Multinonmetal-Doped V 2 O 5 Nanocomposites for Lithium-Ion Battery Cathodes

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are critical for portable electronics and electric vehicles, demanding higher energy density to meet increasing energy storage needs. Current commercial cathode materials, such as LiFePO 4 and LiCoO 2 , are limited by a single electron transfer, restricting their energy density. Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) emerges as a promising high-capacity cathode due to its high theoretical capacity of 443 mA h g –1 with three Li storage capacities, significantly surpassing conventional materials. However, the practical application of V 2 O 5 is hindered by a large structural evolution and rapid capacity fading during full lithium intercalation. Here, this study introduces a multinonmetal doping (MNM) strategy to enhance V 2 O 5 cathodes by incorporating all-nonmetal dopants (B, P, and Si) and graphene (G). MNM-V 2 O 5 -G exhibits increased surface oxygen defects, improving charge transfer kinetics and thus enhancing the rate performance and cycling stability. Our results provide valuable insights into the role of surface oxygen defects in stabilizing V 2 O 5 with element doping. This research highlights the potential of multinonmetal doping to improve LIB cathode materials, offering a promising pathway for design of high-energy-density V 2 O 5 cathodes and advancing the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.

Oxygen Vacancy Evolution at Li x V 2 O 5 /LiPON Solid State Electrochemical Interfaces Using Depth Resolved Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy

The formation of oxygen vacancies at buried LiPON/ Li x V 2 O 5 interfaces has been observed on a near-nanometer scale and nondestructively using depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (DRCLS) and interfacial markers. Before electrochemical cycling, as-deposited LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 exhibits a 1.6 eV defect optical emission, which density functional theory calculations identify as originating from oxygen vacancies. This defect appears first within a few nanometers of the buried LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 interface without cycling, indicating that spontaneous O diffusion from the Li x V 2 O 5 lattice into LiPON may have caused these interface-localized oxygen vacancy defects. DRCLS measured the intensity and spatial distribution of this oxygen vacancy signal as a function of electrochemical cycling in a LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 half-cell, showing oxygen vacancy signal increasing and moving deeper into the electrode with increased cycle number. Significant electrochemical irreversibility was also observed, with poor Coulombic efficiency and a 15% drop in capacity over 50 cycles. Theoretical simulations predict that the presence of oxygen vacancies increases the energy barrier for lithium diffusion significantly, indicating that this aggregation of oxygen vacancies could be another battery degradation mechanism accompanying lithiation induced phase changes.

Synthesis, structural and electrochemical properties of V4O9 cathode for lithium batteries

Single-phase three-dimensional vanadium oxide (V 4 O 9 ) was synthesized by reduction of V 2 O 5 using a gas stream of ammonia/argon (NH 3 /Ar). The as-synthesized oxide, prepared by this simple gas reduction method was subsequently electrochemically transformed into a disordered rock salt type-“Li3.7V4O9” phase while cycling over the voltage window 3.5 to 1.8 V versus Li. The Li-deficient phase delivers an initial reversible capacity of ∼260 mAhg −1 at an average voltage of 2.5 V vs. Li + /Li 0 . Further cycling to 50 cycles yields a steady 225 mAhg −1 . Ex situ X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that (de) intercalation phenomena follows a solid-solution electrochemical reaction mechanism. As demonstrated, the reversibility and capacity utilization of this V 4 O 9 is found to be superior to battery grade, micron-sized V 2 O 5 cathodes in lithium cells.

Effect of the Deposition of Vanadium-Oxide on the Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 Nanotubes and Its Photodiode Performance Interfaced with CH3NH3PbI3 Single Crystal

In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.
