Noncollinear polar magnet Fe 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O) 3 with inequivalent Fe 3+ sites

The emergence of novel magnetic states becomes more likely when the inversion symmetry of the crystal field, relative to the center between two spins, is broken. We propose that placing magnetic spins in inequivalent sites in a polar lattice can promote a realization of nontrivial magnetic states and associated magnetic properties. To test our hypothesis, we study Fe 2 (SeO 3 )(H 2 O) 3 as a model system that displays two distinct Fe(1) and Fe(2) magnetic sites in a polar structure (R3c space group). At low fields μ 0 H≤ 0.06 T, the material undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering with T N1 = 77 K and a second transition at T N2 ≈ 4 K. At μ 0 H≥ 0.06 T and 74 K ≤T≤ 76 K, a positive entropy change of ∼0.12 mJ mol −1 K −1 can be associated with a metamagnetic transition to possibly nontrivial spin states. At zero field, Fe(1) is nearly fully ordered at T≈ 25 K, while Fe(2) features magnetic frustration down to T = 4 K. The magnetic ground state, a result corroborated by single-crystal neutron diffraction and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, is a noncollinear antiparallel arrangement of ferrimagnetic Fe(1)–Fe(2) dimers along the c-axis. The results demonstrate that placing distinct magnetic sites in a polar crystal lattice can enable a new pathway to modifying spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom for unconventional magnetism.

Trap‐Engineering the Persistent Luminescence of Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Tb 3+ via Al 3+ Substitution for Optical Data Storage

Abstract Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) materials hold great potential for optical data storage (ODS) and anticounterfeiting applications. Nevertheless, the scarcity of suitable luminescent materials with deep‐level traps remains a significant obstacle. Herein, a host substation strategy have been employed to tune the persistent luminescence (PersL) and OSL properties of Ca 3 Ga 4 O 9 :Tb 3+ by Al 3+ substitution through trap engineering and demonstrated their potential. Specifically, the photoluminescence of the Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ of Tb 3+ is first investigated due to its different occupancies of Ca 2+ . The influence of host substitution on the crystal structure, trap depth, trap density, PersL, and OSL properties have further investigated. A series of strong PersL and OSL peaks from the Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ with bluish‐green emissions have been observed. The Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ have shown controllable photon release upon thermal and optical stimuli, enhancing their performance for ODS. Thermally stimulated luminescence suggests that vacancy and defect concentrations inside the Ca 3‐x% (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :x%Tb 3+ can be manipulated by Tb 3+ doping and Al 3+ substitution, which ultimately leads to the formation of deep traps and a broad distribution of traps with increased deep trap concentration. The work demonstrates that trap engineering through Al 3 ⁺ substitution is an effective method for tuning PersL and OSL properties of Ca 2.985 (Ga 1‐y% Al y% ) 4 O 9 :0.5%Tb 3+ for ODS.

Elucidating the local structure of Li 1+ x Al x Ti 2– x (PO 4 ) 3 and Li 3 Al x Ti 2– x (PO 4 ) 3 ( x = 0, 0.3) via total scattering

Li 1+x Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) and Li 3 Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 (x = 0, 0.3) are promising candidates in all-solid-state batteries due to their high room temperature conductivity of 10 –3 S cm –1 and air- and moisture-stability. They also exhibit unusual thermal expansion properties, with Li 1+x Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 showing near-zero thermal expansion along the a axis while Li 3 Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 exhibits polynomial positive thermal expansion along the a axis and polynomial negative thermal expansion along the c axis. A crucial component to understanding these properties is understanding the local structure. Total scattering is a powerful analytical technique as it provides information on the long-range, average structure as well as the local structure. Here, we report the first X-ray and neutron total scattering experiments performed on Li 1+x Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 and Li 3 Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 (x = 0, 0.3). We show that the PO 4 and TiO 6 polyhedra experience very little expansion of the P/Ti–O bonds up to 800 °C, nor is there much expansion when the Li content increases significantly. The minor thermal expansion of the nearest-neighbor bonds of the polyhedra is revealed to be the reason behind the unusual thermal expansion properties, causing the near-zero thermal expansion along a in Li 1+x Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 and moving as whole units in Li 3 Al x Ti 2–x (PO 4 ) 3 . The structural robustness of the framework is also the reason for the increased conductivity as Li content increases, as the framework remains undistorted as Li content increases, permitting Li-ion mobility as the number of charge carriers increases. Finally, this suggests that phosphate-based framework materials beyond LATP would also be a good material space to explore for new Li-ion (and other ion-) conducting materials.

