The effect of transverse shear in a cracked plate under skew-symmetric loading

The problem of an elastic plate containing a through crack and subjected to twisting moments or transverse shear loads is considered. By using a bending theory which allows the satisfaction of the boundary conditions on the crack surface regarding the normal and the twisting moments and the transverse shear load separately, it is found that the resulting asymptotic stress field around the crack tip becomes identical to that given by the elasticity solutions of the plane strain and antiplane shear problems. The problem is solved for uniformly distributed or concentrated twisting moment or transverse shear load and the normalized Mode II and Mode III stress-intensity factors are tabulated. The results also include the effect of the Poisson's ratio and material orthotropy for specially orthotropic materials on the stress-intensity factors.

Method and tool for machining a transverse slot about a bore

A method and apparatus for cutting a transverse slot about a bore of smaller diameter than that of the slot are disclosed. The invention consists of introducing a cutting head facing transversely to the bore, through the bore opening its distance from the mill shaft being progressively extended by the addition of spacers between the head and the shaft until the desired slot depth is obtained. The spacers are held in position by a cable passing from the cutting head through the series of spacers and out along the mill shaft. The mill shaft carrying the cutting head is moved transversely into the object wherein the slot is being cut as the object is being rotated thereabout by the mill table to which it is affixed.

An endochronic theory for transversely isotropic fibrous composites

A rational methodology of modelling both nonlinear and elastic dissipative response of transversely isotropic fibrous composites is developed and illustrated with the aid of the observed response of graphite-polyimide off-axis coupons. The methodology is based on the internal variable formalism employed within the text of classical irreversible thermodynamics and entails extension of Valanis' endochronic theory to transversely isotropic media. Applicability of the theory to prediction of various response characteristics of fibrous composites is illustrated by accurately modelling such often observed phenomena as: stiffening reversible behavior along fiber direction; dissipative response in shear and transverse tension characterized by power-laws with different hardening exponents; permanent strain accumulation; nonlinear unloading and reloading; and stress-interaction effects.

Application of transmission loss concept in the evaluation of an acoustic filter for liquid-borne transverse resonance modes in a duct of circular cross section

The transmission loss concept is used in the evaluation of an acoustic filter for liquid-borne transverse modes. Tests are conducted to determine the nature of filter element designs required to suppress transverse modes, to verify the presence of transverse modes in the test assembly, to define the acoustic wave incident, and to establish data recording, processing and analysis techniques providing transmission wave filter data. The first, second, and third tangential modes, and the first radial mode are found at frequencies of 2150, 3330, 4420, and 4110 Hz, respectively, and peaks of the tangential modes recede while the radial mode peak remains, demonstrating agreement with theoretical nodal patterns. The present design is found applicable to a liquid-oxygen system, and allows the easy-to-fabricate filter to fit within the available space envelope.

Modulation of energetic particle fluxes by a mixed mode of transverse and compressional waves

Modulation characteristics of particle fluxes in the presence of a mixed mode of compressional and transverse magnetic waves at hydromagnetic frequencies are investigated through kinetic perturbation of the distribution function. The magnetospheric medium where the particles are modulated contains both the magnetic and pressure gradients. The modulation features are found to be strongly dependent on the energy and pitch angle of the particles. Drifting particles can resonate with waves whose phase velocities are close to their drift velocities. When this occurs, the modulation amplitudes become significantly large and large phase shifts will occur. It is pointed out that resonance is important for particles with mid pitch angles (40-70 deg). The phase shift between the particle modulations and the magnetic field oscillations are strongly controlled by the combined effects of transverse and compressional wave components and/or the occurrence of drift resonance. Numerical calculations are performed using the dispersion relation of drift mirror Alfven waves as an example of waves with both compressional and transverse components.

