Search for the lepton-flavor-violating τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − , where ℓ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 428 fb −1 recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events containing a signal candidate is based on an inclusive-tagging reconstruction and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. Upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.3 and 2.5 × 10 −8 are set at the 90% confidence level. These results are the most stringent bounds to date for four of the modes.

Search for the Anomalous Events Detected by ANITA Using the Pierre Auger Observatory

A dedicated search for upward-going air showers at zenith angles exceeding 110° and energies E > 0.1 EeV has been performed using the Fluorescence Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The search is motivated by two “anomalous” radio pulses observed by the ANITA flights I and III that appear inconsistent with the standard model of particle physics. Using simulations of both regular cosmic-ray showers and upward-going events, a selection procedure has been defined to separate potential upward-going candidate events and the corresponding exposure has been calculated in the energy range [0.1–33] EeV. One event has been found in the search period between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2018, consistent with an expected background of 0.27 ± 0.12 events from misreconstructed cosmic-ray showers. This translates to an upper bound on the integral flux of ( 7.2 ± 0.2 ) × 10 − 21 cm − 2 sr − 1 y − 1 and ( 3.6 ± 0.2 ) × 10 − 20 cm − 2 sr − 1 y − 1 for an E − 1 and E − 2 spectrum, respectively. An upward-going flux of showers normalized to the ANITA observations is shown to predict over 34 events for an E − 3 spectrum and over 8.1 events for a conservative E − 5 spectrum, in strong disagreement with the interpretation of the anomalous events as upward-going showers. Search for heavy long-lived charged particles with large ionization energy loss in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

Abstract A search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionization energy loss within the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment is presented. A data set of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, collected in 2017 and 2018 at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1, is used in this analysis. Two different approaches for the search are taken. A new method exploits the independence of the silicon pixel and strips measurements, while the second method improves on previous techniques using ionization to determine a mass selection. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of the pair production of supersymmetric particles, namely gluinos, top squarks, and tau sleptons, and of the Drell-Yan pair production of fourth generation (τ′) leptons with an electric charge equal to or twice the absolute value of the electron charge (e). An interpretation of a Z’ boson decaying to two τ′ leptons with an electric charge equal to 2e is presented for the first time. The 95% confidence upper limits on the production cross section are extracted for each of these hypothetical particles.

Search for a resonance decaying into a scalar particle and a Higgs boson in final states with leptons and two photons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a hypothetical heavy scalar particle, X, decaying into a singlet scalar particle, S, and a Standard Model Higgs boson, H, using 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at the centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The explored mass range is 300 ≤ m X ≤ 1000 GeV and 170 ≤ m S ≤ 500 GeV. The signature of this search is one or two leptons (e or μ) from the decay of vector bosons originating from the S particle, S → W ± W ∓ /ZZ, and two photons from the Higgs boson decay, H → γγ. No significant excess is observed above the expected Standard Model background. The observed (expected) upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the cross- section for gg → X → SH, assuming the same S → WW/ZZ branching ratios as for a SM-like heavy Higgs boson, are between 530 (800) fb and 120 (170) fb.

Search for the jet-induced diffusion wake in the quark-gluon plasma via measurements of jet-track correlations in photon-jet events in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of jet-track correlations in photon-jet events, using 1.72 nb −1 of Pb+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with energetic photon-jet pairs are selected, where the photon and jet are approximately back-to-back in azimuth. The angular correlation between jets and charged-particle tracks with transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) in the range 0.5–2.0 GeV in the hemisphere opposite to the jet, |Δ⁢𝜙(jet,track)|>𝜋/2, is measured as a function of their relative pseudorapidity difference, |Δ⁢𝜂(jet, track)|. In central Pb+Pb collisions, these correlations are predicted to be sensitive to the diffusion wake in the quark-gluon plasma resulting from the lost energy of high-𝑝T partons traversing the plasma, with a characteristic modification as a function of |Δ⁢𝜂(jet, track)|. The correlations are examined with different selections on the jet-to-photon 𝑝 T ratio to select events with different degrees of energy loss. No diffusion wake signal is observed within the current sensitivity and upper limits at 95% confidence level on the diffusion wake amplitude are reported.

