Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .

Superconducting Fourfold Fe(Te,Se) Film on Sixfold Magnetic MnTe via Hybrid Symmetry Epitaxy

Epitaxial Fe(Te,Se) thin films have been grown on various substrates but never been grown on magnetic layers. In this work, we report the epitaxial growth of fourfold Fe(Te,Se) film on a sixfold antiferromagnetic insulator, MnTe. The Fe(Te,Se)/MnTe heterostructure shows a clear superconducting transition at around 11 K, and the critical magnetic field measurement suggests the origin of the superconductivity to be bulk-like. Structural characterizations suggest that the uniaxial lattice match between Fe(Te,Se) and MnTe allows a hybrid symmetry epitaxy mode, which was recently discovered between Fe(Te,Se) and Bi 2 Te 3 . Furthermore, the Te/Fe flux ratio during deposition of the Fe(Te,Se) layer is found to be critical for its superconductivity. Now that superconducting Fe(Te,Se) can be grown on two related hexagonal platforms, Bi 2 Te 3 and MnTe, this result opens a new possibility of combining topological superconductivity of Fe(Te,Se) with the rich physics in the intrinsic magnetic topological materials (MnTe) n (Bi 2 Te 3 ) m family.

Negative linear compressibility in Se at ultra-high pressure above 120 GPa

A series of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were carried out, combined with first-principles calculations, to study structural phase transitions of selenium at high pressures and room temperature. Several phase transitions were observed, among which an isostructural phase transition was found at around 120 GPa for the first time. Evolved from the rhombohedral (space group R$\bar{3}$m) structure (Se-V), the new phase (Se-V') exhibited an interesting increase of lattice parameter a at pressures from 120 to 148 GPa, known as negative linear compressibility (NLC). The discovery of NLC behavior observed in this work is mainly attributed to the accuracy and fine steps controlled by the membrane system for in situ XRD data collected with an exposure time of 0.5 s. After 140 GPa, a body-centered cubic (b.c.c.) structure Se-VI (space group Im$\bar{3}$m) was formed, which remains stable up to 210 GPa, the highest pressure achieved in this study. The bulk moduli of phases Se-V, Se-V' and Se-VI were estimated to be 83 ± 2, 321 ± 2 and 266 ± 7 GPa, respectively, according to the P–V curve fit by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. The Se-V' phase shows a bulk modulus almost 4 times larger than that of the Se-V phase, which is mainly due to the effect of its NLC. NLC in a higher pressure range is always more significant in terms of fundamental mechanism and new materials discovery, yet it has barely been reported at pressures above 100 GPa. This will hopefully inspire future studies on potential NLC behaviors in other materials at ultra-high pressure.

Anisotropic Properties of Quasi‐1D In 4 Se 3 : Mechanical Exfoliation, Electronic Transport, and Polarization‐Dependent Photoresponse

Abstract Theoretical and experimental investigations of various exfoliated samples taken from layered In 4 Se 3 crystals are performed. In spite of the ionic character of interlayer interactions in In 4 Se 3 and hence much higher calculated cleavage energies compared to graphite, it is possible to produce few‐nanometer‐thick flakes of In 4 Se 3 by mechanical exfoliation of its bulk crystals. The In 4 Se 3 flakes exfoliated on Si/SiO 2 have anisotropic electronic properties and exhibit field‐effect electron mobilities of about 50 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at room temperature, which are comparable with other popular transition metal chalcogenide (TMC) electronic materials, such as MoS 2 and TiS 3 . In 4 Se 3 devices exhibit a visible range photoresponse on a timescale of less than 30 ms. The photoresponse depends on the polarization of the excitation light consistent with symmetry‐dependent band structure calculations for the most expected ac cleavage plane. These results demonstrate that mechanical exfoliation of layered ionic In 4 Se 3 crystals is possible, while the fast anisotropic photoresponse makes In 4 Se 3 a competitive electronic material, in the TMC family, for emerging optoelectronic device applications.