Electronic properties of corundum-like Ir 2 O 3 and Ir 2 O 3 -Ga 2 O 3 alloys

In the hexagonal, corundum-like structure, α-Ga 2 O 3 has a bandgap of ~5.1 eV, which, combined with its relatively small electron effective mass, high Baliga's figure of merit, and high breakdown field, makes it a promising candidate for power electronics. Ga 2 O 3 is easy to dope n-type, but impossible to dope p-type, impeding the realization of some electronic device designs. Developing a lattice-matched p-type material that forms a high-quality heterojunction with n-type Ga 2 O 3 would open new opportunities in electronics and perhaps optoelectronic devices. In this work, we studied Ir 2 O 3 as a candidate for that purpose. Using hybrid density functional theory calculations we predict the electronic band structure of α-Ir 2 O 3 and compare that to α-Ga 2 O 3 , and study the stability and electronic properties of α-(Ir x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 alloys. We discuss the band offset between the two materials and compare it with recently available experimental data. We find that the Ir d bands that compose the top of the valence band in α-Ir 2 O 3 are much higher in energy than O p bands in α-Ga 2 O 3 , possibly enabling effective p-type doping. Finally, our results provide an insight into using the Ir 2 O 3 or Ir 2 O 3 -Ga 2 O 3 alloys as p-type material lattice-matched to α-Ga 2 O 3 for the realization of p–n heterojunctions.

Photoluminescence of Cr 3+ in β-Ga 2 O 3 and (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 under pressure

The effects of pressure on single crystals of Cr-doped gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ ) and aluminum gallium oxide [(Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 ] were examined by measuring the wavelength shift in the spectral R lines. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these materials were collected from samples in diamond anvil cells at pressures up to 9 GPa. The β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ R lines were found to shift linearly under hydrostatic pressure. The (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 R lines also show a linear shift but the R 1 line shifted less than for β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ . The ratio of R 2 to R 1 peak areas vs pressure is dominated by nonradiative recombination. X-ray diffraction measurements of (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 indicate that its equation of state is similar to that of β-Ga 2 O 3 . β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ was examined under non-hydrostatic conditions by using mineral oil as a pressure transmitting medium. Similar to the case in ruby, the R 1 line is much more sensitive to non-hydrostatic stress than R 2 . Spatially resolved PL of a sample at 8 GPa in mineral oil showed significant variations in the R 1 emission wavelength. Furthermore, these results suggest that the R 1 line can serve as a sensitive probe of alloy composition and non-hydrostatic stress, while the R 2 line is insensitive to these perturbations.

Study of saturated-absorption resonances on the {sup 3}P{sub 0, 1, 2} – {sup 3}D{sub 1, 2, 3} transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell

The saturated-absorption resonances on the {sup 3}P{sub 0, 1, 2} – {sup 3}D{sub 1, 2, 3} transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell are studied. The line width (FWHM) for the observed saturated-absorption resonance on the 3{sup 3}P{sub 0} → 3{sup 3}D{sub 1} transition turns out to be ∼220 MHz. Experiments are performed using a system based on a 766-nm diode laser with amplification and frequency doubling in a nonlinear BiBO crystal. The results obtained are of interest for sub-Doppler cooling on the 3{sup 3}P{sub 2} → 3{sup 3}D{sub 3} transition. (paper)

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

Role of Surface Features on the Initial Dissolution of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite in Liquid Water: An Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study

