Sandia Optical Fringe Analysis Slope Tool (SOFAST) Improvement Effort (Final Report)

The Sandia Optical Fringe Analysis Slope Tool (SOFAST) is a tool that has been developed at Sandia to measure the surface slope of concentrating solar power optics. This tool has largely remained of research quality over the past few years. Since SOFAST is important to ongoing tests happening at Sandia as well as an interest to others outside Sandia, there is a desire to bring SOFAST up to professional software standards. The goal of this effort was to make progress in several broad areas including: code quality, sample data collection, and validation and testing. During the course of this effort, much progress was made in these areas. SOFAST is now a much more professional grade tool. There are, however, some areas of improvement that could not be addressed in the timeframe of this work and will be addressed in the continuation of this effort.

Sandia Image Labeling Tool (SILT)

SAND2025-01840O Sandia Image Labeling Tool (SILT) is a Python tool that labels images for machine learning and other applications. SILT uploads JSON files to create a template for labeling an image. SILT can then upload images, including images that are tens of GB large and dynamically loads them in a manner that a user, with a very modest spec laptop, can handle. It then saves the label as a JSON using the template. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Experiments at Sandia to Measure the Effect of Temperature on Critical Systems

Estimation of the uncertainty in a critical experiment attributable to uncertainties in the measured experiment temperature is done by calculating the variation of the eigenvalue of a benchmark configuration as a function of temperature. In the low-enriched water-moderated critical experiments performed at Sandia, this is done by 1) estimating the effects of changing the water temperature while holding the UO 2 fuel temperature constant, 2) estimating the effects of changing the UO 2 temperature while holding the water temperature constant, and 3) combining the two results. This assumes that the two effects are separable. The results of such an analysis are nonintuitive and need experimental verification. Critical experiments are being planned at Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) to measure the effect of temperature on critical systems and will serve to test the methods used in estimating the temperature effects in critical experiments.

Sandia's Integrated Methodology for Energy and Infrastructure Resilience Analysis

Sandia National Laboratories' (Sandia) Resilient Energy Systems (RES) Strategic Initiative is establishing a strategic vision for U.S. energy systems' resilience through threat-informed research and development, enabling energy and interdependent infrastructure systems to successfully adapt in an environment of accelerating change. A key challenge in promoting energy systems resilience lies in developing rigorous resilience analysis methodologies to quantify system performance. Resilience analysis methodologies should enable evaluation of the consequences of various disruptions and the relative effectiveness of potential mitigations. To address this challenge, RES synthesized the common components of Sandia's resilience frameworks into an integrated methodology for energy and infrastructure resilience analysis. This report documents, demonstrates, and extends this methodology.

Sandia Electromagnetic Environment Simulator Facilities

Sandia National Laboratories’ (Sandia’s) Electrical Sciences Group (1350) provides a spectrum of solutions for electromagnetic (EM) environment effects on electrical systems to advance physical understanding including experiments, analytical and numerical model development leveraging first-principles physics, and high-performance computational modeling and simulation (M&S). The six departments in the Electrical Sciences Group provide analysis, design guidance, and experiments in support of nuclear weapons qualification in normal, abnormal, and hostile environments, as well as research and development for advanced electrical systems that can operate through these environments. This document is intended to provide a quick summary of Sandia’s EM experimental facilities, most of which provide unique national capabilities.

COVID-19, An Exercise in Data Governance at Sandia National Laboratories

In April of 2020, Sandia National Laboratories had an urgent need to identify and manage the data that could be used to create mobile applications, models, reports, and visualizations to assist management in safely bringing the workforce onsite during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple divisions volunteered to design and build software solutions; meanwhile, requests for new data sources, including duplicate requests, were inundating Information Technology (IT) and data owners. The Enterprise Data Governance Team was assigned to resolve obtaining and accessing new sources of data in an accelerated timeframe. Through successful collaboration with multiple stakeholders and domain owners across Sandia, the Enterprise Data Governance Team rapidly developed a centralized data strategy and solution for use in safeguarding the Sandia workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic. This foundation enabled teams to successfully develop solutions, including reports for executives and management as well as the data for modeling and scientific analysis.

Electric Field Measurements at the Surface of a Piezoelectric Transformer for Plasma Jet Formation using the Plasma Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratory (Final Report)

The overall goal of this research is to understand how low-temperature non-equilibrium plasmas form directly off the surface of piezoelectric crystals. Specifically, this project aims to temporally and spatially resolve how the electric field evolves on and near the surface of a piezoelectric transformer (PT) at conditions that produce an atmospheric-pressure air plasma jet emanating from the corner of the PT. In this work, we used the Plasma Research Facility (PRF) at Sandia National Laboratory to conduct temporally- and spatially-resolved electric field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) measurements of the electric field at and near the surface of a piezoelectric transformer, providing a fundamental understanding of how piezoelectric crystals can be used for plasma generation. We carried out two Objectives: Objective 1 – The first objective was to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of the electric field along the surfaces approaching the corner of a rectangular PT just below conditions that lead to plasma jet formation. Such a measurement can be used to explain when and where the electric field peaks, leading to plasma formation; Objective 2 – The second objective was to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of the electric field along the surfaces approaching the corner of a rectangular PT just at conditions of plasma jet formation. This, in principle, gives a more accurate determination of how the electric field leads to plasma formation but is more difficult due to the relatively stochastic plasma jet behavior of a PT. This work was complemented by an award from the Sandia PRF, and we worked with Dr. Edward Barnat at the Sandia PRF to carry out these objectives.

Sandia Mechanics Challenge 2023 Information Packet: Structure with a Threaded Fastener Joint

The Sandia Mechanics Challenge (SMC) provides the solid-mechanics community a forum for assessing its ability to predict mechanical behavior in structures and materials through a blind, round-robin format. Computationalists are asked to predict the behavior of an unfamiliar geometry given experimental calibration data, their predictions are compared to experimental measurements of the SMC scenario, and then the participants assess and compare their approaches, documenting their findings. The SMC broadens the scope of Sandia-hosted benchmarking problems that previously focused on ductile failure through the Sandia Fracture Challenges, enabling an enduring, community-wide self-assessment of predictive capabilities for a variety of mechanics topics. The SMC is part of the Structural Reliability Partnership, which offers other benchmarking challenges hosted by several participating institutions.
