Adsorption of Rare Earth Elements onto DNA-Functionalized Mesoporous Carbon

The recovery and separation of rare earth elements (REEs) are of national importance owing to the specific usages, high demand, and low supply of these elements. In this research, we have investigated the adsorption of rare earth elements onto DNA-functionalized mesoporous carbons with a BET surface area of 605 m2/g and a median mesopore width of 48 Å. Additionally, three types of single-stranded DNA, one with 100 base units of thymine, another with 20 units of thymine, and the third, a 2000 unit long DNA from salmon milt were grafted on the carboxylated mesoporous carbon surface. All of the DNA-functionalized mesoporous carbons demonstrated higher adsorption of REEs compared to pristine mesoporous carbon and DNA grafted with 100 units of thymine demonstrated slightly higher adsorbed amounts compared to others. Pure neodymium (Nd(III)) adsorption in the aqueous phase demonstrated an adsorbed amount of 110.4 mg/g with respect to the initial concentration of 500 mg/g. A pH variation study with pure Nd(III) demonstrated that the adsorbed amount is higher at elevated pH compared to that at lower pH, thereby suggesting possible recovery at lower pH. Adsorption of a mixture of 16 REEs, including Sc, Lu, Tm, Yb, Er, Ho, Tb, Dy, Y, Eu, Gd, Sm, Ce, Nd, Pr, and La revealed that the adsorbed amount increased with an increase in the atomic weight and metallic radii of elements within the lanthanides. The calculation of the distribution coefficients for all of the equilibrium adsorption amounts suggested that adsorption is more effective in the lower concentration region. The Nd L3-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) confirmed a 3+ oxidation state of Nd in the adsorbed phase. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) confirmed the local atomic structure relaxation of Nd complexes in the adsorbed phase and shortening of the Nd–O bond distance by about 0.03–0.04 Å, which may be associated with their local complexation at the carbon surface.

Inverse-Designed Photonics for Semiconductor Foundries

Silicon photonics is becoming a leading technology in photonics, displacing traditional fiber optic transceivers and enabling new applications. Further improving the density and performance of silicon photonics, however, has been challenging due to the large size and limited performance of traditional semianalytically designed components. Automated optimization of photonic devices using inverse design is a promising path forward but has, until now, faced difficulties in producing designs that can be fabricated reliably at scale. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate four inverse-designed devices made successfully in a commercial silicon photonics foundry: a spatial mode multiplexer, wavelength demultiplexer, 50–50 directional coupler, and 3-way power splitter. These devices are efficient, robust to fabrication variability, and compact, with footprints only a few micrometers across. They pave the way forward for the widespread practical use of inverse design.

A new observational and numerical study of tidal interactions in M81-M82-NGC3077 system

A nearby system of interacting galaxies M81-M82-NGC3077 triplet (D = 3.3 Mpc; Freeman & Madore 1988) has been studied using multi-wavelength observations and numerical simulations to obtain a comprehensive understanding on the dynamics and the consequences of tidal interactions in a group environment. The VLA 12-field Mosaic H I observations of 2 x 1.5 deg. region have revealed a vast array of H I filaments which suggests that the severity and extent of tidal disruptions far exceed the previous estimates. A tidal remnant of the former H I disk of M82 extending up to 30 kpc (in projection) is identified for the first time, and the pervasive effects of the tidal disruption are traced into the inner disk by optical and CO observations, including a kinematic trace of a large scale bar potential (Yun, Ho, & Lo 1992). The H I disk of M81 is traced out to 40 kpc in radius, and a large scale (l approx. 20 kpc) velocity anomaly ('High Velocity Trough'), which may be a remnant of a gaseous collision, is found within the disk of M81. The large H I bridge between M81 and NGC 3077 (van der Hulst 1979) is also found to extend approx. greater than 50 kpc further, bending around NGC 3077, toward M82. The total H I detected in this experiment, 5.6 x 10(exp 9) solar mass, represents the majority of the single-dish flux (Appleton, Davies, & Stephenson 1981) and suggests that the bulk of H I found in the region belongs to the three galaxies and the tidal filaments. The impact and details of the tidal interactions have been further examined through the use of numerical techniques. The 'restricted 3-body' approach was used to simulate the observed distribution of tidal H I streamers connecting the three galaxies, and the success of the simulation is further strengthened by the accurate predictions on the gas kinematics.

