Constructing Hubbard models for the hydrogen chain using sliced-basis density matrix renormalization group

Sliced-basis DMRG(sb-DMRG) is used to simulate a chain of hydrogen atoms and to construct low-energy effective Hubbard-like models. The downfolding procedure first involves a change of basis to a set of atom-centered Wannier functions constructed from the natural orbitals of the exact DMRG one-particle density matrix. The Wannier function model is then reduced to a fewer-parameter Hubbard-like model, whose parameters are determined by minimizing the expectation value of the Wannier Hamiltonian in the ground state of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. This indirect variational procedure not only yields compact and simple models for the hydrogen chain, but also allows us to explore the importance of constraints in the effective Hamiltonian, such as the restricting the range of the single-particle hopping and two-particle interactions, and to assess the reliability of more conventional downfolding. The entanglement entropy for a model's ground state, cut in the middle, is an important property determining the ability of DMRG and tensor networks to simulate the model, and here we study its variation with the range of the interactions. Counterintuitively, we find that shorter ranged interactions often have larger entanglement.

Tensor renormalization group for fermions

Abstract We review the basic ideas of the tensor renormalization group method and show how they can be applied for lattice field theory models involving relativistic fermions and Grassmann variables in arbitrary dimensions. We discuss recent progress for entanglement filtering, loop optimization, bond-weighting techniques and matrix product decompositions for Grassmann tensor networks. The new methods are tested with two-dimensional Wilson–Majorana fermions and multi-flavor Gross–Neveu models. We show that the methods can also be applied to the fermionic Hubbard model in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions.

Dimerization and spin decoupling in a two-leg Heisenberg ladder with frustrated trimer rungs

We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin which is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong rung coupling a gapped dimerized phase related to competing symmetry sectors in Hilbert space that ultimately results in frustration-driven spin-Peierls transition. In the weak rung-coupling regime, the system is uniform, yet shows a gapped spinon continuum together with a sharp coherent low-energy branch which renders the system critical overall. In either case, the additional rung spin quickly get sidelined and nearly decouple in the regime when their bare coupling to the ladder is weakened

Quasi-Fermi liquid behavior in a one-dimensional system of interacting spinless fermions

We present numerical evidence for a paradigm in one-dimensional interacting fermion systems, whose phenomenology has traits of both Luttinger liquids and Fermi liquids. This state, dubbed a quasi-Fermi liquid, possesses a discontinuity in its fermion occupation number at the Fermi momentum. The excitation spectrum presents particlelike quasiparticles and absence of holelike quasiparticles, giving rise instead to edge singularities. Such a state is realized in a one-dimensional spinless fermion lattice Hamiltonian by fine-tuning the interactions to a regime where they become irrelevant in the renormalization group sense. We show, using uniform infinite matrix products states and finite-entanglement scaling analysis, that the system ground state is characterized by a Luttinger parameter K = 1 and a discontinuous jump in the fermion occupation number. We support the characterization with calculations of the spectral function that show a particle-hole asymmetry reflected in the existence of well-defined Landau quasiparticles above the Fermi level and edge singularities without the associated quasiparticles below. Furthermore, these results indicate that the quasi-Fermi liquid paradigm can be realized beyond the low-energy perturbative realm.

Finite and infinite matrix product states for Gutzwiller projected mean-field wave functions

Matrix product states (MPS) and “dressed” ground states of quadratic mean fields (e.g., Gutzwiller projected Slater determinants) are both important classes of variational wave functions. This latter class has played important roles in understanding superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. We present a method to obtain both the finite and infinite MPS (iMPS) representation of the ground state of an arbitrary fermionic quadratic mean-field Hamiltonian (which in the simplest case is a Slater determinant and in the most general case is a Pfaffian). We also show how to represent products of such states (e.g., determinants times Pfaffians). From this representation one can project to single occupancy and evaluate the entanglement spectra after Gutzwiller projection. We then obtain the MPS and iMPS representation of Gutzwiller projected mean-field states that arise from the variational slave-fermion approach to the S = 1 bilinear-biquadratic quantum spin chain. To accomplish this, we develop an approach to orthogonalize degenerate iMPS to find all the states in the degenerate ground-state manifold. We find the energies of the MPS and iMPS states match the variational energies closely, indicating the method is accurate and there is minimal loss due to truncation error. We then present an exploration of the entanglement spectra of projected slave-fermion states, exploring their qualitative features and finding good qualitative agreement with the respective exact ground-state spectra found from density matrix renormalization group.

