Selective laser sintering and spark plasma sintering of (Zr,Nb,Ta,Ti,W)C compositionally complex carbide ceramics

Abstract Two advanced manufacturing processes, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and selective laser sintering (SLS), have been developed for synthesis of (Zr,Nb,Ta,Ti,W)C compositionally complex carbide (CCC) via reactive sintering of a powder mixture of constitute monocarbides. X‐ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the single‐phase CCC can be formed by both SPS and SLS. While a homogenous microstructure with uniform metal element distributions was developed during SPS, three‐layer microstructures with a thin TiC‐rich layer and two TaC‐rich layers along with a TiO 2 ‐rich surface layer containing W nanoparticles were formed during SLS. In addition, cellular structures with W, Zr, and Ti element segregation and dislocations on cell boundaries were observed in the SLS‐CCC sample, indicating the effect of nonequilibrium conditions on microstructure formation during laser melting followed by rapid cooling and solidification process. Compared to the SPS‐CCC sample, the SLS‐CCC showed enhanced hardness and reduced thermal conductivity, which may be related to their unique cellular structures.

Neuromorphic ionic computing in droplet interface synapses

Ionic devices with memory capabilities can emulate neural functionality, enabling neuromorphic computing and biomedical applications. In this study, we report an ionic spiking synapse based on aqueous droplet interface bilayer assembly. Under stepwise triangular voltages, the device displays coupled memcapacitive-memristive behavior, showing noncrossing pinched hysteretic I-V loops. This hysteretic ion dynamics can be regulated by modifying bilayer components, reconstituting protein channels, or adjusting droplet assembly configuration. Droplet interface synapses (DIS) exhibit fundamental neuromorphic behaviors such as paired-pulse facilitation/depression, spike rate–dependent plasticity, Hebbian learning, and short-term associative learning under classical conditioning. We also used reservoir computing with DIS to implement two learning algorithms: a classification algorithm that recognizes handwritten digits and a reinforcement learning algorithm that learns to play a board game of tic-tac-toe.

First comprehensive identification of cardiac proteins with putative increased O-GlcNAc levels during pressure overload hypertrophy

Protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) by O-GlcNAc globally rise during pressure-overload hypertrophy (POH). However, a major knowledge gap exists on the specific proteins undergoing changes in O-GlcNAc levels during POH primarily because this PTM is low abundance and easily lost during standard mass spectrometry (MS) conditions used for protein identification. Methodologies have emerged to enrich samples for O-GlcNAcylated proteins prior to MS analysis. Accordingly, our goal was to identify the specific proteins undergoing changes in O-GlcNAc levels during POH. We used C57/Bl6 mice subjected to Sham or transverse aortic constriction (TAC) to create POH. From the hearts, we labelled the O-GlcNAc moiety with tetramethylrhodamine azide (TAMRA) before sample enrichment by TAMRA immunoprecipitation (IP). We used LC-MS/MS to identify and quantify the captured putative O-GlcNAcylated proteins. We identified a total of 700 putative O-GlcNAcylated proteins in Sham and POH. Two hundred thirty-three of these proteins had significantly increased enrichment in POH over Sham suggesting higher O-GlcNAc levels whereas no proteins were significantly decreased by POH. We examined two MS identified metabolic enzymes, CPT1B and the PDH complex, to validate by immunoprecipitation. We corroborated increased O-GlcNAc levels during POH for CPT1B and the PDH complex. Enzyme activity assays suggests higher O-GlcNAcylation increases CPT1 activity and decreases PDH activity during POH. In summary, we generated the first comprehensive list of proteins with putative changes in O-GlcNAc levels during POH. Our results demonstrate the large number of potential proteins and cellular processes affected by O-GlcNAc and serve as a guide for testing specific O-GlcNAc-regulated mechanisms during POH.

Benchmark Testing on the IBM-Q Network

The goal of this project is to evaluate a proposed set of candidate benchmarks being developed by the Standards and Performance Metrics Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C), of which LANL is a member. The QED-C Standards and Performance Metrics TAG has developed implementations of several benchmark codes with the hope and expectation that these codes will be helpful to QED-C members interested in investigating various quantum computer platforms. The benchmark set will be run on LANL’s access to the IBM-Q system with the intent to evaluate the set for scalability, correct execution, and coverage of the application space. The goal is for the QED-C Standards and Performance Metrics TAC to be able to produce a coherent, consistent, scalable set of benchmarks that will run on multiple quantum computing platforms and will be available to members of QED-C, including LANL.

Mobility Data and Models Informing Smart Cities

This presentation explores the interactions of Emerging Technology, Changing Urban Environments, and Urban Travel Behavior on Mobility and Energy Impacts. Key findings include quantifying impacts of emerging mobility, access and infrastructure associated with new mobility choices and services in urban areas. The results demonstrate new data collection methods and capabilities to understand and identify key levers to improve energy productivity of future mobility systems and of quickly evolving MaaS and COVID-19 contexts to monitor rapidly shifting urban mobility patterns. Under development are mode choice models for new modes versus traditional modes. Initial estimates are developed on the potential of workforce mobility strategies in shaping future energy-efficient mobility system impacts. For mode replacement and workforce mobility, this presentation offers observability into the changes in number of transactions per mode, after ride-hailing/TNC/MaaS introduction and in origins of workforce to enable user need-driven reimagining of efficient mobility systems: Seattle (SEA-TAC) airport: for every 100 new TNC transactions for ground transportation, ~27% replaced transit, 35% replaced parking, 17% replaced car rentals, and 21% replaced taxis. Similarly, at Denver International (DEN), ride-hailing transactions replaced transit, parking, car rental and taxis at a rate of 34.7%, 39.0%, 16.6%, and 9.7%, respectively. A workforce mobility tool, analysis/visualization techniques, and capabilities to understand and identify key job commute needs, new choices in access to job opportunities, and affordability aspects as levers to improve energy productivity of future integrated urban mobility systems.

Subcritical Assembly at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation discusses the US Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP), specifically regarding the training and education courses. Also discussed is the AGN-201M reactor and fuel disk. Additionally, the ORSA conceptual design and design changes are presented. In conclusion, the ORSA design has moved from conceptual to implementable. ORSA hands-on experiments will remain subcritical under normal and credible abnormal conditions. The ORSA location will have minimal security and safety basis impact and is feasible for a diversity of students. The implementation of ORSA will improve upon NCSP T&E’s vision to remain adaptable and responsive.