The collisionless macroscopic Kelvin-Helmholtz instabiity. I Transverse electrostatic mode

The electrostatic limit of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a collisionless plasma is investigated for a magnetic field perpendicular to the velocity flow. A two-fluid eigenvalue analysis of the transverse electrostatic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is performed using the Chew-Goldberger-Low hydromagnetic equations with first-order finite Larmer radius corrections, establishing that the transverse electrostatic mode reduces to the incompressible transverse MHD mode in the limit of zero ion gyroradius. The linear growth rates are determined and a strong stabilization of the instability for (k-perpendicular) (rho sub i) of 0.2 or greater is observed. The nonlinear stage of the instability displays large vortices whose size is many times the initial velocity shear length. At saturation the simulation is dominated by the longest-wavelength mode permitted in the system. The simulation results can be understood in terms of a simple model which assumes that saturation occurs when the angular frequency of the vortex motion reaches the linear growth rate of the instability.

Transverse thermal expansion of carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composites

Thermal expansion coefficients and moduli of elasticity have been determined experimentally for a series of epoxy-matrix composites reinforced with carbon and Kevlar fibers. It is found that in the transverse direction the difference between the properties of the fiber and the matrix is not as pronounced as in the longitudinal direction, where the composite properties are fiber-dominated. Therefore, the pattern of fiber packing tends to affect transverse composite properties. The transverse properties of the composites tested are examined from the standpoint of the concept of homogeneity defined as the variation of packing (or lack thereof) throughout a sample.

Quasi-instantaneous transverse vorticity measurements in an excited, two-dimensional, single stream mixing layer

Quasi-instantaneous transverse vorticity time series were obtained with a four-wire array at each of the 414 points in the measurement grid. These vorticity measurements indicate absolute values of peak vorticity which are an order of magnitude greater than those indicated by phase averaged transverse vorticity measurements. These large quasi-instantaneous transverse vorticity fluctuations indicate strong mixing throughout the core and periphery of the newly formed and saturated vortical structures. Although the magnitude is approximately the same throughout these structures, the frequency of occurrence of these large fluctuations appears to be less on the low speed side of the newly formed vortex.

An equilibrium method for prediction of transverse shear stresses in a thick laminated plate

First two equations of equilibrium are utilized to compute the transverse shear stress variation through thickness of a thick laminated plate after in-plane stresses have been computed using an assumed quadratic displacement triangular element based on transverse inextensibility and layerwise constant shear angle theory (LCST). Centroid of the triangle is the point of exceptional accuracy for transverse shear stresses. Numerical results indicate close agreement with elasticity theory. An interesting comparison between the present theory and that based on assumed stress hybrid finite element approach suggests that the latter does not satisfy the condition of free normal traction at the edge. Comparison with numerical results obtained by using constant shear angle theory suggests that LCST is close to the elasticity solution while the CST is closer to classical (CLT) solution. It is also demonstrated that the reduced integration gives faster convergence when the present theory is applied to a thin plate.

Influence of large deflection and transverse shear on random response of rectangular symmetric composite laminates to acoustic loads

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived accounting for von Karman strains. The effect of transverse shear is included in the formulation and the rotatory inertia effect is ignored. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. Direct equivalent linearization is employed. The response of acoustic excitation on moderately thick composite panels is studied. Further, the effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminates under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflection and mean-square inplane stresses are obtained for some symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for simply supported plate. The analogous equations for a clamped case are given in the appendix.

Average transverse momentum and energy density in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

Emulsion chambers were used to measure the transverse momenta of photons or pi(0) mesons produced in high-energy cosmic-ray nucleus-nucleus collisions. A group of events having large average transverse momenta has been found which apparently exceeds the expected limiting values. Analysis of the events at early interaction times, of the order of 1 fm/c, indicates that the observed transverse momentum increases with both rapidity density and energy density.

Kinetic theory for electrostatic waves due to transverse velocity shears

A kinetic theory in the form of an integral equation is provided to study the electrostatic oscillations in a collisionless plasma immersed in a uniform magnetic field and a nonuniform transverse electric field. In the low temperature limit the dispersion differential equation is recovered for the transverse Kelvin-Helmholtz modes for arbitrary values of K parallel, where K parallel is the component of the wave vector in the direction of the external magnetic field assumed in the z direction. For higher temperatures the ion-cyclotron-like modes described earlier in the literature by Ganguli, Lee and Plamadesso are recovered. In this article, the integral equation is reduced to a second-order differential equation and a study is made of the kinetic Kelvin-Helmholtz and ion-cyclotron-like modes that constitute the two branches of oscillation in a magnetized plasma including a transverse inhomogeneous dc electric field.

