RTN-095: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Data Preview 1

We present Rubin Data Preview 1 (DP1), the first release of data from the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, consisting of raw and calibrated single-epoch images, coadds, difference images, detection catalogs, and other derived data products. DP1 is based on 1792 science-grade optical/near-infrared exposures acquired over 48 distinct nights by the Rubin Commissioning Camera, LSSTComCam, on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile during the first on-sky commissioning campaign in late 2024. DP1 covers a total of ~15 sq. deg. over seven roughly equally-sized non-contiguous fields, each independently observed in six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, spanning a range of stellar densities and latitudes and overlapping with external reference datasets. The median image quality across all bands, measured by the FWHM of the point-spread function, is approximately 1.13 arcseconds, with the sharpest images reaching about 0.65 arcseconds. DP1 contains approximately 2.3 million distinct astrophysical objects, of which 1.6 million are extended in at least one band, and 431 solar system objects, of which 93 are new discoveries. DP1 is approximately 3.5 TB in size and available to Rubin data rights holders via the Rubin Science Platform, a cloud-based environment for the analysis of petascale astronomical data. While small compared to future LSST releases, its high quality and diversity of data support a broad range of early science investigations across all four LSST themes, providing a valuable opportunity to engage with Rubin data ahead of the start of full operations in late 2025.

Imaging Transitional Disks with TMT: Lessons Learned from the SEEDS Survey

TMT studies of the early phases of giant planet formation will build on studies carried out in this decade using 8-meter class telescopes. One such study is the Strategic Exploration of Exoplanets and Disks with Subaru transitional disk survey. We have found a wealth of indirect signatures of giant planet presence, including spiral arms, pericenter offsets of the outer disk from the star, and changes in disk color at the inner edge of the outer disk in intermediate-mass PMS star disks. T Tauri star transitional disks are less flamboyant, but are also dynamically colder: any spiral arms in these diskswill be more tightly wound. Imaging such features at the distance of the nearest star-forming regions requires higher angular resolution than achieved with HiCIAO+ AO188. Imaging such disks with extreme AO systems requires use of laser guide stars, and are infeasible with the extreme AO systems currently commissioning on 8-meter class telescopes. Similarly, the JWST and AFTAWFIRST coronagraphs being considered have inner working angles 0.2, and will occult the inner 28 atomic units of systems at d140pc, a region where both high-contrast imagery and ALMA data indicate that giant planets are located in transitional disks. However, studies of transitional disks associated with solar-mass stars and their planet complement are feasible with TMT using NFIRAOS.

NASA's 91-cm. airborne telescope

The Gerard P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), commissioned in May 1975, is the result of the multi-year NASA program of infrared observations from high-flying aircraft. The KAO is a highly modified Lockheed C-141 jet transport, equipped with a 91-cm bent-Cassegrain telescope, as an international facility for research in infrared astronomy. To minimize the effects of aircraft vibration, the telescope is mounted on four pneumatic shock absorbers, and the entire assembly is balanced on the side of a spherical compressed-air bearing, containing a 0.018 mm-thick air film under a pressure of 19 atmospheres. The use of the KAO is not limited to infrared research, its total observable wavelength band extending from the near UV (3000 A) to the millimeter region. Design and technical characteristics of the telescope are discussed, including the image stabilization and target acquisition systems, as well as observational results obtained during the first year of the KAO operation.

Chasing Shadows: Rotation of the Azimuthal Asymmetry in the TW Hya Disk

We have obtained new images of the protoplanetary disk orbiting TW Hya in visible, total intensity light with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), using the newly commissioned BAR5 occulter. These HSTSTIS observations achieved an inner working angle of approximately 0 "2, or11.7 au, probing the system at angular radii coincident with recent images of the disk obtained by ALMA and in polarized intensity near-infrared light. By comparing our new STIS images to those taken with STIS in 2000 and with NICMOS in 1998, 2004, and 2005, we demonstrate that TW Hyas azimuthal surface brightness asymmetry moves coherently in position angle. Between 50 au and 141 au we measure a constant angular velocity in the azimuthal brightness asymmetry of 22.deg7 yr(exp -1) in a counterclockwise direction, equivalent to a period of 15.9yrassuming circular motion. Both the (short) inferred period and lack of radial dependence of the moving shadow pattern are inconsistent with Keplerian rotation at these disk radii. We hypothesize that the asymmetry arises from the fact that the disk interior to 1 au is inclined and precessing owing to a planetary companion, thus partially shadowing the outer disk. Further monitoring of this and other shadows on protoplanetary disks potentially opens anew avenue for indirectly observing the sites of planet formation.

Geant4 Simulations and Experimental Results for the Pacific-Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE)

The Pacific-Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE) is an upcoming large-volume neutrino telescope planned to be built off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. It aims to detect high-energy neutrinos via the Cherenkov radiation produced in water by secondary particles born from high-energy neutrino interactions. Its first set of detectors is planned to be commissioned this year. However, since the telescope is still in its early stages of development, many tests and simulations must still be run to characterize the efficacy of the detectors. One necessary simulation must be devoted towards examining whether the polarization of the incoming Cherenkov light impacts the strength of the signals by the PMTs, and it must be supported by experimental data. In this report, I detail what I have completed during my SULI internship at the Los Alamos National Lab (LANL); I present the preliminary results of a Geant4 polarization simulation as well as preliminary laboratory measurements that will later be used to inform the future P-ONE design.

Performance of the FOS Detectors in a Variable External Magnetic Field

We present the results of an investigation of the in-orbit performance of the Digicon detectors in the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS), conducted as part of the commissioning phase of the Hubble Space Telescope. This paper includes orbital results on detector background noise, sensor image stability, and photometric stability along with several typical FOS observations. New techniques for suppressing cosmic ray induced background and geomagnetic induced image motion in electron tube detectors are also discussed.
