Space Station - A focus for the development of structural dynamics scale model technology for large flexible space structures

The paper discusses the scale model technology being developed at the NASA Langley Research Center in support of the development of structural dynamic prediction methods for large flexible space structures. Space Station is used as a focus. The Dynamic Scale Model Technology (DSMT) Program is described; results of the effect of scaling Space Station components are presented; and supporting scale model technology development activities are described and results presented. The conceptual design of a hybrid-scale Pathfinder model for developing test techniques and suspension methods is also discussed, and a summary of the broad application of the scale model technology being developed is presented.

NASA Handbook for Spacecraft Structural Dynamics Testing

Recent advances in the area of structural dynamics and vibrations, in both methodology and capability, have the potential to make spacecraft system testing more effective from technical, cost, schedule, and hardware safety points of view. However, application of these advanced test methods varies widely among the NASA Centers and their contractors. Identification and refinement of the best of these test methodologies and implementation approaches has been an objective of efforts by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on behalf of the NASA Office of the Chief Engineer. But to develop the most appropriate overall test program for a flight project from the selection of advanced methodologies, as well as conventional test methods, spacecraft project managers and their technical staffs will need overall guidance and technical rationale. Thus, the Chief Engineer's Office has recently tasked JPL to prepare a NASA Handbook for Spacecraft Structural Dynamics Testing. An outline of the proposed handbook, with a synopsis of each section, has been developed and is presented herein. Comments on the proposed handbook are solicited from the spacecraft structural dynamics testing community.

Concurrent and vectorized mixed time, explicit nonlinear structural dynamics algorithms

A nonlinear structural dynamics program with an element library that exploits parallel processing is described. The aim is to exploit scheduling-allocation so that parallel processing and vectorization can effectively be treated in a general purpose program with explicit time integration and different time steps in different parts of the mesh. The program uses an element group scheme, which, as a by-product, also provides an automatic scheme for assigning different time steps to different parts of the mesh. The program has been tested on the Alliant FX/8; it shows a fivefold improvement in speed over compiler optimization.

Preliminary shuttle structural dynamics modeling design study

The design and development of a structural dynamics model of the space shuttle are discussed. The model provides for early study of structural dynamics problems, permits evaluation of the accuracy of the structural and hydroelastic analysis methods used on test vehicles, and provides for efficiently evaluating potential cost savings in structural dynamic testing techniques. The discussion is developed around the modes in which major input forces and responses occur and the significant structural details in these modes.

Research needs in aerospace structural dynamics

The perspective of a NASA Ad Hoc Study Committee on future research needs in structural dynamics within the aerospace industry is presented. It identifies the common aspects of the design process across the industry and establishes the role of structural dynamics in it through a discussion of various design considerations having their basis in structural dynamics. The specific structural dynamics issues involved in these considerations are identified and assessed as to their current technological status and trends. Projections of future requirements based on this assessment are made and areas of research to meet them are identified.

Structural dynamic and aeroelastic considerations for hypersonic vehicles

Structural dynamic and aeroelastic considerations applicable to hypersonic vehicles are discussed. Emphasis is given to aerospace plane configurations. The definition of aerothermoelasticity and the operational flight environment are reviewed, and structural dynamic and aeroelastic areas of concern are individually discussed, including vibration, landing and taxiing, propellant dynamics, acoustics, lifting surface flutter, panel flutter, control surface buzz, buffeting, gust response, and static aeroelasticity. Recent research results from all-moveable delta-wing aerolastic studies, engine inlet lip aeroelastic analysis, and studies of thermal effects on vibration frequencies, aerodynamic heating effects on flutter, and active control of aeroelastic response are reviewed.

SPS structural dynamics and control workshop: Findings and recommendations

The structural dynamics and control of the Solar Power Satellite (SPS), a concept which holds promise for meeting a portion of the energy needs of the United States beyond the year 2000 are examined. The assumptions, methodologies and conclusions of existing SPS studies in the areas of structural dynamics and control (with structural design and materials also being considered) are assessed.

Analysis of structural dynamic data from Skylab. Volume 1: Technical discussion

A compendium of Skylab structural dynamics analytical and test programs is presented. These programs are assessed to identify lessons learned from the structural dynamic prediction effort and to provide guidelines for future analysts and program managers of complex spacecraft systems. It is a synopsis of the structural dynamic effort performed under the Skylab Integration contract and specifically covers the development, utilization, and correlation of Skylab Dynamic Orbital Models.

Structural dynamics verification facility study

The need for a structural dynamics verification facility to support structures programs was studied. Most of the industry operated facilities are used for highly focused research, component development, and problem solving, and are not used for the generic understanding of the coupled dynamic response of major engine subsystems. Capabilities for the proposed facility include: the ability to both excite and measure coupled structural dynamic response of elastic blades on elastic shafting, the mechanical simulation of various dynamical loadings representative of those seen in operating engines, and the measurement of engine dynamic deflections and interface forces caused by alternative engine mounting configurations and compliances.

Turbine blade structural dynamic analysis

The paper presents structural dynamic analysis and test results for the Space Shuttle Main Engine turbine blades. Athough these blades are designed to avoid coincidence of natural frequencies with harmonic excitation forces, the complexity of the turbine hardware, its nonlinearities and lack of information regarding the forcing function have led to fatigue failures. A comparison of single-blade analysis and test modal frequencies, shapes, and stresses is given; analysis techniques to describe the forcing function, compute dynamic responses, and incorporate the nonlinearities of Coulomb-friction dampers are presented. Recommendations are made for new research to improve forcing function computations and structural damping estimates used in the analysis.

Structural Dynamic Analysis in Rocket Propulsion and Launch Vehicles

Structural dynamics is one of the critical disciplines for the successful design, development, and testing of space launch vehicles. It is applied from the smallest component (turbine blades), all the way to the entire vehicle, and has to be calculated for every phase of a mission, from ascent and orbit to landing. Successful application of structural dynamics requires extensive knowledge of Fourier techniques, linear algebra, random variables, finite element modeling, and essentials of SDOF and MDOF vibration theory. Working knowledge of fluid dynamics, statistics, and data analysis also extremely useful.

Research in Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials, 1990

The Structural Dynamics and Materials (SDM) Conference was held on April 2 to 4, 1990 in Long Beach, California. This publication is a compilation of presentations of the work-in-progress sessions and does not contain papers from the regular sessions since those papers are published by AIAA in the conference proceedings.
