Sockeye Theory Manual

Sockeye is an application that models heat pipe performance, based on the MOOSE framework. Its primary focus is on liquid-metal heat pipes with annular screen or porous wick structures, with the intended application being the simulation of heat pipes in microreactors. The purpose of this capability is to evaluate and understand heat pipe performance under different conditions. Furthermore, this heat pipe performance is intended to be coupled to multiphysics applications for modeling microreactors, so that the effects of heat pipe performance on the larger reactor system can be simulated.

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria Thermal Theory Manual - Version 4.58

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (R e < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual - Version 4.58

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Theory Manual - Version 4.58

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Theory Manual for the Fuel Cycle Analysis Code REBUS

REBUS is a system of programs designed for the fuel cycle analysis of fast reactors and accelerator-driven systems. The first version of REBUS was developed in 1970 for calculating the equilibrium operating conditions of liquid metal fast breeder reactors. During the past five decades, various extensions and refinements have been made in the simulation of material motions in fuel cycle facilities and the solution of the neutronics and isotopic transmutation equations that govern the reactor behavior. The latest version complies with the standard code practices and interface dataset specifications of the committee on computer code coordination (CCCC). This report provides a detailed description of the physical processes and their mathematical models and solution methods of the current production version of REBUS. The models of the facilities and physical processes involved in fast reactor fuel cycle are first discussed. Then the mathematical formulation of these physical models is presented, followed by detailed discussions of solution methods of the resulting set of equations. Finally the output edit quantities are discussed along with their definitions.

RAVEN Theory Manual

RAVEN is a software framework able to perform parametric and stochastic analysis based on the response of complex system codes. The initial development was aimed at providing dynamic risk analysis capabilities to the thermohydraulic code RELAP-7, currently under development at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Although the initial goal has been fully accomplished, RAVEN is now a multi-purpose stochastic and uncertainty quantification platform, capable of communicating with any system code. In fact, the provided Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) allow RAVEN to interact with any code as long as all the parameters that need to be perturbed are accessible by input files or via python interfaces. RAVEN is capable of investigating system response and explore input space using various sampling schemes such as Monte Carlo, grid, or Latin hypercube. However, RAVEN strength lies in its system feature discovery capabilities such as: constructing limit surfaces, separating regions of the input space leading to system failure, and using dynamic supervised learning techniques. The development of RAVEN started in 2012 when, within the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, the need to provide a modern risk evaluation framework arose. RAVEN’s principal assignment is to provide the necessary software and algorithms in order to employ the concepts developed by the Risk Informed Safety Margin Characterization (RISMC) program. RISMC is one of the pathways defined within the Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) program. In the RISMC approach, the goal is not just to identify the frequency of an event potentially leading to a system failure, but the proximity (or lack thereof) to key safety-related events. Hence, the approach is interested in identifying and increasing the safety margins related to those events. A safety margin is a numerical value quantifying the probability that a safety metric (e.g. peak pressure in a pipe) is exceeded under certain conditions. Most of the capabilities, implemented having RELAP-7 as a principal focus, are easily deployable to other system codes. For this reason, several side activates have been employed (e.g. RELAP5-3D, any MOOSE-based App, etc.) or are currently ongoing for coupling RAVEN with several different software. The aim of this document is to provide a set of commented examples that can help the user to become familiar with the RAVEN code usage.

Ducted Assembly Steady-State Heat Transfer Software (DASSH): Theory Manual

The Ducted Assembly Steady-State Heat transfer software (DASSH) is being developed at Argonne National Laboratory to obtain a steady-state thermal fluids result for the coolant flow and temperature distribution in a hexagonally gridded reactor core with ducted assemblies. In DASSH, each assembly is assumed to contain a hexagonal bundle of wire-wrapped pins. DASSH divides the coolant in the pin bundle into subchannels on which it applies energy balances to determine coolant and duct temperatures. DASSH offers multiple models for inter assembly heat transfer and features the ability to calculate pin temperatures. This document describes the models and equations implemented in DASSH. It includes a description of the geometric system to which the models are applied and a derivation of the subchannel energy balance formulation is presented. It also reviews the available correlations and provides an overview of the process by which power distributions are generated. Finally, it covers the code execution procedure, discussing the main code objects and their interactions.
