Phonon dynamics in the site-disordered Kitaev spin liquid

The Kitaev honeycomb model provides a paradigmatic example of an exactly solvable quantum spin liquid (QSL), where spins fractionalize into itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to a static background of ℤ 2 gauge fluxes. This model has attracted significant interest due to its potential experimental realization in spin-orbit Mott insulators like 𝛼−RuCl 3 . Among various experimental techniques, ultrasound measurements of sound attenuation have emerged as a promising approach to detect spin fractionalization in these materials. However, deviations from the ideal Kitaev model, often due to disorder, introduce localized modes that dominate the low-energy physics. To investigate these effects, we calculate the sound attenuation coefficient in the site-disordered Kitaev honeycomb model under an applied magnetic field that breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our analysis reveals that quasilocalized modes from quasivacancies impact the phonon self-energy, yet the sound attenuation coefficient maintains its sixfold symmetry and linear temperature dependence at low temperatures, even with disorder. This robustness underscores sound attenuation's reliability as a probe for spin fractionalization. As a result, we show that this linear behavior persists under an external field and in the random-flux sector, highlighting the persistent influence of fractionalized excitations, despite disorder.

Oscillations of the thermal conductivity in the spin-liquid state of α-RuCl 3

In the class of materials called spin liquids a magnetically ordered state cannot be attained even at millikelvin temperatures because of conflicting constraints on each spin; for example, from geometric or exchange frustration. The resulting quantum spin-liquid state is currently of intense interest because it exhibits unusual excitations as well as wave-function entanglement. The layered insulator α-RuCl 3 orders as a zigzag antiferromagnet at low temperature in zero magnetic field. The zigzag order is destroyed when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the zigzag axis. At moderate magnetic field strength, there is growing evidence that a quantum spin-liquid state exists. Here we report the observation of oscillations in its thermal conductivity in that field range. The oscillations, whose amplitude is very large within this field range and strongly suppressed on either side, are periodic. This is analogous to quantum oscillations in metals, even though α-RuCl 3 is an excellent insulator with a large gap. As the temperature is raised above 0.5 K, the oscillation amplitude decreases exponentially, anticorrelating with the emergence of an anomalous planar thermal Hall conductivity above approximately 2 K.

Quantum spin liquid with emergent chiral order in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2) spin ⓍU(1) charge symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference W=6. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction 9≲U/t≲10.75, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length L increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

Analytic calculation of the vison gap in the Kitaev spin liquid

Although the ground-state energy of the Kitaev spin liquid can be calculated exactly, the associated vison gap energy has to date only been calculated numerically from finite size diagonalization. Here we show that the phase shift for scattering Majorana fermions off a single bond-flip can be calculated analytically, leading to a closed-form expression for the vison gap energy Δ = 0.2633 J . Generalizations of our approach can be applied to Kitaev spin liquids on more complex lattices such as the three dimensional hyper-octagonal lattice.

Eminuscent phase in frustrated magnets: a challenge to quantum spin liquids

A geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet consists of localised magnetic moments, spins, whose orientation cannot be arranged to simultaneously minimise their interaction energies. Such materials may host novel fascinating phases of matter, such as fluid-like states called quantum spin-liquids. GF magnets have, like all solid-state systems, randomly located impurities whose magnetic moments may “freeze” at low temperatures, making the system enter a spin-glass state. We analyse the available data for spin-glass transitions in GF materials and find a surprising trend: the glass-transition temperature grows with decreasing impurity concentration and reaches a finite value in the impurity-free limit at a previously unidentified, “hidden”, energy scale. We propose a scenario in which the interplay of interactions and entropy leads to a crossover in the permeability of the medium that assists glass freezing at low temperatures. This low-temperature, “eminuscent”, phase may obscure or even destroy the widely-sought spin-liquid states in rather clean systems.

Codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Cl 9

A codimension-two spiral spin liquid is a correlated paramagnetic state with one-dimensional ground state degeneracy hosted within a three-dimensional lattice. Here, in this work, via neutron scattering experiments and numerical simulations, we establish the existence of a codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2⁢ Cl 9 , which demonstrates an alternate path to spiral spin liquids by overcoming the long-standing impediment of weak further-neighbor interactions. In the long-range ordered regime, competing spiral and spin density wave orders emerge as a function of applied magnetic field, among which a possible order-by-disorder transition is identified.

Ultra spin liquid in Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14

Abstract We analyze recent measurements of C / T , specific heat C divided by temperature T , of a recently observed ultra spin liquid. The measurements are carried out in magnetic fields on the triangular lattice compound . We show that the obtained heat capacity formed by the ultra spin liquid as a function of temperature T vs. magnetic field B behaves very similar to the electronic specific heat of the HF metal and the quantum magnet . We demonstrate that the effective mass of spinon exhibits the universal scaling coinciding with scaling observed in heavy-fermion (HF) metals and in . Based on these observations we conclude that a strongly correlated spin liquid determines the thermodynamic properties of the ultra spin liquid of .

