Sandia Image Labeling Tool (SILT)

SAND2025-01840O Sandia Image Labeling Tool (SILT) is a Python tool that labels images for machine learning and other applications. SILT uploads JSON files to create a template for labeling an image. SILT can then upload images, including images that are tens of GB large and dynamically loads them in a manner that a user, with a very modest spec laptop, can handle. It then saves the label as a JSON using the template. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Electric Field Measurements at the Surface of a Piezoelectric Transformer for Plasma Jet Formation using the Plasma Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratory (Final Report)

The overall goal of this research is to understand how low-temperature non-equilibrium plasmas form directly off the surface of piezoelectric crystals. Specifically, this project aims to temporally and spatially resolve how the electric field evolves on and near the surface of a piezoelectric transformer (PT) at conditions that produce an atmospheric-pressure air plasma jet emanating from the corner of the PT. In this work, we used the Plasma Research Facility (PRF) at Sandia National Laboratory to conduct temporally- and spatially-resolved electric field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) measurements of the electric field at and near the surface of a piezoelectric transformer, providing a fundamental understanding of how piezoelectric crystals can be used for plasma generation. We carried out two Objectives: Objective 1 – The first objective was to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of the electric field along the surfaces approaching the corner of a rectangular PT just below conditions that lead to plasma jet formation. Such a measurement can be used to explain when and where the electric field peaks, leading to plasma formation; Objective 2 – The second objective was to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of the electric field along the surfaces approaching the corner of a rectangular PT just at conditions of plasma jet formation. This, in principle, gives a more accurate determination of how the electric field leads to plasma formation but is more difficult due to the relatively stochastic plasma jet behavior of a PT. This work was complemented by an award from the Sandia PRF, and we worked with Dr. Edward Barnat at the Sandia PRF to carry out these objectives.

Sandia Mechanics Challenge 2023 Information Packet: Structure with a Threaded Fastener Joint

The Sandia Mechanics Challenge (SMC) provides the solid-mechanics community a forum for assessing its ability to predict mechanical behavior in structures and materials through a blind, round-robin format. Computationalists are asked to predict the behavior of an unfamiliar geometry given experimental calibration data, their predictions are compared to experimental measurements of the SMC scenario, and then the participants assess and compare their approaches, documenting their findings. The SMC broadens the scope of Sandia-hosted benchmarking problems that previously focused on ductile failure through the Sandia Fracture Challenges, enabling an enduring, community-wide self-assessment of predictive capabilities for a variety of mechanics topics. The SMC is part of the Structural Reliability Partnership, which offers other benchmarking challenges hosted by several participating institutions.

Neutron production and dosimetry with D(D,n) 3 He, 12 C(D,n) 13 N and 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be reactions at the Sandia Ion Beam Laboratory

Neutrons are produced at the Sandia Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL) using a beam of 280 keV D 2 + ions onto an erbium deuteride target. At test locations in the forward direction these neutrons have energies of about 2.9 MeV and a maximum flux on the flange of the test chamber of about 10 10 n/cm 2 /hour. Dosimetry is done by counting associated charged particles and by nickel foil activation dosimetry. Neutrons with higher energies, up to 6 MeV are produced using higher energy deuterium, up to 3 MeV, from the Pelletron ion accelerator at the IBL on a deuteride target. This report provides detailed information on the methods used for the production and dosimetry of neutrons by the D(D,n) 3 He nuclear reaction at the IBL. Neutron production by the 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be reaction with a proton beam from the Pelletron on a lithium target, such as LiF is also discussed. This produces neutrons with lower energy, in the range from about 0.1 to 1.3 MeV. Neutron production by the 12 C(D,n) 13 N reaction is also discussed. The purpose of this report is to provide information needed to test the effects of neutron irradiation on semiconductor materials and devices at the Sandia IBL.

Evaluation of Sandia NCS Benchmark Suite Updates

The Sandia Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) program’s benchmark suite was recently updated. This suite is used to ensure that NCS calculations using computer-based neutron transportation codes have an established baseline comparison of calculated versus known experimental results. The Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) version used for the MCNP models in the suite was changed from ENDF/B-VII.1 to ENDF/B-VIII.0. Additionally, relevant thermal scattering law data libraries (TSLs) were updated. The sensitivity of the calculational bias of each benchmark model to these changes is discussed. Implementation of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library and updated TSLs results in improvements to bias distribution in the intermediate enriched uranium, plutonium, and mixed uranium–plutonium (IEU, PU, and MIX) fissionable material benchmark categories, but a small bias increase in low- and high-enriched uranium categories (LEU and HEU, respectively). The results also highlight the sensitivity of the benchmarks, with average lethargy of neutrons causing fission energies (EALF) in the intermediate energy range to ENDF/B library changes. The most numerous bias changes were observed in the thermal energy region when transitioning from ENDF/B-VII.1 to ENDF/B-VIII.0. In conclusion, most of the unique bias changes observed in MCNP 6.3.0 between the two nuclear data libraries were in the LEU-COMP-THERM evaluation subset.

Novel deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron activation diagnostics for increased neutron yield operations at Sandia’s Z-facility (invited)

As inertial confinement fusion experiments at Sandia National Laboratories’ Z-facility begin using deuterium–tritium (DT) fuels, the expected DT-neutron yields are expected to increase many orders of magnitude. This brings about the need for diagnostics that have a significantly higher dynamic range of operation and ability to obtain yields where there will be significant radiation holds. Using the current activation diagnostic infrastructure at the Z-facility, a pair of activation diagnostics are being developed. Here, the first is fluorine activation, which will be used in a similar manner to current copper activation diagnostics that are fielded in a rabbit for quick removal from the experiments without opening the vacuum experiment containment. The second is a prompt DT-neutron detector that exploits the activation of oxygen with similar operation characteristics as the current Be-probes fielded at Z. We will discuss the design of this pair of instruments, along with calibration work performed at Sandia’s Ion Beam Laboratory in support of the development and anticipated instrument performance.