Monolayer Superconductivity and Tunable Topological Electronic Structure at the Fe(Te,Se)/Bi 2 Te 3 Interface

The interface between 2D topological Dirac states and an s-wave superconductor is expected to support Majorana-bound states (MBS) that can be used for quantum computing applications. Realizing these novel states of matter and their applications requires control over superconductivity and spin-orbit coupling to achieve spin-momentum-locked topological interface states (TIS) which are simultaneously superconducting. While signatures of MBS have been observed in the magnetic vortex cores of bulk FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 , inhomogeneity and disorder from doping make these signatures unclear and inconsistent between vortices. In this work, superconductivity is reported in monolayer (ML) FeTe 1–y Se y (Fe(Te,Se)) grown on Bi 2 Te 3 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) directly resolve the interfacial spin and electronic structure of Fe(Te,Se)/Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructures. For y = 0.25, the Fe(Te,Se) electronic structure is found to overlap with the Bi 2 Te 3 TIS and the desired spin-momentum locking is not observed. In contrast, for y = 0.1, reduced inhomogeneity measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and a smaller Fe(Te,Se) Fermi surface with clear spin-momentum locking in the topological states are found. Hence, it is demonstrated that the Fe(Te,Se)/Bi 2 Te 3 system is a highly tunable platform for realizing MBS where reduced doping can improve characteristics important for Majorana interrogation and potential applications.

Angle-Resolved Polarized Raman Study of Layered Cr 2 Se 3

The polarization-resolved Raman spectra of two-dimensional Cr 2 Se 3 synthesized via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and chemical vapor transport (CVT) techniques were investigated in detail. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A distinct polarization dependence was observed in the Raman intensity of all the Cr-Cr, Cr-Se, and Se-Se modes in both samples. The observed angle-dependent Raman intensities of each peak could be related to the crystal structure-specific Raman tensor. XRD results of the bulk Cr 2 Se 3 sample synthesized via CVT confirm its trigonal crystal structure, and the Raman peaks can be fitted using the Raman tensors for the A g and E g modes for both the parallel and crossed polarizations. However, for the Cr 2 Se 3 samples directly grown on Si/SiO 2 substrates by CVD, it was necessary to assume the triclinic crystal structure in order to explain the polarized Raman dependence of all the peaks in both parallel and crossed polarization directions. Furthermore, this is the first experimental result suggesting the existence of triclinic Cr 2 Se 3 crystal structure, which has been theoretically predicted in the Materials Project database.

Charge Transfer Properties of Heterostructures Formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Atomically thin bismuth oxyselenide (Bi 2 O 2 Se) exhibits attractive properties for electronic and optoelectronic applications, such as high charge-carrier mobility and good air stability. Recently, the development of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have attracted enormous interests with promising prospects for diverse device applications. Although the electrical properties of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have been widely studied, the interlayer charge transfer in these heterostructures remains elusive, despite its importance in harnessing their emergent functionalities. Here, a comprehensive experimental investigation on the interlayer charge transfer properties of two heterostructures formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and representative transition metal dichalcogenides (namely, WS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se and MoS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se) is reported. In this work, Kelvin probe force microscopy is used to measure the work functions of the samples, which are further employed to establish type-II band alignment of both heterostructures. Photoluminescence quenching is observed in each heterostructure, suggesting high charge transfer efficiency. Time-resolved and layer-selective pump–probe measurements further prove the ultrafast interlayer charge transfer processes and formation of long-lived interlayer excitons. These results establish the feasibility of integrating 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se with other 2D semiconductors to fabricate heterostructures with novel charge transfer properties and provide insight for understanding the performance of optoelectronic devices based on such 2D heterostructures.

Magnetic properties of ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6

The physical properties of Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 have been investigated using single crystals grown by iodine-assisted vapor transport. Additionally, the material possesses a ferrimagnetic ground state and the properties are similar to those in the isostructural compound Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 . Furthermore, in these trigonal materials, the dominant magnetic exchanges are antiferromagnetic and intrinsically frustrated, leading to a variety of competing ground states. In Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 , the Curie temperature is TC = 67(1)K, which is slightly lower than that of Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 where TC = 78K. The anisotropy field is also smaller in the selenide relative to the telluride. In both materials, short-range correlations likely exist well-above TC. Neutron single crystal diffraction data on Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 suggest a collinear ferrimagnetic structure with the moments tilting out of the ab-plane in zero-field. Finally, the magnetization of vapor grown Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 is shown for comparison; these vapor grown crystals do not show a sharp onset of magnetic anisotropy above 300K as was previously observed for melt grown Mn 3 Si 2 Se 6 crystals.

Structural Characterization and Ligand-Induced Conformational Changes of SenB, a Se-Glycosyltransferase Involved in Selenoneine Biosynthesis

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient that is found naturally in proteins, nucleic acids, and natural products. Unlike selenoproteins and selenonucleic acids, little is known about the structures of biosynthetic enzymes that incorporate Se into small molecules. Here, we report the X-ray crystal structure of SenB, the first known Se-glycosyltransferase that was recently found to be involved in the biosynthesis of the Se-containing metabolite selenoneine. SenB catalyzes C–Se bond formation using selenophosphate and an activated uridine diphosphate sugar as a Se and glycosyl donor, respectively, making it the first known selenosugar synthase and one of only four bona fide C–Se bond-forming enzymes discovered to date. Our crystal structure, determined to 2.25 Å resolution, reveals that SenB is a type B glycosyltransferase, displaying the prototypical fold with two globular Rossmann-like domains and a catalytic interdomain cleft. By employing complementary structural biology techniques, we find that SenB undergoes both local and global substrate-induced conformational changes, demonstrating a significant increase in α-helicity and a transition to a more compact conformation. Our results provide the first structure of SenB and set the stage for further biochemical characterization in the future.

