U-Th-Pb and Rb-Sr systematics of Apollo 17 boulder 7 from the North Massif of the Taurus-Littrow valley

Portions of highland breccia boulder 7 collected during the Apollo 17 mission were studied using U-Th-Pb and Rb-Sr systematics. A Rb-Sr internal isochron age of 3.89 plus or minus 0.08 b.y. with an initial Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.69926 plus or minus 0.00008 was obtained for clast 1 (77135,57) (a troctolitic microbreccia). A troctolitic portion of microbreccia clast 77215,37 yielded a U-Pb internal isochron of 3.8 plus or minus 0.2 b.y. and an initial Pb-206/Pb-207 of 0.69. These internal isochron ages are interpreted as reflecting metamorphic events, probably related to impacts, which reset Rb-Sr and U-Pb mineral systems of older rocks.

Rb-Sr age of troctolite 76535

Rb-Sr systematics is studied for the lunar troctolite 76535 in phases covering a wide range of Rb and Sr concentrations. A line is obtained corresponding to an age of 4.61 plus or minus 0.07 AE and an initial Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.69900 plus or minus 0.00003. The Rb-Sr age of 4.55 plus or minus 0.10 AE for the dunite (72417) and that of the troctolite are in approximate agreement and permit an interpretation that these rocks formed during a single major lunar differentiation which presumbly produced an anorthositic-gabbroic lunar crust and layered upper mantle.

Lunar Rb-Sr chronology

It has been established with the aid of Rb-Sr studies that lunar chronology consists of five episodes, including the formation of the moon approximately 4.6 AE ago (1 AE = 1000 million years), a period of intense bombardment by planetary debris resulting in the formation of the major lunar basins, the end of this period at 3.9-4.0 AE ago, a period of mare flooding extending from 3.9 to 3.2 AE ago, and a relatively quiescent period from 3.2 AE ago to the present. In addition, Rb-Sr-studies have provided valuable constraints on the geochemical evolution of the moon through the determination of the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios which limit the Rb/Sr ratios of the source materials for lunar rocks. Attention is given to the characteristics of the Rb-Sr method, the analytical techniques, the ages of lunar mare basalts, the non-mare rocks, the studies conducted in connection with the various Apollo missions, the lunar cataclysm, lunar soils, and aspects of crustal contamination.

Sr-isotopic constraints on the petrogenesis of Apollo 12 mare basalts

As part of a study of Apollo 12 basalts, crystallization ages and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 (I) were determined for pigeonite basalts 12039 and 12055 and ilmenite basalt 12051. Sr-86/Sr-87 measurements for a larger suite of whole rock and plagioclase samples were obtained, and it is found that I-values for olivine and pigeonite basalts are indistinguishable while I-values for ilmenite basalts are distinctly lower. A self-consistent model for the evolution of the Sr-isotopic composition and REE abundances suggests that basalt was formed by small (2-10%) degrees of melting of cumulate sources composed of varying proportions of olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene. This model requires nonchondritic relative abundances of the REE in the parental liquid at the time of formation of the cumulate sources. The model also describes Sr-isotopic composition and REE abundances of Apollo 17 high-Ti basalts and Apollo 15 low-Ti basalts. A lunar 'scenario' involving open system crystallization of a magma ocean from the crust downward is proposed.

Noise of the 10-bladed 60 deg swept SR-5 propeller in a wind tunnel

Noise generated by supersonic helical tip speed propellers is a possible cabin environment problem for future airplanes powered by these propellers. Noise characteristics of one of these propellers, designated SR-5, are presented. A matrix of tests was conducted to provide as much acoustic information as possible. During aerodynamic testing it was discovered that the propeller had an aeroelastic instability which prevented testing the propeller at its design advance ratio of 4.08 at axial Mach numbers over 0.7. Plots of the variation of the maximum blade passage tone with helical tip Mach number indicate that, at higher helical tip Mach numbers, the propeller operated on sharply increasing portion of the noise curve; therefore, extrapolations to the design condition would not be accurate. A possible extrapolation indicated that SR-5 at its design point should be quieter than SR-3 at its design point. Directivity plots at the higher helical tip Mach numbers indicate a lobed directivity pattern as was observed previously on the SR-3 propeller.

Speculations on nature and extent of Archean basement in Labrador as indicated by SR, ND and PB isotopic systematics of proterozoic intrusives

The Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic compositions of mid to late Proterozoic (approximately 1.6 to 1.1 Ga) massif-type anorthosites and mafic intrusives in the eastern Canadian shield are correlated with geographic location. Complexes in the Grenville province have positive epsilon sub Nd values and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 (I sub Sr) generally less than 0.703, suggesting derivation from depleted mantle. In Labrador, similar complexes close to or northwest of a line roughly corresponding to the Grenville Front have negative epsilon sub Nd values and I sub Sr 0.703. This contrast was intrepreted as reflecting either enriched mantle under the Nain Province, or contamination of the Nain intrusives with older crustal components. Lead isotopic compositions, however, favor the latter. The possibility of using these Proterozoic intrusives as tracers to characterize the nature and extent of older basement types in Labrador is discussed.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systematics of cherts and other siliceous deposits

An analysis of marine and lacustrine cherts demonstrates that Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systems may be used in elucidating the origin and evolution of cherts, and that the Rb-Sr system may be used for dating. All samples have high Rb/Sr ratios, and though the site of these elements in cherts was not established, they appear to be correlated with Al content. Sm/Nd ratios were typical of continental sources, and the results show the Rb-Sr system in cherts to be isolated from the associated carbonate, with little Sr exchange. Data suggest that in many cases cherts are formed by dissolved SiO2 nucleating on clay-like material which preserves the isotropic characteristics of the detrital source, while in some cases it is possible that cherts were formed from silica-saturated waters from a nonmarine source.