Transverse ion energization and low-frequency plasma waves in the mid-altitude auroral zone - A case study

Evidence of transverse ion energization at altitudes of several earth radii in the auroral zone was reexamined using several hundred hours of high-sensitivity and high-resolution plasma data obtained by the Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite. The data on particle environment encountered at midaltitudes in the auroral zone disclosed rapid variations in the values of total density, thermal structure, and composition of the plasma in the interval measured; the modes of low-frequency plasma waves also varied rapidly. It was not possible to unambiguously identify in these data particle and wave signature of local transverse ion energization; however, many intervals were found where local transverse ion heating was consistent with the observations.

Effects of transverse shear on large deflection random response of symmetric composite laminates with mixed boundary conditions

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived considering von Karman strains and transverse shear effects. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure, the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. The direct equivalent linearization method is employed for solution of this equation. The effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminated plates with mixed boundary support conditions under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflections and mean-square inplane strains are obtained for symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for plates with two opposing edges simply supported and the remaining edges clamped.

Postbuckling response of long thick isotropic plates loaded in compression including higher order transverse shearing effects

Buckling and postbuckling results for aluminum plates loaded in compression are presented. The buckling results were plotted to show the effects of thickness on the stress coefficient. Buckling results are given for various length-to-width ratios. Postbuckling results for plates with transverse shearing flexibility are compared to results from classical theory for various width-to-thickness ratios. The plates are considered to be long with side edges simply supported, with edges free of stress and the plates are subjected to longitudinal compressive displacement. Characteristic curves indicating the average longitudinal direct stress resultant as a function of the applied displacements are calculated based on four different theories: Classical von Karman, first-order shear deformation, higher-order shear deformation, and three-dimensional flexibility. Present results indicate that the three-dimensional flexibility theory gives the lowest and therefore, most accurate results. The higher-order shear deformation theory has fewer unknowns than the three-dimensional flexibility but is not as accurate. The figures presented show that small differences occur in the maximum stress resultants and the transverse displacements calculated when the effects of transverse shear are included.

Turbulent flow separation control over a backward-facing ramp via transverse and swept grooves

Separation control experiments were conducted in a 51-71-cm shear-flow control tunnel using a backward-facing ramp to investigate the performance of transverse and swept grooves for controlling a two-dimensional turbulent separated flow at low speeds and moderate Reynolds numbers. In the experiments, transverse grooves, located in the maximum +dP/dx region, with a height-to-width ratio greater than 2.5, reduced the reattachment distance by 20 percent over the baseline configuration. Unlike transverse and longitudinal grooves of equivalent size, the 45-degree swept-groove configurations tested enhanced separation.

Scale effects on the transverse tensile strength of graphite epoxy composites

The influence of material volume on the transverse tensile strength of AS4/3501-6 graphite epoxy composites was investigated. Tensile tests of 90 degree laminates with 3 different widths and 5 different thicknesses were conducted. A finite element analysis was performed to determine the influence of the grip on the stress distribution in the coupons and explain the tendency for the distribution of failure locations to be skewed toward the grip. Specimens were instrumented with strain gages and extensometers to insure good alignment and to measure failure strains. Data indicated that matrix dominated strength properties varied with the volume of material that was stressed, with the strength decreasing as volume increased. Transverse strength data were used in a volumetric scaling law based on Weibull statistics to predict the strength of 90 degree laminates loaded in three point bending. Comparisons were also made between transverse strength measurements and out-of-plane interlaminar tensile strength measurements from curved beam bending tests. The significance of observed scale effects on the use of tests for material screening, quality assurance, and design allowables is discussed.