Synthesis and Electrical Properties of a New Compound (BiSe) 0.97 (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1.26 (BiSe) 0.97 (MoSe 2 ) Containing Metallic 1T-MoSe 2

The synthesis and electrical properties of a new misfit compound containing BiSe, Bi 2 Se 3 , and MoSe 2 constituent layers are reported. The reaction pathway involves competition between the formation of (BiSe) 1+x (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1+y (BiSe) 1+x (MoSe 2 ) and [(Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1+y ] 2 (MoSe 2 ). Excess Bi and Se are required in the precursor to synthesize (BiSe) 1+x (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1+y (BiSe) 1+x (MoSe 2 ). High-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirm the stacking sequence of the heterostructure. Small grains of both 2H- and 1T-MoSe 2 are observed in the MoSe 2 layers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that there is a significantly higher percentage of 1T-MoSe 2 in (BiSe) 1+x (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1+y (BiSe) 1+x (MoSe 2 ) than in (BiSe) 0.97 (MoSe 2 ), suggesting that more charge transfer to MoSe 2 occurs due to the additional BiSe layer. The additional charge transfer results in (BiSe) 1+x (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 1+y (BiSe) 1+x (MoSe 2 ) having a low resistivity (14–19 μΩ m) with metallic temperature dependence. Furthermore, the heterogeneous mix of MoSe 2 polytypes observed in the XPS complicates the interpretation of the Hall data as two bands contribute to the electrical continuity.

Increased Defect Resistance and Ordering in MnBi 2 (Se 1– x Te x ) 4 via Accurate Diffusion Monte Carlo

Stabilizing materials and controlling defect formation remain key challenges in materials science, particularly for theory, where small energy differences must be resolved for accurate predictions. Here, we applied state-of-the-art theoretical methods to topological materials, focusing on MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT), which is a promising intrinsic magnetic topological insulator. Antisite defects in MBT alter its electronic structure and magnetism, degrading topological properties and causing experimental inconsistencies. Using diffusion Monte Carlo and density functional theory, we investigated the thermodynamic stability and defect formation in MBT, MnBi 2 Se 4 (MBS), and MnBi 2 (Se 1–x Te x ) 4 . We found that MnBi 2 Se 2 Te 2 can be stable at finite temperatures, with higher defect formation energies due to stronger Mn–Se bonding and reduced internal strain. Se preferentially substitutes Te near Mn instead of Te in the outer layer, encouraging long-range ordering when incorporated. For MnBi 2 (Se 1–x Te x ) 4 , cluster expansion phase diagrams revealed solid solution behavior when x <0.5 and phase separation for larger x. MBT and MBS are topological insulators; therefore, the MnBi 2 (Se 1–x Te x ) 4 family could offer tunable topological behavior and improved stability.

Nanoscale Engineering of Polymorphism in Cu 2 Se-Based Composites

Crystal polymorphism selection during synthesis is extremely challenging. However, promoting the formation of a specific metastable polymorph enables modulation of the functional properties of phase-change materials through alteration of the relative abundance of various polymorphs. Here, we demonstrate the stabilization of the superionic β-Cu 2 Se phase under ambient conditions and the direct control over the relative ratio between the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se polymorphs in (x)CuGaSe 2 /(1-x)Cu 2 Se composites using CuGaSe 2 nanoseeds. Here, we found that the small lattice mismatch between β-Cu 2 Se (cubic) and the ab plane of tetragonal CuGaSe 2 nanoseeds promotes the formation of low-energy coherent CuGaSe 2 /β-Cu 2 Se interfaces leading to preferential stabilization of β-Cu 2 Se. Astonishingly, the hierarchical microstructure of the resulting composites enables a remarkable decoupling of charge and heat transport, which is manifested by a breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law

Evidence for In-Plane Electrical Polarization in 3R-β’-In 2 Se 3 Thin Films Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