Cruise noise of the SR-2 propeller model in a wind tunnel

Noise data on the SR-2 model propeller were taken in the NASA Lewis Research Center 8- by 6-Foot Wind Tunnel. The maximum blade passing tone rises with increasing helical tip Mach number to a peak level at a helical tip Mach number of about 1.05; then it remains the same or decreases at higher helical tip Mach numbers. This behavior, which has been observed with other propeller models, points to the possibility of using higher propeller tip speeds to limit airplane cabin noise while maintaining high flight speed and efficiency. Noise comparisons of the straight-blade SR-2 propeller and the swept-blade SR-7A propeller showed that the tailored sweep of the SR-7A appears to be the cause of both lower peak noise levels and a slower noise increase with increasing helical tip Mach number.

Modeling of lunar basalt petrogenesis - Sr isotope evidence from Apollo 14 high-alumina basalts

This paper reexamines the Sr isotope data available for the Apollo 14 high-alumina basalts in light of the assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) process model proposed by Neal et al. (1987, 1988, 1989). Positive linear correlations of Sr-87/Sr-86 with Rb-87/Rb-86 and the Sr abundance (both leading to KREEP) are used as evidence of such an AFC process in the petrogenesis of Apollo 14 high-alumina basalts. The existing Sr isotope data for Apollo 14 high-alumina basalts suggest that there were three AFC cycles.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd chronology of an Apollo 17 KREEP basalt

The paper determines Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr mineral isochrons for an Apollo 17 KREEP (pigeonite) basalt clast from breccia 72275 collected from Boulder 1, Station 2 in the Valley of Taurus-Littrow. Sm-Nd analyses of the basalt yield a precise mineral isochron age of 4.08 +/-0.07 Ga for lambda(Sm-147) = 0.00654/Ga. The concordancy of Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr ages for the basalt suggests that it crystallized about 4.08 Ga ago. Distinct ages and initial Sr isotopic ratios for Apollo 17 KREEP basalts and Apollo 14 and 15 KREEP suggest that these two types of KREEP basalts were not derived from the same source. Apollo 17 KREEP basalts are contemporaneous with some Apollo 14 aluminous mare basalts. The ages and Sr and Nd isotopic data suggest that these two different types of basalts were produced from sources having similar Rb/Sr ratios but different Sm/Nd ratios.

Sudbury project (University of Muenster-Ontario Geological Survey): Sr-Nd in heterolithic breccias and gabbroic dikes

One major objective of our Sudbury project was to define origin and age of the huge breccia units below and above the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC). The heterolithic Footwall Breccia (FB) represents a part of the uplifted crater floor. It contains subrounded fragments up to several meters in size and lithic fragments with shock features (greater than 10 GPa) embedded into a fine- to medium-grained matrix. Epsilon(sub Nd)-epsilon(sub Sr) relationships point to almost exclusively parautochthonous precursor lithologies. The different textures of the matrix reflect the metamorphic history of the breccia layer; thermal annealing by the overlying hot impact melt sheet (SIC) at temperatures greater than 1000 C resulted in melting of the fine crushed material, followed by an episode of metasomatic K-feldspar growth and, finally, formation of low-grade minerals such as actinolite and chlorite. Isotope relationships in the Onaping breccias (Gray and Green Member) are much more complex. All attempts to date the breccia formation failed: Zircons are entirely derived from country rocks and lack the pronounced Pb loss caused by the heat of the slowly cooling impact melt sheet (SIC). Rb-Sr techniques using either lithic fragments of different shock stages or the thin slab method, set time limits for the apparently pervasive alkali mobility in these suevitic breccias. The data array and the intercept in the plots point to a major Rb-Sr fractionation around 1.54 Ga ago. This model age is in the same range as the age obtained for the metasomatic matrix of the FB. Rb-Sr dating of a shock event in impact-related breccias seems to be possible only if their matrix had suffered total melting by the hot melt sheet (FB) or if they contain a high fraction of impact melt (suevitic Onaping breccias), whereas the degree of shock metamorphism in rock or lithic fragments plays a minor role. In the Sudbury case, however, the impact melt in the seuvitic breccias is devitrified and recrystallized, which changed Rb/Sr ratios quite drastically. Therefore, the Onaping breccias give only age limits for alteration and low-grade metamorphism. The Sm-Nd system was not reset during the Sudbury event; clasts as well as the matrix in the FB and in the Onaping breccias show preimpact 'Archean' Nd isotope signatures.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic variations in dissected crustal xenoliths

