Frequency combs in optically injected terahertz ring quantum cascade lasers

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) have emerged as promising candidates for generating chip-scale frequency combs in mid-infrared and terahertz wavelengths. In this work, we demonstrate frequency comb formation in ring terahertz QCLs using the injection of light from a distributed feedback (DFB) laser. The DFB design frequency is chosen to match the modes of the ring cavity (near 3.3 THz), and light from the DFB is injected into the ring QCL via a bus waveguide. By controlling the power and frequency of the optical injection, we show that combs can be selectively formed and controlled in the ring cavity. Numerical modeling suggests that this comb is primarily frequency-modulated in character, with the injection serving to trigger comb formation. We also show that the ring can be used as a filter to control the output of the DFB QCL, potentially being of interest in terahertz photonic integrated circuits. Our work demonstrates that waveguide couplers are a compelling approach for injecting and extracting radiation from ring terahertz combs and offer exciting possibilities for the generation of new comb states in terahertz, such as frequency-modulated waves, solitons, and more.

Numerical simulation of terahertz radiation by laser-driven plasma dipole oscillation

Laser-plasma interactions have many theoretical and technological applications. One is the use of coherently accelerated electrons to provide novel sources of THz radiation. Our research focuses on simulating the cross/self-interactions between two high intensity, ultra-short, counter propagating and detuned laser pulses and an initial neutral target for controlled ionization. Unlike our previous studies of laser-matter interaction over preformed plasma, we explore the injection and collision of laser pulses to induce background plasma driven by the self-guided laser wakefield mechanism, which is then used to perturb the plasma resulting in induced dipole oscillations leading to transverse radiation. Inducing a cylindrical spatial plasma column within the laser beam radius regime provides a stable, spatially localized plasma channel. The emitted radiation from the plasma dipole oscillation (PDO) will not be affected by surrounding plasma absorption, resulting in effective radiation distribution. Finally, results include 3D EM-PIC simulations and a comparison of the self- ionizing plasma against the preformed plasma to assess the efficiency of the mechanisms.

Electrically Tunable Terahertz Quantum-Cascade Lasers

Improved quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) are being developed as electrically tunable sources of radiation in the far infrared spectral region, especially in the frequency range of 2 to 5 THz. The structures of QCLs and the processes used to fabricate them have much in common with those of multiple- quantum-well infrared photodetectors.

Plasmonics-enhanced photoconductive terahertz detector pumped by Ytterbium-doped fiber laser

We present a photoconductive terahertz detector operating at the 1 µm wavelength range at which high-power and compact Ytterbium-doped femtosecond fiber lasers are available. The detector utilizes an array of plasmonic nanoantennas to provide sub-picosecond transit time for the majority of photo-generated carriers to enable high-sensitivity terahertz detection without using a short-carrier-lifetime substrate. By using a high-mobility semiconductor substrate and preventing photocarrier recombination, the presented detector offers significantly higher sensitivity levels compared with previously demonstrated broadband photoconductive terahertz detectors operating at the 1 µm wavelength range. We demonstrate pulsed terahertz detection over a 4 THz bandwidth with a record-high signal-to-noise ratio of 95 dB at an average terahertz radiation power of 6.8 µW, when using an optical pump power of 30 mW.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

Phase Locking of a THz QC-VECSEL to a Microwave Reference

We report high-resolution frequency study and phase locking have been performed on a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL) operating around 2.5 THz. A subharmonic diode mixer is used to down convert the THz signal to a 100 MHz intermediate frequency that is phase locked to a stable 100 MHz microwave reference. Between 90% and 95% of the QC-VECSEL signal is locked within 2 Hz of the multiplied RF reference, and amplitude fluctuations on the order of 1%–10% are observed, depending on the bias point of the QC-VECSEL. The bandwidth of the locking loop is ~1 MHz. Many noise peaks in the IF signal are observed, likely corresponding to mechanical resonances in the 10 Hz–10 kHz. These peaks are generally -30 to -60 dB below the main tone and are below the phase noise level of the multiplied RF reference that ultimately limits the phase noise of the locked QC-VECSEL.

Dephasingless two-color terahertz generation

A laser pulse composed of a fundamental and an appropriately phased second harmonic can drive a time-dependent current of photoionized electrons that generates broadband THz radiation. Over the propagation distances relevant to many experiments, dispersion causes the relative phase between the harmonics to evolve. This “dephasing” slows the accumulation of THz energy and results in a multi-cycle THz pulse with significant angular dispersion. Here, we introduce a novel optical configuration that compensates the relative phase evolution, allowing for the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with almost no angular dispersion. The configuration uses the spherical aberration of an axilens to map a prescribed radial phase variation in the near field to a desired longitudinal phase variation in the far field. Simulations that combine this configuration with an ultrashort flying focus demonstrate the formation of a half-cycle THz pulse with a controlled emission angle and 1/4 the angular divergence of the multi-cycle pulse created by a conventional optical configuration.

Tunable Metasurface External-Cavity Quantum Cascade Lasers up to 5.74 THz

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers based on amplifying quantum-cascade metasurfaces are demonstrated in the 5–6 THz range for the first time. Enhanced parasitic coupling to lossy surface modes requires updated design guidelines, while elevated losses and lower available material gain limit the scaling of the metasurface period from previous designs. A series of metasurface devices with varying periods employing both uniform and focusing metasurfaces is fabricated and characterized. Reducing the metasurface period below 70% of the free-space wavelength enables devices with superior performance, achieving pulsed operation up to 5.74 THz with peak output powers of 1.3 mW, maximum operating temperatures up to 83 K, and continuous-wave operation up to 54 K with 23 μW of output power. In the best case, single-mode tuning from 5.23–5.73 THz, which corresponds to a 9.1% fractional tuning, is realized with near-Gaussian far-field profiles maintained across the entire range. Finally, these results establish quantum cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers as promising candidates for high-frequency local oscillator applications in heterodyne spectroscopy.

