Ultrafast Spin Crossover in a Room-Temperature Ferrimagnet: Element-Specific Spin Dynamics in Photoexcited Cobalt Ferrite

Transition metal complexes capable of photoinduced spin crossover have been greatly investigated because of their potential to enable ultrafast optical control of information processing. Yet, any real application of photoswitchable molecules requires that spin crossover be paired with additional functionality such as long-range magnetic order. Important advances combining these functions are notably reported for a number of bimetallic Prussian Blue analogues; however, to date, PBA-based magnetic photoswitches can only operate below 150 K due to loss of magnetic order. In contrast, cobalt ferrite is a ferrimagnetic semiconductor with a Curie temperature of 790 K and extremely favorable magnetic properties by comparison to state-of-the-art PBAs. The mixed valence electronic structure of cobalt ferrite is reminiscent of cobalt–iron PBA, which is a well-known photoswitch. To investigate the potential for photoswitching in this material, we employ transient XUV spectroscopy to probe charge and spin dynamics with element-specific resolution on the femtosecond time scale. Results show that 400 nm light excites a metal-to-metal charge transfer transition, which drives the crossover of high-spin Co 2+ to low-spin Co 3+ with a time constant of 405 ± 29 fs and an internal quantum efficiency of unity. This result establishes the existence of efficient photoswitching in a new class of robust ferrimagnetic spinel ferrites.

Low-energy spin dynamics in rare-earth perovskite oxides

We review recent studies of spin dynamics in rare-earth orthorhombic perovskite oxides of the type RMO 3 , where R is a rare-earth ion and M is a transition-metal ion, using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering (INS). After a short introduction to the magnetic INS technique in general, the results of INS experiments on both transition-metal and rare-earth subsystems for four selected compounds (YbFeO 3 , TmFeO 3 , YFeO 3 , YbAlO 3 ) are presented. We show that the spectrum of magnetic excitations consists of two types of collective modes that are well separated in energy: gapped magnons with a typical bandwidth of <70 meV, associated with the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered transition-metal subsystem, and AFM fluctuations of <5 meV within the rare-earth subsystem, with no hybridization of those modes. We discuss the high-energy conventional magnon excitations of the 3d subsystem only briefly, and focus in more detail on the spectacular dynamics of the rare-earth sublattice in these materials. We observe that the nature of the ground state and the low-energy excitation strongly depends on the identity of the rare-earth ion. In the case of non-Kramers ions, the low-symmetry crystal field completely eliminates the degeneracy of the multiplet state, creating a rich magnetic field-temperature phase diagram. In the case of Kramers ions, the resulting ground state is at least a doublet, which can be viewed as an effective quantum spin-1/2. Equally important is the fact that in Yb-based materials the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction dominates in one direction, despite the three-dimensional nature of the orthoperovskite crystal structure. The observation of a fractional spinon continuum and quantum criticality in YbAlO3 demonstrates that Kramers rare-earth based magnets can provide realizations of various aspects of quantum low-dimensional physics.

Combined molecular and spin dynamics simulation of BCC iron with vacancy defects

Utilizing an atomistic computational model, which handles both translational and spin degrees of freedom, combined molecular and spin dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate the effect of vacancy defects on spin wave excitations in ferromagnetic iron. Fourier transforms of space- and time-displaced correlation functions yield the dynamic structure factor, providing characteristic frequencies and lifetimes of the spin wave modes. A comparison of the system with a 5% vacancy concentration with pure lattice data shows a decrease in frequency and a decrease in lifetime for all transverse spin wave excitations observed. In addition, the clearly defined transverse spin wave excitations are distorted with the introduction of vacancy defects, and we observe reduced excitation lifetimes due to increased magnon–magnon scattering. We observe further evidence of increased magnon–magnon scattering, as the peaks in the longitudinal spin wave spectrum become less distinct. Finally, similar impacts are observed in the vibrational subsystem, with a decrease in characteristic phonon frequency and flattening of lattice excitation signals due to vacancy defects.

Machine learning nonequilibrium electron forces for spin dynamics of itinerant magnets

Abstract We present a generalized potential theory for conservative as well as nonconservative forces for the Landau-Lifshitz magnetization dynamics. Importantly, this formulation makes possible an elegant generalization of the Behler-Parrinello machine learning (ML) approach, which is a cornerstone of ML-based quantum molecular dynamics methods, to the modeling of force fields in adiabatic spin dynamics of out-of-equilibrium itinerant magnetic systems. We demonstrate our approach by developing a deep-learning neural network that successfully learns the electron-mediated exchange fields in a driven s-d model computed from the nonequilibrium Green’s function method. We show that dynamical simulations with forces predicted from the neural network accurately reproduce the voltage-driven domain-wall propagation. Our work also lays the foundation for ML modeling of spin transfer torques and opens a avenue for ML-based multi-scale modeling of nonequilibrium dynamical phenomena in itinerant magnets and spintronics.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Zn-doped copper pyrovanadate