Coupled Chemical and Mechanical Control of Phase Stability in Lanthanide-Substituted BiVO 4

Doping is widely used to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO 4 , yet solubility limits and polymorphic stability constrain compositional tuning. Here, in this study, the role of trivalent cation substitution (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Ho, Y) on pressure-induced phase transformations in Bi 1–x Ln x VO 4 (x ≤ 0.5) is described. Powder X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal that increasing Ln content stabilizes the tetragonal zircon-type polymorph under ambient conditions, while applied pressures of up to ∼5 GPa promote conversion to the monoclinic fergusonite-type polymorph. In-situ neutron diffraction on Bi 0.8 La 0.2 VO 4 shows a reversible monoclinic to tetragonal transition near 2–3 GPa with a bulk modulus of 147 GPa. The extent of conversion depends strongly on dopant identity, concentration, and synthetic route, with mixed-phase solid-state samples converting more efficiently than phase-pure coprecipitated materials. These results demonstrate pressure as a viable pathway to access metastable, doped BiVO 4 compositions beyond conventional solubility limits.

Collision strengths for 1199 and 1729 of S III

Collision strengths are calculated for the S III ground state from electron impact excitation in the Io torus. The study is based on data taken at 119.9 nm and 172.9 nm by the IUE spacecraft and with the rocket-borne Faint Object Telescope. The collision strengths of the 3p(2)3P3s3p(3)(5)S(4) and (3)P-3s3p(3)(3)D(0) UV lines are derived from a three-state close coupling aproximation. A Gailitis averaging scheme accounts for resonance effects in the forbidden transition. The calculated intensities of the two transitions at an electron temperature of 80,000 K are in agreement with observed intensities.

Study on the Carbon Nanostructures for Nanosized Si Electrodes

Silicon (Si) has been considered as a next-generation anode material due to natural abundance, low operating potential (<0.5 V vs. Li/Li+), and high theoretical specific capacity of 4200 mAh g-1.[1] However, the electrochemical alloying reaction of Si involves large volume changes of 400% during lithiation and delithiation, causing cracking and pulverization of Si.[1] In addition, solid electrolyte interface (SEI) of Si anode experiences constant changes due to unstable SEI reactivity.[2] Considerable efforts have been made to design nanostructured Si materials to address the issues because nanostructuring can relieve the mechanical strain.[3] However, when compared to micrometer-sized active materials having sufficient electrolyte pathway through interparticle space, the nanoparticle (NP)-based electrodes tend to be densely packed. As mass loading is higher and electrode is thicker, ion transport issue can become more severe in the densely packed electrodes.[4] In this work, we will present studies on engineered porosity impacts performance in Si NP electrodes by altering carbon nanostructures. We explore the extreme limit of effectively non-porous electrodes using quasi-spherical, Si NPs, which result in densely packed electrodes when slurry is prepared with conventional carbon black. We engineer porosity using carbon nanostructures including multi-walled carbon nanotubes and carbon nanorods in place of conventional carbon black to create pore structure in Si NP-based electrodes. These experiments provide a correlation between mass loading, porosity and silicon utilization in Si NP-based electrodes. References: [1] C. K. Chan, H. Peng, G. Liu, K. Mcllwrath, X. F. Zhang, R. A. Probing Ice-Rule-Breaking Transition in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 Thin Film by Proximitized Transport and Magnetic Torque

While the spin-ice state of bulk pyrochlores such as Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Ho 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 has been extensively studied in the past several decades due to its unique degenerate ground state and emergent monopole excitation, whether it survives in the thin-film form remains a mystery. The limited volume of the thin-film sample makes it challenging to study the intrinsic magnetic properties. Here, we synthesized 18-nm-thick Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 thin film on yttria-stabilized zirconia with 9.5 mol% Y 2 ⁢O 3 substrate and capped it by a thin conductive Bi 2 ⁢Ir 2 ⁢O 7 layer and performed the proximitized magnetoresistance measurements. Our Letter found that the ice-rule-breaking phase transition survives but with a modified effective nearest-neighbor interaction (𝐽 eff =1.054 K) and distorted Ising spin axes (𝜀 = +0.051) compared to the bulk crystal. Furthermore, the results are supported by the simultaneously measured capacitive torque magnetometry. Our Letter demonstrates that proximitized transport is an effective tool for thin films of insulating frustrated magnets.

Crystal and Magnetic Structures of the Ternary Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 Compounds: An Example of Intermetallics Crystallizing with the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P Prototype

We report two new rare-earth (R) ternary intermetallic compounds—Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with T = Si and Ge—that correspond to the R 5 Ni 2 T 3 phase earlier reported to form in Dy–Ni–T and Ho–Ni–T ternary systems. The compounds crystallize in a filled version of the orthorhombic Zr 2 Ni 1–x P-type structure with x = 0.52; their stoichiometry, determined from both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, is centered on Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with a narrow solid solubility range for the silicide, while the germanide appears to be a line phase. In addition to R = Dy and Ho, R 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 compounds also form for R = Y and Tb, representing the first examples of rare-earth-based compounds adopting the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P structural prototype. Bulk magnetization data reveal the main transitions of the ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic type at TC = 38 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and TC = 37 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 , which are followed by subsequent magnetic reordering at lower temperatures. Neutron diffraction shows complex magnetic structures below T C with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components and magnetic propagation vector κ 1 = [0, 0, 0]. Below T N ≅ 24 K (22 K) for the silicide (germanide), an additional antiferromagnetic coupling following an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector κ 2 = [κ x , 0, 0] appears to coexist with the first magnetic structure.

