A Vibrational Energy Harvesting Sensor Based on Linear and Rotational Electromechanical Effects

In this investigation, a magnetically coupled double-spring design is presented for harvesting low-level non-stationary random vibrational energy. The sensor relies on multimodal coupling between the translation and rotation of a two-spring magnet and coil system to widen the harvesting bandwidth. Energy methods are used to develop a model to characterize the electromechanical response of the system, the solution of which is obtained using stochastic techniques based on a particle swarm algorithm. This approach provides an efficient method to estimate system parameters that otherwise are difficult or impossible to determine with independent measurements. The experimental results demonstrate agreement with the theoretical predictions over a limited bandwidth. The sensor can effectively harvest non-stationary vibration energy down to 10 -4 g within a limited bandwidth of 130–150 Hz. The sensor prototype has an operational volume of 2.6 cm 3 with a calculated power density of 0.2 W/cm 3 . The sensor’s small size results in a coupling efficiency of approximately 6% across the tested bandwidth.

CRGTBSO3 TBS Ozone Data

The Tethered Balloon System (TBS) operated for two weeks during a summer IOP of the CoURAGE campaign. This dataset includes data collected from an En-Sci electrochemical cell (ECC) ozonesonde on the TBS. The ozonesonde was connected to an iMet-4RSB radiosonde, and the overall data collected included ozone, relative humidity, temperature, and altitude. The data from the iMet is the same as that found in the TBSMERGED data product. The TBS also had another instrument (iMet XQ2) that collected meteorological data, which may have more accurate relative humidity (RH) data. This ozonesonde data set is intended to complement the TBSMERGED data product, the CRGTBSO3 surface ozone measurements, and the CoURAGE SWARM ozone lidar (TOLNet) measurements from other locations.

ZEUS: An Efficient GPU Optimization Method Integrating PSO, BFGS, and Automatic Differentiation

We introduce a novel, efficient computational method, ZEUS, for numerical optimization, and provide an open-source implementation. It has four key ingredients: (1) particle swarm optimization (PSO), (2) the use of the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method, (3) automatic differentiation (AD), and (4) GPUs. Our approach addresses the computational challenges inherent in high-dimensional, non-convex optimization problems. In the first phase of the algorithm, we get a potentially good set of starting points using PSO. Thereafter, we run BFGS independently in parallel from these starting points. BFGS is one of the best-performing algorithms for numerical optimization. However, it requires the gradient of the function being optimized. ZEUS integrates automatic differentiation into BFGS thus avoiding the need for the user to calculate derivatives explicitly. The use of GPUs allows ZEUS to speed up the calculations substantially. We carry out systematic studies to explore the trade-offs between the number of PSO iterations taken, starting points, and BFGS iteration depth. We show that a handful of iterations of PSO can improve global convergence when combined with BFGS. We also present performance studies using common test functions. Hydrodynamic Analysis and Optimization of Aquantis Marine Turbine: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The primary aim of this proposal is to improve the accurate prediction of hydrodynamic performance and dynamic load responses of the AQ10 floating axial-flow tidal turbine with a tri-cat mooring configuration. The validation of reduced-order modeling approaches with high-fidelity model will be implemented. Additionally, the frequency response domain, Response Amplitude Floating Wind (RAFT) toolbox plus an optimizer expanded for marine hydrokinetic turbines under the Submarine Hydrokinetic And Riverine Kilo-megawatt. Systems (SHARKS) program will be used for designing and exploring different key design parameters (platform dimension, mooring layout and its parameters) of next marine hydrokinetic (MHK) turbine generation.
