Applications of nonlinear systems theory to control design

For most applications in the control area, the standard practice is to approximate a nonlinear mathematical model by a linear system. Since the feedback linearizable systems contain linear systems as a subclass, the procedure of approximating a nonlinear system by a feedback linearizable one is examined. Because many physical plants (e.g., aircraft at the NASA Ames Research Center) have mathematical models which are close to feedback linearizable systems, such approximations are certainly justified. Results and techniques are introduced for measuring the gap between the model and its truncated linearizable part. The topic of pure feedback systems is important to the study.

Algebraic methods in system theory

Investigations on problems of the type which arise in the control of switched electrical networks are reported. The main results concern the algebraic structure and stochastic aspects of these systems. Future reports will contain more detailed applications of these results to engineering studies.

Application of dynamical systems theory to a very low energy transfer

We use lobe dynamics in the restricted three-body problem to design orbits with prescribed itineraries with respect to the resonance regions within a Hill's region. the application we envision is the design of a low energy trajectory to orbit three of Jupiter's moons using the patched three-body approximation. We introduce the "switching region," the P2BA analogue to the "spere of influence."

Current theories of man-machine systems

Theories and models conventionally employed to analyze man machine systems such as remotely manned vehicles and processes are reviewed. Basic ideas of supervisory or heirarchical manning, and needs for modeling are discussed.

Mathematical correlation of modal parameter identification methods via system realization theory

A unified approach is introduced using system realization theory to derive and correlate modal parameter identification methods for flexible structures. Several different time-domain and frequency-domain methods are analyzed and treated. A basic mathematical foundation is presented which provides insight into the field of modal parameter identification for comparison and evaluation. The relation among various existing methods is established and discussed. This report serves as a starting point to stimulate additional research towards the unification of the many possible approaches for modal parameter identification.
