Residual stress accumulation in large-scale Ti-6Al-4V wire-arc additive manufacturing

Large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) is of interest in the manufacturing industry to produce components of dimensions on the order of hundreds of millimeters to meters in scale. Wire-arc AM (WAAM) of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) is an attractive technique for large-scale AM in the aerospace industry, give the high strength-to-weight ratio of the material and high deposition rate of the process. However, due to the large scale, significant distortion and residual stresses are developed in the material during deposition and cooling, potentially leading to part failure. WAAM of a prototypical large-scale Ti64 machine tool component is studied in this work via finite element analysis (FEA). Element activation/deactivation technique is employed to simulate deposition and the resulting distortion and residual stress (RS) predictions are analyzed to evaluate the possibility of crack formation. Significant distortion (∼10 mm) and RS (>1300 MPa) is predicted, suggesting the formation of cracks and possible crack propagation into the build region. Incorporation of fillets significantly reduces RS concentration regions, thus reducing the possibility of part failure. Material deposition sequence also affects the RS pattern in the build.

Temperature dependence of field-response mechanisms in 0.4Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 –0.6(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3

Understanding the temperature dependence of how ferroelectric materials respond to electric fields is critical for determining how best to use these materials in applications. In this study, temperature dependent in situ x-ray diffraction is used to study how field-response mechanism Ba ( Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 ) O 3 – x ( Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 ) TiO 3 evolves with temperature. Increasing the measurement temperature was found to slightly reduce the extent of domain reversal and the magnitude of the 111 lattice strain. Instead, these results indicate that temperature predominantly impacted the angular dependence of the 002/200 lattice strain. We attribute the observed differences in 002/200 lattice strain to the flattening of the free-energy near the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary, where the flattening of the energy landscape promotes a polarization rotation response during the application of electric fields at room temperature.

A fully coupled thermal–microstructural–mechanical finite element process model for directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of Ti–6Al–4V

A fully coupled thermal–microstructural–mechanical finite element modelling framework is developed to investigate the distortion and residual stresses during directed energy deposition (DED) of multi-phase Ti–6Al–4V alloy. The Johnson–Cook constitutive model is used to predict the yield strength of each phase as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature where the flow stress is calculated by a linear mixing rule based on the volumetric phase fractions. A thin-walled rectangular sample is chosen as the reference geometry and the results are compared with experimentally measured in situ thermal history and distortion data, where a reasonable agreement is achieved. The proposed modelling framework with physics-based material constitutive model provides useful information for a better understanding of process–microstructure–property relations in additive manufacturing by DED.

Petrogenetic modeling of 74220 high-Ti orange volcanic glasses and the Apollo 11 and 17 high-Ti mare basalts

An INAA analysis of 16 individual spherules of orange volcanic glass extracted from the 74220,680 soil was performed in order to determine trace element signatures in a primary high-Ti mare magma. The composition of these glasses is shown to be nearly identical to that of 74220 bulk soil, indicating a general absence of constituents other than volcanic glass in the soil. The results suggest that the evolving lunar mantle included processes of cumulate-mass transport and/or segregation of the primordial lunar magma ocean into separate differentiating zones, allowing commingling of early and late components.

Photocatalytic Biocidal Coatings Featuring Zr 6 Ti 4 -Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

The world is currently suffering socially, economically, and politically from the recent pandemic outbreak due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and those in hospitals, schools, and elderly nursing homes face enhanced threats. Healthcare textiles, such as masks and medical staff gowns, are susceptible to contamination of various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Here, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can potentially address these challenges due to their tunable reactivity and ability to be incorporated as porous coatings on textile materials. Here, we report how incorporating titanium into the zirconium-pyrene-based MOF NU-1000, denoted as NU-1012, generates a highly reactive biocidal photocatalyst. This MOF features a rare ligand migration phenomenon, and both the Ti/Zr center and the pyrene linker act synergistically as dual active centers and widen the absorption band for this material that results in enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation upon visible light irradiation. Additionally, we found the ligand migration process is generally applicable to other csq topology Zr-MOFs. Importantly, NU-1012 can be easily incorporated onto cotton textile cloths as a coating, and the resulting composite material demonstrates fast and potent biocidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), Gram-positive bacteria (S. epidermidis), and T7 bacteriophage virus with up to a 7-log (99.99999%) reduction within one hour under simulated daylight.