In this study, the degradation of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) hybrid organic inorganic perovskite (HOIP) by water has been the major issue hampering its use in commercial perovskites solar cells (PSCs) as MAPbI 3 HOIP have been known to easily degrade in the presence of water molecules. However, even though there have been numerous studies investigating this phenomenon, there is still no consensus on the mechanisms of initial stages of dissolution. Here, we attempt to consolidate differing mechanistic interpretations previously reported in the literature through the use of the first-principles constrained ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) to study the mechanisms, kinetics, and thermodynamics that accompany the degradation of MAPbI 3 HOIP in liquid water. We consider not only the dissolution of the species found on the pristine MAPbI 3 HOIP surfaces, but also the dissolution from defect sites to imitate the successive degradation steps, and propose a sequence of events in the initial phase of MAPbI 3 HOIP dissolution. By comparing the dissolution free energy barrier between surface species of different surficial types, we find that the dominant dissolution mechanisms of surface species varies widely based on the specific surface features adjacent to the dissolving ion. The high sensitivity of dissolution mechanism to surface features has contributed to the many dissolution mechanisms proposed in the literature. In contrast, the dissolution free energy barriers are mainly determined by the dissolving species rather than the type of surfaces, and the type of surfaces the ions are dissolving from are inconsequential toward the dissolution free energy barrier. However, the presence of surface defects such as vacancy sites are found to significantly lower the dissolution free energy barriers. Based on the estimated dissolution free energy barriers from different types of surfaces that we investigated in this study, we proposed that the dissolution of MAPbI 3 HOIP in liquid water originates from surface defect sites that propagate laterally along the surface layer of the MAPbI 3 HOIP crystal.

Photoluminescence spectroscopy of Cr 3+ in β-Ga 2 O 3 and (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3

Alloying β-Ga 2 O 3 with Al 2 O 3 to create (Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 enables ultra-wide bandgap materials suitable for applications deep into ultraviolet. In this work, photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Cr 3+ were investigated in monoclinic single crystal β-Ga 2 O 3 , and 10 = mol. % Al 2 O 3 alloyed with β-Ga 2 O 3 , denoted β-(Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 or AGO. Temperature-dependent PL properties were studied for Cr 3+ in AGO and β-Ga 2 O 3 from 295 to 16 K. For both materials at room temperature, the red-line emission doublet R 1 and R 2 occurs at 696 nm (1.78 eV) and 690 nm (1.80 eV), respectively, along with a broad emission band at 709 nm (1.75 eV). Here, the linewidths for AGO are larger for all temperatures due to alloy broadening. For both materials, the R-lines blue-shift with decreasing temperature. The (lowest energy) R 1 line is dominant at low temperatures due to the thermal population of the levels. For temperatures above ~50 K, however, the ratio of R 2 to R 1 peak areas is dominated by nonradiative combination.

Potential Skyrmion Host Fe(IO3)3: Connecting Stereoactive Lone-Pair Electron Effects to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Magnetic skyrmions, which are topologically distinct magnetic spin textures, are gaining increased attention for their unique physical properties and potential applications in spintronic devices. Here we present a design strategy for skyrmion host candidates based on combinations of magnetic spin, asymmetric building units having stereoactive lone-pair electrons, and polar lattice symmetry. To demonstrate the viability of the proposed rational design principles, we successfully synthesized a Fe(IO 3 ) 3 polycrystalline sample and single crystals by using a new simplified low-temperature pathway, which is experimentally feasible for extending materials growth of transition metal iodates. Single crystal X-ray and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that Fe(IO 3 ) 3 crystallizes in the polar chiral hexagonal lattice with space group P63. The combined structural features of the macroscopic electric polarization along the c-axis stemming from the coalignment of the stereoactive lone-pairs of the IO 3 – trigonal pyramid and the magnetic Fe 3+ cation residing on the 3-fold rotation axis were selected to promote asymmetric exchange coupling. We find evidence of a predicted skyrmion phase at 14 K ≤ T ≤ 16 K and 2.5 T ≤ μ 0 H ≤ 3.2 T driven by a Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction, a conclusion supported by the appreciable DM exchange and the zero-field spiral antiferromagnetic ground state of Fe(IO 3 ) 3 deduced from neutron diffraction experiments. The associated magnetic modulation wavelength of the putative skyrmions is expected to be short ~18 nm, comparable to the period of the DM-driven incommensurate order. This work links stereoactive lone-pair electron effects to enhanced DM interaction, demonstrating a new approach for chemical guidelines in the search for skyrmionic states of matter.

