Spacelab cost reduction alternatives study. Volume 3: Crew training task analysis

The on-orbit phase of flight was analyzed to identify the functions that had to be performed to meet flight objectives. The functions identified were combined into a top-level functional flow diagram (3.0 On-Orbit Operations). Each function, in turn, was analyzed to determine the major activities necessary to perform the function. The activities and activity sequences were presented in second level functional flow diagrams. Each major activity was further analyzed to define the operator tasks that are performed to accomplish that activity. Training analysis worksheets were used to document the analysis of each function down to the task level and provide training requirements data for each task. For Vol. 1, see N76-24315.

Feasibility study of modern airships, phase 1. Volume 1: Summary and mission analysis (tasks 2 and 4)

The histroy, potential mission application, and designs of lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicles are researched and evaluated. Missions are identified to which airship vehicles are potentially suited. Results of the mission analysis are combined with the findings of a parametric analysis to formulate the mission/vehicle combinations recommended for further study. Current transportation systems are surveyed and potential areas of competition are identified as well as potential missions resulting from limitations of these systems. Potential areas of military usage are included.

Frame of reference for electronic maps - The relevance of spatial cognition, mental rotation, and componential task analysis

Three experiments are reported that examine the difference between north-up and track-up maps for airborne navigation. The results of the first two experiments, conducted in a basic laboratory setting, identified the cost associated with mental rotation, when a north-up map is used. However, the data suggest that these costs are neither large nor consistent. The third experiment examined a range of tasks in a higher fidelity helicopter flight simulation, and associated the costs of north-up maps with a cognitive component related to orientation, and the costs of track-up maps with a cognitive component related to inconsistent landmark location. Different tasks are associated with different dependence on these components. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for map design, and for cognitive models of navigational processes.

Biowaste resistojet propellant system, biological and functional analysis, task 1 and 2

The influence of chemical contaminants in potential biowaste sources upon the design and interface requirements of a biowaste resistojet propulsion system for a space station and/or base are evaluated. Chemical contaminants are defined as all compounds present in biowaste other than carbon dioxide, water, and methane. The latter are the nominal effluent candidates for the biowaste resistojet.

Biowaste resistojet propellant system biological and functional analysis, task 3

Exhaust flow contamination aspects of the biowaste resistojet are studied by evaluating effects of operating pressure, temperature and composition. Biowaste propellant mixtures considered are comprised of: (1) The Sabatier reactor effluent; (2) the effluent of the cabin carbon dioxide molecular sieve; and (3) water and water vapor from various sources. Results show that plume shapes of resistojet thrusters in the 25 to 100 mlb range exhibit greater apex angles for a given density contour than a scaled inviscid jet. Operation at low thrust, low pressure and high temperature accentuates this pluming due to viscous effects in the nozzle flow. Since the biowaste resistojet effluent is traveling at high velocity in the plume away from the aircraft it is found to be a superior method of damping than the ambient venting.

Feasibility study of modern airships, phase 1. Volume 2: Parametric analysis (task 3)

Various types of lighter-than-air vehicles from fully buoyant to semibuoyant hybrids were examined. Geometries were optimized for gross lifting capabilities for ellipsoidal airships, modified delta planform lifting bodies, and a short-haul, heavy-lift vehicle concept. It is indicated that: (1) neutrally buoyant airships employing a conservative update of materials and propulsion technology provide significant improvements in productivity; (2) propulsive lift for VTOL and aerodynamic lift for cruise significantly improve the productivity of low to medium gross weight ellipsoidal airships; and (3) the short-haul, heavy-lift vehicle, consisting of a simple combination of an ellipsoidal airship hull and existing helicopter componentry, provides significant potential for low-cost, near-term applications for ultra-heavy lift missions.

Operator function modeling: An approach to cognitive task analysis in supervisory control systems

In a study of models of operators in complex, automated space systems, an operator function model (OFM) methodology was extended to represent cognitive as well as manual operator activities. Development continued on a software tool called OFMdraw, which facilitates construction of an OFM by permitting construction of a heterarchic network of nodes and arcs. Emphasis was placed on development of OFMspert, an expert system designed both to model human operation and to assist real human operators. The system uses a blackboard method of problem solving to make an on-line representation of operator intentions, called ACTIN (actions interpreter).

Can Distributed Volunteers Accomplish Massive Data Analysis Tasks?

The science community is accustomed to interacting with the public for two main purposes: outreach to adults (since they are the patrons upon whose good will future funding will depend), and education for children (since they are the reservoir from which the next generation's talent must be drawn). We suggest that a third relationship can now be fruitful, one that has been little used until now - with the notable exception of the astronomy community. Astronomy has a long history of relying on non-professionals for some observations. Important contributions have been made by amateur astronomers in several areas of research including monitoring dust storms on Mars, timing asteroid occultations, and discovering comets. Note that three distinct contributions are being made by amateur astronomers: they supply their own instrumentation, provide access to observing sites around the Globe, and contribute their innate powers of perception.