The power of lanthanides: same composition, but different lanthanides leading to different interesting materials properties, from magnetocalorics to molecular magnets and phosphors

Commonly accepted design concepts for ionic liquids (ILs) state that the constituting ions must be large and carry low, well-dispersed charges. A series of ILs based of pentadeca charged ILs with pentanuclear linear {Ln 5 } units ([Ln 5 (C 2 H 5 -C 3 H 3 N 2 -CH 2 COO) 16 (H 2 O) 8 ](Tf 2 N) 15 (C 3 H 3 N 2 = imidazolium moiety, Tf 2 N = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide) with Ln = Er, Ho, Tm) demonstrates that these criteria are not absolute. Highly charged ions can also support IL formation, provided they are sufficiently large. Expanding the series of these unconventional, record pentadeca charged with new lanthanide representatives, led to the discovery of additional unprecedented properties for ILs: The Gd compound exhibits a strong magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the liquid state with a maximum magnetic entropy change of −ΔS M = −11 J⋅kg −1 ⋅K −1 at 2 K for Δμ 0 H = 7 T. Albeit the Dy representative shows slow magnetic relaxation, the relaxation times are not favorable for practical application as a molecular magnet. Lastly, for both the Gd and the Y compound, phosphorescence in the seconds time scale is observed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the longest ever reported for an IL.

Magnetic structure of magnetoelectric multiferroic HoFeWO 6

The polar magnetic oxide, HoFeWO6, is synthesized, and its crystal structure, magnetic structure, and thermodynamic properties are investigated. HoFeWO 6 forms the polar crystal structure (space group Pna2 1 (#33)) due to the cation ordering of W 6+ and Fe 3+ . An antiferromagnetic transition at T N = 17 K is accompanied by a significant change in magnetic entropy with a value of ≈ 5 J kg -1 K-1 in a 70 kOe applied field. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that the Fe sublattice orders in a strongly non-collinear and non-coplanar arrangement below T N . The Fe ordering initially leads to induced ordering of the Ho spins such that the Ho spins also show behavior of long-range ordering that is evident from the neutron diffraction measurements. Below T ≈ 4 K, the Ho spins order independently and pull the Fe spins toward the direction of Ho spins. A comparison with the magnetic structures and corresponding ferroelectric properties of other members of RMWO 6 (R = Y, Sm-Tm, M = Cr, Fe, V) family indicate that the spontaneous polarization is due to the magnetic structure specific to the Fe sublattice through magnetoelectric coupling whereas the polarization is independent of the Ho sublattice.

Aircraft NO/x/ emissions and stratospheric ozone reductions - Another look

New estimates for stratospheric ozone perturbations attributable to supersonic transport (SST) emissions are presented. First, a review is given of recent data pointing to lower OH concentrations below 30 km, as compared to the values predicted by photochemical models. The evidence for lower OH comes from a wide range of laboratory and atmospheric studies. The sensitivity of theoretical estimates of ozone change to OH abundances, and the coupling mechanisms between the O(x)-NO(x)-HO(x)-Cl(x) families which are responsible for the sensitivity, are discussed. Updated calculations for SST-induced ozone alterations are compared with older predictions. For example, assuming continuous aircraft injection of NO2 at 20 km at a rate of 1 x 10 to the 9th kg per year (globally), a 4% ozone decrease, is now calculated where earlier a 3% ozone increase was found. This large variance from previous forecasts suggests that new assessments of certain other polluting agents, particularly nitrogen fertilizers, are needed.

Tuning the Radius Ratio to Enhance Thermoelectric Properties in the Zintl Compounds AM 2 Sb 2 (A = Ba, Sr; M = Zn, Cd)

Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.

