Synergistic heat pumped thermal storage and flexible carbon capture system

A power plant system is disclosed. The power plant system includes a combustor configured, a turbine configured to generate electricity, a heat exchanger and a steam turbine, a carbon capture system configured to remove at least a portion of carbon-based gasses from the flue gas downstream from the heat recovery steam generator, and a thermal storage system including a hot storage unit configured to store thermal energy at a hot temperature, the hot temperature greater than ambient temperature. The power plant is configured to operate in at least a first mode for storing thermal energy in the thermal storage system and a second mode for releasing the stored thermal energy from the thermal storage system and during the second mode, heat stored in the hot storage unit is transferred to the carbon capture system.

Re-Designing the CSP Thermal Energy Storage System to Enable Higher-Temperature Performance at Reduced Cost (Final Technical Report)

Current commercial concentrating solar power (CSP) plants distinguish themselves from ordinary photovoltaic (PV) power plants by storing enough collected energy to enable generation for several hours after the sun goes down. CSP plants store this energy in the sensible heat of nitrate salts in large metallic storage tanks. Stainless-steel AISI 347H (SS347H) is needed for the hot tank operating at about 565 degrees C whereas carbon steel is sufficient for the cold-tank materials. Two-tank nitrate-salt thermal energy storage (TES) is presently in use in several trough-based CSP plants in Europe and in the U.S., operating up to about 390 degrees C. Three commercially operating tower-based CSP plants - Gemasolar in Spain, Crescent Dunes in Nevada, and Noor III in Morocco - use the same approach, storing nitrate salts at temperatures up to 580 degrees C. SS347H is many times more expensive than carbon steel and constitutes a significant cost element in today's CSP plants. Hence, CSP developers need to close the cost gap with PV-based solar plants by making cost reductions in every system of the plant. Redesigning the TES tanks is one opportunity for cost reduction.

Testing and Modeling of Subscale Ice-on-Coil Module as Low Temperature Reservoir for sCO2 based Pumped Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Echogen tested approximately 10 kWthsubscale IOC system in their lab in Akron, OH for studying the feasibility, endurance and performance impact of the technology on PTES system. This paper discusses the test loop setup, testing and results from this sub-scale IOC testing. Along with testing, the project team also developed sub-scale IOC transient model. The paper discusses this transient model development and its validation against the test data.

Validation and Verification of TEDS Facility HYBRID Modeling

The HYBRID modeling repository is an in-house developed library of models for selected integrated energy systems (IES) modelling. HYBRID models have been developed since 2015 to describe the physical operation of tightly coupled thermal systems including power generators, thermal transport systems, thermal storage, thermal-to-electric conversion systems, and other thermal applications. Here, validation and verification (V&V) capabilities are demonstrated using the Thermal Energy Distribution System (TEDS) at INL. Building upon prior work, the TEDS model has been updated and verified so that it better represents the installed system configuration and the operating control system. The model control system was changed to allow replication of actual experimental procedures. Experimental operations focusing primarily on thermocline tank performance were devised and performed. Several anomalies were found in the operation data of the experiment facility. V&V activities calibrating a selected input parameter are demonstrated on a single component as well as with a single parameter within the thermocline. Calibrating is then demonstrated on multiple components and a multi-parameter metric for the entire system. The validation methodology is successfully applied to validate the model with experimental data. It is also used to confirm a hypothesis behind one of the anomalies in experimental performance.

Methods and systems for thermal energy storage and their use in buildings applications

The present disclosure relates to particle-based thermal energy storage (TES) systems employed for the heating and cooling applications for residential and/or commercial buildings. Particle-based TES systems may store thermal energy in the particles during off-peak times (i.e., when electricity demand and/or costs are relatively low) and remove the stored thermal energy for heating or cooling applications for buildings during peak times (i.e., when electricity demand and/or costs are relatively high).