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

Experimental realization of classical Z 2 spin liquids in a programmable quantum device

We build and probe a Z 2 spin liquid in a programmable quantum device, the D-Wave DW-2000Q. Specifically, we observe the classical eight-vertex and six-vertex (spin ice) states and transitions between them. To realize this state of matter, we design a Hamiltonian with combinatorial gauge symmetry using only pairwise-qubit interactions and a transverse field, i.e., interactions which are accessible in this quantum device. The combinatorial gauge symmetry remains exact along the full quantum annealing path, landing the system onto the classical eight-vertex model at the endpoint of the path. The output configurations from the device allow us to directly observe the loop structure of the classical model. Moreover, we deform the Hamiltonian so as to vary the weights of the eight vertices and show that we can selectively attain the classical six-vertex (ice) model, or drive the system into a ferromagnetic state. Additionally, we present studies of the classical phase diagram of the system as a function of the eight-vertex deformations and effective temperature, which we control by varying the relative strengths of the programmable couplings, and we show that the experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis. Finally, we identify additional capabilities that, if added to these devices, would allow us to realize Z 2 quantum spin liquids on which to build topological qubits.

Quantum spin liquids bootstrapped from Ising criticality in Rydberg arrays

Arrays of Rydberg atoms constitute a highly tunable, strongly interacting venue for the pursuit of exotic states of matter. We develop a strategy for accessing a family of fractionalized phases known as quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional Rydberg arrays. We specifically use effective field theory methods to study arrays assembled from Rydberg chains tuned to an Ising phase transition that famously hosts emergent fermions propagating within each chain. This highly entangled starting point allows us to naturally access spin liquids familiar from Kitaev's honeycomb model—albeit from an entirely different framework. In particular, we argue that finite-range repulsive Rydberg interactions, which frustrate nearby symmetry-breaking orders, can enable coherent propagation of emergent fermions between the chains in which they were born. Delocalization of emergent fermions across the full two-dimensional Rydberg array yields a gapless Z 2 spin liquid with a single massless Dirac cone. Here, the Rydberg occupation numbers exhibit universal power-law correlations that provide a straightforward experimental diagnostic of this phase. We further show that explicitly breaking symmetries perturbs the gapless spin liquid into gapped, topologically ordered descendants: Breaking lattice symmetries generates toric-code topological order, whereas introducing Floquet-mediated chirality generates non-Abelian Ising topological order. In the toric-code phase, we analytically construct microscopic incarnations of non-Abelian defects, which can be created and transported by dynamically controlling the atom positions in the array. Our work suggests that appropriately tuned Rydberg arrays provide a cold-atoms counterpart of solid-state “Kitaev materials” and, more generally, it spotlights a different angle for pursuing experimental platforms for Abelian and non-Abelian fractionalization.

Photoinduced frustration modulation in 𝜅-type quantum spin liquid candidates

Geometric frustration is a key parameter controlling electronic and magnetic properties of quantum spin liquid systems, yet remains challenging to tune. Here, we coherently drive molecular vibrations with midinfrared pulses in two organic quantum spin liquid candidates, the insulating 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 2⁢ Cu 2 ⁢(CN) 3 and the metallic 𝜅−(BEDT−TTF) 4 ⁢Hg 2.89 ⁢Br 8 , and probe their electronic response through ultrafast reflectivity measurements. We observe a nonlinear coupling between local molecular vibrations and nonlocal phonons, which is expected to directly modulate the geometric frustration of their triangular lattice. Furthermore, our findings establish a promising route to dynamically control frustration in nonbipartite quantum materials.

Gapless spin liquid and pair density wave of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders

We study the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations. At half-filling, we identify an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase, which has one gapless spin mode and algebraic spin–spin correlations but exponential decay scalar chiral–chiral correlations, between a metallic phase at weak coupling and Mott insulating dimer phase at strong interaction. Upon light doping the gapless spin liquid, the system exhibits power-law charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations but short-range single-particle, spin–spin, and chiral–chiral correlations. Similar to CDW correlations, the superconducting correlations also decay in power-law but oscillate in sign as a function of distance, which is consistent with the striped pair-density wave. When further doping the gapless spin liquid phase or doping the dimer order phase, another phase takes over, which has similar CDW correlations but all other correlations decay exponentially.