We report magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn x Cu 2-x V 2 O 7 (ZnCVO) with x ≈ 0.06 have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that our ZnCVO samples are isostructural with β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 (β-CVO) with a small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic property measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu 2+ spins were found to align along the crystallographic c axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction J 1 . Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the bc plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composed of J 1 , J 5 , and J 6 interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

Probing iron in Earth’s core with molecular-spin dynamics

Dynamic compression of iron to Earth-core conditions is one of the few ways to gather important elastic and transport properties needed to uncover key mechanisms surrounding the geodynamo effect. Herein, a machine-learned ab initio derived molecular-spin dynamics (MSD) methodology with explicit treatment for longitudinal spin-fluctuations is utilized to probe the dynamic phase-diagram of iron. This framework uniquely enables an accurate resolution of the phase-transition kinetics and Earth-core elastic properties, as highlighted by compressional wave velocity and adiabatic bulk moduli measurements. In addition, a unique coupling of MSD with time-dependent density functional theory enables gauging electronic transport properties, critically important for resolving geodynamo dynamics.

Universal spin dynamics in infinite-temperature one-dimensional quantum magnets

Here, we address the nature of spin dynamics in various integrable and non-integrable, isotropic and anisotropic quantum spin-$S$ chains, beyond the paradigmatic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model. In particular, we investigate the algebraic long-time decay $\propto t^{-1/z}$ of the spin-spin correlation function at infinite temperature, using state-of-the-art simulations based on tensor network methods. We identify three universal regimes for the spin transport, independent of the exact microscopic model: (i) superdiffusive with $z=3/2$, as in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, when the model is integrable with extra symmetries such as spin isotropy that drive the Drude weight to zero, (ii) ballistic with $z=1$ when the model is integrable with a finite Drude weight, and (iii) diffusive with $z=2$ with easy-axis anisotropy or without integrability, at variance with previous observations.

Emergent Spin Dynamics Enabled by Lattice Interactions in a Bicomponent Artificial Spin Ice

Artificial spin ice (ASI) are arrays of nanoscaled magnets that can serve both as models for frustration in atomic spin ice as well as for exploring new spin-wave-based strategies to transmit, process, and store information. Here, we exploit the intricate interplay of the magnetization dynamics of two dissimilar ferromagnetic metals arranged on complimentary lattice sites in a square ASI to modulate the spin-wave properties effectively. We show that the interaction between the two sublattices results in unique spectra attributed to each sublattice, and we observe inter- and intra-lattice dynamics facilitated by the distinct magnetization properties of the two materials. The dynamic properties are systematically studied by angular-dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance and confirmed by micromagnetic simulations. Here, we show that combining materials with dissimilar magnetic properties enables the realization of a wide range of two-dimensional structures, potentially opening the door to new concepts in nanomagnonics.

Spin dynamics in permalloy nano-ellipses for honeycomb and square lattices

We report experimental and theoretical studies of spin dynamics in lattice structures of permalloy (Ni 80 Fe 20 ) nano-ellipses, with four different types of networks including honeycomb and square lattices. The lattices are patterned at the center line of the co-planar wave guide and consist of non-contacting or contacting ellipses. Micromagnetic simulations show excellent agreement with the broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experimental results. We find the existence of a spin-wave mode localized in the vertex region of the contacting nano-ellipse network. Our finding has important implications when designing an artificial spin ice (ASI) network for functional magnonics.

Spectroscopic signatures of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the charge and spin dynamics of doped one-dimensional antiferromagnets

In this work, we study the impact of next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) hopping on the low-energy collective excitations of strongly correlated doped antiferromagnetic cuprate spin chains. Specifically, we use exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method to study the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical spin and charge structure factors, and the Cu L-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity of the doped t-t'-J model for a set of t' values. We find evidence for the breakdown of spin-charge separation as |t'| increases and identify its fingerprints in the dynamical response functions. The inclusion of nnn hopping couples the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in the formation of a spin-polaron, where a ferromagnetic spin polarization cloud dresses the doped carrier. The spin-polaron manifests itself as additional spectral weight in the dynamical correlation functions, which appear simultaneously in the spin- and charge-sensitive channels. We also demonstrate that RIXS can provide a unique view of the spin-polaron, due to its sensitivity to both the spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Geometric integration of classical spin dynamics via a mean-field Schrödinger equation

The Landau-Lifshitz equation describes the time evolution of magnetic dipoles and can be derived by taking the classical limit of a quantum mechanical spin Hamiltonian. To take this limit, one constrains the many-body quantum state to a tensor product of coherent states, thereby neglecting entanglement between sites. Expectation values of the quantum spin operators produce the usual classical spin dipoles. One may also consider expectation values of polynomials of the spin operators, leading to quadrupole and higher-order spin moments, which satisfy a dynamical equation of motion that generalizes the Landau-Lifshitz dynamics [Zhang and Batista, Phys. Rev. B 104, 104409 (2021)]. Here we reformulate the dynamics of these N 2 –1 generalized spin components as a mean-field Schrödinger equation on the N-dimensional coherent state. Furthermore, this viewpoint suggests efficient integration methods that respect the local symplectic structure of the classical spin dynamics.