Dataset for scientific paper "Simulated plant‑mediated oxygen input has strong impacts on fine‑scale porewater biogeochemistry and weak impacts on integrated methane fluxes in coastal wetlands", a modeling study based on field observation at the tidal salt marshes of the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, United States

This dataset is the raw and processed data for the paper "Simulated plant ‑ mediated oxygen input has strong impacts on fine ‑ scale porewater biogeochemistry and weak impacts on integrated methane fluxes in coastal wetlands". This study investigated how plant-mediated oxygen input affects subsurface biogeochemical reactions of organic carbon degradation and the resulting methane emissions of coastal wetlands by model simulation. We used the subsurface geochemical simulator PFLOTRAN for the modeling, which produced the simulated changes in porewater chemical substances and methane emissions over 10 days under different scenarios of plant-mediated oxygen input.Specifically, this dataset contains: 1) the input files for PFLOTRAN of all simulation runs conducted in this study. Those files are with an extension of ".in", containing information of the biogeochemical reaction network (stoichiometry, reaction rate, Monod constants, etc), fluid flow rate and oxygen concentration in the fluid which together simulated the plant-mediated oxygen input, the configuration of artificial reactions that simulated the methane fluxes, etc. The PFLOTRAN input files are text files, which can be opened by NotePad, but running these input files will require proper installation of PFLOTRAN (instruction: https://documentation.pflotran.org/user_guide/how_to/installation/installation.html). 2) the raw and processed model output from PFLOTRAN of all simulation runs, and 3) the python scripts used to process the raw model output, including random allocation of root cells, converting raw data into organized formats, calculating the methane fluxes based on the model output, data visualization, etc. The raw and processed model output from PFLOTRAN are in .spydata format, which can be viewed with Python. and 3) the python scripts for data processing and analysis are programming scripts, which can be opened with Python. This modeling work, in particular the model parameterization of root density and initial conditions of porewater concentrations of biogeochemical substances, was based on field measurements at the salt marsh of the Upper Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, United States.

Search for heavy resonances in final states with four leptons and missing transverse momentum or jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a new heavy boson produced via gluon-fusion in the four-lepton channel with missing transverse momentum or jets is performed. The search uses proton-proton collision data equivalent to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at the Large Hadron Collider. This study explores the decays of heavy bosons: R → SH and A → ZH, where R is a CP-even boson, A is a CP-odd boson, H is a CP-even boson, and S is considered to decay into invisible particles that are candidates for dark matter. In these processes, S → invisible and H → ZZ. The Z boson associated with the heavy scalar boson H decays into all decay channels of the Z boson. The mass range under consideration is 390–1300 (320–1300) GeV for the R (A) boson and 220–1000 GeV for the H boson. No significant deviation from the Standard Model backgrounds is observed. The results are interpreted as upper limits at a 95% confidence level on the cross-section times the branching ratio of the heavy resonances.

Search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson decaying into a pair of τ -leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports a search for a light CP-odd scalar resonance with a mass of 20 GeV to 90 GeV in 13 TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis assumes the resonance is produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decays into a $τ^+ τ^-$ pair which subsequently decays into a fully leptonic $µ^+ ν_µ \overline{ν}_τ e^- \overline{ν}_ e ν_τ$ or $e^+ ν_e \overline{ν}_τ µ^- \overline{ν}_µ ν_τ$ final state. No significant excess of events above the predicted Standard Model background is observed. The results are interpreted within a favour-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, and a model independent cross-section interpretation is also given. Upper limits at 95% confidence level between 3.0 pb and 68 pb are set on the cross-section for producing a CP-odd Higgs boson that decays into a $τ^+ τ^-$ pair.

Search for the baryon number and lepton number violating decays τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − at Belle II

We present a search for the baryon number B and lepton number L violating decays τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − produced from the e + e − → τ + τ − process, using a 364 fb − 1 data sample collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. No evidence of signal is found in either decay mode, which have | Δ ( B − L ) | equal to 2 and 0, respectively. Upper limits at 90% credibility level on the branching fractions of τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − are determined to be 4.7 × 10 − 8 and 4.3 × 10 − 8 , respectively. Search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos in the decay of top quarks produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos is performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, using the 140 fb -1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected during Run 2. This search targets $t\overline{t}$ production, in which both top quarks decay into a bottom quark and a W boson, where one of the W bosons decays hadronically and the other decays into an electron or muon and a heavy neutral lepton. The heavy neutral lepton is identified through a decay into an electron or muon and another W boson, resulting in a pair of same-charge same-flavor leptons in the final state. This paper presents the first search for heavy neutral leptons in the mass range of 15–75 GeV using $t\overline{t}$ events. No significant excess is observed over the background expectation, and upper limits are placed on the signal cross sections. Assuming a benchmark scenario of the phenomenological type-I seesaw model, these cross section limits are then translated into upper limits on the mixing parameters of the heavy Majorana neutrino with Standard Model neutrinos.