Study of Magnetic Field and Turbulence in the TeV Halo around the Monogem Pulsar

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, including extended objects such as supernova remnants and diffuse halos around pulsars. Its turbulent characteristics govern the diffusion of cosmic rays and the multiwavelength emission from pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). However, the geometry and turbulence nature of the magnetic fields in the ambient region of PWN is still unknown. Recent gamma-ray observations from HAWC and synchrotron observations suggest a highly suppressed diffusion coefficient compared to the mean interstellar value. In this study, we present the first direct observational evidence of the orientation of the mean magnetic field and turbulent characteristics by employing a recently developed statistical parameter "Y turb " in the extended halo around the Monogem pulsar. Our study points to two possible scenarios: nearly aligned toward the line of sight (LOS) with compressible modes dominance or high inclination angle toward the LOS and characterized by Alfvénic turbulence. The first scenario appears consistent with other observational signatures. Furthermore, we report that the magnetic field has an observed correlation length of approximately 3 ± 0.6 pc in the Monogem halo. Our study highlights the pivotal role of magnetic field and turbulence in unraveling the physical processes in TeV halos and cosmic-ray transport.

Tungsten doped diamond shells for record neutron yield inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility

We report on fabrication and characterization of layered, tungsten doped, spherical about 2 mm diameter microcrystalline diamond ablator shells for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments at the National Ignition Facility. As previously reported, diamond ICF ablator shells can be fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on solid spherical silicon mandrels using an ellipsoidal microwave plasma reactor. In the present work, we further developed these ablator shells by embedding a W -doped diamond layer sandwiched between two undoped diamond regions. W incorporation in diamond was achieved by adding tungsten hexacarbonyl to the CH 4 /H 2 CVD feed gas. We observe that the W doping concentration decreases with increasing deposition rate which, in turn, is controlled by adjusting the total gas pressure. Cross sectional microstructural analysis reveals sharp interfaces between doped and undoped regions of the diamond shell and uniform W distribution with concentrations up to about 0.3 at.%. At higher W concentrations (>0.3 at.%) formation of tungsten carbide precipitates is observed. Using a 3-shock 1.6 MJ laser pulse, the targets described in this work produced the first laser driven implosion to break the 1 × 10 16 neutron yield barrier, followed by experiments (described in future publications) with similar targets and slightly more laser energy producing yields as high as 4 × 10 17 .

Mechanism and Kinetics of Ethanol–Acetaldehyde Conversion to 1,3-Butadiene over Isolated Lewis Acid La Sites in Silanol Nests in Dealuminated Beta Zeolite

Biomass-derived ethanol (EtOH) and acetaldehyde (AcH) conversion to 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) is an alternative process for 1,3-BD production. The present investigation reports the preparation and characterization of isolated La sites introduced into the silanol nests in DeAlBEA as well as detailed studies of the mechanism and kinetics for the conversion of an EtOH-AcH mixture to 1,3-BD. La sites supported on DeAlBEA are found to be present as (≡SiO) 2 La-OH groups that are H-bonded with adjacent Si-OH groups, possessing high C-C coupling activity and stability, superior to state-of-the-art Y-DeAlBEA. La sites supported on silica (La-SiO 2 ) with a similar chemical structure but no H-bonding interaction with Si-OH groups were prepared for comparison. Lewis acid La sites promote AcH aldol condensation, and the activity of such sites is nearly identical for both La-DeAlBEA and La-SiO 2 . Further, the rate of C 4 product formation increases by a factor of 4.8 upon addition of EtOH to the feed of AcH over La-DeAlBEA, whereas that over La/SiO 2 remains unchanged. Investigation of the mechanism and kinetics of AcH aldol condensation and EtOH-AcH conversion to 1,3-BD revealed two C-C bond forming pathways-AcH aldol condensation by Lewis acid La sites and direct coupling of EtOH-AcH over H-bonded (≡SiO) 2 La-OH···HO-Si≡ sites. This study provides important information about the role of the local environment of isolated Lewis acid sites and their effects on the direct coupling of EtOH and AcH to form 1,3-BD.

Colossal oxygen vacancy formation at a fluorite-bixbyite interface

Oxygen vacancies in complex oxides are indispensable for information and energy technologies. There are several means to create oxygen vacancies in bulk materials. However, the use of ionic interfaces to create oxygen vacancies has not been fully explored. As such, we report an oxide nanobrush architecture designed to create high-density interfacial oxygen vacancies. An atomically well-defined (111) heterointerface between the fluorite CeO 2 and the bixbyite Y 2 O 3 is found to induce a charge modulation between Y 3+ and Ce 4+ ions enabled by the chemical valence mismatch between the two elements. Local structure and chemical analyses, along with theoretical calculations, suggest that more than 10% of oxygen atoms are spontaneously removed without deteriorating the lattice structure. Our fluorite–bixbyite nanobrush provides an excellent platform for the rational design of interfacial oxide architectures to precisely create, control, and transport oxygen vacancies critical for developing ionotronic and memristive devices for advanced energy and neuromorphic computing technologies.