Role of CeNiSi 2 and BaNiSn 3 Structure Types in the Emergent Magnetism of the Homologous Series Ln n +1 M n X 3 n +1 :Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10

The synthesis and characterization of Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 , n =3 member of the homologous series Ln n+1 M n X 3n+1 (Ln = lanthanides, M = transition metal, X = tetrel), is reported. The structure can be modelled with the Cmcm space group adopting the Eu 2 Ni 2-x Sn 5 structure type, with lattice parameters of a = 4.3323 (15) Å, b = 35.507 (9) Å, and c = 4.3069 (12) Å. Members of the series for n > 2 consist of stacking of ordered (CeNiSi 2 type) and disordered (BaNiSn 3 / AuCu 3 type) subunits with the acting as a “spacer” between CeNiSi 2 subunits. Although neither CeFeGe 3 nor CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 order magnetically down to 2 K, Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 is an antiferromagnet below 3.6 K. To rationalize the emergent magnetism: (i) we established the Kondo and RKKY interaction dominant regions for the Ce analogues adopting the BaNiSn 3 and CeNiSi 2 by creating an electronic landscape for each, (ii) mapped the strained subunits, due to stacking, within the series. Here, we established the CeFeGe 3 subunit within Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 contracts and is located within the Kondo-interaction dominant region, while the CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 subunit expands and is in the RKKY-interaction dominant region.

Altered Stability and Degradation Pathway of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 in Contact with Metal Oxide

Degradation in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ), when in contact with commonly used metal oxide transport layer materials in optoelectronic devices, is explored experimentally and theoretically. On the basis of the decomposition temperature, the interfacial stability decreases in the following order: MAPbI 3 + TiO 2 ~ MAPbI 3 alone > MAPbI 3 + SnO 2 > MAPbI 3 + NiO, consistent with thermodynamic data. When MAPbI 3 contacts NiO or SnO 2 , experimental results unequivocally show interfacial decomposition occurs at a lower temperature than bulk decomposition and produces different degradation products. Density functional theory calculations reveal an altered reaction pathway on oxide surfaces and elucidate the difference between NiO and TiO 2 . Furthermore, these results pinpoint the importance of understanding the interaction between halide perovskite and other materials used in a device to achieve intrinsically stable devices.

Pressure-Driven Helium Insertion for Structural Stability of CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 Hybrid Perovskites

Organic−inorganic metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have garnered significant attention due to their outstanding performance in optoelectronic devices, but they are prone to degradation through a variety of pathways. High-pressure studies are being used to understand the mechanical and structural stability of MHPs and investigate new methods for improving these. In this study, we map the high-pressure, low-temperature structural phase diagram of CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3 ) between 15−300 K and up to 1.5 GPa. We first compare the temperature and pressure effects on the global and local structures of MAPbBr 3 using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), respectively, and find evidence of PbBr 6 octahedral distortion. Our results also suggest that He inserts into the MAPbBr 3 structure. The thermodynamics of He insertion into MAPBHe x are calculated to be plausible at room temperature for x ≤ 1 and P = 1−3 GPa and shown to stabilize higher-symmetry phases. This phenomenon increases the fitted bulk modulus of MAPbBr 3 . Structural stabilization by inert atom insertion is proposed as a method to improve the mechanical robustness of MHPs and other soft hybrid materials.

