Criticality Safety SU based USL Calculation for UCl3-NaCl Fuel Salt Operations

The Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) is a fast spectrum, molten salt fueled reactor that is planned to be constructed and operated in the Laboratory for Operation and Testing in the U.S. (LOTUS) testbed, formerly known as the ZPPR cell, at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). MCRE will provide valuable data to support design, licensing, and operation of full scale commercialized molten salt reactor designs.

Rossi-α measurements on a system consisting of weapons grade plutonium moderated by polyethylene

A critical experiment was performed on the Planet critical assembly to provide nuclear data in a thermal neutron spectrum, in particular to provide experimental data to help validate thermal scattering laws for polyethylene. The fuel consisted of layers of weapons grade plutonium plates that were moderated and reflected by various thicknesses of high density polyethylene. Rossi-α measurements were performed on a slightly modified configuration from the configuration used for the critical measurements. The Rossi-α measurement techniques are discussed and results are presented. The neutron spectrum appears to be extremely thermal when compared to other thermal systems and the configuration will be able to validate thermal scattering law.

The Jupiter Experiments: High-240 Plutonium Metal Plates Separated by Lead and Reflected by Copper

Each layer consisted of a 6 by 6 matrix of either these fuel-filled containers or solid blocks of copper of the same outer dimensions. An example of this arrangement, along with one of the copper inner reflectors, is shown in Figure 1.4. This figure shows the same aluminum containers from Figure 1.3 but with the aluminum containers completely closed. The lifting rings shown on the copper inner reflector were only for assembly and were not present for the measurement (in which the holes were filled with copper plugs). Figure 1.5 shows the loading arrangement of the aluminum containers, along with aluminum shims around the container arrays to ensure a tight fit between these layers and the surrounding reflectors. All plates were in the same orientation; none were rotated in any fashion. Additional loading information for the PAHN plates and plate loading respective to the room entrance are provided in Figures 1.6 and 1.7, respectively.

Preliminary Chlorine Worth Study Benchmark Evaluation

The Chlorine Worth Studies (CWS) experiments with polyvinyl chloride (PVC with chemical formula (C 2 H 3 Cl) n ), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC with chemical formula (C 9 H 11 Cl 7 ) n ), and high density polyethylene (HDPE with chemical formula (CH 2 ) n ) were a series of measurements performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). The purpose of the CWS experiments was to perform integral experiments that were highly sensitive to the thermal 35 Cl(n,γ) reaction and matched the sensitivities of aqueous chloride operations at the plutonium facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The CWS experiments were performed on the Planet critical assembly machine at NCERC and utilized weapons grade plutonium (WGPu) plates as fuel. The design process and design of the CWS experiment were discussed previously. This paper discusses the benchmark evaluation of the experiment, intended for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP). Criticality calculations were performed with MCNP version 6.3. Results presented here are preliminary, as the benchmark has not yet been submitted to the ICSBEP.

Design Optimization for EUROPA Critical Experiment

The Experiment for Unresolved Region Of Plutonium Actinides (EUROPA) is an integral critical experiment currently being designed to target the intermediate energy region of plutonium. Intermediate energies, those between 0.625 eV - 100 keV, contain the end of resolved and beginning of the unresolved resonance region, making experiments in this energy range prudent for validating the representation of cross sections in this transition region. Below is the preliminary design of the experiment to be performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). Experiment optimization required an exhaustive down selection of several moderating, absorbing, and reflecting materials using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in order to achieve maximum sensitivity to the intermediate energy region.

Verifying MCNP Models of the TEX High 240 Plutonium Benchmark

Computational modeling programs are invaluable tools that allow us to understand systems, safely develop new processes, and make reliable predictions about future designs. However, the effectiveness of these codes is limited by the degree to which their parameters match the real world. In the field of nuclear engineering, cross section data is one of these vital parameters. Accurate cross section data on important fissile and fissionable isotopes promotes the design of safer and more efficient fabrication, transportation, storage, and stockpiling of nuclear fuel. Unfortunately, there are knowledge gaps in data on key isotopes. In 2011, a multinational meeting hosted by the US Department of Energy Nuclear Criticality Safety Program ranked the priority of certain cross section data needs. In response, Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) designed the Thermal and Epithermal eXperiment (TEX) series of benchmark experiments. Benchmark experiments are used to validate current cross section data. They validate data by comparing the results of an actual experiment to the predicted results from a computational model. The data a benchmark applies to depends on the isotope and energy range the experiment’s neutron multiplication factor ( k eff ) is most sensitive to. The development and testing of the TEX High 240 Plutonium Benchmark will help validate 240 Pu cross section data. The configuration and materials of this benchmark are designed to be most sensitive to 240 Pu's intermediate energy range (from 0.625 ev to 100 keV ). MCNP® models of the assembly have been developed by LLNL and the results have been written in the final design report. In order for the discrepancies between benchmark models and experiments to be attributed to cross section inaccuracies, the accuracy of the models needs to be verified. The goal of this project is to verify of the results of LLNL's modeling by creating a new set of MCNP models and comparing the results.