Charge Transfer and Spin Dynamics in a Zinc Porphyrin Donor Covalently Linked to One or Two Naphthalenediimide Acceptors

We report quantum coherence effects on charge transfer and spin dynamics in a system having two degenerate electron acceptors are studied using a zinc 5,10,15-tri(n-pentyI)-20-phenylporphyrin (ZnP) electron donor covalently linked to either one or two naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) electron acceptors using an anthracene (An) spacer, ZnP-An-NDI (1) and ZnP-An-NDI 2 (2), respectively. Following photoexcitation of 1 and 2 in toluene at 295 K, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy shows that the electron transfer (ET) rate constant for 2 is about three times larger than that of 1, which can be accounted for by the statistical nature of incoherent ET as well as the electron couplings for the charge separation reactions. In contrast, the rate constant for charge recombination (CR) of 1 is about 25% faster than that of 2. Using femtosecond transient infrared spectroscopy and theoretical analysis, we find that the electron on NDI 2 ∙- in 2 localizes onto one of the two NDIs prior to CR, thus precluding electronically coherent CR from NDI 2 ∙- . Conversely, CR in both 1 and 2 is spin coherent as indicated by the observation of a resonance in the 3* ZnP yield following CR as a function of applied magnetic field, giving spin-spin exchange interaction energies of 2J = 210 and 236 mT, respectively, where the line width of the resonance for 2 is greater than 1. These data show that while CR is a spin-coherent process, incoherent hopping of the electron between the two NDIs in 2, consistent with the lack of delocalization noted above, results in greater spin decoherence in 2 relative to 1.

Observation of coherently coupled cation spin dynamics in an insulating ferrimagnetic oxide

Many technologically useful magnetic oxides are ferrimagnetic insulators, which consist of chemically distinct cations. In this work, we examine the spin dynamics of different magnetic cations in ferrimagnetic NiZnAl-ferrite (Ni 0.65 Zn 0.35 Al 0.8 Fe 1.2 O 4 ) under continuous microwave excitation. Specifically, we employ time-resolved x-ray ferromagnetic resonance to separately probe Fe 2+/3+ and Ni 2+ cations on different sublattice sites. Our results show that the precessing cation moments retain a rigid, collinear configuration to within ≈2°. Moreover, the effective spin relaxation is identical to within <10% for all magnetic cations in the ferrite. Thus, we validate the oft-assumed “ferromagnetic-like” dynamics in the resonantly driven ferrimagnetic oxide: the magnetic moments from different cations precess as a coherent, collective magnetization, despite the high contents of nonmagnetic Zn 2+ and Al 3+ diluting the exchange interactions.

Particle-hole asymmetry in the dynamical spin and charge responses of corner-shared 1D cuprates

Although many experiments imply that oxygen orbitals play an essential role in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates, their precise role in collective spin and charge excitations and superconductivity is not yet fully understood. Here, we study the doping-dependent dynamical spin and charge structure factors of single and multi-orbital (pd) models for doped one-dimensional corner-shared spin-chain cuprates using several numerically exact methods. In doing so, we determine the orbital composition of the collective spin and charge excitations of cuprates, with important implications for our understanding of these materials. For example, we observe a particle-hole asymmetry in the orbital-resolved charge excitations, which is directly relevant to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and not captured by the single-band Hubbard model. Our results imply that one must explicitly include the oxygen degrees of freedom in order to fully understand some experimental observations on cuprate materials.

Spin dynamics in linear magnetoelectric material Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystal samples of a linear magnetoelectric material Mn 3 Ta 2 O 8 , which exhibits a collinear antiferromagnetic order, to reveal the spin dynamics. Numerous modes observed in the neutron spectra were reasonably reproduced by linear spin-wave theory on the basis of the spin Hamiltonian including eight Heisenberg interactions and an easy-plane type single-ion anisotropy. In conclusion, the presence of strong frustration was found in the identified spin Hamiltonian.

Quantum Sensing and Imaging of Spin–Orbit-Torque-Driven Spin Dynamics in the Non-Collinear Antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn

Novel non-collinear antiferromagnets with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking, non-trivial band topology, and unconventional transport properties have received immense research interest over the past decade due to their rich physics and enormous promise in technological applications. One of the central focuses in this emerging field is exploring the relationship between the microscopic magnetic structure and exotic material properties. Nanoscale imaging of both spin–orbit-torque-induced deterministic magnetic switching and chiral spin rotation in non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn films using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are reported. Direct evidence of the off-resonance dipole–dipole coupling between the spin dynamics in Mn 3 Sn and proximate NV centers is also demonstrated by NV relaxometry measurements. These results demonstrate the unique capabilities of NV centers in accessing the local information of the magnetic order and dynamics in these emergent quantum materials and suggest new opportunities for investigating the interplay between topology and magnetism in a broad range of topological magnets.