Stabilization of NbTe 3 , VTe 3 , and TiTe 3 via Nanotube Encapsulation

The structure of MX 3 transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs, with M a transition metal and X a chalcogen) is typified by one-dimensional (1D) chains weakly bound together via van der Waals interactions. This structural motif is common across a range of M and X atoms (e.g. NbSe 3 , HfTe 3 , TaS 3 ), but not all M and X combinations are stable. We report here that three new members of the MX 3 family which are not stable in bulk, specifically NbTe 3 , VTe 3 , and TiTe 3 , can be synthesized in the few- to single-chain limit via nano-confined growth within the stabilizing cavity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) reveal the chain-like nature and the detailed atomic structure. The synthesized materials exhibit behavior unique to few-chain quasi-1D structures, such as multi-chain spiraling and a trigonal anti-prismatic rocking distortion in the single-chain limit. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insight into the crystal structure and stability of the materials, as well as their electronic structure.

Crystal structure of danofloxacin mesylate (C 19 H 21 FN 3 O 3 )(CH 3 O 3 S)

The crystal structure of danofloxacin mesylate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Danofloxacin mesylate crystallizes in space group P1 (#1) with a = 6.77474(8), b = 12.4973(4), c = 12.82826(28) Å, α = 84.8709(29), β = 87.7501(10), γ = 74.9916(4)°, V = 1044.723(11) Å 3 , and Z = 2. The protonation of the danofloxacin cations was established by the analysis of potential intermolecular interactions and differs from that expected from isolated-cation calculations. The crystal structure consists of alternating layers of cations and anions parallel to the ac-plane. There is parallel stacking of the oxoquinoline rings along the a-axis. The expected N–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds between the cations and anions are not present. Each cation makes an N–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bond with the other cation, resulting in zig-zag chains along the a-axis. Both cations have strong intramolecular O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds. There are several C–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds between the danofloxacin cations and mesylate anions. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Achieving Multimodal and Multicolor Luminescence in LaAlO 3 :Pr 3+ , Gd 3+ via Trap Engineering and Energy Transfer

Achieving multimodal luminescence within a single phosphor is vital for multifunctional applications but remains challenging due to complex color tuning and trap engineering. In this study, we report Pr 3+ and Gd 3+ co‐doped LaAlO 3 (LAO:PG) phosphors, designed through careful modulation of multilevel traps and Pr 3+ → Gd 3+ energy transfer dynamics. These materials exhibit diverse luminescence modes, including down‐conversion luminescence (DCL), up‐conversion luminescence (UCL), persistent luminescence (PersL), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) across a wide spectral range. Unlike previously studied Pr 3+ ‐doped LAO, the co‐doped LAO:PG shows DCL in both UV‐visible and NIR regions and displays ultraviolet‐C UCL under visible excitation. Notably, we observe, for the first time, PersL lasting several minutes in these phosphors—an improvement over the non‐PersL behavior of Pr 3+ ‐only doped LAO. Additionally, the LAO:PG phosphors exhibit strong OSL response. TSL analysis reveals five distinct trap levels linked to these properties. Density functional theory calculations further correlate intrinsic defects to these traps, supporting a proposed mechanism for the observed multimodal luminescence. These findings highlight LAO:PG as a promising platform for developing advanced phosphors with integrated luminescence modes, paving the way for future applications in data storage, phototherapy, and anti‐counterfeiting technologies.

Feld-induced modulation of two-dimensional electron gas at LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface by polar distortion of LaAlO 3

Since the discovery of two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface, its intriguing physical properties have garnered significant interests for device applications. Yet, understanding its response to electrical stimuli remains incomplete. Our in-situ transmission electron microscopy analysis of a LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 two-dimensional electron gas device under electrical bias reveals key insights. Inline electron holography visualized the field-induced modulation of two-dimensional electron gas at the interface, while electron energy loss spectroscopy showed negligible electromigration of oxygen vacancies. Instead, atom-resolved imaging indicated that electric fields trigger polar distortion in the LaAlO 3 layer, affecting two-dimensional electron gas modulation. This study refutes the previously hypothesized role of oxygen vacancies, underscoring the lattice flexibility of LaAlO 3 and its varied polar distortions under electric fields as central to two-dimensional electron gas dynamics. These findings open pathways for advanced oxide nanoelectronics, exploiting the interplay of polar and nonpolar distortions in LaAlO 3 .