Two-fermion negativity and confinement in the Schwinger model

We consider the fermionic (logarithmic) negativity between two fermionic modes in the Schwinger model. Recent results pointed out that fermionic systems can exhibit stronger entanglement than bosonic systems, exhibiting a negativity that decays only algebraically. The Schwinger model is described by fermionic excitations at short distances, while its asymptotic spectrum is the one of a bosonic theory. We show that the two-mode negativity detects this confining, fermion-to-boson transition, shifting from an algebraic decay to an exponential decay at distances of the order of the de Broglie wavelength of the first excited state. We derive analytical expressions in the massless Schwinger model and confront them with tensor network simulations. We also perform tensor network simulations in the massive model, which is not solvable analytically, and close to the Ising quantum critical point of the Schwinger model, where we show that the negativity behaves as its bosonic counterpart. Preparation of the SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills vacuum with variational quantum methods

Studying QCD and other gauge theories on quantum hardware requires the preparation of physically interesting states. The variational quantum eigensolver provides a way of performing vacuum state preparation on quantum hardware. Here in this work, variational quantum eigensolver is applied to pure SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills on a single plaquette and one dimensional plaquette chains. Bayesian optimization and gradient descent were investigated for performing the classical optimization. Ansatz states for plaquette chains are constructed in a scalable manner from smaller systems using domain decomposition and a stitching procedure analogous to the density matrix renormalization group. Small examples are performed on IBM’s superconducting Manila processor.

Exact matrix product state representation and convergence of a fully correlated electronic wavefunction in the infinite-basis limit

Here In this paper we present the exact representation of a fully correlated electronic wavefunction as the single-particle basis approaches completeness. It consists of a half-infinite chain of matrices of exponentially increasing size. The complete basis limit is illustrated numerically using the density-matrix renormalization-group method by computing the core-valence entanglement in the C 2 ground state in increasing subsets of cc-pVTZ and pVQZ bases until convergence is reached.

Transversity PDFs of the proton from lattice QCD with physical quark masses

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the transversity isovector- and isoscalar-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton utilizing a perturbative matching at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy. Additionally, we determine the isovector and isoscalar tensor charges for the proton. In both calculations, the disconnected contributions to the isoscalar matrix elements have been ignored. The calculations are performed using a single ensemble of N f = 2 + 1 highly improved staggered quarks simulated with physical-mass quarks and a lattice spacing of a = 0.076 fm . The Wilson-clover action, with physical quark masses and smeared gauge links obtained from one iteration of hypercubic smearing, is used in the valence sector. Using the NLO operator product expansion, we extract the lowest four to six Mellin moments and the PDFs via a neural network from the matrix elements in the pseudo-PDF approach. In addition, we calculate the PDFs in the quasi-PDF approach with hybrid-scheme renormalization and the recently developed leading-renormalon resummation technique, at NLO with the resummation of leading small- x logarithms. Anisotropic quantum Hall states in the presence of interactions with fourfold rotational symmetry

We study the effects of anisotropic interactions in the quantum Hall effect in the presence of a fourfold discrete rotational (C 4 ) symmetry. Employing the density matrix renormalization group technique on an infinite cylinder geometry (iDMRG), we calculate the anisotropy response of the Laughlin state at ν = 1/3 and the composite-Fermi liquid (CFL) state at ν = 1/2. We find that the anisotropy transferred from the interaction potential to the ν = 1/3 state is stronger when compared with the complementary case of an anisotropic band. Further, the strength of anisotropy reduces as the interaction is made shorter ranged. Quite surprisingly, at ν = 1/2, the deformation in the CF Fermi surface changes sign as the interaction range is reduced. Our results imply that the short-distance and long-distance parts of the interaction potential have opposite effects on the CFL state in the presence of C 4 -symmetric anisotropy.

Quantum many-body simulations of the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model in ultracold optical lattices

Understanding quantum many-body states of correlated electrons is one main theme in modern condensed-matter physics. Given that the Fermi-Hubbard model, the prototype of correlated electrons, was recently realized in ultracold optical lattices, it is highly desirable to have controlled numerical methodology to provide precise finite-temperature results upon doping to directly compare with experiments. Here, we demonstrate the exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) algorithm [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. X 8, 031082 (2018)], complemented by independent determinant quantum Monte Carlo, offers a powerful combination of tools for this purpose. XTRG provides full and accurate access to the density matrix and thus various spin and charge correlations, down to an unprecedented low temperature of a few percent of the tunneling energy. Finally, we observe excellent agreement with ultracold fermion measurements at both half filling and finite doping, including the sign-reversal behavior in spin correlations due to formation of magnetic polarons, and the attractive hole-doublon and repulsive hole-hole pairs that are responsible for the peculiar bunching and antibunching behaviors of the antimoments.

Variational quantum simulation of the critical Ising model with symmetry averaging

Here we investigate the use of deep multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (DMERA) circuits as a variational ansatz. We use the exactly solvable one-dimensional critical transverse-field Ising model as a test bed. Numerically exact simulation of the quantum circuit ansatz can in this case be carried out to hundreds of qubits by exploiting efficient classical algorithms for simulating matchgate circuits. We find that, for this system, the DMERA strongly outperforms a standard quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA)–style ansatz, and that a major source of systematic error in correlation functions approximated using the DMERA is the breaking of the translational and Kramers-Wannier symmetries of the transverse-field Ising model. We are able to reduce this error by up to four orders of magnitude by symmetry averaging, without incurring additional cost in qubits or circuit depth. Here, we propose that this technique for mitigating systematic error could be applied to noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) simulations of physical systems with other symmetries.