Continuous-wave GaAs/AlGaAs quantum cascade laser at 5.7 THz

Design strategies for improving terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) in the 5–6 THz range are investigated numerically and experimentally, with the goal of overcoming the degradation in performance that occurs as the laser frequency approaches the Reststrahlen band. Two designs aimed at 5.4 THz were selected: one optimized for lower power dissipation and one optimized for better temperature performance. The active regions exhibited broadband gain, with the strongest modes lasing in the 5.3–5.6 THz range, but with other various modes observed ranging from 4.76 to 6.03 THz. Pulsed and continuous-wave (cw) operation is observed up to temperatures of 117 K and 68 K, respectively. In cw mode, the ridge laser has modes up to 5.71 THz – the highest reported frequency for a THz QCL in cw mode. The waveguide loss associated with the doped contact layers and metallization is identified as a critical limitation to performance above 5 THz.

Spatiotemporal control of two-color terahertz generation

A laser pulse composed of a fundamental and properly phased second harmonic exhibits an asymmetric electric field that can drive a time-dependent current of photoionized electrons. The current produces an ultrashort burst of terahertz (THz) radiation. When driven by a conventional laser pulse, the THz radiation is emitted into a cone with an angle determined by the dispersion of the medium. Here we demonstrate that the programmable-velocity intensity peak of a spatiotemporally structured, two-color laser pulse can be used to control the emission angle, focal spot, and spectrum of the THz radiation. Of particular interest for applications, a structured pulse with a subluminal intensity peak can drive highly focusable, on-axis THz radiation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Single-shot local measurement of terahertz correlated second harmonic generation in laser air plasma filaments

We present a single-shot detection method of terahertz correlated second harmonic generation in plasma-based sources by directly mixing an optical probe into femtosecond laser-induced plasma filaments in air. Furthermore, the single-shot second harmonic trace is obtained by measuring a second harmonic generation on a conventional CCD with a spatiotemporally distorted probe beam. The system shows a spectrometer resolution of 22 fs/pixel on the CCD and a true resolution on the order of the probe pulse duration. With considerable THz peak electric field strength, this formalism can open the door to single-shot THz detection without bandwidth limitations.

Observation of polarization density waves in SrTiO 3

The nature of the incipient ferroelectric transition in SrTiO 3 has been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. One explanation involves the competition between ferroelectricity and an instability characterized by the mesoscopic modulation of the polarization. These polarization density waves, which should intensify near the quantum critical point, break local inversion symmetry and are difficult to characterize with conventional X-ray scattering methods. Here, in this study, we probe inversion symmetry breaking at finite momenta and visualize the instability of the polarization at the nanometre scale in SrTiO3 by combining a femtosecond X-ray free-electron laser with terahertz coherent control methods. We found polar-acoustic collective modes that are soft, particularly at the tens of nanometre scale. These precursor collective excitations provide evidence for the conjectured mesoscopic-modulated phase in SrTiO 3 .

Atomic-scale quantum sensing based on the ultrafast coherence of an H 2 molecule in an STM cavity

A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) combined with a pump-probe femtosecond terahertz (THz) laser can enable coherence measurements of single molecules. We report THz pump-probe measurements that demonstrate quantum sensing based on a hydrogen (H 2 ) molecule in the cavity created with an STM tip near a surface. Atomic-scale spatial and femtosecond temporal resolutions were obtained from this quantum coherence. The H 2 acts as a two-level system, with its coherent superposition exhibiting extreme sensitivity to the applied electric field and the underlying atomic composition of the copper nitride (Cu 2 N) monolayer islands grown on a Cu(100) surface. We acquired time-resolved images of THz rectification of H 2 over Cu 2 N islands for variable pump-probe delay times to visualize the heterogeneity of the chemical environment at sub-angstrom scale.

First high peak and average power single-pass THz free-electron laser in operation

We report on the operation of the first high peak and average power single-pass terahertz free-electron laser (THz FEL) based on a high-brightness photoinjector for developing a THz source for pump-probe experiments at advanced x-ray FELs (XFELs). Electron beams with 17 MeV/c momentum and charge up to 2.4 nC were used to generate narrow-band 3 THz radiation with pulse energies of more than 0.1 mJ. The novelty of the realized method is that the undulator radiation by electron beams is much longer than the radiation wavelength, with FEL starting from coherent beam contribution rather than shot noise. This proved to be not a simple scaling of the XFEL mechanism due to the significant role of the bunching factor in the considered case.

1.9 THz Quantum-cascade Lasers with One-well Injector

We report terahertz quantum-cascade lasers operating predominantly at 1.90 THz with side modes as low as 1.86 THz (lambda approx. equal to 161 micrometers, planck's constant omega approx. equal to 7.7 meV). This is the longest wavelength to date of any solid-state laser that operates without assistance of a magnetic field. Carriers are injected into the upper radiative state by using a single quantum-well injector, which resulted in a significant reduction of free-carrier losses. The laser operated up to a heat-sink temperature of 110 K in pulsed mode, 95 K in continuous wave (cw) mode, and the threshold current density at 5 K was approx. 140 A per square centimeters.