Strongly Correlated Quantum Spin Liquids versus Heavy Fermion Metals: A Review

This review considers the topological fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) that explains the complex behavior of strongly correlated Fermi systems, such as frustrated insulators with quantum spin liquid and heavy fermion metals. The review contrasts theoretical consideration with recent experimental data collected on both heavy fermion metals (HF) and frustrated insulators. Such a method allows to understand experimental data. We also consider experimental data collected on quantum spin liquid in Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14 and quasi-one dimensional (1D) quantum spin liquid in both YbAlO 3 and Cu(C 4 H 4 N 2 )(NO 3 ) 2 with the aim to establish a sound theoretical explanation for the observed scaling laws, Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior exhibited by these frustrated insulators. The recent experimental data on the heavy-fermion metal α-YbAl 1-x Fe x B 4 , with x=0.014, and on its sister compounds β-YbAlB 4 and YbCo 2 Ge 4 , carried out under the application of magnetic field as a control parameter are analyzed. We show that the thermodynamic and transport properties as well as the empirical scaling laws follow from the fermion condensation theory. We explain how both the similarity and the difference in the thermodynamic and transport properties of α-YbAl 1-x Fe x B 4 and in its sister compounds β-YbAlB 4 and YbCo 2 Ge 4 emerge, as well as establish connection of these (HF) metals with insulators Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14 , Cu(C 4 H 4 N 2 )(NO 3 ) 2 and YbAlO 3 . We demonstrate that the universal LFL and NFL behavior emerge because the HF compounds and the frustrated insulators are located near the topological FCQPT or are driven by the application of magnetic fields.

Network construction of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2) _k k anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2) _k k WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2) _2 2 model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our results shed new light on the stability of non-Abelian topological phases in artificial quantum materials.

High-energy spin excitations in the quantum spin liquid candidate Zn-substituted barlowite probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

A quantum spin liquid is a novel ground state that can support long-range entanglement between magnetic moments, resulting in exotic spin excitations involving fractionalized $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ spinons. Here, we measure the excitations in single crystals of the spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. By analyzing the incident polarization and temperature dependences, we deduce a clear magnetic scattering contribution forming a broad continuum that surprisingly extends up to ~ $200$ meV (~14$J$, where $J$ is the magnetic exchange). In conclusion, the excitation spectrum reveals that significant contributions arise from multiple pairs of spinons and/or antispinons at high energies.

Proposal to detect emergent gauge field and its Meissner effect in spin liquids using NV centers

Here, we show that nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers could provide distinct signatures of emergent gauge fields in certain phase transitions in spin liquids. We consider the relaxation rate 1/ T 1 of a diamond NV center placed a distance z 0 above a crystal consisting of two-dimensional layers which hosts a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. We show that, during a spinon pairing transition from a U(1) to a Z2 spin liquid, the relaxation rate exhibits a rapid fall just below the pairing transition. The drop is much faster than what can be accounted for by the opening of the energy gap. Instead, the rapid fall with a unique z 0 dependence of its height and width is the signature of the Meissner effect of the gauge field. We identify the organic ET compound which has a phase transition at 6 K as a candidate for the experimental observation of this phenomenon.

Temperature evolution of the phonon dynamics in the Kitaev spin liquid

In this work, we present a study of the phonon dynamics in the honeycomb Kitaev spin model at finite temperatures. We show that the fractionalized spin excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid, the itinerant Majorana fermions, and static Z 2 fluxes have distinct effects on the phonon dynamics, which makes the phonon dynamics a promising tool for exploring the Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials. In particular, we focus on the signature of the fractionalized excitations in the thermodynamic behavior of the sound attenuation and the phonon Hall viscosity: the former describes the phonon decay into the fractionalized excitations, and the latter is the leading order time-reversal symmetry breaking effect on the acoustic phonon. We find that the angular dependence of the attenuation coefficient and its magnitude is modified by the thermal excitation of the Z 2 fluxes. The strength of this effect strongly depends on the relative magnitude of the sound velocity and the Fermi velocity characterizing the low-energy Majorana fermions. We also show that the Hall viscosity is strongly suppressed by the increase of the density of the Z 2 fluxes at finite temperatures. All these observations reflect the effects of the emergent disorder on the Majorana fermions introduced by the Z 2 fluxes. Our analysis is based on the complementary analytical calculations in the low-temperature zero-flux sector, and numerical calculations in the inhomogeneous flux sectors at intermediate and high temperatures with stratified Monte Carlo (strMC) method.

Pyrochlore NaYbO2: A Potential Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

The search for quantum spin liquids (QSL) and chemical doping in such materials to explore superconductivity have continuously attracted intense interest. Here, we report the discovery of a potential QSL candidate, pyrochlore-lattice β-NaYbO2. Colorless and transparent NaYbO2 single crystals, layered α-NaYbO2 (∼250 μm on edge) and octahedral β-NaYbO2 (∼50 μm on edge), were grown for the first time. Synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffraction unambiguously determined that the newfound β-NaYbO2 belongs to the three-dimensional pyrochlore structure characterized by the R3̅m space group, corroborated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and pair distribution function. Magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic order or spin glass behavior down to 0.4 K with a low boundary spin frustration factor of 17.5, suggesting a potential QSL ground state. Under high magnetic fields, the potential QSL state was broken and spins order. Our findings reveal that NaYbO2 is a fertile playground for studying novel quantum states.
