optical depth as functions of latitude (+/- 90 deg), altitude (approximately 0-50 km), and local time of day.
We present an x-ray spectral study of 12 distant (z = 0.17-0.54) rich clusters of galaxies observed with the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter. These x-ray spectral data show evidence for substantial excess absorptions beyond those expected in the galaxy, indicating the presence of large amounts of x-ray absorbing cool gas in these distant clusters. The mean value of the excess absorptions corresponds to an absorbing gas column density approximately greater than 10(exp 21)/sq cm. We calculate the x-ray luminosities of the clusters with observed fluxes only in the 0.8-3.5 keV band where the fluxes are less effected by the absorptions, and use the temperature-to-luminosity correlation (known only for nearby clusters) to estimate the temperatures of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) in the distant clusters. These temperature estimates, together with the spectral fits, provide further constraints on the column densities in the individual clusters. For the cluster CL 0016+16, the lower limit on the column density is found to be 8 x 10(exp 20)/sq cm at the 99 percent confidence limit. We also show that the ratio of the temperature obtained from the spectral fit to the temperature expected from the correlation tends to decrease with increasing look-back time, indicating possible temperature evolution of the hot ICM in the recent past. The inclusion of this evolutionary effect further increases the absorptions required in fitting the spectra.
This report presents the results of flight tests made to determine the lateral control characteristics of short wide ailerons and spoilers, as a consequence of the promise shown in wind-tunnel tests by these devices as means of obtaining lateral control, particularly at angles of attack above the stall. Several forms of spoilers, front-hinge, rear-hinge, plain retractable, and saw-tooth retractable were tested alone and in combination with the ailerons. The tests were made with several different amounts of wing dihedral so that the effect of the yawing moments of the different lateral control combinations, which varied from large negative to large positive values, could be evaluated. In conjunction with the tests, observations were made to throw some light on the feasibility of operating the airplane with two controls instead of the present three.
Absolute measurements of UV-irradiances in Germany and New Zealand are used to determine the total amounts of ozone. UV-irradiances measured and calculated for clear skies and for solar zenith angles less than 60 deg generally show a good accordance. The UVB-irradiances, however, show that the actual Dobson values are about 5 percent higher in Germany and about 3 percent higher in New Zealand compared to those obtained by our method. Possible reasons for these deviations are discussed.
Infrared diffuse reflectance spectra (2.53-25 microns) of some carbonaceous (C) chondrites were measured. The integrated intensity of the absorption bands near 3 microns caused by hydrous minerals were compared with the modal content of hydrous minerals for the meteorites. The CM and CI chondrites show larger values of the intergated intensity than those of the unique C chondrites Y82162, Y86720 and B7904, suggesting that the amount of hydrous minerals in the CM and CI chondrites is larger, which supports the contention that hydrous minerals were dehydrated by thermal metamorphism in the unique chondrites. Orgueil (CI) has the largest value of the integrated intensity among the C chondrites we measured and shows a sharp absorption band at 3685/cm (2.71 microns) that is not seen in the spectra of the CM chondrites. There is an excellent correlation between the observed hydrogen content in C chondrites and the integrated intensity. The CM chondrites show a wide variation in the strength of absorption bands at 1470/cm (6.8 microns), despite the similarity in absorption features near 3 micron for all CM chondites. The 1470/cm band could be due to the presence of some hydrocarbons but may also be a result of terrestrial alteration processes.
These observing system simulation experiments investigate the assimilation of satellite-observed water vapor and cloud liquid water data in the initialization of a limited-area primitive equations model with the goal of improving short-range precipitation forecasts. The assimilation procedure presented includes two aspects: specification of an initial cloud liquid water vertical distribution and diabatic initialization. The satellite data is simulated for the next generation of polar-orbiting satellite instruments, the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and the High-Resolution Infrared Sounder (HIRS), which are scheduled to be launched on the NOAA-K satellite in the mid-1990s. Based on cloud-top height and total column cloud liquid water amounts simulated for satellite data a diagnostic method is used to specify an initial cloud water vertical distribution and to modify the initial moisture distribution in cloudy areas. Using a diabatic initialization procedure, the associated latent heating profiles are directly assimilated into the numerical model. The initial heating is estimated by time averaging the latent heat release from convective and large-scale condensation during the early forecast stage after insertion of satellite-observed temperature, water vapor, and cloud water formation. The assimilation of satellite-observed moisture and cloud water, together withy three-mode diabatic initialization, significantly alleviates the model precipitation spinup problem, especially in the first 3 h of the forecast. Experimental forecasts indicate that the impact of satellite-observed temperature and water vapor profiles and cloud water alone in the initialization procedure shortens the spinup time for precipitation rates by 1-2 h and for regeneration of the areal coverage by 3 h. The diabatic initialization further reduces the precipitation spinup time (compared to adiabatic initialization) by 1 h.