Search for the radiative transition χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 )

Using 9.0 f b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.178 to 4.278 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform the first search for the radiative transition χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 ) . No signal is observed and the upper limit on the ratio of branching fractions B ( χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 ) , ψ 2 ( 3823 ) → γ χ c 1 ) / B ( χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ) is set at 0.075 at the 90% confidence level. Our result contradicts theoretical predictions under the assumption that the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) is the pure charmonium state χ c 1 ( 2 P ) . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ – → μ – μ + μ – decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ – → μ – μ + μ – using a 424 fb –1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e – collider. The selection of e + e – → τ + τ – events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 –8 on the branching fraction of the τ – → μ – μ + μ – decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Search for the decay B 0 → γ γ using Belle and Belle II data

Power balance and divertor asymmetries in the Super-X divertors of MAST-U using SOLPS-ITER

Spherical tokamaks (STs) present unique challenges and opportunities in the area of particle and power exhaust, intensified due to their more compact sizes. Substantial efforts are underway in STs to determine the limits in dissipative operational regimes and advanced divertor solutions, including at MAST-U which provides access to the Super-X divertor configuration. Power balance, and upper/lower divertor asymmetries have been studied using SOLPS-ITER simulations of the MAST-U Super-X divertor. A set of simulations with experimentally inferred transport coefficients with E x B and diamagnetic drifts activated, consisting of density and power scans, and high field side vs low field side gas puff locations, have been used for code experimentation to uncover trends beyond the current experimental parameter space. The upper biased asymmetry (U:L > 1) of the ratio of the peaks of the plasma energy flux densities at the outer targets increases with heating power and decreases with gas puff strength, going from symmetric to up to a factor of 15. The upper target electron temperature has been found to be a good ordering quantity for the magnitude of this asymmetry for all heating powers, gas puff strength, and gas puff locations. The lower divertor biased asymmetry (U:L < 1) of the radiation patterns processed through SOLPS-based bolometry synthetic diagnostics is in qualitative agreement with resistive bolometry experimental results, and it is in quantitative agreement with the trend of the total volume radiation within the divertors of SOLPS. However, radiation measurements alone are not sufficient to infer the magnitude of the asymmetry of the peaks of the power loads at the targets.

Search for charmed baryons in the Λ c + η system and measurement of the branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to Λ c + η and p D 0 relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π

We search for excited charmed baryons in the Λ c + η system using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980 fb − 1 . The data were collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − asymmetric-energy collider. No significant signals are found in the Λ c + η mass spectrum, including the known Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + . Clear Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + signals are observed in the p D 0 mass spectrum. We set upper limits at 90% credibility level on ratios of branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to Λ c + η relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π of < 0.13 for the Λ c ( 2880 ) + and < 1.11 for the Λ c ( 2940 ) + . We measure ratios of branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to p D 0 relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π of 0.75 ± 0.03 ( stat ) ± 0.07 ( syst ) for the Λ c ( 2880 ) + and 3.59 ± 0.21 ( stat ) ± 0.56 ( syst ) for the Λ c ( 2940 ) + . Search for a massless dark photon in c → u γ ′ decays

Using 7.9 f b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the massless dark photon with the flavor-changing neutral current processes D 0 → ω γ ′ and D 0 → γ γ ′ for the first time. Constraining off-shell Higgs boson production and the Higgs boson total width using WW → ℓνℓν final states with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of off-shell Higgs boson production is performed in the H* → WW channel. The measurement uses a proton–proton collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Final states in which both W bosons decay leptonically are targeted, and events are categorised based on the flavour of the final-state leptons, the jet multiplicity, and the output of neural network-based classifiers. The data are found to be compatible with the Standard Model expectation. An observed (expected) upper bound on the 95 % symmetric confidence level interval is set on the rate of off-shell Higgs boson production at a value of 3.4 (4.4) times the Standard Model prediction. These results are combined with the results from the measurement of on-shell Higgs boson production in the same final states to obtain an observed (expected) upper bound at 95 % confidence level on the Higgs boson total width of 13.1 (17.3) MeV.