The effect of magma-xenolith interaction on the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics was investigated by studying the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd variations in dissected crustal xenoliths sampled from different localities across Scotland. The Nd isotopic compositions were found to be virtually uniform across each xenolith, but significant variations were found in Rb, Sr, and REE concentrations, as well as in Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd ratios and Sr isotopic composition. Most of these variations appear to be inherited from the protolith, but, in one case, they have been modified by melt infiltration from the host magma. The results lend confidence to the interpretation of the isotopic and chemical compositions of xenoliths transported in basaltic magmas as reflecting their source regions, but they also highlight the potential problems of interpreting Sm-Nd model ages from metamorphic rocks.

Measurements of the Basic SR-71 Airplane Near-Field Signature

Airplane design studies have developed configuration concepts that may produce lower sonic boom annoyance levels. Since lower noise designs differ significantly from other HSCT designs, it is necessary to accurately assess their potential before HSCT final configuration decisions are made. Flight tests to demonstrate lower noise design capability by modifying an existing airframe have been proposed for the Mach 3 SR-71 reconnaissance airplane. To support the modified SR-71 proposal, baseline in-flight measurements were made of the unmodified aircraft. These measurements of SR-71 near-field sonic boom signatures were obtained by an F-16XL probe airplane at flightpath separation distances ranging from approximately 740 to 40 ft. This paper discusses the methods used to gather and analyze the flight data, and makes comparisons of these flight data with CFD results from Douglas Aircraft Corporation and NASA Langley Research Center. The CFD solutions were obtained for the near-field flow about the SR-71, and then propagated to the flight test measurement location using the program MDBOOM.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd Study of the D'Orbigny Angrite

D'Orbigny, is a relatively a new angrite find. Angrites are achondrites that show unique mineralogy and typically ancient crystallization ages. D Orbigny has been described extensively by. We have initiated a study of D Orbigny. A Pb-Pb model age of 4559 Ga has been reported. The presence of Pu-244 fission Xe in D Orbigny has also been reported. We present Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr results and a Mn-53-Cr-53 study is in progress. We had expected to find a relatively well-behaved Sm-Nd system, and distinct evidence for the Sm-146-Nd-142 system. Emphasis in this study was placed on the precise measurement of initial Sr-87/Sr-86, since primitive initial Sr-87/Sr-86 may be characteristic of the angrite parent body. Sr isotope measurements were obtained in the recently completed laboratories at JPL, using the ThermoFinnigan Triton mass spectrometer. Due to lower amounts of Nd and Sm, Sm-Nd data were obtained on the Lunatic I spectrometer at Caltech, due to established high ionization techniques, on this instrument using light rare earth oxide ions.

Apollo 14 and 15 samples - Rb-Sr ages, trace elements, and lunar evolution.

Studies concerning Rb-Sr isotopic relations are discussed together with abundance measurements regarding K, Rb, Sr, and Ba in Apollo 14 and 15 rocks and soils. The studies include age determination by the internal isochron technique on one basaltic rock sample from each of the two missions. In addition, total sample measurements have been made on samples of fines material from both missions. Trace element abundances and Rb-Sr systematics in the various grain size fractions of three of the fines have also been analyzed.

Early history of the moon: Implications of U-Th-Pb and Rb-Sr systematics

Anorthosite 60015 contains the lowest initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio (0.69884 + or - 0.00004) yet reported for a lunar sample. The initial ratio is equal to that of the achondrite Angra dos Reis and slightly higher than the lowest measured Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio for an inclusion in the C3 carbonaceous chondrite Allende. The Pb-Pb ages of both Angra dos Reis and Allende are 4.62 x 10 to the 9th power years (4.62 billion years). Thus, the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio found in lunar anorthosite 60015 strongly supports the hypothesis that the age of the moon is about 4.65 b.y. The U-238/Pb-204 value estimated for the source of the excess lead in orange soil 74220 is lower than the values estimated for the sources of KREEP (600-1000), high K (300-600) and low K (100-300) basalts.

Rb, Sr and strontium isotopic composition, K/Ar age and large ion lithophile trace element abundances in rocks and glasses from the Wanapitei Lake impact structure

Shock metamorphosed rocks and shock-produced melt glasses from the Wanapitei Lake impact structure have been examined petrographically and by electron microprobe. Eleven clasts exhibiting varying degrees of shock metamorphism and eight impact-produced glasses have been analyzed for Rb, Sr and Sr isotopic composition. Five clasts and one glass have also been analyzed for large ion lithophile (LIL) trace element abundances including Li, Rb, Sr, and Ba and the REE's. The impact event forming the Wanapitei Lake structure occurred 37 m.y. ago based on K/Ar dating of glass and glassy whole-rock samples. Rb/Sr isotopic dating failed to provide a meaningful whole-rock or internal isochron. The isotopic composition of the glasses can be explained by impact-produced mixing and melting of metasediments.
