Time-resolved magneto-optical effects in the altermagnet candidate MnTe

α -MnTe is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor with above room temperature T N = 310 K, which is promising for spintronic applications. Recently, it was reported to be an altermagnet, containing bands with momentum-dependent spin splitting; time-resolved experimental probes of MnTe are, therefore, important both for understanding novel magnetic properties and potential device applications. Here, we investigate ultrafast spin dynamics in epitaxial MnTe(001)/InP(111) thin films using pump-probe magneto-optical measurements in the Kerr configuration. At room temperature, we observe an oscillation mode at 55 GHz that does not appear at zero magnetic field. Combining field and polarization dependence, we identify this mode as a magnon, likely originating from inverse stimulated Raman scattering. Magnetic field-dependent oscillations persist up to at least 335 K, which could reflect coupling to known short-range magnetic order in MnTe above T N . Additionally, we observe two optical phonons at 3.6 and 4.2 THz, which broaden and redshift with increasing temperature.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

Imaging a terahertz superfluid plasmon in a two-dimensional superconductor

The superconducting gap defines the fundamental energy scale for the emergence of dissipationless transport and collective phenomena in a superconductor. In layered high-temperature cuprate superconductors, in which the Cooper pairs are confined to weakly coupled two-dimensional (2D) copper–oxygen (CuO 2 ) planes, terahertz (THz) spectroscopy at subgap millielectronvolt (meV) energies has provided crucial insights into the collective superfluid response perpendicular to the superconducting layers. However, within the CuO 2 planes, the collective superfluid response manifests as plasmonic charge oscillations at energies far exceeding the superconducting gap, obscured by strong dissipation. Here, in this study, we present spectroscopic evidence of a below-gap, 2D superfluid plasmon in few-layer Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x and spatially resolve its deeply subdiffractive THz electrodynamics. By placing the superconductor in the near field of a spintronic THz emitter, we reveal this distinct resonance—absent in bulk samples and observed only in the superconducting phase—and determine its plasmonic nature by mapping the geometric anisotropy and dispersion. Crucially, these measurements offer a direct view of the momentum-dependent and frequency-dependent superconducting transition in two dimensions.

Electrodynamics of photo-carriers in multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3

Understanding and controlling the antiferromagnetic order in multiferroic materials on an ultrafast time scale is a long standing area of interest, due to their potential applications in spintronics and ultrafast magnetoelectric switching. We present an optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe study on multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3 . The optical pump predominantly excites the d-d transitions of the Mn 3+ ions, and the temporal evolution of the pump-induced transient conductivity is measured with a subsequent THz pulse. Two distinct, temperature-dependent decay times are revealed. The shorter relaxation time corresponds to spin-lattice thermalization, while the longer one is ascribed to electron-hole recombination. A spin-selection rule in the relaxation process is proposed in the magnetic phase. Slight suppression of the electromagnons was observed after the optical pump pulse within the spin-lattice thermalization time scale. These observed fundamental magnetic processes can shed light on ultrafast control of magnetism and photoinduced phase transitions in multiferroics.