β-In 2 Se 3 has been identified as a potential ferroelectric. This work describes the growth of β-In 2 Se 3 via molecular beam epitaxy along with a description of its properties, including the search for switchable polarization in 3R-β’-In2Se3. The thin-film morphology, crystal structure, and phase maps of β-In 2 Se 3 on Si(111) and Al 2 O 3 (0001) were evaluated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy as a function of the atomic Se/In flux ratio and growth temperature. Smooth β-In 2 Se 3 thin films were successfully realized on Si(111) at a substrate temperature of 150 °C using a Se/In flux ratio of 5.7, as well as on Al 2 O 3 (0001) at 450 °C using a Se/In flux ratio of 5.5. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) confirms the 3R polytype of β-In 2 Se 3 in films on both substrates, with a minor disorder associated with the 2H polytype at the interface. Indications of in-plane Se atom displacements characteristic of the 3R-β’-In 2 Se 3 polytype were found by STEM and second harmonic generation analysis in films on Al 2 O 3 (0001), but not in films on Si(111). Furthermore, attempts at electrical polarization switching did not produce compelling evidence for ferroelectricity. Instead, electrical transport measurements demonstrated locally varying anisotropic responses with the applied electric fields along different in-plane directions, with some hysteresis associated with the trapping of charges.

Assessment of deep levels with selenium concentration in Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y room temperature detector materials

Incorporation of Se into Cd 1–x Zn x Te (CZT) to form the quaternary compound semiconductor Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y (CZTS) has proven to be an effective solution for compensating the major flaws associated with CZT, including poor homogeneity and high concentrations of electronically active deep levels that limit the performance of CZT detectors. In order to investigate how deep levels are affected by the Se concentration in CZTS, we performed photoinduced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) measurements on CZTS crystals grown by the traveling heater method (THM) with 10% atomic Zn and varying atomic percentage of Se from 1.5% to 7.0%. The PICTS scans for up to 4% Se showed an exponential reduction in the capture cross section of deep levels associated with Te secondary phases in conjunction with an increase in a deep level positioned near the mid-gap, which initially increases the electron trapping time before degrading again at higher Se concentrations. The PICTS peaks present in 7% Se were anomalous relative to the other crystals and are expected to originate from transition metal impurities found in the lower-purity CdSe precursor material.

Mg x Zn 1−x O contact to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices

Abstract CuGa 3 Se 5 is a promising candidate material with wide band gap for top cells in tandem photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, traditional CdS contact layers used with other chalcopyrite absorbers are not suitable for CuGa 3 Se 5 due to the higher position of its conduction band (CB) minimum. Mg x Zn 1− x O (MZO) is a transparent oxide with adjustable band gap and CB position as a function of magnesium composition, but its direct application is hindered by CuGa 3 Se 5 surface oxidation. Here, MZO is investigated as a contact (n-type ‘buffer’ or ‘window’) material to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorbers pretreated in Cd 2+ solution, and an onset potential close to 1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride electrolyte is demonstrated. The Cd 2+ surface treatment changes the chemical composition and electronic structure of the CuGa 3 Se 5 surface, as demonstrated by photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The performance of CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber with Cd 2+ treated surface in the solid-state test structure depends on the Zn/Mg ratio in the MZO layer. The measured open circuit voltage of 925 mV is promising for tandem PEC water splitting with CuGa 3 Se 5 /MZO top cells.

X-Ray and Electron Spectroscopy of the CdS/(Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se 2 Interface With RbF Treatment

The chemical and electronic structure of the CdS/(Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se 2 (CdS/ACIGSe) interface for thin-film solar cells, involving an absorber with a bulk [Ag]/([Ag]+[Cu]) (AAC) ratio of 0.06, a state-of-the-art RbF post-deposition treatment (PDT), and a chemical-bath deposited CdS buffer layer, is studied. To gain a detailed and depth-resolved picture of the CdS/ACIGSe interface, synchrotron- and laboratory-based hard X-ray, soft X-ray, and UV photoelectron spectroscopy, inverse photoemission spectroscopy, and X-ray emission spectroscopy are combined. Compared to the bulk of the absorber, a Cu- and Ga-poor ACIGSe surface is found, with a slightly increased AAC ratio. Strong evidence of a Rb–In–Se species (possibly with some Ag) at the absorber surface is compiled, with a corresponding band gap of 2.79 ± 0.12 eV. This finding is in clear contrast to comparable Ag-free Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 absorbers with RbF-PDT. The Rb–In–Se surface species is not removed by the (wet-chemical) CdS deposition process, while some Se diffuses into the CdS layer and segregates at its surface. The CdS buffer layer shows a band gap of 2.48 ± 0.12 eV, and a cliff (≈ -0.4 eV) is determined in the conduction band alignment at the interface between the Rb–In–Se species and the CdS buffer.
